Administrators, school counselors and literacy coaches gathered at the TCESC to prepare for House Bill 436, Ohio’s Dyslexia Law. The legislation will require public schools to administer annual dyslexia training beginning in the 2022-2023 school year for students in grades K-3.

Students in kindergarten will be administered dyslexia screening for each school year thereafter. Students in 1st through 6th grade will be screened upon the request of a student's parent or guardian or a teacher's request with permission from the parent or guardian.

Districts will be required to have a structured literacy certification process for teachers providing instruction in grades K-3.

In January, nearly one hundred Youngstown State University teacher candidates gathered at the TCESC. The future educators went through seminars in classroom teaching strategies, technology, and collaboration ideas on ways to connect with their prospective students. They received their required child abuse and neglect training during the second half of their day.

Dr. Reeves is the author of 40 books and more than 100 articles on leadership and education and has worked in more than 50 states and 40 countries.

Internationally recognized educational leader Dr. Douglas Reeves returned to Trumbull County to continue his work with Trumbull County educational leaders. Reeves focused on national perspectives in educational improvement. Reeves will be returning to work with Trumbull County educators moving forward in 2022.

Superintendents and Trumbull County school board members came together at the ESC for a leadership workshop on Thursday, January 27. Attorney Megan Bair addressed the group with leadership tools and processes they will work through as school board members.

"Now, more than ever, public education is in need of great leadership and board governance. During these challenging times, it is critical that school board members have a clear understanding of their roles and responsibilities so that boards of education and school leadership are successful in working together to navigate the unique challenges facing public education today. This workshop addressed the role and responsibilities of a school board member; Ohio Sunshine Laws, including board meetings, executive sessions, and public records; public participation; and Ohio ethics law."

TCESC Spelling Bee In February, the Trumbull County Educational Service Center and the Youngstown Warren Regional Chamber of Commerce hosted our annual spelling bee.

Thirty students participated in the spell off tournament; each won their respective spelling bee at their school.

The tournament was utilized as a practice for the upcoming regional tournament consisting of spellers from Mahoning and Trumbull counties.

Daniel Naddour from Warren John F. Kennedy was the tournament champion after correctly spelling “granulation” in the 4th round.

OMEA District V Honors Jazz Band

In January, the Ohio Music Education Association (OMEA) hosted the inaugural District V Honors Jazz Festival at the Deyor Performing Arts Center. The event hosted ensembles from Trumbull, Mahoning, and Ashtabula counties. Trumbull County had 18 students represented from Howland, Lakeview, Liberty, Niles, and Warren.

The Ohio Music Education Association is the third largest of the 52 federated state affiliates of NAfME, The National Association for Music Education. OMEA members are involved at all levels of music education, serving more than 1.8 million public school students in 612 public school districts and 51 colleges and universities in Ohio.

Trumbull County Prep Bowl 2022

Over 50 teams from Trumbull County schools put their knowledge to the test, answering questions in many subjects, including mathematics, literature, science, pop culture, and much more.

In January, Members of the Trumbull Retired Teachers Association (TRTA) awarded two $500 grants to two local teachers for their efforts to support innovative activities in their classrooms and beyond.

The grant money will help educational opportunities grow, literally, for Champion Local Schools students. Fifth-grade science teacher Dave Murduck plans to use the $500 grant to enhance the outdoor science lab and garden on district grounds. The idea for the outdoor space came from Champion students themselves when the district was planning to construct their new K-8 facility. Murduck has worked with school administrators and the Champion community to help make their vision a reality. Currently, the outdoor space hosts garden boxes where students have planted various crops and include an outdoor pavilion, powered by solar panels, is taking shape. The partially enclosed area will provide space for hands-on learning and the utilization of technology.

In Hubbard, the $500 grant will help build the relationship between the elementary and high school art programs. Students in Art 2, 3, and 4 courses at Hubbard High School recently illustrated a 26-page coloring book for students in elementary school. The artwork inside the coloring book was based on an assignment requiring students to select a known piece of art and incorporate an animal into the work. Thanks to the $500 TRTA grant, art teacher Josh MacMillan will now be able to print copies of the coloring book for the 30 high school students who helped to illustrate it and all 265 students in the third-fourth grades.

Through this grant-funded project, Hubbard Schools can help bridge the art curriculum in the elementary grades to the high school programs by introducing secondary curriculum to third and fourthgrade students as they progress into middle school art.

This is the second year of the TRTA grant program, which is open to all academic disciplines, grade levels, and building activities. This summer, Murduck and MacMillan will be recognized at a TRTA meeting and showcase how they used their grants to all members of TRTA.

“This connection will give our young students the hope that their interest in art will continue throughout their school career as well as encourage them to take artrelated course work when they arrive in high school,” said Josh MacMillan.

DEPARTMENT Speech Department Eighteen speech-language pathologists make up the TCESC Speech Department. Outside of the local classrooms, the department also works with multiple universities to give graduate students school experiences (Thiel College, Kent State University, University of Akron).

Melanie Shipman is currently in her 2nd year supervising the Speech Department and has also been the Psychology Department supervisor for the past three years. Before coming to the ESC, Melanie was a middle school math teacher for ten years. Melanie received her master's degree in school psychology and has served as a school psychologist since 2015.

SPOTLIGHT A Speech-Language Pathologist addresses language disabilities, including vocabulary, grammar, and socialization; articulation disorders; dysfluency; voice disorders; oral-motor functioning; auditory memory and processing; hearing impairments; and assistive technology and augmentative communication devices.

Tracy Lewis has been a Speech Pathologist with the TCESC for 18 years. Recently Tracy transitioned from serving one district to multiple locations, including a TCESC preschool classroom, several itinerant preschool locations, and a district. “No matter what location, I view my role as one that is to assist that child in feeling successful during our time together. It has been refreshing to return to working with young children.” Tracy enjoys keeping the kids engaged through the use of interactive notebooks, “I use interactive notebooks to attach worksheet activities that highlight what was successfully practiced in therapy, student work samples, and parent notes.”

"The gift in working with school-age children is in watching their growth and success in communicating with others socially or expressing themselves in the best way possible in the classroom," Tracy Lewis.

Trumbull County high school students from Brookfield, Hubbard, Labrae, Weathersfield, and TCTC put their engineering skills to the test in the 14th annual Mahoning Valley Miniature Bridge Building Competition. This event hosts schools from Mahoning and Trumbull Counties. It promotes civil engineering as a career choice while providing our valley’s students the opportunity to apply their knowledge to a real-world application.

The event involved designing and constructing a balsa wood bridge followed by load testing until failure. Schools were judged by the design and the most efficient load-carrying capacity to structure weight ratio. TCTC’s bridge won the most aesthetically pleasing award for its design
