As we approach the end of the 2022-2023 school year, I wanted to take a moment to reflect on the incredible journey we have been on together. It has been a year filled with challenges, triumphs, and moments of growth, and I am immensely proud of each and every one of you.

On Friday, May 5th, the Trumbull County Educational Service Center hosted its annual Scholarship Breakfast at the Grand Resort in Howland. The event celebrated academic excellence by awarding nearly $40,000.00 in scholarships to Trumbull County students.

Woofter Foundation Scholarship The Woofter Foundation presented the award of excellence and a $2,000 scholarship to Natalie Scott of Champion and Gabriella Trobek of Hubbard.

TRUMBULL COUNTY SUPERINTENDENTS’ ASSOCIATION The TCSA awarded a $500.00 scholarship to Gia Graziano of Girard. Each year the award is given to a student entering postsecondary studies with a major in Education.

The Love Life Foundation

Katelyn Obermiyer of Mathews High School was awarded a $500.00 scholarship. The award is given annually to a graduating senior from a Trumbull County High School who participates in the TCESC spring art show. The scholarship is provided by the Love Life Foundation, which is a part of the Community Foundation of Mahoning Valley and was created in memory of Jarrett Hutton.

2023 TCESC SCHOLARSHIP RECIPIENTS Franklin B. Walter Award Niles City School District senior Alaina Thigpen is the 2023 Trumbull County Franklin B. Walter All-Scholastic Award recipient. In May, Alaina received a $2,500 scholarship from the Trumbull County Educational Service Center Governing Board at the scholarship breakfast at Avalon Inn. All other nominees for the award received $500 scholarships for textbooks.

The Franklin B. Walter All-Scholastic Award was established in 1989 by OESCA (Ohio Educational Service Center Association) to promote and recognize outstanding student leaders for their academic achievements and service to their schools and communities. One senior from each county in Ohio is eligible to receive this annual award.

37TH ANNUAL CIVIC DAY

The Trumbull County Educational Service Center hosted the 37th Annual Civic Day, on Friday, March 31st, at the DiVieste Banquet Center. The event, which highlighted the importance of civic duties, brought together 20 Trumbull County School districts, over 100 students, and multiple civic officials from Trumbull County.

The event's keynote speaker was Col. Jeff Van Dootingh, commander of the 910th Airlift Wing Youngstown Air Reserve Station.

With over 30 years of distinguished service, Col. Van Dootingh provided a unique perspective on civic duties and their role. He also shared his valuable experiences and insights with the students to motivate and encourage them to be more responsible citizens.

Handle With Care In March, TCESC C&I Supervisor Denise Holloway partnered with the Ohio State Highway Patrol to introduce "Handle with Care" to Trumbull County Districts, first responders, and local mental health organizations. Ohio Handle With Care is a traumainformed, collaborative, cross-systems response to adverse childhood experiences that promotes resilience through positive relationships between school staff and first responders.

This collaboration between our districts, local first responders, and TCESC aims to alert school staff when a child experiences an adverse event so that they can handle the child with care.

Aligned first responders inform the TCESC Handle With Care team of the specific student who experienced the traumatic event. The team then relays the message to the school district, enabling them to provide proper care for the affected student.

Lieutenant Morrison of the Ohio State Highway Patrol Warren Post brought the program to the TCESC several months ago, emphasizing the importance of community support for young children's mental well-being during adverse events. 'Handle with Care' helps children understand that everyone in their community, especially the school district and first responders, cares for their wellbeing," said Morrison.

74 Years Of Service

A.I. TAKEOVER

At the March 20th Trumbull County Educational Service Center Board of Education meeting, the TCESC Board accepted the retirement resignations of Treasurer Lori Simione and Pupil Service Director Kathleen Vilsack.

Simione has dedicated 27 years of her career to education, starting in Girard in 1996 before joining the Trumbull County Educational Service Center (TCESC) as Assistant Treasurer in 1997. Within a year, she transitioned to Treasurer, a role she has held for the past 24 years.

As TCESC Treasurer, Simione manages the budget, grants, and payroll for 300 employees at the ESC. She also serves as Treasurer of the Insurance Consortium of Trumbull County Schools and oversees the financial transactions of the Trumbull County Transportation Consortium. In addition, Simione has been called upon to serve as Interim Treasurer for several Trumbull County school districts, including Bristol, Howland, Liberty, Maplewood, McDonald, Niles, Southington, and Weathersfield.

“I am so grateful to have had a position where I am happy to come to work every day and to be surrounded by so many professionals whom I respect,” Simione said.

Vilsack began her career in education 47 years ago at Fairhaven as first a classroom teacher, then a Home Based Teaching Consultant, and finally a supervisor, where she found her passion in guiding the teaching staff.

“AI Won't Replace You, But A Person Using It Will” The Trumbull County ESC collaborated with the Hamilton County ESC on Thursday, March 23rd, for a professional development session for principals and C&I supervisors to learn about the benefits and things to look for in Chat GPT, a new wave of artificial intelligence technology.

Chat GPT is a machine-learning model that simulates human intelligence processes, such as learning, reasoning, and selfcorrection.

During the session, Rebecca Dwenger and Jennifer Haller from HCESC provided an overview of the history of AI and demonstrated how it's already being used in our daily lives. The focus was on how educators can use Chat GPT to assist them in their teaching and what they should remember when using it.

In 1986, Vilsack joined the TCESC as a Multiple Disability Supervisor, where her career goals continued with another more extensive group of partners with school districts, teachers, assistants, and related services providers.

“I have learned so much from all the experiences, relationships, and professional development I have had while working as an administrator in education specific to disabilities,” said Vilsack.

SCIENCE OF READING On May 10th, the statemandated dyslexia training session, led by the AIM Institute, included K-12 educators from Lakeview, Champion, Girard, Howland, Weathersfield, and the Trumbull County Educational Service Center (TCESC). By the end of the day, 490 educators from Trumbull County will have been trained to meet the standards of Ohio House Bill 436. The session focused on 'Language Comprehension as defined in The Simple View of Reading.'

As Pupil Services Director, she oversees the TCESC’s special education services through classroom and related professional service programs. These programs help school districts to identify children with disabilities and provide them with an appropriate public education.

“My feelings toward retirement show gratitude and a certain sense of contentment with what I have accomplished in the career I chose for myself,” said Vilsack.

Both retirements will be effective as of July 31, 2023.

N.Y. Times Best Seller Engages With Pre-K

Preschool students at TCESC's Niles Primary School had an exciting opportunity to engage in an interactive story-reading activity with the renowned children's book author Laura Numeroff, a New York Times bestseller. As part of the activity, each child was gifted a book authored by Numeroff to take home. Numeroff is highly acclaimed for her book "If You Give a Mouse a Cookie."

LIBERTY LEARNING CENTER INAUGURAL ART EXIBIT

GIVING BACK

The Trumbull County Educational Service Center's Learning Center at Liberty hosted its first annual Student Art Exhibit on April 5th, showcasing the extraordinary artistic abilities of students from the ED and MD units. The event was a resounding success, with families invited to admire the impressive array of paintings, drawings, sculptures, and other artworks.

As part of their hands-on vocational training, some of our ED Vocational Unit students provided landscaping services at historical sites around Trumbull County. Most recently, they landscaped the grounds of the Ward Thomas House in Niles, a 14-room historic home built in 1862 that is now a museum.

The inspiration for the exhibit came from the Learning Center staff, who noticed the remarkable artistic talents of many of their students. They recognized that the art show would be a perfect opportunity for students to showcase their abilities and for families to appreciate their hard work and dedication.

Raymond Wolfgang, the intervention specialist who organized the exhibit, was amazed by the student's creativity. “The students simply amazed me with all of their ideas, their creativity, and their passion for making amazing pieces of art. I am not artistically talented and am just overwhelmed by the level of talent in our hallway. There are so many amazing students who have so much to be proud of,” said Wolfgang.

TRUMBULL COUNTY HIGH SCHOOL ART SHOW In April, the Trumbull County Educational Service Center hosted the annual TCESC High School Art Show at the Medici Museum of Art in Howland. The event showcased over 150 works from 18 Trumbull County school districts. Artists were judged in five categories, including new this year, the People's Choice Award, and a scholarship award recipient.

DRONES IN SCHOOL The TCESC, Pittsburgh Institute of Aeronautics (PIA), and Winner Aviation hosted the second Trumbull County Drone Racing League Tournament on March 25th, where nine teams competed. Congratulations to our winners!

Southington Drone Cats 1st Place, Head to Head Mineral Ridge High School 1st Place, Capture the Flag Brookfield The Fuel Judges Presentation Award

In just their second year of participating in the Drones in School program, the Brookfield High School team, The Fuel, qualified for the National Competition held May 11-12 in Denver, Colorado. The team attended, finishing in 6th place (of 12 schools) in the Capture the Flag competition and received 4th for their video presentation.
