2020 Summer of Growth

Summer of Growth 2020

TCESC is offering a series of virtual workshops in two formats. Online Schoology workshops on pages 3-15 will require participants to attend an initial 30 minute virtual meeting and then work through Schoology modules at their own pace. For the synchronous workshops on pages 16-19, participants must attend all scheduled virtual meetings. Contact hours and college credits will be available with these professional learning opportunities.

Each Ashland graduate workshop credit requires a total of 12.5 contact hours and additional assignment work.

All workshops are FREE to employees from the following aligned districts: Bloomfield-Mespo, Bristol, Champion, Girard, Howland, Hubbard, Joseph Badger, LaBrae, Lakeview, Liberty, Lordstown, Maplewood, Mathews, McDonald, Newton Falls, Niles, Southington, TCESC, and Weathersfield.

For all other participants, there is a $50 fee for each 6.25 contact hours acquired. Check with your administration on district procedures regarding payment.

TCESC Registration Information ● Register for all workshops through the online ​TCESC registration system​. Registration will be open from ​May 11, 2020 to June 1, 2020​.​ If you do not have a TCESC account, you will need to create one. No telephone or email registrations will be accepted.

Registration is online only. ● You will receive an email confirming your registration. ● You will receive contact hours for online workshops through the TCESC registration system at the completion of each workshop if you are NOT taking it for graduate credit. Ashland University Registration Information Obtaining College Credit ● Contact hours are NOT available if you take graduate credit. Participants ​in this ​ ​workshop ​should be comfortable using Google, but want to explore ways to leverage it for greater classroom technology integration. Advanced uses of Gmail, Drive, Docs, Slides, Sites, Forms, Sheets, and Classroom will be addressed. Additionally, Chrome Extensions, Advanced Search, YouTube, and Maps will be part of the workshop. This training will assist in preparation for the Google Certified Educator Level 2 assessment.

Designing Novels Units for Remote Learning

This course will offer you the opportunity to design instructional units for novels with standards-based instruction that can be delivered remotely. Participants will find on-line electronic databases for eBooks and digital texts to be shared with their students, build slideshow presentations, establish student collaboration through shared documents, & assess student learning through weekly posted assignment choice boards. This course is best if you currently teach ELA using novels. The final piece will consist of sharing your artifacts with your colleagues in a virtual meeting.

This course will allow you to develop writing tasks for students that utilize templates and sentence starters for them to develop their expression more fully. Participants will develop writing prompts, graphic organizers, and rubrics for utilization with student writing tasks derived from inquiry and research, intended to be delivered remotely. This course is designed with the reluctant student writer in mind and could be adapted for disciplinary literacy. Participants will use their district G Suite to access Google Applied Skills content. The final piece will consist of sharing your artifacts with your colleagues in a virtual meeting.

Trauma- Informed Care

This remote training will be provided by Educational Consultant, William Van Cleave. Developing vocabulary builds better readers and writers. Morphology–or the study of word parts for meaning–is a best practices strategy that can impact students’ vocabulary across the disciplines. In this interactive workshop participants across the disciplines learn about the importance of morphological instruction, explore elements of a good morphology-based lesson, consider ways to integrate this study of bases and affixes into other content instruction, and spend considerable time investigating words so that they can better arm students with the tools necessary to advance their skills. Participants leave this workshop with an approach and strategies they can implement with their students the next day.

In this 3-session workshop, we will explore different strategies for scaffolding reading, writing, listening, and speaking for English Learners. Attendees will use their own lesson plans and activities to learn how to identify the specific language students need to carry out academic tasks, and practice modifying their scaffolding of tasks for different levels of English proficiency. Syntax Intensives

This remote training will be provided by Educational Consultant, William Van Cleave. Far too often in instruction, classes move directly to practice with prompts, asking students to assimilate writing skills that have yet to be developed. In this hands-on, interactive workshop participants learn the value of syntax instruction as well as a suite of best practices techniques to develop a deep understanding of syntax in their students. Participants work with the function of words and clauses, which form the building blocks of sentences. They recognize that this impacts both writing and reading comprehension. They leave this workshop with an approach and strategies they can implement with their students the next day.
