Trumbull County ESC, Discount Drug Mart Facilitate COVID-19 Vaccination Clinic for 2,300-plus School Employees

More than 2,300 Trumbull County school employees received their COVID-19 vaccines in two doses in February and March.

The Trumbull County Educational Service Center, in partnership with Discount Drug Mart, facilitated a COVID-19 vaccination clinic for employees of 27 school districts across Trumbull County. including public, private, parochial and charter.

Employees were vaccinated Feb. 26 and March 19 at a temporary clinic set up at the former TJ Maxx store, provided by the Cafaro Company, at the Great East Plaza in Niles. Panera Bread supplied the coffee to our volunteers.

Trumbull County PREP BOWL

160 Students From Across Trumbull LORDSTOWN – Forty teams from schools across Trumbull County participated in the 2021 Prep Bowl Challenge during three weekends in March.

Howland Middle School placed first and Liberty Middle School placed second in the March 6 Elementary School Challenge.

In the High School Challenge, held March 13, Howland claimed the top spot while Champion placed runner up.

LaBrae Middle School won and McDonald was runner up in the March 27 Middle School Challenge.

Each year, prep bowl teams from Trumbull County schools compete to showcase their academic skills. The Trumbull County Educational Service Center sponsors the academic challenge.

Last year, elementary and junior high teams were able to participate; however, the statewide school closure in March 2020 due to COVID-19 halted the prep bowl just before the high school round.

County Meet Academic Challenge Protocols - such as social distancing - were put in place this year to keep the players safe so all three events could be completed.

The prep bowl is also one of the initial events to resume since the shutdown.

“It’s been a great experience to be able to have this event in person and to see it through to the completion of each category,” said Jenny Pancake, a Trumbull County ESC Curriculum and Instruction Supervisor. “You can see how excited the students are to be back, returning to some of their normal activities. And we’re excited to have them back.

“We appreciate the support of our partnering school districts, the students and their families. We couldn’t have done this with out all of them.”

All events were held at Lordstown High School.

FEATURE STUDENT WORKS

Artworks created by students from public schools across Trumbull County are on display through May 8 at at The Trumbull Art Gallery, 158 N. Park Ave., Warren.

The exhibit, which opened May 8, features works by students in grades K-8. Family and friends are invited to view the art, Appointments are not required.

TAG is open Thursdays (noon to 6 p.m.), Fridays (Noon to 4 p.m.) and Saturdays (11 a.m. to 3 p.m.).

The 2021 Trumbull County Educational Service Center Annual High School Art Show will be April 22-25 and 28 at The Medici Museum of Art in Howland at 9350 E. Market St.

Judging will take place April 22. Hours for the public are 11 a.m. to 4 p.m.; however, appointments are required.

Because of COVID restrictions, no awards ceremony will be held this year.

TCESC SPEECH DEPARTMENT EMPLOYS 'GREEN SCREEN' TECHNOLOGY TO ENHANCE ONLINE LEARNING Kathy Morrow lifts her hands toward her computer in a gesture to welcome her young student to class.

The young boy on her screen smiles in response and the two begin communicating remotely as they have for the past several months in the midst of the COVID-19 pandemic.

A green felt backdrop hangs behind Morrow, but her student doesn't see that.

Instead, he sees a field of trees, a farm yard, or sometimes a beach.

"These are challenging times for everyone, but we've all adapted, the teachers, students, parents, families," Morrow said. "It really has been a collaborative effort to put the resources we have into a plan of action and make it all work together."

TCESC speech language pathologist Kathy Morrow, above, uses a green screen to enhance her online speech/therapy sessions. This new method of remote learning is among the many innovative ways TCESC employees have adapted and helped students and families adjust during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Morrow is a speech language pathologist for the Trumbull County ESC. This past year, she and other members of TCESC's Speech Department have successfully met challenges posed by COVID-19. Similar to specialists in TCESC’s other departments, some of Morrow's methods have changed this year. However, the primary goal of providing the best educational outcomes possible while working to meet health and safety protocols has remained.

Morrow has adapted by using a green screen similar to those employed by meteorologists or movie/TV producers to incorporate various backgrounds or create special effects. Morrow's is a large piece of green felt with an attached green pocket. Using this background, she can digitally “insert” herself into an unlimited number of computer-generated scenes – becoming an active part of her speech therapy activities. (The virtual background feature on Zoom, which Morrow uses, enables her to use uploaded images as part of the screen that is viewed by the student.) Continued on page 14.

SLP Rebecca Sauline explained that when working with deaf and hard-of-hearing students, it is always important to incorporate visual information to support their comprehension.

GREEN SCREEN "During the 2020-21 school year, providing handson speech/language therapy has been very challenging, and at times impossible because of the COVID-19 pandemic," Morrow said.

But using the green screen/Zoom technology during online/remote speech/language therapy has enabled her to provide speech/language therapy remotely from the telehealth suite inside the TCESC Central Office in Niles. Morrow uses downloaded and selfcreated backgrounds with her green screen, often coupled with felt picture pieces or picture manipulatives, as she targets individualized student IEP goals and objectives.

"I have embraced the green screen as a wonderful tool to assist me in making remote learning engaging for my young, preschool students." she said. "I have found that green screening helps to capture the attention of my students, holds their interest, and allows them to participate in fun, remote learning activities during speech/language therapy sessions."

The TCESC Speech Department’s 17 SLPs provide speech and language services to students with disabilities ranging from preschool to high school throughout Trumbull County schools.

“This is even more important when providing speech/language therapy services remotely, due to the possibility of disruptions in clear communication,” she said.

Digital materials, available on a number of speech/language therapy based websites, along with the use of a document camera allow her to screen share necessary visual supports when working with deaf and hard-of -hearing students.

Although learning and using the technology needed to conduct a green screen speech/language therapy session has been challenging, the sessions are highly rewarding, as most are successful and are enjoyed by the students and supported by their families.

The TCESC Speech Department participated in professional development and learning opportunities in order to build digital skills.

Whether it was formal training through the TCESC Curriculum & Instruction Department or the Ohio School Speech Pathology Educational Audiology Coalition or informal training through Facebook groups and YouTube tutorials, the department jumped into learning and creating digital lessons and therapy practices.

During the pandemic, they quickly shifted their therapy to a digital platform so students could continue to receive services while learning in remote settings. Although some students have returned to in-person learning, families of others have chosen to remain remote.

At the start of the 20-21 school year, Jill Benner began using Google Classroom with all of her families, either in a separate speech-only classroom or as a co-teacher with their primary teachers. She posted weekly speech updates and extension activities to acclimate families in checking and using the site.

For Morrow and her students, one of the most enjoyed activities has included use of a carefully positioned green screen pocket to feed a pictured animal that is projected on my green screen.

Because the green pocket is not visible to the student, it appears as if the animal is eating the felt pieces as they disappear in his mouth. Another popular activity is singing and gesturing songs such as, “The Wheels on the Bus” and “Five Little Monkeys,” as she changes as many as 63 corresponding screens that correlate with the song.

As the year became unsettled and waffled between remote and hybrid, she used Google Classroom to post communications including Boom Learning activities, sign-up sheets, and Zoom links. Google Classroom has allowed her to quickly communicate with parents both on an individual level and in a mass form. Parents report feeling that they know what is going on now more that she posts about activities. Parents have also said they are comfortable knowing they are able to contact her quickly.
