EDITOR’S NOTE

PUBLISHERS Richard Johns Dana Johns

It is exciting to know that by the time you are reading the October issue of Cleaner Times (CT), PowerClean 2026 will be right around the corner for members of the Cleaning Equipment Trade Association (CETA). The Rosen Shingle Creek Hotel in Orlando, Florida, will host the face-to-face meeting from October 8–11. There will be great speakers, beneficial educational content, new products, good food, nice weather, a golf outing, Women of CETA, and plenty of opportunities to catch up with colleagues and friends in person. On page 12 readers can see “The 2026 Professional Pressure Washing Chemical, Equipment, and Accessory Showcase.” The first section is divided into What’s New and What’s Next. Companies provide new equipment they are working on or revising as well as an upcoming piece of equipment, chemical, or accessory. The second part is a Product Showcase where companies show off pressure washing equipment, chemicals, or accessories that those who walk the trade show floor will be able to see in Orlando. Turn to page 30 to read about the 55th anniversary and the last five years as Mi-T-M has prospered under an employee stock ownership plan (ESOP). On page 34 Diane Calabrese shares, “The eight CETA Scholars for 2026–2027 are introduced here. Their interests and courses of study are as varied as the world’s cultures, and that’s a great thing.” It’s an encouraging read. And take time to flip to page 42 to read about R.W. Beckett’s “Vision for the Future of Combustion Technology.” This continues to be reinforced by their acquisition of a family of companies, with the most recent being Wayne Combustion Systems. We hope you have a great fall season, and Cleaner Times can’t wait to see you in October in Orlando.

REMEMBERING

ROY

A Legacy of Service to CETA and the Pressure Cleaning Industry by Richard Johns, Cleaner Times

6 • October 2026 • Cleaner Times

I

n the September issue we shared the obituary of Roy Chappell, founder of Chappell Supply in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma. This month we want to remember Roy for the impact he made on the pressure cleaning industry and for his many years of service to an organization he cared deeply about and invested so much of himself in, the Cleaning Equipment Trade Association (CETA). In every profession certain individuals come along who leave a lasting impact. In sports, it may be an outstanding athlete; in entertainment, an exceptional actor or singer; in politics, a leader who is able to bring people together during a critical time. The military has also produced leaders remembered for generations because of the influence they had on others. Roy made that kind of impact on the pressure cleaning industry. Charlene Yarbrough, founder and publisher of Cleaner Times, had this to say about Roy. “The thing I have always liked about Roy is that he had such a desire to see the pressure washing industry grow. He saw things on a grand scale, not just locally but nationwide. He was kind and

caring and willing to assist and advise those who needed help personally and professionally. Mostly, though, he was my friend. Even years after I retired, Roy would call to check on me, even while he was dealing with his own illness. He was a good man.” Several of Roy’s friends spoke at his funeral service, sharing stories that reflected the kind of man he was. They praised his friendship, recalled memorable stories he loved to tell, and laughed about the practical jokes he often played on his close friends. They also spoke about Roy’s humble upbringing in Missouri and the entrepreneurial drive he developed at an early age, qualities passed down from his father. Roy was willing to invest in himself, work hard, and take chances. By the age of 18, before graduating from high school, he had already purchased a farm and accumulated a sizable herd of cattle. That drive and determination stayed with him throughout his life. One speaker recalled how Roy began Chappell Supply by selling products from the trunk of his car. Beginning with just $250.00 worth of inventory in 1980, Roy grew the business into one of the industry’s leading organizations specializing in industrial cleaning equipment, chemicals, hose manufacturing and assembly, and water treatment. Roy’s story was one of humble beginnings, hard work, entrepreneurship, and a willingness to build something from the ground up, traits that defined both his business career and the life he shared with those around him. Roy was much more than a successful business owner and industry supplier. He was an active participant, a leader, and someone who believed strongly in giving back to the industry that had been such an important part of his life. Roy was instrumental in the growth and development of CETA, an organization that has played a vital role in moving the pressure cleaning industry forward by bringing together all segments of the industry to promote professionalism, education, safety, and responsible practices. Over the years, Roy served CETA in numerous leadership capacities: • CETA President—2004 and 2011 • CETA Board of Directors—1995, 1999, 2003, 2004, 2009, and 2011 • Board of Trustees—1996 (as a member of the first board of trustees) and again from 2013 to 2020. Roy was also a tremendous supporter of the CETA Scholarship Foundation (formerly the CETA Education Foundation), https://ceta. org/scholarship-foundation, and played an Cleaner Times • October 2026 • 7

important role in its growth and success. Alongside other dedicated supporters of the Foundation, he helped build a lasting commitment to education within the industry. As of March 2026, the Foundation’s endowment fund had grown to more than $377,000 of its $500,000 goal, helping ensure that its educational initiatives and scholarship programs can continue for years to come. We asked Terry Murray, co-owner and vice president of Etowah Chemical Sales and Service in Gadsden, Alabama, to share his thoughts and memories of Roy. He offered the following reflections: Roy Chappell was more than a great friend. He was one of those special people who could walk into a room and talk to anyone. It didn’t matter who you were or where you came from; Roy had a way of making you feel welcome, valued, and part of the family. Roy loved this industry, but most of all he loved the people in it. He understood that the heart of this industry wasn’t just the equipment, the businesses, or the numbers. It was about the relationships and friendships and the people who showed up for one another year after year. One of the things I will always remember about Roy was his generosity, especially when it came to children. At PowerClean his stuffedanimal giveaways became something everyone looked forward to each year. He also believed in giving young people opportunities, including sponsoring scholarships for CETA members. Giving back wasn’t something Roy simply talked about; it was something he lived. And then there was Roy the prankster. We pulled pranks on each other right up until the end. I can still picture that twinkle in his eye when he knew he had just pulled one over on me. That mischievous smile told you everything. Roy loved to laugh, and he made sure those around him laughed too. Roy will always be remembered throughout this industry for his 8 • October 2026 • Cleaner Times

knowledge, his generosity, his sense of humor, and, most importantly, his heart. He gave so much to the industry he loved, but his greatest gift was the way he made people feel. I am grateful that I had the opportunity to call Roy my friend. I will miss his laughter, his wisdom, his generosity, and especially that twinkle in his eye. Roy left his mark on this industry and on so many of us. His legacy will live on in the people he helped, the children he brought joy to, the scholarships he supported, the friendships he made, and the countless memories he left behind. He was truly one of a kind, and he will never be forgotten. Gregg Brodsky of Alkota Cleaning Systems, a longtime friend and business colleague, also shared his thoughts about Roy: “Words”—our only human way of trying to communicate feelings. Emotions are conscious and instant, but feelings are embedded in our minds permanently as a conscious

thought and personal meaning. It becomes clear that for a very rare personality such as Roy’s, actions in life speak volumes that words will never seem to adequately explain. We will miss the earthly body that carried the very essence of Roy’s being—his laughter and smile he used as his personal commitment to the meaning of life and how to live, the love that he shared effortlessly

and openly, the support he offered without being asked, and the wisdom and vision he practiced with every breath, unknowingly and willfully sharing with every soul he touched. Our little industry is so blessed that our Creator, through Roy, chose us as the nucleus of his earthly mission. The life-altering influences are too numerous to list, but his passion for learning and sharing continues

through the CETA Education Foundation. Roy Chappell was one of the founding fathers, and his dream and personal passion continue to spread every day. Our sincere friend Roy Gene Chappell will surely be missed in a physical sense, but the massive vortex of his spirit lives in eternity.” It is hard to imagine what CETA— and, in many ways, the pressure cleaning industry itself—would be like without the impact Roy had over so many years. Although Roy is no longer with us, his legacy lives on through his family, the business he started, the organization he helped strengthen, and the countless people who had the opportunity to know and work alongside him. I believe I can speak for many throughout this industry when I say that Roy Chappell will always be remembered, not simply for what he accomplished but for the friendships he built, the knowledge he shared, the people he encouraged, and the lasting difference he made in an industry he truly loved. Centurion HX 8.0 Rotating Nozzle www.barens.com orders@barens.com | 800-676-0607

While Annovi Reverberi continues to advance industrial pump technology, that same engineering expertise is helping shape the future of professional cleaning equipment. Originally developed for professional detailing applications, the AR Blue Clean Pro 12-Series is now expanding into a broader range of commercial washdown environments where durability, sanitation, and ease of use are essential. Among the newest additions is the AR1220 Wall Pro, a wall-mounted electric pressure washing system engineered for facilities that require a dedicated cleaning solution. Its stainless-steel construction, compact footprint, and professional-grade performance make it well suited for applications that demand frequent cleaning while maximizing available workspace. Beyond vehicle care, AR sees growing opportunities for the 12-Series in commercial kitchens, food-service operations, processing facilities, and other washdown applications. By combining industrial cleaning expertise with purposebuilt system design, the 12-Series demonstrates AR Blue Clean Pro’s commitment to helping customers maintain cleaner, safer, and more efficient facilities. Learn more at arblueclean.com.

The Centurion HX 8.0 is a rotating nozzle built for hydro excavation work, where cutting through compacted earth, clay, and frozen ground has to happen without damaging buried utilities. A controlled RPM rotor keeps the water jet stable rather than spinning at the uncontrolled speeds of a standard turbo nozzle, and flow straightening technology reduces turbulence as water enters the nozzle, delivering a more cohesive stream and reducing the volume of water needed to move material. Inside, a tungsten carbide rotor stands up to the abrasive wear of recycled or silty water while the stainless-steel housing resists corrosion and impact on the job site. An anti-static, replaceable jacket protects internal components and helps manage static buildup during high pressure flow. The nozzle handles up to 4,200 psi and hot water up to 212°F through a ½ in. FNPT inlet. Its rotor and seats can be replaced individually rather than discarding the whole nozzle.

BARENS Centurion Stainless-Steel 50 Ft. Spring-Rewind 1/8 in. Hose Reel www.barens.com | orders@barens.com | 800-676-0607

This Centurion stainless-steel, 50 ft. spring-rewind hose reel is built for soft wash, hydro excavation, and high-pressure cleaning rigs that run hard in wet, corrosive conditions. The stainless-steel body and swivel resist rust and chemical exposure that wear down standard powder-coated reels over time, holding up to 5,000 psi and fluid temperatures up to 300°F. A spring-driven rewind mechanism pulls the 50 ft. length of 3/8 in. hose back onto the drum automatically with a governed retraction speed that keeps the reel from whipping back at full tension. Inlet and outlet bushings support both ½ in. and 3/8 in. connections, so the reel adapts to different plumbing setups on a truck or trailer. A multi-position mounting base allows installation on truck beds, trailer walls, or overhead brackets. Manufactured in Italy, it’s built to keep hose management simple on demanding mobile service routes. Cleaner Times • October 2026 • 13

The SW1165HEZ is built for soft wash contractors who run their pump off the truck all day, every day. A 196 cc Honda GX200 engine with recoil and electric start drives a gear system that brings engine speed down from 3,500 rpm to 550 rpm, matching what the pump needs and cutting down on wear. The pump is a Cent urion CP Z42PPGR diaphragm pump with Viton seals, built to hold up against soft wash chemicals over the long run while putting out 300 psi at 11.0 gpm. Aluminum head plates stop the pump from flexing under load, and a bolt-on pressure regulator keeps leak points to a minimum when adjusting output. Anti-vibration feet and bolt-down mounting hardware make it truck-mount ready right out of the box. Mounted on an aluminum frame, it stays bolted to a truck or trailer for crews cleaning siding and roofing, where controlled, low-pressure output matters. It’s backed by a three-year engine warranty.

The HW4213HSAS brings hot water performance to fleet wash and mobile pressure washing operators who need to cut through grease, oil, and heavy soil on the job. A 389 cc Honda GX390 engine drives the pump directly, while a diesel-fired burner and a 105 ft. schedule 80 heating coil, wrapped in stainless steel, keep hot water flowing at 4,200 psi and 4.2 gpm. Building the pressure is a CP CTG2S triplex pump with an external unloader, mounted on a heavy-duty, stainless-steel frame with 13 in. ultra-premium flat-free wheels that detach for bolt-down mounting to a truck or trailer. An adjustable thermostat and thermal relief valve keep temperature and pressure in check, and a centerbalanced lift point makes moving the unit around the shop straightforward. Add an extra layer of protection to your pressure washing setup with a safety release gun assembly. The safety strap attaches to the operator and connects to the release mechanism on the pressure washer gun. If the gun is dropped, pulled away, or accidentally released, the strap activates the release pin, allowing the gun trigger to disengage and stop the high-pressure spray. This helps reduce the risk of uncontrolled spray and provides added protection during demanding cleaning applications. Designed for professional pressure washing use, the assembly offers peace of mind while operating high-pressure equipment. Always inspect and properly secure the strap before each use.

MI-T-M KEEPS GROWING AMID CHANGES

NEW ESOP PLAN A MAJOR CONTRIBUTOR

M

i-T-M Corporation is 55 years old and going strong, enhancing the chance it will be around well into the future. The latest change occurred in 2021, when Mi-T-M became an employee-owned company. 30 • October 2026 • Cleaner Times

In 1971 A.J. Spiegel founded Mi-T-M Corporation in Peosta, Iowa. The local entrepreneur, born and raised in the area, contributed greatly to its growth. Mi-T-M was incorporated in 1973 and grew to become a leading designer and manufacturer

of high-quality industrial equipment. The company celebrated its 50th anniversary in 2021. Today it’s an employee-owned company through an Employee Stock Ownership Plan (ESOP). The program has helped create a culture

by Jill Gartz

of ownership, accountability, and financial well-being among workers. Matt Hoefer, director of channel sales and support, has been with Mi-T-M for 30 years and supports this new direction. “It’s exciting. It has been an interesting process,” Hoefer remarks. “When you are privately owned for 50 years, you’re used to either one individual or a few people making all the decisions within the Cleaner Times • October 2026 • 31

company. Now, as an employee-owned company, everyone takes ownership.” He adds it takes time to develop that culture and for employees to understand that what they do matters to the company’s overall success. Karl Loeffelholz is the channel sales manager of commercial pressure washer. “I’ve been here for 35 years, and the company has seen so much growth. It’s really about the people and the manufacturing. It’s also about

32 • October 2026 • Cleaner Times

your customer base,” Loeffelholz says, adding one big change he’s seen is the pride in ownership. “What I’ve seen from the company and management is bringing everybody together. I see that pride in ownership coming across in the meetings that we have.” Loeffelholz responds to where he expects this new direction to lead them—“We foresee growth. We’re looking at a lot of new products and

tying them in with programs and our customers,” Loeffelholz shares. Hoefer noted that the company’s biggest shift is improved communication. Teams now meet more often and share information more freely. As a result, employees better understand individual customers and their value to the company’s growth. “Everyone rises to a challenge. If we need to face a situation head-on, people step up. They can look for ways to become more efficient and better ways to communicate what’s happening,” Hoefer says. He adds that decision-making is no longer centralized in one department. Instead, other teams are actively taking on more leadership roles and responsibility for the company’s success. Hoefer says,“We’ve been fortunate over the past five years. We have seen an increase in our share price. It all leads to very positive momentum moving forward. People see that value has increased, and it gives them more of a feeling of inclusion.” Sarah DeMarte, marketing manager, says the change is going over well. “Right now, we’re really striving, and there’s a lot of camaraderie among all of the employees.” DeMarte says we’ve been participating in community service and doing more engagement events that have helped to build our ESOP culture. The company is building upon their community service work. Hoefer highlights that Mi-T-M selected four charities this year to help. They include a camp for disabled kids and adults, the local Humane Society, a veterans’ organization, and a local veterans’ center. “We’ve stepped up as a company to help some really cool causes,” Hoefer comments. “We are taking on more of an initiative to help in the community,” Loeffelholz adds. “Peosta is a small town.” He notes that A.J. Spiegel has done a lot to grow the community over the years while never wanting to take much credit for any of his work. “This gives us some outreach for the employees to take some ownership, not only in what we do as a company

but also in what we do in the community,” Loeffelholz says. A.J. is well-respected and admired for his generosity and business sense. Loeffelholz notes Spiegel looked at many opportunities for diversity. He often went after larger customers, especially during tough times throughout the company’s history. “It seems like we’ve always rallied together when there was adversity,” Loeffelholz comments. “Several years were pretty difficult, but because of our company diversification, we were able to keep growing.” “We have so many opportunities to do business out there. Every single year I would see A.J. (Spiegel) reinvesting in the company,” Loeffelholz shares. “We’ve always reacted to different events that have gone on in the country,” Hoefer remarks. “There have been different situations where Mi-T-M has stepped up over the years to supply products and support our customers.” The company helped with Desert Storm cleanup, assisted with the Exxon Valdez oil spill, and survived the stock market crash in 2008. “We were fortunate to have that forwardthinking of what he (A.J.) was looking for,” Loeffelholz says. Employees aim to keep the company heading in that same direction. “We do have a roadmap for the future,” Loeffelholz shares, “not only building on the products that we currently produce but also looking at different areas where we can provide equipment and service.” “It’s part of the culture and part of the ESOP. It’s not just what we’re doing today, but what we are doing in the future to continue to grow the company,” Loeffelholz comments. “We’re using the ESOP as a way to recruit and retain our employees. If you want to recruit and keep them, you have to have a plan for the future and build excitement,” Loeffelholz shares. “That’s what we continue to do as well.” CT Cleaner Times • October 2026 • 33

Or perhaps it’s a capable and compassionate pharmacist, physical therapist, or veterinarian being sought. The good news is that competitive awards from the CETA Scholarship Foundation are helping students pursue studies that will qualify them as welders, pharmacists, physical therapists, veterinarians, business owners,

Ceta Scholarship Basics The CETA Scholarship Foundation awards scholarships to as many as nine qualifying applicants (CETA members along with employees and their families annually on a competitive basis.) An applicant must be a full-time student for the academic year beginning with fall semester at a college, community college, technical college, university, or graduate school. In general, three scholarships are awarded in each of the three eligible membership classes: manufacturers, suppliers, and distributors. A ranking of applicants by an independent evaluator at an accredited university determines scholarship recipients. If a qualified applicant cannot be identified in one or more of the membership classes,

one (or more) at-large scholarship(s) is awarded to the remaining applicant(s) with the highest ranking(s) regardless of his or her membership class. CETA member companies that sponsor scholarships gain recognition. Any member company may pledge any amount for scholarships. The company is then added as a sponsor on the scholarship and recognized at all CETA meetings. Funds donated beyond those required to support (potentially) nine annual scholarships are added to an endowment (aimed at creating a self-funding scholarship program). President and CEO Kevin Beckett

F

or more than 85 years, R.W. Beckett Corporation has been helping customers solve combustion challenges through engineering, innovation, and an unwavering commitment to the industries it serves. That commitment is rooted in a mission that has guided the company for generations: “By God’s Grace, we will grow, relentlessly improve, and passionately serve our customers and fellow employees.” According to President and CEO Kevin Beckett, that mission continues to shape every major decision the company makes, from investments in people and manufacturing to product innovation and strategic acquisitions. “Our mission is much more than a statement on a wall,” says Beckett. “It challenges us to continually improve, invest for the long term, and create value for the customers, employees, and industries we serve. That philosophy has guided Beckett for decades and continues to guide us today.” While many know Beckett for its burner technology, today’s company

is far broader than a single product category. Through decades of investment, product development, and strategic acquisitions, Beckett has evolved into a combustion technology organization focused on delivering integrated solutions that improve performance, reliability, diagnostics, connectivity, sustainability, and customer success. “We’ve always believed that longterm success comes from continuous investment,” says Beckett, “We provide investment in people, investment in technology, investment in manufacturing, and investment in companies that bring unique capabilities that help us better serve our customers and the markets they operate in.” This philosophy has guided Beckett’s growth strategy over the past decade and continues to shape the company’s vision for the future.

A STRATEGIC APPROACH TO GROWTH

Unlike acquisitions that focus primarily on financial scale, Beckett’s acquisition strategy has focused on building capabilities, preserving

expertise, strengthening customer support, and investing in the industries served by the companies it acquires. Recent additions to the R.W. Beckett family of companies—such as F.I.D.A., Delavan, Thermo Products, United States Controls, and most recently Wayne Combustion Systems—all contribute important technologies, products, engineering expertise, and market knowledge that support Beckett’s long-term vision. “Every acquisition needs to bring something meaningful to our customers and to the industries we’re privileged to serve,” Beckett explains. “We’re not pursuing acquisitions simply to get bigger. We’re looking for great companies, talented people, and technologies that create lasting value. The goal is to strengthen the markets we’re participating in, accelerate innovation, preserve expertise, and ensure customers have strong, stable partners they can rely on for the long term.” Over time those investments have created something increasingly unique within the combustion industry: a portfolio that spans fuel storage, Cleaner Times • October 2026 • 43

fuel safety, fuel conditioning, fuel delivery, combustion, controls, diagnostics, connectivity, monitoring, and equipment support.

A COMMITMENT TO THE PRESSURE WASHER INDUSTRY

The acquisition of Wayne Combustion Systems has naturally generated questions throughout the pressure washer industry. Manufacturers, distributors, service organizations, rental operators, and equipment owners all want to understand what this acquisition means for their businesses and for the future of the industry. According to Beckett, the answer begins with a long-term commitment to the market itself. “The heated pressure washer industry has been an important market for Wayne for decades, and it will continue to be an important market for Beckett for decades to come,” says Beckett. “Our investment in Wayne reflects our confidence in the future of the industry and our commitment to supporting the manufacturers, distributors, technicians, and entrepreneurs who make it successful.” Beckett emphasizes that the acquisition was driven by the opportunity to strengthen capabilities, expand technical expertise, and accelerate innovation—not simply to increase market presence. By combining the engineering resources, application knowledge, 44 • October 2026 • Cleaner Times

and industry experience of both organizations, the company believes it can bring greater value to customers throughout the pressure washer market. Manufacturers in the pressure washer industry also depend on supply partners capable of providing consistency, continuity, and long-term commitment. Beckett believes its manufacturing scale, operational resources, supply chain capabilities, and long-term investment approach can further strengthen that foundation for the industry while supporting customers for years to come. “Competition has always challenged companies to innovate, and innovation remains our focus,” Beckett explains. “By bringing together talented teams, complementary technologies, and decades of application expertise, we believe we can develop new solutions faster and provide even greater support to our customers.” The company also recognizes that strong customer relationships remain the foundation of long-term success. Customers should expect continued investment in technical support, product development, training, diagnostics, renewablefuel solutions, telematics, controls, and service technologies designed specifically for the demands of the pressure washer industry. Those investments are already producing tangible benefits. Through

initiatives such as Fuel Agnostic Combustion Technology (F.A.C.T.)™, Beckett has been developing combustion platforms capable of operating across a broad range of fuel types while meeting increasingly stringent performance and emissions requirements. These investments help promote CARB compliance with a fully proven integrated Tank-toFlame™ suite of products to help heated pressure washer manufacturers align with and drive the industry toward zero-carbon emissions and renewable fuel adoption. “At the end of the day, customers will continue to choose suppliers based on the value they deliver,” says Beckett. “Market share is not the objective. Creating value is the objective. Our responsibility is to earn our customers’ trust every day through reliable products, strong support, meaningful innovation, and a genuine commitment to helping them succeed.” Looking ahead, Beckett sees significant opportunities to combine Wayne’s respected burner expertise with its broader Tank-to-Flame™ technology platform, creating new possibilities for equipment manufacturers while continuing to support the unique needs of the heated pressure washer industry. “Our success will ultimately be measured by the success of our customers,” Beckett concludes. “If we’re

helping manufacturers build better equipment, helping technicians solve problems faster, helping distributors grow their businesses, and helping equipment owners improve uptime and performance, then we’ve achieved our objective. That’s the standard we intend to be measured against.” “We recognize that trust is earned, not acquired, and our commitment is to continue earning that trust through investment, innovation, responsiveness, and support for the pressure washer industry.” “The future isn’t simply about mechanical equipment,” Beckett says. “It’s about intelligent systems that provide useful information when people need it.”

46 • October 2026 • Cleaner Times

THE NEXT FRONTIER: CONNECTIVITY AND TELEMATICS

Beckett also sees significant opportunities in the future of connected equipment and telematics within the pressure washer industry. As fleets become larger and uptime becomes even more critical, operators increasingly want visibility into equipment health and performance. To address those needs, Beckett continues to develop and invest in technologies such as our Remote Insight™, a cellular-enabled monitoring platform that is currently under development and will be released in the near future. “Connected equipment creates entirely new opportunities,” says Beckett. “Instead of waiting for a problem to occur, operators can understand what’s happening in real time and make more informed decisions.” When launched Remote Insight™ will enable equipment monitoring, alerting, performance visibility, and remote access capabilities that can improve operational awareness and help identify issues before they result in unexpected downtime. “The same telematics revolution that transformed transportation, logistics, and industrial equipment is beginning to transform combustion systems,” Beckett explains. “We’re still in the early stages of what’s possible.” As Beckett looks toward the future, the company’s strategy remains grounded in the same mission that has guided it for generations: to grow, relentlessly improve, and passionately serve its customers and fellow employees. That mission continues to shape every investment, every innovation, and every commitment the company makes to the pressure-washer industry and the customers it serves. For more information on R.W. DISPOSAL OF CHEMICALS by Diane M. Calabrese

T

he “age of chaos” is often used to describe the time in which we live, but the “age of contradiction” might be more apt. Determination to properly dispose of chemicals exemplifies the contradiction. While power-washing contractors, manufacturing facilities, and all businesses in our industry commit to proper disposal, they often work at cross purposes with the public. For instance, contractors capture wastewater from cleaning so that it does not mingle with the surface waters of the world. Meanwhile, some people casually drop extra pharmaceuticals into their sink or toilet. The improper disposal adds to an even bigger problem: Depending upon the prescription drug, as much as 90 percent of it is passed through the body intact and exits as waste products. Although 30 percent, not the high 90, is the common amount of passthrough of a drug, the amount is significant. From hormones to antibiotics to pain relievers, the drugs have a negative effect on aquatic life, altering life cycles, immunity, etc. Pharmacies and other vendors now routinely schedule take-back days when consumers can return unused and outdated drugs for proper disposal, but too few take advantage. Everyone has a role to play in proper disposal of chemicals. Unfortunately, not everyone knows it. Homeowner use is often excluded from tight regulation; and without a personal interest, it is common to presume that if something is legal, it must be safe. If there’s one thing the professionals in our industry know, however, it’s that even if others are erring, they must get it right. Get it right because it’s the correct thing to do for the environment, and it sets an example for others.

WHERE TO BEGIN

Melanie Ramirez, the environmental, safety, and compliance director for Standard Paints Inc. in Mansfield, TX, has some recommendations regarding where to begin when determined to get disposal right. (Note that some of the recommendations logically overlap with issues of chemical transport.) “I’d say that a business owner or manufacturing facility should be able to answer the following questions when it comes to the transportation of or disposal of any chemicals: Do I have a list of the chemicals being used in my facility? Do I have a safety data sheet for each of the chemicals I have on hand? Do I know the proper way to transport the chemicals I use? “Do I know how to properly dispose of the chemicals I use?” continues Ramirez. “Do I know what the disposal and/or transportation protocols are? Or do I know if any are in place at my facility or place of business? Have I received or gotten any training on how to properly handle and dispose of the chemicals I use within my work environment?” Training is a recurring theme in connection with chemicals, and for good reason. “Training is mandatory and required at all levels—federal, state, and local,” says Ramirez. There’s another question that should be asked, says Ramirez. “Am I aware of any plan, program, and/or standard operating procedure that is in place for the transportation of and for the disposal of the chemicals being used?” Responses to the questions taken together allow the “where to begin” question to be settled. “Answering these questions should work as a selfcheck, per the question’s instructions or criteria,” explains Ramirez. “These questions will also help get anyone started, point them in the right direction, and/or help ensure they are ready and know what they are doing.” The “know what they are doing” is at the core of proper disposal. It demands focus. Cleaner Times • October 2026 • 49

Or let’s use the word engagement. In the June 2025 issue of Cleaner Times, Linda Chambers, brand and sales manager at GCE/Soap Warehouse Brand in Norcross, GA, shared observations about the issues that swirl around disposal of chemicals. Among the issues was the one we covered in the first section—i.e. the drain, a sewer grate, the garbage, etc. are not the places to dispose of chemicals. Everyone in our industry does know that.

But where is the concise and accurate information about proper disposal? Chambers referenced the rather expansive information (short on detail) provided in section 13 of the SDS [safety data sheet]. The section advises that the holder of the chemical dispose of it in accordance with all applicable regulations and then cites regulations that may apply. Lack of specificity—except for the bottom line,

which is to get it right—challenges everyone. Yet chemicals that are no longer used, are expired, or are left over from a particular job must be disposed of properly to reduce risks associated with storing them. Depending upon the state where a business is located, there may be help available. For example, Montgomery County, MD, runs a program called Ecowise for small quantity generators (SQGs) of potentially hazardous waste. SQG is the federal term for a business or nonprofit that produces less than 200 pounds of waste per calendar month. The Ecowise program can save businesses as much as 75 percent over the cost of contracting for disposal with a private firm. It requires no contract and keeps paperwork to a minimum. The list of accepted materials is quite robust, including acids, bases, fuels, gasoline, hydraulic fuel, oxidizers, and much more. Programs like Ecowise are in place around the nation and are particularly useful to fledgling businesses. Check the availability.

THE BIG PICTURE

Interest in proper disposal of chemicals is kept strong by regulations. More than that, though, it’s kept strong because of the interest shared by almost everyone in doing the most with the least chemical. Nothing trims disposal costs or efforts more than reducing the amount of chemical used. That statement does not apply only to the end user of a chemical. It includes research and development sectors that strive to extract the greatest and safest potency from the smallest amount of chemicals. Green chemistry or trying to accomplish as much as possible with biodegradable substances will cut disposal needs with each advance it makes. (Similarly, application of green chemistry to waste treatment— or using methods such as oxidation and distillation—will do the same.) Many initiatives, which would benefit from more coordination, are 50 • October 2026 • Cleaner Times

carrying us in the direction of sustainability, including a goal that requires proper disposal of chemicals. And the initiatives get tangled with the many legislative efforts (and acronyms). Since 1976 the RCRA (Resource Conservation and Recovery Act) has given the EPA the authority to develop programs for waste management. RCRA is often referred to as the legislation that dictated a cradleto-grave plan for the party responsible for generating a hazardous waste. With overlapping legislation, and EPA’s boundaries in flux under the current administration, responsibilities and expectations in the environmental sphere are a little more difficult to define. But some programs that tie to proper disposal of chemicals remain in place and are clear. EPA emphasizes its Safer Choice program to reduce use of chemicals (and generate less waste). OSHA (Occupational Safety and Health Administration) has an initiative that encourages transition to safer alternatives. (The programs complement each other.) According to the philosophy undergirding OSHA’s initiative, the more chemical hazards can be eliminated or reduced at the source, the more workers will benefit (from less exposure). As a corollary there will be fewer chemicals that require disposal. The positives that accrue from using safer alternatives are many more than just the reduction in the need for disposal. For one, fewer chemicals mean fewer illnesses and deaths related to exposure. Then there’s the reduction in costs. Costs to dispose of chemicals, costs to treat illnesses caused by exposure, and costs to use PPE [personal protective equipment] are among them. OSHA sees another huge benefit in adopting a transition to a safer mindset of safer alternatives. That benefit is a reduction in the likelihood of a “regrettable substitution.” In colloquial terms, that regret would be going from bad to worse, something that could happen if a chemical that poses

a threat is retained and is then altered (and not for the better). The rules, logistics, and costs of disposal of chemicals must be navigated. But before venturing out, there’s a good way to make sailing just a bit easier. First, follow through on the safer (or safest) choice recommendation. Then, don’t buy more than is needed. Don’t buy more even if it’s a good price—first because there’s a cost to disposal, and second because

buying more of anything than is needed or will be used generates unnecessary waste. Contradiction? Chaos? How about clarity and coherence? Possible and preferable, and perhaps with AI as a partner? Or perhaps not. A recent Gemini query on the best way to dispose of a liter of sodium hypochlorite came up with the following as the top answer: Dilute heavily and pour it down the drain. CT

EXTERIOR CLEANING INDUSTRY TAKES STOCK WITH NEW SURVEY

Exterior cleaning professionals make consequential business decisions every day—pricing, hiring, equipment investment, and market positioning often without reliable data to back them up. Unlike some trades, the exterior cleaning industry lacks a consistent body of research that reflects what’s actually happening in the field. Power Washers of North America (PWNA) is working to change that. The organization has launched a State of the Industry Survey aimed at building the first substantive data set drawn directly from working professionals across the exterior cleaning trades—pressure washing, window cleaning, kitchen exhaust, and commercial cleaning. What the Survey Covers The survey covers the conditions shaping businesses right now: workforce availability, customer demand, operational costs, training 52 • October 2026 • Cleaner Times

and compliance needs, and expectations for the year ahead. Responses from businesses of different sizes, specialties, and geographic regions will determine how useful the findings ultimately are. A narrow sample produces narrow conclusions; broad participation produces something the whole industry can actually use. “The data is only as strong as those who respond,” says PWNA President Clint Reynolds, who will present the findings at the Summit Mastermind in Cabo and at Elevate 2027. What Happens with the Results PWNA plans to share the findings broadly across the industry, not just with its own membership. The intent is to give exterior cleaning businesses access to benchmarks they can compare against their own experience, and to give PWNA and other stakeholders a clearer picture of where education, advocacy, and resources are most needed. Participants can enter for a chance to win prizes up to $2,500, including

a three-night stay at Kalahari, a oneyear PWNA Enterprise Membership, convention passes, and gift cards. Prize details and eligibility requirements are included in the survey. The survey is available at form. typeform.com/to/Sb4b2uBm. Once you’ve completed it, share it with your peers, your trade contacts, and anyone else working in the exterior cleaning industry. The findings will only be as strong as the participation behind them.

culture, marketing, sales, operations, technology, and financials, and sends them home with drafted goals, a starter marketing plan, and a written standard operating procedure. Friday’s Wood Defender class is the company’s signature program for adding or growing staining as a service. Beyond hands-on product demonstrations and a live fence-staining at a nearby job site, the day covers how to market and sell staining services,

select equipment for any budget, manage a job site, and gauge the revenue a staining line can add to a fence business. It also includes classroom instruction and a tour of the Standard Paints manufacturing facility. Graduates earn Certified Wood Defender Applicator status and four continuing-education credits from the American Fence Association. “We cover the cost of Tony’s workshop because investing in these

contractors is investing in our own business,” said Todd Steen, senior vice president of sales and marketing at Standard Paints Inc. “When a fence company learns to sell staining, deliver a finish that lasts, and run a tighter operation, they grow and we grow with them. Bringing in an instructor of Tony’s caliber and putting the whole program within reach is how we back that up.” “Most fence contractors are excellent at building fence, but many don’t really have the time to fully focus on the business side,” said Tony Thornton, founder of The Fence Consulting Group. “We spend the first day on the key things that move the needle, and Wood Defender takes the group to the field the next morning. It’s a rare combination under one roof.” The two-day class runs monthly this fall in Mansfield, Texas: October 29–30 and November 19–20, 2026. Each session combines Thursday’s workshop and an evening networking happy hour with Friday’s full-day class. Companies may send up to four attendees. TRANSPORT SAFETY FOR CHEMICALS by Diane M. Calabrese

N

inety-four naturally occurring elements stand among 118 elements known to date. Among tens of millions of known combinations of elements—compounds—are the relatively inert (sodium chloride, NaCl) and the highly reactive (sulfuric acid, H2SO4). Few service-providing compounds are more familiar than sodium chloride, which resides among kitchen spices and travels by ton loads in dump trucks to pacify icy roads in winter (though sodium on its own is an unstable and dangerous element). We plucked sulfuric acid as an example of a reactive compound because it gets so much current media attention—not only is it used to formulate 65 percent of fertilizers worldwide, but also it is used in the treatment of wastewater. There’s a lot more safety in transporting 50 pounds of salt in a pickup bed than there is in transporting 100 milliliters of sulfuric acid in a reagent jar. Spill the first and it’s inconvenient; spill the second and serious harm might occur to people, property, and the environment (including animals and plants). The boundary between a chemical and a hazardous chemical is based on whether contact with the chemical is harmful to people, property, and/or the environment. Those hazards often occur through initial contact. We can conjure scenarios where sodium chloride causes harm, such as a massive spill into a freshwater pond that killed aquatic organisms. But as far as transporting sodium chloride, a hazardous definition does not apply. Transport safety for chemicals begins with knowing what’s being moved and often how much is being moved, given the rule governing a miniscule amount may differ from that for a larger quantity.

The Hazardous Material Transportation Act of 1975 (HMTA) gave the authority for designating hazardous materials to the U.S. Secretary of Transportation. A risk to health and safety and/or property are fundamental determinants. Regulations that apply to transport fall under several different parts of 49 CFR, parts that cover procedures and policies, material designations, packaging requirements, and operational rules. Federal rules supersede any state and local requirements unless the state or local rules are more stringent. So complicated were the rules—in fact, they still are complicated—that in 1990 Congress passed the Hazardous Materials Transportation Uniform Safety Act (HMTUSA). The HMTUSA is supposed “to clarify the maze of conflicting state, local, and federal regulations,” according to the Hazardous Materials Overview provided by the U.S. Department of Transportation (DOT). Or to be precise, we must write the Pipeline and Hazardous Materials Safey Administration (PHMSA) at the DOT. Yes, if chemicals and potentially hazardous substances are moving, it is PHMSA that has the immediate purview. As such, PHMSA describes the environment in which it operates as “dynamic and challenging,” a description that also applies to anyone transporting chemicals. Where to begin? Mike Gruver, the general manager as well as the lead chemist at Hydrus Detergents in Estherville, IA, says there are four essential questions that any business owner—contractor, distributor, or manufacturer—can use as a self-check on whether an exacting program for safely transporting chemicals is in place. See the sidebar to read the questions Gruver suggests using as a guide. Notice that the requirements from

Cleaner Times • October 2026 • 57

OSHA (Occupational Safety and Health Administration) are in the mix. That’s because in addition to DOT (PHMSA) rules, there are OSHA rules that apply. The OSHA rules are applicable if there is an emergency response but may apply more widely depending on interpretation of local conditions. The applicable OSHA standards are 1910.120 (Hazardous waste operation and emergency response) and 1910.134 (Respiratory Protection). Rules from the EPA (Environmental Protection Agency) may also come into play if there is a discharge of oil (40 CFR 110) or designation of hazardous substances (40 CFR 116). It doesn’t end there. Should any radioactive materials be on the transport list, the Department of Energy (DOE) and the National Regulatory Commission (NRC) also weigh in on rules. “Overlapping authority” is what it’s all labeled among the regulating entities.

58 • October 2026 • Cleaner Times

Power washing contractors may think it unlikely they will get tied together with NRC or even DOE. But with larger contracts for cleaning at hospital or laboratory sites, for instance, wastewater may be monitored for radioactive waste. Moreover, when participating in the cleanup of spills on highways or elsewhere, contractors may encounter radioactive waste. To write that things can get complicated for any business that transports chemicals directly or indirectly (as part of waste) is an understatement. The potential for complication is the reason professional organizations in our industry emphasize the need for training in hazmat protocols. OSHA requires training in hazardous waste operations and emergency response (HAZWOPER) for employees at a level that matches the likelihood the employees will have an encounter or involvement in response to an incident.

The training in HAZWOPER required may be none, but in our industry some level is generally needed. (Yes, Hazwoper is a strange sounding acronym and often written in all capital letters, but the training required matters.) The section 14 of the SDS to which Gruver refers is part of the Globally Harmonized System (GHS) for chemical classification and handling, which emerged from United Nations (UN) efforts. Included in section 14 are the UN number (four digits), UN proper shipping name, and transport hazard class or category such as flammable, toxic, or corrosive.

MORE OF INTEREST

Streamlined A to Z directions for transport of chemicals are “not there yet.” But streamlining is likely going to be one of the positive outcomes of working with AI. Meanwhile, consider the scope of chemicals transported each day. According to PHMSA, there are nearly one million daily shipments of hazardous materials by land, sea, and air in the United States. In addition to the surface transport modes, there is a pipeline transportation system of 2.6 million miles that PHMSA works diligently to keep safe. Safety depends not only upon the employees at regulatory agencies like PHMSA but also on the sectors of industry who properly train their employees. As for training in hazardous materials (and that includes chemicals that may under certain conditions become hazardous), some of the discretion given to employers may be surprising. An employer who is an owner-operator or any employer may self-train and self-test. The employer has a great deal of latitude because it is the responsibility of the employer to determine the qualifications of the trainer. First, the employer must determine the level of training needed (great discretion and enormous responsibility). The only time federal regulators get involved in certifying trainers is if

some of the transport involves the FAA [Federal Aviation Administration]. Otherwise, who tests and verifies employees know their responsibilities is a matter for the employer to decide. And should something go awry? Violations of hazmat regulations, including training, carry high penalties—up to $27,500 for each violation. Imprisonment is also a potential penalty for the most serious transgressions.

IMMERSION

Power washing contractors may imagine that it’s unlikely any of the chemical transport rules from the “maze” of regulators will be pertinent to their operations. Even if they are using only biodegradable soaps (chemicals), however, they are likely to have expectations to meet. (Again, professional societies help to sort out expectations.) At a minimum, OSHA will expect a great deal from employers. Use the tools available to get quick immersion. Background and recommendations we have made previously bear repeating. Exposure to certain chemicals causes health problems, which may result in fatalities. According to OSHA, illnesses tied to exposure to chemicals on the job approach 200,000 each year. There are also deaths estimated at 50,000 annually (primarily from long-term illnesses). While OSHA aims to partner with employers to minimize exposure to chemicals, NIOSH [National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health] aims to make it as simple as possible to understand the nature and the risks of specific chemicals. As such, it makes available (open access) excellent retrieval tools for information about chemicals. (See https://www.cdc.gov/ niosh/chemicals/about/index.html to get started.) In addition to its own NIOSH Pocket Guide to Chemical Hazards (in website, pdf, and mobile formats), NIOSH links to the International Chemical Safety Card (ICSC) database. The ICSC database can be queried by the name of a chemical, the CAS [Chemical Abstracts Service, American Chemical Society] number for a chemical, the UN number for a chemical, or the ICSC number. A query can also be entered with a text string. CAS.org itself is also a good resource for learning more about chemicals. CT

SELF-CHECK FOR A BUSINESS OWNER—SAFE TRANSPORT OF CHEMICALS Questions a business owner should be able to answer include the following*: • Do you trust the integrity of your SDS [safety data sheet]? If you do, then the data in Section 14 is a starting point for your products. • Are your people properly trained to meet DOT and OSHA requirements for hazardous materials transportation? • With regards to SDS section 14 of a particular chemical, do you have the proper container and labeling materials on site? • Do you know what the proper DOT descriptions are for your products so that your BOL [bill of lading] is correct for transportation of anything classified as a hazardous material? *Questions provided by Mike Gruver, Hydrus Detergents.

POWER WASHING COMPANIES STEP UP FALL

MARKETING TACTICS by Jill Gartz

ower washing is seeing a multi-billion-dollar surge. Driven by commercial demand and residential maintenance, the equipment market is projected to reach $7.37 billion by 2031. Competition to get a piece of the client market is challenging. Here are some strategies exterior cleaning companies are using to gain momentum.

CHRIS SLATER, OWNER OF D & A DRONE SERVICES LOCATED IN MYERSVILLE, MARYLAND Visit https://cadronewash.com His focus is on large commercial buildings, and safety is of utmost importance. That’s why he purchased a couple of drones to do the job. Slater said drones save clients time and money. “If they hire a drone pilot, we can come in and reach the areas they cannot, and it’s much cheaper.” The use of special equipment can add thousands of dollars to a job’s cost. With this system, buildings three- to five-stories high can be cleaned without trucks, lifts, or ladders. “We try to eliminate as much of that as possible for safety reasons,“ Slater says. He adds drones can get the job done in a couple of days, which is the time it would have normally taken to put up the scaffolding alone.  Power washing with drones is common in the South. “From North Carolina, South Carolina, and down, you see a lot of it. It’s pretty popular down that way,” Slater adds.  Now in his second year, Slater hopes his business strategy will catch on in Maryland, too. “Up this way, people really don’t know about pressure washing with

drones. I think if we get our name out there, it will become very popular. The hardest part is getting people to understand that drones do more than just photography,” Slater states. Slater wants to target local property management companies this fall. “There are a ton of properties that need to be cleaned up.” He wants to demonstrate the true capabilities of drone power washing in person.  Slater said structures should be power washed twice a year. “The more you let these buildings go, the dirtier they get, and the harder it is for us to clean,” Slater said, adding that the bill goes up too. Curb appeal is essential as a clean building attracts more customers.  While early spring marks his busiest season and primary advertising push, he plans to ramp up networking this fall. Slater hopes to expand his customer base to large hotels, healthcare facilities, warehouses, distribution centers, major movie theaters, and buyers looking to restore older homes. He would also like to partner with companies that need help cleaning taller buildings.

BRENDA FARLEY, OWNER OF CLEAR WATER PROWASH, LOCATED IN COLUMBUS, OHIO Visit www.clearwaterprowash.com She has been in business for more than 23 years and serves mostly residential customers. Their company niche is patio paver restoration.  “I’ve been very blessed,” Farley says, adding she hasn’t had to do much marketing other than just being on social media. “We are on Facebook, Instagram, TikTok, YouTube, LinkedIn, and X—basically every social media platform you can think of,” Farley shares.  She notes that much of their business is driven by word-of-mouth recommendations, particularly in local Facebook groups. “Our name comes up a lot,” she says. “We also rank highly in search engines for all of our services.”  She also started a Facebook Group for established local power-washing companies. “We all count on each other.  We’re all small companies. If we need help, we go to our group and ask for

people to join in a project. Together, we get the project done,” Farley says.   Farley said she is very, very busy in the spring, and the work carries through until the season begins to slow down. “With the pavers, we can work through that lull. By the time people get back from vacations and are getting the kids ready for school, the phone starts ringing again.” Patio paver restoration keeps them busy most of the year. She said the only time she gets off the truck is in the winter, when she attends training events and participates in networking opportunities.  “We take care of our customers,” Farley says. “I feel the customer is very important and that God put that into me. I put my head on my pillow every night and talk to God to make sure I did everything right.”

BRIAN LEE, FOUNDER OF ATOMIC ORANGE POWER WASH, LOCATED IN LAWRENCEVILLE, GEORGIA Visit www.atomicorange powerwash.com

Lee handles the marketing himself, utilizing yard signs, word-of-mouth, Facebook groups, and his website. “It’s all me,” he shares. Lee also puts his promotional signs in high-traffic areas in communities. The rotating signs offer a $25 discount to customers who mention seeing them.  Lee said he’s “very thorough” and “customer friendly.” “Coming from an IT background, I understand systems. I’m also a people person and can relate to them.”  He is scaling up his fall marketing strategy to maximize business visibility. He plans to join the local Chamber of Commerce to secure commercial accounts. “By joining the Chamber and continuing my yard signs, I think I will be successful,” Lee says. He plans to add home soft washing services to his business in early 2027. He is also targeting commercial cleanups ahead of the holidays, specializing in gyms, truck fleets, restaurants, gas stations, and dumpster pads.  “Everybody has to have a little bit of Christmas spirit, so they look halfway decent,” Lee says. “Santa doesn’t want to deliver to a dirty establishment.”  Atomic Orange Power Washing is located in Lawrenceville, Georgia, a populated area about 30 minutes north of Atlanta. Lee says marketing is very competitive. “I’m not afraid of competition. It brings the best out of me and gets my creative juices flowing.” Lee has a one-year-old son he hopes will take over one day. “He will get into the business in due time, but right now, he’s taking a nap.” CT 62 • October 2026 • Cleaner Times
