Tom Murray ​serves as the Director of Innovation for Future Ready Schools®, a project of the Alliance for Excellent Education, located in Washington, D.C. He has testified before the United States Congress and has worked alongside that body, the US Senate, the White House, the US Department of Education and state departments of education, corporations, and school districts throughout the country to implement student-centered learning while helping to lead Future Ready Schools® and Digital Learning Day. His best-selling book, ​Learning Transformed: 8 Keys to Designing Tomorrow’s Schools, Today​, is co-authored with Eric Sheninger and published by ASCD. His next book, ​Personal & Authentic​, is due out in mid-October.

Prior to moving to his role in Washington, D.C., Murray served as an elementary teacher, middle school teacher, middle school principal, elementary principal, and director of technology & cyber education for the Quakertown Community School District in Bucks County, Pennsylvania. He is most passionate about creating cultures of innovation where teachers are empowered to create the types of learning experiences today's modern learners need to thrive.

Amie Dean​ has a passion for the problem students of the world. The

students who are disrespectful, defiant, broken, and shut down have been a part of her every day for 25 years. As a former special education teacher, Amie spent many years teaching in classrooms with the most challenging students on campus and found a way to reach each and every one. She believes most teachers truly want to help these students – want to believe in them – but are not trained on HOW to do it. This has become Amie’s new personal mission – to help teachers implement positive, practical strategies in their classrooms to save our most challenging students – and themselves.

Carol Dissen​ has worked for the Center on Teaching and Learning at the University of Oregon for the past 14 years coordinating the delivery and implementation of federally funded literacy grants and technical assistance projects. For over twenty years Carol has delivered school, regional, state, national, and international professional development workshops and in-building coaching and model lessons to support evidence-based practices to educators. Carol has worked extensively in the areas of building strong Tier I systems of instruction, intensification of interventions for non-responders, literacy leadership to support a strong Multi-tiered System of Support (MTSS), and is one of the authors of the Enhanced Core Reading Instruction curriculum.

Prior to joining the team at the Center on Teaching and Learning, she worked in elementary schools as a K-6 literacy coach, Title 1 reading teacher, and classroom teacher.

Charity Dodd​ has 20 years in education as a teacher, counselor, director of a program for our most at-risk youth, work in a non-profit organization to assist schools in improving education and a blended learning coach!

She has degrees and licenses from THE Ohio State University, University of Dayton, and Mount Vernon Nazarene University. She’s a proud mom to three beautiful daughters, Sydney, Kaitlyn, and Sophia. Her husband, Bobby, encourages and challenges her every day to make a difference!

Her superpower is being a helper to others! This is her passion and purpose in life and being in the role of supporting educators brings so much joy and fulfillment!

Katie Garner, M.Ed.​ (author of best-selling book, ​Secret Stories® Cracking the Reading Code with the Brain in Mind​) is an internationally known keynote speaker, author and literacy consultant with twenty-five years of experience working in elementary grade classrooms across the country, and a passion for infusing neuroscience into literacy and learning! Her “backdoor-to-the-brain” approach to fast-tracking phonics skills for reading and writing, via social-emotional learning channels, shifts the paradigms associated with traditional reading instruction and has gained national recognition with the No Child Left Behind, Reading First, and RTI Initiatives. Katie is an annually featured and keynote speaker at education conferences across the United States and abroad, including an ongoing keynote series with North American literacy leaders, Richard Allington (​What Really Matters for Struggling Readers​) and Anne Cunningham (​The National Early Literacy Panel “NELP” Report​) at the Vulnerable Learners Summits. Bernadette Lambert​ is a literacy strategist and writer who teams with

districts and schools across the U.S. designing units and lessons that engage and accelerate learners. Her experiences as a former middle school teacher and a K-12 district-level literacy coach guide her as she recommends and models intentional practices to increase academic vocabulary use, weave writing across the curriculum, and support independent purposeful reading. She is the author of ​Moving Beyond Quadrant A: Developing Rigor, Relevance, and Learner Engagement in Your Classroom​ and ​Strategy-Building Bookmarks That Can Be Used With Any Text​.

101 - Using Revised Standards Documents to Plan Instruction (K-3)

The Ohio Department of Education has created many resources to help teachers implement the 2017 Ohio Learning Standards for Mathematics. This session will break down each of the documents to help participants identify how each resource can be used in their classrooms as they prepare to implement the 2017 revisions. Participants will use the documents to analyze and begin planning a lesson within a unit of instruction for their own classrooms with these materials during the session.

High-quality implementation of multi-tiered systems of support (MTSS) requires robust core reading instruction to improve the reading outcomes of students in kindergarten, first, and second grade. The purpose of this session is to demonstrate how instructional routines can enhance the delivery of core reading instruction to ensure teaching is more dynamic, efficient, and effective. Practice opportunities and application of systematic strategies and teaching routines will be integrated throughout. Come to this presentation to learn about dyslexia screening with DIBELS 8. Just under half of the United States requires elementary schools to screen students for dyslexia in the early grades. DIBELS is the most widely-recognized dyslexia screener among state education agencies. This presentation provides an overview of DIBELS 8’s features and technical adequacy and its utility for dyslexia screening. This presentation will provide an overview of an approach to dyslexia screening using CBMs, using examples from four updated DIBELS 8 measures (LNF, PSF, NWF, and WRF) that have been validated as dyslexia screeners. Participants will have the opportunity to engage in discussions about how DIBELS 8 data can be used to support dyslexia screening.

Through dynamic discussion and hands-on activities, participants will learn how to intensify instruction through the strategic integration of orthographic mapping, spelling, and writing, and how to implement mastery monitoring. Integrating instructional supports to help address specific cognitive processing challenges, like self-regulation and attribution, will also be highlighted. At the end of the session, participants will leave with a comprehensive framework and strategies for intensifying reading instruction.

214 - Effective and Efficient Progress Monitoring: How to make well-informed and timely decisions about the instructional needs of your students

Presenter: S ​ mith, Sara Audience: ​K-3 ELA Learning Objective: ​Participants will inventory the tools they have available for assessment and progress monitoring to identify the skills they address, where programs overlap, and where there are skill gaps. Participants will identify tools that can be used for screening students and diagnosing skill gaps. Participants will develop an efficient progress monitoring plan to track student progress and growth in specific areas of need so they can know if interventions are successful.

Screening, diagnosing, and progress monitoring are essential to making sure that all students become fluent readers. Teachers can be overwhelmed by too many assessments and programs or, conversely, lack the tools they need to make informed instructional decisions for their students. Sometimes, teachers don’t even know which assessments and tools are at their disposal! Through facilitated discussion, this session will help teachers inventory the tools they have available so they can identify which students need support, pinpoint skill deficits, develop intervention plans, and efficiently progress monitor student growth.

STAR at Home was a pilot study that examined the ways in which STAR Read-Aloud Practices could be used to foster family engagement. Based on theoretical models of family engagement strategies, this program adapts STAR Read-Aloud Practices to include an at-home reading component to ultimately increase children’s print knowledge and strengthen caregiver involvement in school. What better way to promote reading readiness than to incorporate it in school and at home?

DIBELS is the most widely-recognized dyslexia screener among state education agencies. This presentation provides an overview of DIBELS 8’s features and technical adequacy and its utility for dyslexia screening. This presentation will provide an overview of an approach to dyslexia screening using CBMs, using examples from four updated DIBELS 8 measures (LNF, PSF, NWF, and WRF) that have been validated as dyslexia screeners. Participants will have the opportunity to engage in discussions about how DIBELS 8 data can be used to support dyslexia screening.

I struggled with getting my students to invest time and effort in creative writing. I tried hundreds of journal prompts and writing activities but nothing worked. Then, a simple idea had a profound impact on my classroom.

I realized that students are significantly more motivated when they know the content they create will reach a global audience. Rather than create a piece of homework for the teacher to mark and maybe sit on the fridge at home, they were authoring media-rich digital books for the world to see!

413 - Effective and Efficient Progress Monitoring: How to make well-informed and timely decisions about the instructional needs of your students

Presenter: ​Smith, Sara Audience: ​K-3 ELA Learning Objective: P ​ articipants will inventory the tools they have available for assessment and progress monitoring to identify the skills they address, where programs overlap, and where there are skill gaps. Participants will identify tools that can be used for screening students and diagnosing skill gaps. Participants will develop an efficient progress monitoring plan to track student progress and growth in specific areas of need so they can know if interventions are successful.

Screening, diagnosing, and progress monitoring are essential to making sure that all students become fluent readers. Teachers can be overwhelmed by too many assessments and programs or, conversely, lack the tools they need to make informed instructional decisions for their students. Sometimes, teachers don’t even know which assessments and tools are at their disposal! Through facilitated discussion, this session will help teachers inventory the tools they have available so they can identify which students need support, pinpoint skill deficits, develop intervention plans, and efficiently progress monitor student growth.
