TCESC awarded Innovative Workforce Incentive Grant The TCESC was recently awarded the Innovative Workforce Incentive Grant in the amount of $283,650 to establish an additional industry-recognized credential program. TCESC plans to offer the Ohio State Apprenticeship Council Recognized Pre-Apprenticeship Program within the Apprenticeship and Journeyman career field.

"Through this grant, the Career Connections Pre-Apprenticeship program will provide participating students with a tangible, meaningful, and translatable skillset," James Rook, C&I Supervisor. With the support of an approved articulation agreement through the Ohio State Apprenticeship Council (OSAC) and upon completion of the two-year Career Connections PreApprenticeship Program, each student will be eligible to receive a 12-point industry-recognized credential that gains them direct admission into an apprenticeship program along with apprenticeship placement services with the support of the Ohio Carpenters Joint Apprenticeship and Training Program.

Specifically, students will gain essential building trades experience while they complete a state-recognized preapprenticeship program using the Career Connections curriculum, which includes instruction in the areas of building trades, mathematics, employability skills, and project-based learning. The Career Connections curriculum has been approved and adopted by the Ohio Carpenters JATC Apprenticeship Program.

TCESC LIFTS OFF

The Trumbull County Educational Service Center is hitting the skies with drones in collaboration with the Pittsburgh Institute of Aeronautics. In November, the newly formed Trumbull County Drone Racing League (TCDRL) received a $600 donation from Joseph DeRamo, PIA Youngstown Campus Director. The funds will go toward purchasing equipment and drones for the local school districts that are participating. This partnership will allow access to facilities at PIA and Winner aviation for high-flying tournaments. The TCDRL will be a member of the national Drones in Schools program. This will give the students here in Trumbull County an opportunity to earn points and soar on a national level. “It’s something different and interesting for students. There are so many things kids can do with drones now and it’s a new way to get kids involved,” Ed Mackiewicz, Classroom Technology Supervisor. Currently, Labrae, McDonald, Southington, Joseph Badger, and Brookfield are a part of the TCDRL, which is set to lift off for the inaugural season this February.

Helping Those in Need

Students from the Trumbull County Educational Service Center's Vocational Unit, housed at McDonald High School, sort, examine and organize clothes at the Warren Family Mission as part of their job training/workforce preparation program. Students in the unit will be assisting the mission staff on a regular basis. They have also worked for the City of Niles, cleaning the grounds at the Niles Wellness Center and Niles Cemetery, washing the city's emergency vehicles, and painting at SCOPE among other activities and responsibilities. The program was launched this year through a partnership with Niles Mayor Steve Mientkiewcz and is expanding with its new partnership with the Warren Family Mission and other efforts.

Teamwork: MVMC & Trumbull County Educators The Mahoning Valley Manufacturers Coalition hosted its first meeting with numerous superintendents from Trumbull County. Their newlyformed partnership aims at building productive education and industry collaborations for the betterment of Trumbull County students.

If you look at our website there are a lot of opportunities, a lot are in the trades. The reach the MVMC is making has been helping us get involved. From where we stand, it’s easy to work with the university's, but it has become more important, to begin with, the high school level,” Megan Natale Director of Continuous Improvement.

Leopard Caring Closet Clothes are hitting the shelves and hangers for the first time this school year in the new “Leopard Caring Closet” at Liberty Local Schools. The closet, consisting of donated, new and gently used clothing, has created a way teachers and staff members to anonymously get an article of clothing for a student. The closet is run by TCESC students with multiple disabilities. This provides the students in the MD classroom with real-life work experiences by handling orders, sorting and folding clothes, and delivering the items to the classrooms.

"It gives outsiders a different perspective of what goes on in this room. We do classroom activities but also teach about life skills outside of the classroom,” - Christian Denning, Intervention Specialist. Adele McCorkle is finding a specific clothing size.

The Leopard Caring Closet is made possible by generous donors such as Superintendent Dr. Tommelleo, and numerous organizations such as Making Kids Count and The Girard Rotary Club. The closet continues to operate thanks to the kindness of the Liberty community.

Outstanding Leadership Award for Community Service "His dedication stretched outside the normal school day, taking phone calls at all hours to offer clarification or assist in a specific situation in a district. He has orchestrated and published informational documents for schools and families to handle Covid-19 related issues and concerns. The Trumbull County Educational Service Center was proud to present the Ohio ESC Outstanding Leadership Award for Community Service to Frank Migliozzi. Migliozzi is the commissioner of the Trumbull County Combined Health District, and has been the backbone in supporting the health and wellbeing of students and staff in our schools throughout Trumbull County. Throughout the COVID-19 pandemic, Migliozzi has held weekly, individual meetings with superintendents and school nurses breaking down informative measures from the Ohio Department of Health and the CDC.

Reading to Play!

Brookfield Elementary School students read their way to a brand new playground! During the month of October, all students participated in a Read-A-Thon event designed to foster a love of reading and raise money to renovate the playground. When the event was all said and done, students read 100,050 minutes and raised $21,865 - which was more than 200% of their original goal. The district is matching the funds raised and all money will go toward renovating the playground and replacing gym equipment.

Department Multiple Disabilities (MD) Michelle Tul, Supervisor of the Multiple Disabilities Program, has been a staple of the MD program for 32 years. Spending 25 working in the classroom and now the last seven as the department supervisor, Tul oversees 25 classrooms around Trumbull County.

In 1984, she attended Youngstown State University for Psychology. "I had a psychology of education class and was assigned to Leonard Kirtz, a Mahoning County MRDD school. I decided that was my calling from the minute I walked into the school. I have never regretted that decision and continue to have a passion for working with my students and their families."

"My partner, Carrie Earls, who is our MD Coordinator handles many of the meetings and IEP and ETR documents, supporting our MD staff and ensuring compliance for the districts we serve. She also works with me on unique issues that arise or how to best serve our students/meet their individual needs." 9

Highlight The ESC oversees multiple disabilities classrooms in Liberty, McDonald, Fairhaven, Niles, Joseph Badger, LaBrae, Champion, Girard, Howland and TCTC with approximately 230 students.

The unit works with a wide range of students with multiple disabilities, intellectual disabilities, autism, traumatic brain injury, and other health impairments. These students range in age from kindergarten through option 23.

"The MD teachers go above and beyond to meet their students' unique needs, academically, emotionally, and behaviorally. They work with their classroom staff to provide a classroom that promotes respect. They find ways to acquire materials to enhance their classroom through crowdfunding. They work together with our school psychologist to create behavior plans and implement them. They attend professional development regularly to keep updated on the latest instruction practices and trends as well as current on our curriculum." - Michelle Tul, Supervisor of Multiple Disabilities

Department Occupational/Physical Therapy Susan Shutrump has served as the Supervisor of Occupational & Physical Therapy at TCESC since the inception of the program in 1983. Prior to coming to TCESC, she studied at Utica College of Syracuse graduating in 1980.

The Occupational and Physical Therapy departments service all 20 Trumbull County school districts. Currently, there are 1041 OT students and 160 PT students within the programs with grades ranging from PREK through 12th.

Highlight "Jennifer Reed’s extensive expertise along with her innovative team spirit has long been recognized by district staff. As an Occupational Therapy Assistant, she observed a continuing trend in both the general and special education population. She implemented a Sensory Walk in the Niles Primary Building as a way to provide students with targeted sensory input during naturally occurring transitions," Susan Shutrump

Occupational Therapists, Occupational Therapy Assistants, and Physical Therapists play a vital role in assisting students with disabilities in accessing their education across all educational settings. From within the building to other classroom extensions, including worksites, the playground, and the school bus, OT/PT staff support students in becoming as independent as possible while developing daily living skills necessary to meet their maximum educational potential.

Twenty Under The program in its 9th year recognizes individuals under 20 for their leadership skills through volunteerism, extracurricular activities, and academic achievements.

Feeding Our Families

In November, Dick's Sporting Goods donated three Thanksgiving day meals to the TCESC. The donations fed families from our ED and MD units. Thank you Dick's Sporting Good for your continued support of our Trumbull County students.

Flashes Athletic Director Honored Champion High School Athletic Director Tim Cope has been named the Northeast District Athletic Administrator of the Year by the Ohio Interscholastic Athletic Administration Association (OIAAA). Nominated by his peers in the OIAAA Northeast Region, Cope received the award at the 2021 OIAAA Fall State Conference on November 15, 2021.

Lordstown Elementary Deploys #AnthonysArmy In Support of 3rd-Grader With Cancer

Students and staff lined up outside Lordstown Elementary School to show their support for a 3rd-grader who is battling cancer.

They held signs and cheered for Anthony as he rode in front of the school in his mother Sheila Carmella’s car. The drive-thru was led by Village police and fire personnel. Anthony's face lit up when he saw the #AnthonysArmy teachers many wore the shirts that were designed by his school principal, Rich Zigarovich, and the TCESC Public Relations Department. Anthony was diagnosed in April with a stage 4 Wilms tumor, which is a childhood cancer that starts in the kidneys. He has already had two major surgeries, radiation treatment and was released in November, on his birthday and just before the parade in his honor was held. The school launched the effort to support Anthony early in the school year.

LaBrae student uses 3-D printing skills to to create create medical medical device device for for kindergartener kindergartener

When LaBrae senior Aidan McManus heard kindergartener Emerson Masters needed a new screen for her insulin pump, he put the skills he learned on his school district's robotics team to work. Aidan 3-D printed a new protective case for 5-year old Emerson. Emerson, who has type 1 diabetes, had broken the screen on her insulin pump twice within one month. Aidan used his own insulin pump to develop a design for Emerson’s case, and, after printing a few prototypes, presented her with a pink case with her name on it. Aidan’s and Emerson's story has garnered attention throughout the LaBrae community and beyond. "I love it," Emerson exclaimed. For his part, Aidan said he was glad to be able to use his 3-D printing skills to help. "This is something she really needs for her health and quality of life," Aidan said. "It's important to her, and I'm glad I was able to do this for her."
