Tom Murray ​serves as the Director of Innovation for Future Ready Schools®, a project of the Alliance for Excellent Education, located in Washington, D.C. He has testified before the United States Congress and has worked alongside that body, the US Senate, the White House, the US Department of Education and state departments of education, corporations, and school districts throughout the country to implement student-centered learning while helping to lead Future Ready Schools® and Digital Learning Day. His best-selling book, ​Learning Transformed: 8 Keys to Designing Tomorrow’s Schools, Today​, is co-authored with Eric Sheninger and published by ASCD. His next book, ​Personal & Authentic​, is due out in mid-October.

Prior to moving to his role in Washington, D.C., Murray served as an elementary teacher, middle school teacher, middle school principal, elementary principal, and director of technology & cyber education for the Quakertown Community School District in Bucks County, Pennsylvania. He is most passionate about creating cultures of innovation where teachers are empowered to create the types of learning experiences today's modern learners need to thrive.

Eric Curts ​has been in education for 27 years, and currently serves as a Technology Integration Specialist for SPARCC in Canton, Ohio where he oversees Google Apps for Education implementation, training, and support, as well as other technology integration initiatives. Eric is an authorized Google Education Trainer and Innovator, and provides Google Apps training to schools, organizations, and conferences throughout Ohio and across the country. He is a co-leader of the Ohio Google Educator Group at bit.ly/gegohio and runs the award-winning blog www.ControlAltAchieve.com where all of his Google Apps and edtech resources can be found.

Amie Dean​ has a passion for the problem students of the world. The

students who are disrespectful, defiant, broken, and shut down have been a part of her every day for 25 years. As a former special education teacher, Amie spent many years teaching in classrooms with the most challenging students on campus and found a way to reach each and every one. She believes most teachers truly want to help these students – want to believe in them – but are not trained on HOW to do it. This has become Amie’s new personal mission – to help teachers implement positive, practical strategies in their classrooms to save our most challenging students – and themselves.

Bernadette Lambert​ is a literacy strategist and writer and teams with districts and schools across the U.S. designing units and lessons that engage and accelerate learners. Her experiences as a former middle school teacher and a K-12 district-level literacy coach guide her as she recommends and models intentional practices to increase academic vocabulary use, weave writing across the curriculum, and support independent purposeful reading. She is the author of Moving Beyond Quadrant A: Developing Rigor, Relevance, and Learner Engagement in Your Classroom and Strategy-Building Bookmarks That Can Be Used With Any Text.

Bobby Dodd​ is the high school principal at William Mason High School in Mason, Ohio. He earned four degrees before determining what he wanted to do with his life...dedicate it to helping people. Dodd’s passion for helping others lead him to create new opportunities for students and staff such as digital academies, college summer camps, fabrication laboratories, Early College High School, and personalized learning environments for students and staff.

As an educator, Dodd actively communicates, collaborates and connects with stakeholders to help his school and the education field.

He has received awards for his contributions as a connected educator, including the 2016 NASSP Digital Principal of the Year award and he was a finalist for the 2017 Varsity Brands “Principal of Principle” award.

Dodd continues to assist others in the education field by presenting at the local, state and national levels as well as offering professional resources at www.TheEducationalLeaders.com. Dodd was a long-time co-moderator of #ohedchat, co-founder of EdCampLeader Ohio, and hosts a blog on educational leadership and effective instructional methods.

Dr. Joe Sanfelippo​ is the Superintendent of the Fall Creek School District in Fall Creek, WI. The Fall Creek School District was named an Innovative District in 2016 and 2017 by the International Center for Leadership in Education. Joe holds a BA in Elementary and Early Childhood Education from St. Norbert College, a MS in Educational Psychology from the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee, a MS in Educational Leadership, and a PhD in Leadership, Learning, and Service from Cardinal Stritch University. Joe is also an adjunct professor in the Educational Leadership Department at Viterbo University. Joe has taught Kindergarten, 2nd Grade, and 5th Grade. He was also a school counselor and high school coach prior to taking on an elementary principal position in 2005. He has served as a principal in suburban and rural Wisconsin.

Joe started the #1minwalk2work Leadership Challenge, and co-authored The Power of Branding-Telling Your School's Story, Principal Professional Development: Leading Learning in a Digital Age and Hacking Leadership: 10 Ways Great Leaders Inspire Learning That Teachers, Students and Parents Love. He was selected as 1 of 117 Future Ready Superintendents in 2014 and 1 of 50 Superintendents as a Personalized Learning Leader in 2016 by the US Department of Education. He attended summits at the White House for both distinctions. Joe was named 1 of 5 K-12 administrators to watch in 2018 by Education Dive. He has been a featured speaker in multiple states in the areas of Advancing the Use of Social Media for School Leaders, Telling Your School Story, Creating a Culture of Yes, and Personalized Professional Growth for Staff. #101 - Building Positive Relationships: With Your Students, Your Career, and Yourself

Presenter: B ​ ichler, Nicole Audience: 4 ​ -12 Learning Objective: ​Participants will learn trauma sensitive approaches to instruction, and effective strategies for calming yourself and your students within the classroom.

Does student behavior have you stressed out? This session is designed to help you avoid teacher burn-out while effectively making an impact in your profession. We will be discussing how childhood trauma relates to learning, how trauma manifests into the most commonly seen behavior concerns, and most importantly discovering how you can support students without overwhelming yourself. We will spend some time focusing on self-care and transferring that positive energy to your career and students.

#102 - Digital Danger: Forever and For All to See

Presenter: B ​ osley, Catherine Audience: 9 ​ -12 Learning Objective: ​Participants will learn about the pitfalls of social media sharing, such as the lack of security and privacy that can lead to a cyber-catastrophe to help students increase their literacy of digital dangers.

This session is high-energy, with a couple of games and prizes included, high-content and interactive. The message is timely and relevant to anyone who spends any time online...basically, all of us. In this day of digital everything, we are being exposed in a way we never imagined, which translates into a new reality that there is no more room for a ""what was I thinking moment,"" before it could become attached to you forever and for all to see...one mouse click away. Catherine shares how she learned the hard way how the cyber-world could turn a real-life world upside down in a "virtual" second. Her story landed her invites to appear on shows like Good Morning America, Oprah, Inside Edition and The O'Reilly Factor, to name a few. The cautionary, yet inspirational tale provides precious insight in regards to making better choices online and off to protect yourself and those you care about as well as strategy to rise above cyber-cruelty.

#103 - Mindfulness - The Benefits of Guided Meditation within the Classroom

Presenter: C ​ amelli, Gina Audience: 4 ​ -12 Learning Objective: ​Participants will learn techniques of meditation in order to implement short, guided meditations in their classrooms.

After a five minute guided meditation, we will identify the benefits of guided meditation in the classroom and how it can also be used to enhance mental clarity for teachers and students alike. Participants will receive resources they can use for meditation and we will end with another short guided meditation.

#104 - Using Revised Standards Documents to Plan Instruction (4-12)

Presenter: C ​ annelongo, Annie Audience: 4 ​ -12 Math Learning Objective: ​Participants will be able to utilize the various standards revision documents to plan and support instruction.

ODE has created many resources to help teachers implement the 2017 Ohio Learning Standards for Mathematics. This session will break down each of the documents to help participants identify how each resource can be used in their classroom as they prepare to implement the 2017 revisions. Participants will use the documents to analyze and begin planning a lesson within a unit of instruction for their own classroom with these materials during the session.

#105 - What Happens When I Push This Button? - Ohio as America Explained

Presenter: C ​ lark, Patrick Audience: 4 ​ -8 Social Studies Learning Objective: ​Participants will learn how to​ c​ onfidently incorporate our digital curriculum into their work as a 4th-8th Grade Social Studies teacher.

Through a generous funding opportunity, 4th Grade classrooms across Trumbull County have access to our engaging and authentic digital curriculum for social studies. This session will present the functions and interface of the curriculum to prepare you to integrate it into your classrooms.

#106 - Holy Sheets! Google Sheets Activities for all Subjects

Presenter: C ​ urts, Eric Audience: 4 ​ -12 Learning Objective: ​Participants will learn how Google Sheets can be used as a powerful tool for learning, inquiry, exploration, and inspiration in any subject area.

Google Sheets is not just a tool for crunching numbers. In this session, participants will take a look at several practical activities for a wide range of content areas including random writing prompts, flashcards, educational games, student-created learning databases, art and creativity, and of course analyzing data to draw conclusions and make predictions.

# 107 - Bringing Engineering Into Your School

Presenter: C ​ urts, Gary Audience: 9-12 Science Learning Objective: ​ Participants will learn a curricula used as a viable mechanism to implement engineering concepts and practices into their existing curriculum.

This curricula can be used for a full year Engineering course with the objective of introducing Engineering to all students or it can be used to augment or supplement existing science frameworks. There are 4 projects, each about 9 weeks to do, and we will be experiencing Project #2 on designing a "Green" building. We will be doing some actual testing (tensile strength) of some building materials in the session.

"Engineering the Future," this curricula comes from Cary Sneider out of Portland State University. Cary was the Chairperson for the Framework and NGSS committees on Engineering.

#108 - Building Empathy in the LBGT-Inclusive Classroom

Presenter: D ​ aquelente, Amanda Audience: 6 ​ -12 Learning Objective: ​ Participants will learn to Identify current strengths and weaknesses in their classroom and district bullying and anti-discrimination policies Identify appropriate LGBT-inclusive curriculum for future use.

Participants will review relevant data and best practices in LGBT-inclusive education in order to create a progressive action plan in their classroom.

#109 - Ohio’s Revised Science Standards and Model Curriculum - Changes and Implications for Science Instruction

Presenters: ​Deems, Robin and Hunter, Lydia Audience: 4 ​ -12 Science Learning Objective: ​ Participants will learn the scope of the Model Curriculum for Science and develop ways to utilize it in the classroom. Participants will also learn how to incorporate the Nature of Science into science lessons throughout the year.

The Revised Science Standards and Model Curriculum, “two plus” years in the making, finalized for implementation. ODE science consultants share what’s changed, what’s the same, when and how the assessments are affected, and why the new “Nature of Science” section can be a powerful framework for science instruction.

# 110 - Technologies Role in Transition for Youth into the Real-World Situations

Presenter: D ​ obush, Starr Audience: 4 ​ -12 Learning Objective: ​Participants will learn about and be able to select from a variety of apps that will support an inclusive world and break down barriers for work, independent living, and continued training.

Participants will focus on 10-12 apps for individuals with sensory disabilities as well as others with disabilities to give everyone a more inclusive community. Apps will assist teams and individuals have meaningful experiences when planning for their future goals in working in the community, living independently, and continue learning. Participants will use think, pair, share methods.

# 111 - The Steps to Becoming an Authentic Leader

Participant leaders or those who aspire to be leaders will learn the importance of being authentic as a school leader. Participants will learn different strategies and resources to use to challenge the status quo, in any school, at any level.

# 112 - Inspire Growth in SEL Skills through Goal-setting + Reflection

Presenters: G ​ ilbert, Colin & Backur, Brian Audience: ​4-12 Learning Objective: ​Participants will learn to implement proven protocols and practices to empower goal-setting, self-tracking, and reflection using Sown To Grow (www.sowntogrow.com), an online platform designed for students to go through steps embedded in the day-to-day learning process. It also provides teachers with data and insights to inform instructional practice.

Participants will be illuminated to proven methods in translating key SEL principles like growth mindset and student agency into impactful classroom practices. Best practices in technology-enabled student-led goal setting, progress tracking, and reflection instead of school being “done” to students, empowers students to set their own goals and learn different strategies to meet them, ultimately becoming better, more empowered learners.

# 113 - Structuring Discussions to be Equitable and Rigorous

The Framework promotes learning as a fundamentally social endeavor supported by collaborative and communicative norms. Yet, sustaining these norms requires teachers to examine and support K–12 students’ ways of talking so they all are able to articulate, make sense of, and evaluate each other’s ideas.

Presenters: G ​ orse, Thomas & Gowdy, Amanda Audience: ​4-12 Learning Objective: ​Participants will learn how to create an account with Edcite and effectively search for online assessments and build a question bank.

A brief overview of what Edcite and how it can be used to help prepare for Ohio’s AIR Exams. We will be demonstrating how the website works, how to review the data that is collected, making questions, and building assessments.

Participants will receive an overview of PBS LearningMedia™, the PBS digital library that provides educators instant access to thousands of classroom-ready, curriculum-targeted digital resources including videos, interactives, audio, photos, and in-depth lesson plans. PBS LearningMedia builds on the strength of public media and is designed to improve teacher effectiveness and student achievement with resources that are aligned to Common Core and national standards. Participants will learn to search for resources and share resources with colleagues.

#116 - ** Double Session 1 & 2** Language Acquisition: Research-Based Strategies for Building Vocabulary

Discover why building all levels of students' vocabulary early is crucial to their future success as readers and writers. Learn what kinds of vocabulary you should focus on indirect instruction and how to ensure your learners' success in acquiring and retaining reading, writing, listening, and speaking vocabulary words. Bernadette demonstrates how to interact with whole-group, small-group, and individual lessons, games, and application activities that encourage language development in every level and type of learner.

# 117 - Increasing End of Course exam scores using Edcite

Presenter: L ​ ee, Joslin Audience: ​9-12 Learning Objective: ​Participants will​ l​ earn how to create computer-generated assessments using edcite that align with state standards and gather data on assessments to target areas of need.

Participants will learn how to use edcite as a tool to create online assessments that mirror Ohio’s end of course exams. Participants will learn how to create their own questions and assignments using the State test blueprint and released test questions for your subject area, search for existing tests stored on Edcite and grade and utilize data reports to inform instruction.

# 118- More Learning, Less Memorizing: Vocabulary Activities

Presenter: M ​ artin, Susan Audience: ​4-12 Learning Objective: ​ Participants will learn how to create stations or activities appropriate for student grade level and content, and learn how to combine apps for a blended learning approach to vocabulary acquisition.

Participants will use Google for Education apps and other basic tech tools (Flippity, Vocaroo, Flipgrid, Quizlet, etc.) to create easy learning activities & stations for vocab acquisition. Level these activities for your students and your content. Plan once for go-to lessons all year!

# 119 - Updates from ODE and Overview of the New Standards and Model Curriculum

Presenter: M ​ cKean, Linda Audience: ​4-12 Social Studies Learning Objective: ​Participants will learn about the latest updates from ODE and will review changes in the standards and model curriculum to make appropriate shifts in content delivery.

# 120 - Students Working Collaboratively in Mathematics (Grade 6-12)

Presenter: M ​ oore, Annika Audience: ​6-12 Math Learning Objective: ​Participants will learn the benefits of student-led discussion of mathematical concepts. Session developed from The Mathematics Assessment Project.

Participants will learn that research has shown that cooperative small group work has positive effects on learning, but that this is dependent on the existence of shared goals for the group and individual accountability for the attainment of these goals. Additionally, collaboration has a positive effect on social skills and self-esteem (Askew & William, 1995). If students are to make sense of mathematical concepts, then they will need opportunities to share, discuss and work together.

# 121 - Nyzen's Top 10 Tools Used in the Science Classroom and more

Presenter: N ​ yzen, Kelly Audience: ​4-8 Science Learning Objective: ​Participants will learn about the tools used in the high school science classroom but could be incorporated in other grade levels and content areas. Participants will be able to play with and ask questions about the new tools.

Participants join Kelly as she will highlight her Top 10 tools used in her science classroom. All tools can be utilized in other content areas and grade levels.

# 122 - Nearpod + Flocabulary: Engaging All Learners

Presenter: P ​ ecoulas, Katie Audience: ​4-12 Learning Objective: ​Participants will learn how to implement Nearpod into instruction and will have clear ways that this tool can be used.

In this session, we will review how Nearpod and Flocabulary can be implemented in the classroom to engage all learners. In addition to reviewing the interactive features of the platform, we will dive into the supporting curriculum resources that can further drive engagement in the classroom.

# 123- SEL: Engaging Students in Meaningful Conversations Using Newsela

Presenters: P ​ ersico, Jenna & Bochiccio-Beaver, Lauren Audience: ​4-12 Learning Objective: ​Participants will learn how to incorporate nonfiction reading into Social Emotional Learning curriculum. Participants will be able to engage in meaningful conversations around SEL and turnkey those conversations to the classroom.

When thinking about being Future Ready, we know students need well-rounded content, foundational knowledge and skills, and the ability to regularly engage with challenging and timely issues. What if teachers were able to tackle such initiatives while weaving Social and Emotional Learning into the conversation? # 124 - Mathematically Model Real-World Data with Social Implications and Integrate Technology

Presenter: R ​ eardon, Tom Audience: ​9-12 Math Learning Objective: ​Participants will learn how to model current real-world data with graphing technologies. These types of activities will make teachers and their students more aware of important social issues.

Analyze, model, and interpret actual data and create social awareness for important current issues. Use modeling equations to interpolate, extrapolate, calculate percent increase/decrease, interpret the data and its consequences, and more. Issues to investigate include Payday Loan Companies, Plastic Straw pollution, and Climate Change. Graphing calculators are provided but participants can use any graphing technology.

# 125 - Prioritizing SEL for a Brighter Future

Presenter: S ​ add, Wendy Audience: ​4-12 Learning Objective: ​Participants will gain a deeper understanding of the SEL competencies and explore the reciprocal relationship between academics and SEL. In July 2015, the Journal of Public Health published a study that linked children’s social emotional competencies with college and career success. Deepen your understanding of these SEL competencies and explore teaching practices that support the development of the competencies to best prepare students for their futures.

When is the last time something amazing happened in your school? How many people knew about it? The work done in schools all across the globe is spectacular. Telling the real story of schools helps create a narrative that builds culture and gives everyone in your community an identity. Utilizing social media and empowering those around you to be the storytellers of your district is a great way to celebrate the success of students with parents and the community. # 127 - SAT Suite of Assessments: A Closer Look at the assessments and how they can inform instruction

This session will provide information on the new policies and options including Unlimited SAT Score Sends for fee waiver eligible students, how to offer the SAT School Day in your building, and the free instructional support provided to students and teachers.

# 128 - College Credit Plus: A Review of the Underperforming Student Rule

We will review the current policy regarding underperforming students in the College Credit Plus program, including the school's responsibilities. Example forms will be provided that schools can tailor to fit their needs.

# 130 - The World Is My Audience

Presenter: S ​ mith, Jon Audience: ​4-12 Learning Objective: ​Participants will learn the power of publishing student work for a global audience.

Participants will learn the features of Book Creator and how to integrate them into their classrooms.

I struggled with getting my students to invest time and effort in creative writing. I tried hundreds of journal prompts and writing activities but nothing worked. Then, a simple idea had a profound impact on my classroom.

I realized that students are significantly more motivated when they know the content they create will reach a global audience. Rather than create a piece of homework for the teacher to mark and maybe sit on the fridge at home, they were authoring media-rich digital books for the world to see!

In this engaging and interactive session, you will hear Jon’s story and learn about how publishing had a transformative effect on the engagement of his students and the quality of their work. You will also learn Book Creator’s features, discuss how it can create a student-centered environment in your classroom and write/publish a collaborative book together.

# 131 - Creating Rubrics for Hard to Measure Skills

Presenter: S ​ tanley, Todd Audience: ​4-8 Learning Objective: ​Participants will learn the benefits of using rubrics, including the evaluation of performance-based assessment that allows students to demonstrate skills as well as content.

Rubrics are a valuable way for teachers to assess students in non-traditional, performance-based assessments, many of which require students to employ 21st-century skills. The argument some people make against rubrics is that they are often subjective because they are based on the teacher’s opinion rather than an objective multiple-choice question with a single correct answer. But what if you could create rubrics that are objective, evaluating students on a consistent basis? And what if you could create rubrics that are tailor-made to the skills students will be demonstrating in the performance-assessment?

This session will show you how to create objective rubrics that can be used to evaluate student performance. This way the rubrics you use to evaluate students will be specific to their understanding, rather than a general one that does not always apply, or leaves too much room for subjectivity.

# 132 - BRAVE: Building Rigorous Academic Vocabulary Essentials

Presenter: S ​ tock, Kimberly Audience: ​4-12 Learning Objective: ​Participants will learn strategies for instructional practices that make vocabulary development a focal point across content-areas in the classroom and acquire strategies to enhance students’ ability with increasingly complex vocabulary.

General academic and domain-specific vocabulary are essential components of comprehension development. Academic vocabulary is critical to understanding the concepts of the content taught in all curricular areas, and it is one of the strongest indicators of how well students will learn across disciplines.

This session will investigate and delineate the steps to ensure students have the appropriate academic background knowledge to understand the vocabulary they will encounter in multiple domains by providing them with direct instruction.

# 133 - The Power of Authentic Assessments

Presenter: S ​ uskey, Ryan Audience: ​4-12 Social Studies Learning Objective: ​Participants will learn how to describe the three criteria of Authentic Intellectual Work (AIW) Join the Ohio Center for Law-Related Education to explore how authentic assessments can increase the rigor and engagement of your social studies curricula. By working through the components of Authentic Intellectual Work (AIW), and demonstrating several pre-made models, teachers will learn to go beyond the paper-pencil test and push their students to deeper mastery.

# 134 - The Dog Didn't Eat My Homework: Technology to Support Executive Function

Presenter: S ​ zakacs, Wendy Audience: ​4-12 Learning Objective: ​Participants will learn familiarity with the types of executive functions and identify technology supports for students with executive functioning challenges.

Learn what skills to teach that will support positive behaviors and enable lifelong proficiency for success.

This session will give a brief summary of executive functions, including how to assess and teach those skills. Many tools will be shared in the areas of self-management, time management, information management, and materials management.

# 421 - Mathematically Model Real-World Data with Social Implications and Integrate Technology

Analyze, model, and interpret actual data and create social awareness for important current issues. Use modeling equations to interpolate, extrapolate, calculate percent increase/decrease, interpret the data and its consequences, and more. Issues to investigate include Payday Loan Companies, Plastic Straw pollution, and Climate Change. Graphing calculators are provided but participants can use any graphing technology.

The session looks at case-based learning and how it can be used to create an authentic classroom where students look at real-world problems. This falls under the umbrella of inquiry learning which is perfect for students because it allows them to be curious and explore their thoughts and ideas.

Discussing controversial issues is one of the Six Proven Practices for Civic Learning. But, the thought of controversy in the classroom strikes fear in many teachers’ hearts! This session will teach a systematic approach to introducing and managing controversial issues in the K-12 classrooms, including overviews of popular discussion formats and research on "best practices”.

Participants will learn how to set up a class, roster and manage students, navigate to the most important parts of the Khan Academy website, and how to assign content to students. Participants will also learn about Khan's mastery system and how it can help students master content.
