Message from Sir Ben Ainslie and his wife Georgie

Sir Ben CO95 and Georgie Ainslie kindly sent a message of encouragement and inspiration to the students and staff at Truro School, which was perfectly timed during children’s mental health week.

Sir Ben Ainslie CO95 - Takes on the Challenge of a Lifetime in the PRADA Cup and the winner will challenge the Defender, Emirates Team New Zealand, in the America’s Cup Match.

Old Truronian, Sir Ben Ainslie, is the most successful sailor in Olympic history, winning medals at five consecutive Olympics from 1996 onwards, including Gold at the four Games held between 2000 and 2012.

Sir Ben is the Team Principal and Skipper of INEOS TEAM UK, the British Challenger for the 36th America’s Cup. Recently the fantastic news that the INEOS TEAM UK had won the semi-finals of the PRADA Cup reached the School and we sent messages of congratulations to Sir Ben. In return he and wife Georgie sent the wonderfully inspiring personal message to students and staff (see link on page 1).

The first stage of the PRADA Cup consisted of four ‘round robins’ of three races each. The Challenger with the highest score at the end of the ‘round robins’ automatically goes through to the PRADA Cup Final; INEOS TEAM UK were successful and won this round.

The remaining two teams had to race again in a seven-race semi-final.

Speaking immediately after the win from onboard BRITANNIA Sir Ben said:

“That was a great moment for the team because we’ve had a tough build up to this competition. I’m incredibly proud of everybody. That said, we know we have a long way to go. Whilst we’ve got ourselves into the PRADA Cup Final it’s just one step on the road. We now have to focus on continuously improving our performance, winning the PRADA Cup and then eventually the America’s Cup itself. One step at a time but the team have done a fantastic job.”

The PRADA Cup Final starts on 13th February and INEOS TEAM UK will face Luna Rossa Prada Pirelli.

View from the Chamber I find it difficult to comprehend that this time last year I was shaking hands with business people at Chamber networking events, rooms filled with hundreds of people.

The way we do business has changed dramatically – but we’re still doing it, and that’s the important thing. We’ve found new ways to adapt and the future is - in my opinion- bright for Cornwall as a result of these changes.

A bleak January day in Lockdown was cheered by the news that The Duchy will be hosting the G7 Summit in June.

In my opinion, this is a pivotal moment for Cornwall and the summit will be an important catalyst for positive change here.

Wednesday Afternoon Activites

By Zoe Jobling During lockdown co-curriculum activities have evolved as staff and students alike adapt to participating in activities remotely.

I am constantly amazed by the dedication from both our pupils and our staff towards Co-curricular at Truro School. Even during lockdown, the remote co-curricular offering is thriving.

We have 30 Wednesday Afternoon Activities run by dedicated teachers who are enthusing their groups, albeit in a slightly different way. Whether it be Macbeth, photography, sporting workouts, chemistry experiments or one of the many other activities on offer, our pupils are still able to follow their passion and to learn new skills.

Away from the curriculum timetable, we have close to 40 clubs and activities running for pupils to attend at lunchtimes and after school. We are all aware of the benefits that hobbies and interests can have for our mental health and wellbeing, and we are blessed to have a staff body who really care for their charges.

Ken Holland CO67- A Career Combining Teaching and Photography

Ken Holland attended the school from 1960 to 1967 along with his brother Chris CO70, who now lives in Queensland, Australia and their cousins John Holland CO54, Edwin Bennett CO62, Paul Robinson CO61 and Brian Robinson CO57.

Ken had always wanted to go to Truro School, mainly because it had a swimming pool! He has fond memories of playing sports including swimming, football and cricket (breaking his thumb during a cricket match whilst taking a catch in the slips) and describes himself as “one of the few 10

who enjoyed cross-country runs!”. He also recollects getting caught by Mr Burrell (Headmaster 1959-1986) for bunking off school early one Saturday morning with fellow classmate Roger Taylor CO67 .

“Generally, I enjoyed my years at Truro.

Teenage years can be full of uncertainty and occasional confusion and Truro School helped me through that time. It wasn’t always due to the facts I learned in class, but more about the life skills that are so essential.”

Lockdown Challenge We received so many great responses for our Lockdown Challenge – tell us what lockdown means to you in 20 words or less. Thank you everyone who participated.

Over the next few issues of Keeping Connected we thought we should share some of them. Some may bring a smile, others reflection but mainly we hope to convey the feeling that we are all in this together and others may be feeling many of the same emotions that we all share in these challenging times.

Firstly, we begin with Rob. We realise this entry is ‘a tad more than 20 words’ but we felt it worthy of including:

I woke up this morning.

Early, or not?

Oh yes, I am Teaming I nearly forgot!

Year Five and Year Five one after the other, One hundred- and forty-minutes fly by.

The time has gone and on to another, Now it’s the Year 6 who are on a high!

Quick lunch is eaten, and coffee is drunk, The afternoon off and I collapse with a stare.

I prepare more lessons and biscuits dunk, An evening with red wine, sleeping in the chair.

It’s Year Five, the butterflies and frogs, Lessons prepared, life cycles done, That’s a relief and put out the dogs, Tea’s in the pot and I’m ready for one!

Luke Osborne CO18 - Attention All Surveyors/ Building Industry Workers!

Luke Osborne left Truro School in 2018, having spent every moment outside his lessons in the DT department, doing various woodwork and metalwork projects.

Luke’s passion for woodwork stems from his early days as a 1st year pupil at Truro School. With much appreciated guidance from Tim Tall, Cliff Flowers, Bob Warren and Chris Baker Luke went on to take A level DT alongside his co-curricular DT studies.

John West-Letford, (former DT technician), helped establish his interest in metalworking, showing him the ropes on the engineering lathes, 14

milling machines and other precision equipment. Luke credits him with not only his help on a wide range of projects but equipping him with skills and industry etiquette that he uses now in his day-to-day work.

Straight after finishing A levels, Luke worked on various construction projects at Killiow Estate (Kea, Truro) including the renovation of a 1700s lodge house which required the use of a wide range of construction disciplines including joinery and first and second fix carpentry.

In September 2019 he began

Alongside his parttime degree, Luke works full-time at Falmouth Boat Construction in Flushing as a yard maintenance operative, specialising in building repairs and renovations alongside his general boat caring duties. Before the pandemic, Luke continued to go to the DT afterschool club held by Tim Tall as often as possible and looks forward to it restarting when the situation allows.

Latest News from the Cookery School ‘Shell Out to Help Out’ The cookery school has partnered up with St Ewe Eggs and their inspirational ‘Shell Out to Help Out’ campaign. With most businesses in the hospitality industry closed, large quantities of egg were going to waste, ‘Shell Out to Help Out’ aims to stop this excess egg wastage. The cookery school has been helping out by filming easy, nutritious and thrifty family recipes that use as many eggs as possible.

Truro Cookery School ‘Star Baker’: Tom Reed CO22 The Cookery School was delighted to hear from Old Truronian Tom Reed, who is now studying Animal Management at Duchy College Rosewarne: “During lockdown 3 Truro School Cookery has been uploading tutorials and bakes on their Instagram page, whilst joining with the ‘Shell Out To Help Out’ campaign launched by St Ewe Eggs.

Having links with St Ewe Eggs myself, I felt I must take part! When I saw the Lemon Meringue Pie video, it looked amazing and I couldn’t wait to try it out. I got the ingredients and followed the instructions from the Instagram video and it went well (even though I added the eggs in at the wrong stage first time round – but then we all learn from our mistakes!).

It felt good to be trying new things during lockdown and bakes that improved my confidence and showed me I can do it! I would love to thank Truro School Cookery for uploading these videos and giving us a great source of knowledge.”

Two New Arrivals Welcome Baby Esther On January 8th we bid a temporary farewell to Amanda as she left to take a well-earned rest. And now the Development Team are delighted to announce the safe arrival of Amanda and Adam’s daughter, Esther Lavender on Saturday 23rd January, weighing 7.5lbs. Mum and baby are both doing well.

We send our love and congratulations to Amanda, Adam and Esther.

Welcome Ella!

A warm welcome to our new Development and Alumni Relations Officer Ella, who will be with us for the duration of Amanda’s parental leave.

Ella hails from rural Lincolnshire, where her Dad joined the RAF reserves after a career in the army, and her mother teaches biochemistry. After A levels, Ella moved to Cornwall to study Geography at the University of Exeter’s Penryn campus. While there, she made the most of every opportunity, including third year studies at University College Cork and a summer school in Beijing.

She is a keen baker and skier and so became the Snowsports Social Secretary at Penryn and during the summers when she wasn’t abroad, worked as a baker on Gyllyngvase Beach, Falmouth.

We are delighted to welcome Ella to the Development Team and the Truro School family.

“Hello Old Turonians, I’m Ella, the newest member of the Development team, and I am delighted to be here to hold the fort for Amanda while she is away on parental leave. I grew up in Lincolnshire but fell in love with Cornwall on a university open day. After 4 years studying Geography at the University of Exeter, Penryn Campus, I felt I had only just begun to sample a little of what Cornwall has to offer. So, I chose to look for employment in this beautiful county and get to know it a little better.

Although I am working remotely, like most of the team, I’m looking forward to the end of lockdown so I can make it onto the school campus. In the meantime, over the coming months, I hope to correspond with as many of you as I can.”

Herbert Fleming 17/09/1940 - 17/12/2020 TS 1952-1959 Herbert Fleming died aged 80 on 17th December 2020 after a short illness. Herbert studied French and German at Oxford before he became a translator at English China Clays (now Imerys). He was a regular attendee at the Old Truronian Annual Afternoon Tea and will be greatly missed.

Mike Trevail 14/09/1934 - 24/01/2021 TS 1945-1952 Mike passed away at his family home in Truro at the age of 86. He was a journalist for 62 years working as a reporter for West Briton, Cornish Guardian and Crown Court before he retired. Mike was also a keen golfer, enjoyed his caravanning all over Devon and Cornwall and sailing on his small yacht out on the Fal estuary.

Robert Grose TS 1960-1967 Robert Grose died aged 71. During his career Robert conducted historically important work on HIV/Aids for the World Health Organization (WHO) in Africa, and for polio, HIV and leprosy for the Overseas Development Administration (ODA, later DfID) in India. In retirement he became committed to climate activism.

Henry Heath 24/09/1946 - 2020 TS 1958-1964 Truro School were saddened to hear the news from Australia that Henry Heath (brother of the late John Heath) passed away in late 2020.

Ken Trewhella 14/11/1924 - 05/01/2021 TS 1933-1942 Ken Trewhella passed away on 5th January 2021, aged 96. He worked in the automotive industry for many years and was a keen rugby player, gardener, stamp collector, charity fundraiser and good friend to many.
