YSU PROFESSOR, LAB RATS ILLUSTRATE SCIENTIFIC METHOD AT BAKER ELEMENTARY SCHOOL

IN THIS EDITION:

Youngstown State University professor Dr. Jill Tall traveled to Baker Elementary School on Friday, November 22, 2019, to help educate students in Kristen Terlecky’s third grade science classes.

Dr. Tall, who earned her PhD in biomedical science with focus on neurobiology and pharmacology, brought her albino lab rats to help students gain a better understanding of the scientific method. During her visit, Dr. Tall detailed the lives of lab rats. She explained their behaviors and discussed their eating habits. She then proposed a question to the students about whether the rats, which primarily eat grains, would be more tempted to try a piece of papaya or a cracker if both items were presented to them.

BAKER ELEMENTARY STUDENT WINS CHALLENGE 24 MATH COMPETITION Baker Elementary School student Carter Jones won first place in the Challenge 24 competition, beating out all of the other competitors in the fifth grade. The countywide math competition was held on November 20, 2019, at Warren G. Harding High School. Baker Elementary School fourth grade student Mike Leonard defeated 30 other students in his grade, earning himself a second place trophy in the competition. The elementary team, which is coached by Mrs. Lucas, had seven other students also earn medals for making it to the semi-final round.

The junior high Challenge 24 team had three students finish in the top 20. Seventh graders Gage Davis, Grady Garrett and Matt Neely placed in the top 20 after competing in the 7th/8th grade division. Gage went on to make it into the semi-finals, finishing 9th out of 64 students.

MATHEWS HIGH SCHOOL STUDENT WINS NATIONAL AWARD Mathews High School student Isaiah Harley recently

finished

first

in

a

national

competition.

Harley,

who

is

in

the

Interactive

Media

Program at Trumbull Career and Technical Center, was among over 700 students who competed

in

the

Stukent

Social

Media

Marketing Challenge. Students were tasked with managing a $5,000 weekly budget in

simulated ad dollars for a fictitious company.

The ad dollars could be put toward social media marketing on platforms such as Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, LinkedIn, YouTube and Pinterest. The winners were determined by who generated the highest revenue on Mimic Social, a platform that teaches audiences targeting, how to promote and schedule social media content, as well as mastering the key performance indicators that drive product sales.

SCIENTIFIC METHOD CONT. The

students

formed

their

hypothesis,

expressing they believed the rats would be inclined to try the papaya. Then, Dr. Tall conducted the experiment. At the end of the experiment, students drew the conclusion that the rats preferred the sweeter food.

“I hope that our third graders have been able to gain a better understanding of how the scientific process can be applied to a real world experience. I think that it's important for these elementary students to see how fun and exciting science can be, and we are fortunate that Dr. Tall was willing to share her

expertise

and

provide

that

positive

example for them,” said teacher Kristen Terlecky.

Teachers talked with their students about what it means to be respectful and nominated students from their class who demonstrated these traits. Congratulations to all of our respectful Mustangs!

Kylie has been playing volleyball since she was in seventh grade. This year, she was a co-captain of the volleyball team. She also plays softball at Mathews.

This was Ethan's first year playing football.

He is also a catcher on the Mathews High School baseball team, where he has been a member for four years.
