Hubbard Elementary School students featured in national publication for short stories The work of several Hubbard Elementary School students will soon reside in The Library of Congress in Washington, D.C. Last fall, students in Robyn Fette’s fourth grade English language arts classes were encouraged to participate in the Young Writers’ Spooky Sagas Contest. Students had to rely on their creativity and imagination as they crafted a 100 word spooky story for the competition. Over 10,000 entries were submitted to the contest. Just recently, Hubbard Elementary School learned all of its students’ entries will be published in Spooky Sagas 2019 - Ohio Stories. The Spooky Sagas 2019 - Ohio Stories is expected to be published in February. In addition to Hubbard Schools receiving a copy of the book, one will also be sent to The Library of Congress in Washington, D.C. to provide a lasting record of the students' achievements. In April, Young Writers will select the school district with the best set of entries as The Young Writers' Award of Excellence. The best published writer will also be recognized and receive an iPad and a trophy. Best of luck to our Hubbard writers!

FROM THE DESK OF THE SUPERINTENDENT Recently, our school district was able to enhance security at our three school buildings. Through a grant from the Ohio Attorney General’s Office and private donations, our district was able to install 3M Safety and Security Film to our windows and doors. 3M Safety and Security Film is designed to mitigate hazards from shattered glass, hinder and deter anyone trying to break and enter through a door or window, and slow potential intruders, which allows the district more time to activate its safety protocols. Our district recently received an additional grant from the Ohio Attorney General’s Office that will allow us to make even more security enhancements.

Hubbard High School students raise $600 for local food pantry Hubbard High School students helped to raise $600 for the First Baptist Church Food Pantry by participating in a holiday-themed week. Hubbard

spearheaded the event. To participate, students had to donate a canned food item or a dollar to the pantry.
On Monday, staff and students
donned flannel. On Tuesday, they wore holiday hats and head wear. On Wednesday, they dressed as
their
favorite

character.

HOLIDAY Our third and fourth grade students performed their holiday concert showcasing not only their music abilities, but also their choreography skills with a light show.
Hubbard High School staff and students celebrated the holiday season by dressing as their favorite holiday characters.

HUBBARD ELEMENTARY TEACHERS WIN $500 GRANT Hubbard Elementary School's fourth grade English language arts teachers, Mrs. Jenkins, Mrs. Fette and Mrs. Greenamyer, recently received a $500 grant from the Trumbull Retired Teachers Association. The Trumbull Retired Teachers Association provides two $500 grants for active teachers to support innovative activities in their classrooms, or for schoolwide activities. The grant program was open to all academic disciplines, grade levels and building activities. With the grant, Mrs. Jenkins, Mrs. Fette and Mrs. Greenamyer plan to purchase blank storybooks for the entire fourth grade. Students will implement the writing process by creating a storybook with their audience, kindergarten students, in mind. Once the fourth grade students complete the writing process, they will visit kindergarten classrooms and read their stories to a child in the room. Once the stories are read, the books will be given to the kindergarten student to take home with them.

HUBBARD ART STUDENTS VISIT FAIRHAVEN Six years ago, a group of Hubbard High School students wanted to get outside of the walls of the classroom and volunteer their time. They ended up visiting Fairhaven in Niles, where they have been traveling every year since, facilitating two Hubbard Art Days for the students of the preschool and workshop programs. The administration of Hubbard Schools has been incredibly supportive of this endeavor, which allows Hubbard students to become teachers for a day. Over the past couple of years, the district has had several students pursue educational careers after discovering their passion during these trips to Fairhaven. This year, 16 students traveled to Niles and ran five different stations. For some students, this was their first trip with the club. Others have participated for several years.
