FROM TCESC SUPERINTENDENT MICHAEL HANSHAW On behalf of the Trumbull County Educational Service Center, I want to thank you for a successful 2021-2022 school year. As we look back, I couldn’t be more proud of our educators' and students' work and dedication this year.

In this edition of The Educator, you will learn about some of the new programs the TCESC has developed, including the Education Extension, an industry-recognized pre-apprenticeship program. Also, in May, nearly $40,000 in scholarships were awarded at our Annual Scholarship Recognition Breakfast to scholars who have made significant impacts in their classrooms and communities.

As we conclude this academic year, I look forward to working with all of you and continuing this strong momentum into 20222023. As always, thank you for your dedication and service to our Trumbull County students as we continue to work together for educational excellence.

Trumbull County ESC 2022 Scholarship Recipients Girard City School District senior Kaylynn Thomas is the 2022 Franklin B. Walter All-Scholastic Award recipient. In May, Kaylynn received a $2,500 scholarship from the Trumbull County Educational Service Center Governing Board at the scholarship breakfast at Avalon Inn. All other nominees for the award received $500 scholarships for textbooks.

The Franklin B. Walter AllScholastic Award was established in 1989 by OESCA (Ohio Educational Service Center Association) to promote and recognize outstanding student leaders for their academic achievements and service to their schools and communities. One senior from each county in Ohio is eligible to receive this annual award.

Kaylynn is the daughter of Kevin and Linda Thomas. She will be attending Walsh University this fall and majoring in legal studies, emphasizing child advocacy.

Down Syndrome Awareness Day On March 21st, districts from across Trumbull County celebrated National Down Syndrome Awareness day. They teamed up by having students sign a banner pledging to accept, include, and respect everyone in the school and community.

Trumbull County

In April, The Trumbull County Drone Racing League held its inaugural event at the Pittsburgh Institute of Aeronautics and Winner Aviation.

The initial contest consisted of six teams, including Brookfield, Joseph Badger, LaBrae, Lordstown, McDonald, and Southington. Teams competed in three competitions, including head-to-head racing, capture the flag, and overall team presentation, where judges ranked the teams on creativity and the process behind getting ready.

Drone Racing League Brookfield brought home the overall team championship, scoring 336.5 total points.

“The students and coaches of the participating districts made this inaugural season a true success. It was their determination and perseverance that propelled the program to new heights.

We are looking forward to expanding the program in years to come and the partnerships established with PIA and Winner Aviation.”

36th AnnualCIVIC DAY

Nearly one hundred Trumbull County high school students spent time with civic officials for the 36th annual Civic Day. The event gives the students the ability to receive hands-on learning experiences with officials in career paths that may interest them. The group gathered at DiVieste's Banquet Centre, where they heard a presentation from keynote speaker Ohio Treasurer Robert Sprague.

Sprague noted to the students that the experiences and lessons they learned today could carry on for a lifetime.

"Civic Day is a great day for the students of Trumbull County who are interested in a civic position. The day gives the students real-life experiences with an official that typically doesn't happen in the classroom. I am extremely thankful for all the officials who took the time to participate. This day would not be possible without them."

Brooklyn Bokan, a senior at McDonald High School, took advantage of the Civic Day opportunity to learn more about her potential career path as a Clerk of Courts. Brooklyn spent her day with Karen Allen, the Trumbull County Clerk of Courts, and described the day she will cherish. “I witnessed so much; I got to see the largest courtroom in Ohio, met Judge Rice, met so many wonderful people who gave me advice and showed me the daily process of courts. It was nice to get that experience,” Brooklyn explained. Brooklyn plans to attend Youngstown State University this fall to begin her studies in pre-law.

Education Extension The TCESC was awarded the Innovative Workforce Incentive Program Grant through the Ohio Department of Education and the Governor’s Office of Workforce Transformation for nearly $300,000 to establish a new industry-recognized credential program for high school students across Trumbull County. The newly renovated faculty for the program will be located at Lordstown Elementary School.

At the Education Extension, students will gain essential building trades experience. At the same time, they’ll complete a staterecognized pre-apprenticeship program, which includes instruction in mathematics, employability skills, and projectbased learning. Upon completing the two-year Education Extension pre-apprenticeship program, each graduate will be eligible to receive a 12-point industry-recognized credential that gains them direct admission into an apprenticeship program with the support of the Ohio Carpenters.

Trumbull County High School Art Show

Students again showcased their artistic talents in the annual Trumbull County ESC High School Art Show at the Medici Museum of Art in Howland.

Ninety-four students participated in this year's event, representing 14 Trumbull County districts.

Emily Bennett from Lakeview took first place in the “Best in Show." Bethany Moten, Warren JFK, received the top honor in the “3-D category.”

Hubbard’s Gabrielle Jones took first place in the “Digital Award.” The “Jurors Award” went to Lee Ann Morton from Howland.

Going Green

Kaitlin Tofilski, a TCESC intervention specialist in the multiple disability unit in Liberty, is teaching her students the importance of going green! Kaitlin has worked in the district for seven years and noticed a need for a recycling program. With the Liberty administration's approval, Kaitlin, alongside her students and Mrs. Denning's classroom, have begun collecting weekly recyclables each Wednesday and Friday.

The classes take large bins around and empty all the classrooms' small recycling bins. They then recognize and sort items that can be recycled and items that cannot.

"Recycling has been growing weekly since we started and sometimes we make several trips to the recycling center behind the high school because we have so much of it. Building independence, knowledge, and helping the planet are the biggest goals." -Kaitlin Tofliski

Summer of Growth The TCESC is thrilled to host our annual summer professional learning opportunities, also known as the Summer of Growth. Educators have become accustomed to the seminars each year even though the challenging times of Covid-19.

This year we are excited about the return of faceto-face seminars. At one of the sessions titled "Implementing the Use of Text Sets," Dr. Dan Reynolds, Assistant Professor of English and Literacy Education at John Carroll University, assists teachers in designing scaffolds to achieve success with grade-level text. The goal is to have more students actively learning from on-gradelevel text. In a new online course this summer, "The Leader In Me," participants will recognize the need for educators to bring the seven habits of highly effective people into their schools and classrooms to foster a positive culture that prioritizes academic performance and leadership principles within each student.

The 2023 Summer of Growth will feature some special keynote speakers, including Amie Dean, Dr. Douglas Reeves, and R. Keeth Matheny.
