Guy Dodd 13 AUGUST 1941 - 8 MAY 2020 TRURO SCHOOL HEADMASTER: 1993 - 2001

Guy Dodd was Headmaster of Truro School from 1993 – 2001. During that time Guy raised funds to establish the Truro School Endowment Fund. In 2015, former Headmaster, Andrew Gordon-Brown, approached Guy asking for his guidance and wisdom to help find a group of passionate individuals who together could form a Board of Trustees and raise funds for transformational bursaries.

From their vision the Truro School Foundation was created and today over 100 children at Truro School receive bursary assistance, supported by the School and Truro School Foundation.

Things you may not know about Guy Dodd: Guy was born in West Kirby in 1941.

At Cheltenham College, he rowed for the 1st VIII and played rugby for the 1st XV rugby team which was unbeaten in 1957.

He read History at Emmanuel College, Cambridge where he rowed for Emmanuel in 1960-63 and was Captain of boats in 1963.

Guy was the first person to climb New Zealand’s two highest mountains – Mount Cook and Mount Tasman on consecutive days.

Whilst teaching history at Cheltenham College, he also coached rugby and rowing and ran the mountaineering club.

In 1982, he was appointed Headmaster of Lord Wandsworth College.

Guy helped to run the Emmott Foundation – a charity funding young people needing support in Sixth Form studies.

Guy was the original Chairman of the Truro School Foundation in 2017.

Guy and Helen sailed around Brittany in Hobo, their well-loved 36’ yacht.

On top of all that - Guy could wiggle his ears! A great trick for any grandfather.

Importance of The Foundation HEAD OF TRURO SCHOOL ANDY JOHNSON

The School’s bursary ambitions are not restricted to those whose families fall on hard times. Of at least equal importance is a commitment to supporting a Truro School education for children who would benefit from it but whose socio-economic circumstances would otherwise make this impossible.

In September I wrote to all Truro School alumni to introduce myself and say how much of an honour it is to become the Head of Truro School. It has been a joy to see the school community reunite with such energy and positivity since then. The school has been busy with so much more than just learning and teaching as we have re-launched almost the whole of our co-curricular programme and wider educational offering, beneath the safety blanket of our robust covid-safe measures.

As a result, I am reminded every day of the dedication of Truro School staff and the privilege of a Truro School education.

Those daily reminders leave me all the more grateful for the assistance given by the Truro School Foundation, and all those of you who support it in whatever ways you can. Our Emergency Bursary Fund kept several pupils in the school through lockdown and into this year whose education would otherwise have been disrupted through no fault of their own.

They have futures at our School that might have been taken from them.

We strive for a bursary system that both puts an arm around those in temporary need, and gives a leg up to those who otherwise could not reach.

I write here to endorse the bursary campaign that the Foundation is launching in celebration, honour, and memory of Guy Dodd, Headmaster of the School from 1993 to 2001. Guy’s generosity of spirit and passion for the school was manifest in all he did and in the love shown to him by all who knew him in his passing. I was not fortunate enough to have met Guy, but he was one of the first to congratulate me when my appointment was made, in a card that I now cherish dearly.

Transforming Lives IMPACT OF YOUR GIVING FOUNDATION AWARD STUDENT – TILLY

Written by Tilly Dear Foundation Donors Thank you for believing in me and enabling me to be a pupil at Truro School. I have had a brilliant first year – even if it wasn’t quite the year we all expected! As a music scholar, I have loved being a member of Junior Wind Band, Wind Band and Flute Choir.

Singing with B Naturals has also been fun. It has been great performing in many concerts throughout the year; I’d never experienced anything like it before starting at Truro School.

I have loved getting to know my new music teachers and I have appreciated all their help and support. It was a shame that I was unable to take my gradings due to COVID-19, but I still feel like I have made some good progress (hopefully my teachers agree).

I knew that I was going to love studying sport at Truro School before I even started. I have

represented the school at swimming, tennis, netball, cricket and badminton. My coaches and teachers have helped me to develop my confidence and skills so much – for that I am grateful. I cannot wait to get back to training regularly and feeling like I am part of a team again.

I have tried my absolute best academically and I have enjoyed studying varied subjects.

English and Religious Studies have been incredibly enjoyable. Maths has been challenging at times, but hopefully it will get easier! Surprisingly, in the past ten months, I have found that I really love Design and Technology, Art, and Photography. I have been working on these skills during lockdown and have so appreciated the encouragement of my teachers (even from afar).

National writing award for Tilly Gold award for Tilly in national poetry writing competition Tilly (who is now in her 2nd year at Truro School) has won a Gold Award in the Anne Frank Poetry Writing Competition. This was a national competition with well over 1000 entries, judged by Booker Prize winner Bernardine Evaristo and Anthony Anaxagorou, and she was one of the top six of her age group, an amazing achievement. Tilly was awarded a number of books, including a personally signed copy of ‘The Promise’ by Eva Schloss.

Furthermore, she was also highly commended for her short story which she submitted to the short story competition.

Why I support The Foundation MAJOR BENEFACTOR OF THE FOUNDATION TIM HENDERSON (CO72)

to offer them. The bursary programme, which I am pleased to support, enables children to benefit and give them a great start as without this kind of support they probably would not experience this type of education.

Although I was born in London, I spent most of my early years growing up in Northern Rhodesia, now Zambia. I went to board at Truro School in 1968 as my Father believed a good education to be ‘the key to success’.

I tried to make the most of my time at Truro, playing lots of sport and enjoying everything that was available. Whilst I was not the most academic, the Truro School education provided me with other invaluable life skills too; self-esteem, work ethic, social skills and common sense – all things essential to succeed in any business or career. I have since gone on to gain a Masters Degree so my motto is ‘never give up’.

I was grateful for the experiences offered and so, now that I have made my own way in life and enjoyed a successful career, I am delighted to be able to give something back. The Foundation is enabling youngsters, good all-rounders, to be able to benefit from everything that a Truro School education has 08

I hope those that we are able to help, and others who have benefited in the past will do as I have, and try to give something back so that the work can continue and change more lives for the better.

Although my work has taken me all over the world, and now my home is in Scotland, I visit Cornwall regularly as I have business interests in the county. I have visited the School and met with Graham Hooper and Nicky Berridge to learn more about the work of the Trustees and their aspirations for the future of the Foundation – to widen access further and help more deserving youngsters.

When times allow, I hope to meet with the Sixth Form students that I am helping to support this year and learn more about their plans post Truro School.

Transforming Lives IMPACT OF YOUR GIVING RACHEL VAUGHAN (CO 1998)

son is a cross-country running, drama-loving chorister and our daughter is a balletdancing, judo-throwing trombonist.

Rachel Vaughan is an Old Truronian (CO98) and now teaches English at Truro School, amongst other things: She has been Chair of the Truro School Association for several years, is Lead Mentor to the Girl Choristers and Head of Common Room. In January 2020 Rachel agreed to become a co-opted member of the Foundation Board because it is a cause close to her heart being a bursary recipient herself. Rachel is married to fellow Old Truronian Guy Vaughan (CO98) – they have two young children, both now enjoying Truro School Prep.

“My ‘moment-seizing’ mentality was certainly greatly encouraged by my inspirational Headmaster, Guy Dodd, who later established the Truro School Foundation, and it has stayed with me for life.

only of how impressed I was by boys and girls and their families willing to give their all for the chance to be part of Truro School.

I was delighted and greatly honoured to be invited to become a Trustee of the Truro School Foundation some seven years after I retired as Headmaster.

Kathy and I have very fond memories of our time in Cornwall and although family circumstances caused us to move to the other side of the country in retirement, we still hold Truro School dear in our hearts.

Indeed, one of the most pleasurable aspects of being Headmaster was to follow the course of those on bursaries and see how they made the most of their opportunities academically, socially, culturally and on the sports field.

I remember fondly seeing bursary students progress through the ranks to become outstanding students, talented musicians and sportsmen and women, as well as leaders in their peer group.

Through the good work of the Development Office and Former Pupils Association (TSA) I have been able to follow their achievements in the outside world as they make their substantial mark - a true testimony to the importance of the bursary scheme and the excellence of tuition at Truro School.

At a time when political envy and misguided thought on social mobility is prevalent, I believe it is vital that the Foundation flourishes and enables Truro School to remain true to its traditions in providing a first class education for as many as possible, whatever their means.

I therefore feel truly privileged in making whatever contribution I can to developing and growing the Foundation. It also provides Kathy and me with a perfect excuse to return periodically to Cornwall and to attend the reunion functions in London and Bristol to stay connected with Old Truronians who have become old friends.

I have read with some incredulity the recollections of some Old Truronians of their fear at being interviewed by the Headmaster in their bid for a bursary, as my memories are

Some years ago, Guy gently persuaded me to make a regular donation to the Foundation Fund, and I have been glad to do so ever since. I can say in all honesty that the education I received from my years at the school have been a priceless benefit to me personally, allowing me to realise whatever potential I may have had as an individual.

Truro School remains an institution of extraordinary value compared to so many, achieving not just academic and sporting excellence, but also imbuing pupils with

A core Methodist belief of course is that advantages are to be shared by all and not just restricted to the fortunate few.

The school has always tried to help those who might benefit from the education it offers, but who are otherwise barred by financial restraints. Today, with the particularly challenging economic environment we face, the need for a properly resourced Fund has never been greater.

Like so many of us whose lives were touched by former Headmaster Guy Dodd’s long and exceptional service to Truro School, I was greatly saddened at the news of his passing. I was hoping that those of us who are part of the School family might find a way to commemorate Guy in a more permanent way than with just a memorial service.

Transforming Lives IMPACT OF YOUR GIVING BURSARY STORY – CONRAD HOLC (CO 2010)

Written by Old Truronian Conrad Holc CO 2010 I was fortunate enough to receive a bursary from Truro School for the duration of my time there, and without which it would not have been possible for me to attend.

While I’m sure I would have done well at any school, the teaching and opportunities available at Truro certainly helped me to achieve my full potential.

All my teachers pushed me (and all students for that matter) to excel academically, encouraged me to be ambitious and supported me in achieving my goals.

One particular example of the support offered at Truro stands out to me. As the first member of my immediate family to apply to university, the process was unfamiliar. In particular, the interviews required as part of the applications for top universities such as Oxbridge seemed very daunting. However, in addition to providing excellent guidance on the application process, some of my

teachers also generously took the time to help prepare by offering mock interviews.

I found these invaluable, giving me the confidence I needed to shine during the real interviews, which led to an offer from the University of Cambridge.

Since leaving Truro, I have obtained an MSci in Natural Sciences at Cambridge and a DPhil in Materials from the University of Oxford, where my thesis focussed on the effect of water on lithium-air batteries.

I have since moved to the University of Nottingham as a post-doctoral researcher and am currently working on other nextgeneration batteries.

I have no doubt that my time at Truro has led me to where I am today and will always be grateful for the bursary which made it possible. The bursaries provided by the Foundation can truly change the lives of bright young people.

of this fund itself is a demonstration of the community spirit that exists: Truro School is not just an education establishment, it is a community in itself, and an important part of Cornwall’s infrastructure. I believe that children should receive the best education they can, in whatever setting and in whatever circumstances. Truro School has an important part to play in that, not only through its wideranging education but also through its bursary provision.

As Chair of Governors, it has been a delight to see the magnificent way in which the school has rallied during this year in such challenging times.

It has been a pleasure to see Andy Johnson, our new Head, settle into his post. He has been excited to take up the challenge and we are all looking forward to seeing how our Head shapes the progress of the school and his aim to make the school widely available for more students in the Cornish community and beyond.

The Governing Body of the school sits in the background and provides strategic direction challenge and support to the school leader, but Truro School benefits not only from a strong governing body but also a highly dedicated, active and focused Truro School Foundation.

The Foundation has done wonderful work this year in supporting the school in difficult times as well as initiating and seeding the Emergency Bursary Fund. The very existence 16

I knew Guy for many years both inside and outside the school.

Rarely is it the case that people leave an indelible mark, but Guy has certainly done that at Truro School.

His presence was still very much enjoyed up until his sad passing, but his memory is everywhere around us at the school. We have all been touched by his contribution and now it is our turn to help, through whatever means possible.

Guy believed in the potential of young people. He believed in the power of great teachers and great education to unlock that potential. And he was deeply committed to the role of Truro School in the wider community of Cornwall.

The nagging question throughout his career was ‘Why is this fabulous all-round education only available to those whose parents can afford it?’ He was devastated that the government withdrew assisted places just as he arrived at Truro School, thus denying

access to further generations of less well-off Cornish children who might have won places.

The bursary which will be named after him will be a wonderful tribute to him and will encapsulate his beliefs and values. The family are very touched and grateful for this appeal in his memory.

Thank you for your generous support - it is a wonderful way to honour his memory and uphold the values that he held so dear.

Posthumous Farewell FROM OUR FOUNDING CHAIRMAN GUY DODD

Words of thanks and farewell from our founding Chairman (Written in February before his untimely death in May) Guy wrote these words to be included in the Foundation update newsletter which was intended to be sent in April 2020, but which was delayed due to COVID-19 and lockdown. We felt it appropriate to share them with you now.

It was in the autumn of 2015 that Andrew Gordon-Brown asked me to take on the role of Chairman of the emerging Truro School Foundation. Aware of the dangers of oldtimers hanging on to office for too long I agreed to a three-year stint and now - over four years later - I am handing on the baton.

Graham Hooper, who has taken over from me, is absolutely committed to the work of the Foundation and I could not be happier in my successor.

It has been a rewarding and fulfilling time.

It has been a privilege to work with a wholly dedicated group of Trustees and to have had the backing and guidance of an outstanding home team in Jayne Grigg and Nicky Berridge. Support in terms of outright donations, on-going commitments to periodic payments and promises of future legacies has been encouraging. Of course, there will always be some way to go but we are well on the way and have been able to make significant contributions to enable boys and girls to attend the School when family circumstances would not allow it.
