Happy New Year and welcome to 2026! The last year hasn’t brought much good news to those involved in manufacturing. On page 6 Diane Calabrese has written “Making the Most of the Current Murky Economy.” She has comments from three industry stalwarts who share what they are doing to navigate through these challenging times and how it is not all doom and gloom. Make sure to peruse the 2026 Sourcebook. This will allow you to have ready access to the right equipment and accessories for pressure washing, so your business can provide excellent pressure washing and steam cleaning services and grow your company’s profits. Contact information for industry manufacturers and suppliers is listed on page 10. On page 18 a multitude of products are listed under the appropriate category heading so that you can locate the equipment and supplies you need to gear up and be prepared for a successful year. The businesses listed on these pages are here to help you meet your 2026 goals by educating you about the correct pressure washers and accessories you need to purchase depending on the job, so visit their websites and call them to get started. Turn to page 52 to read about the 2026 outlook and plans for the Cleaning Equipment Trade Association (CETA) and how it could benefit your company, and flip to page 66 to read about opportunities to get involved in the Power Washers of North American (PWNA) and how your company can benefit and thrive as a member of this professional organization. MANUFACTURER OUTLOOK:
MAKING THE MOST OF THE CURRENT MURKY ECONOMY by Diane M. Calabrese
R
ealistic but not pessimistic. That sums up the outlook of manufacturers determined to make the most of an economy that is—and not an economy they wish we had. The most positive way to characterize the current economic climate, as we write in early November 2025, is murky. Even within a hazy environment, clear-eyed vision helps. The manufacturers who share their views here see clearly through the undeniable clouds. “It’s hard, very hard, to remain positive,” says Dave Thiesse, vice president of commercialization at Mi-T-M Corporation in Peosta, IA. “The uncertainty of the economy and the ‘shoot-from-the-hip’ decisions that are being made globally really make running a successful company difficult.” 6 • January 2026 • Cleaner Times
Still, Thiesse sees a bright side when equilibrium returns. “Stability will be king, and I think we all welcome that day.” Indeed, we will. For now, it’s about navigating what is—the metaphorical waves— that make stability difficult. “Being flexible is the only way to manage through these murky times,” says Thiesse. “Creating an environment that allows you to pivot as demands change or decisions are made in the federal government is the key to survival.” Opportunities continue to arise for products of all kinds even during difficult economic periods. A manufacturer must be ready to seize and capitalize on them. How can a manufacturer be best prepared? “Diversity,” says Thiesse. “Diversity in product types, go-to-market strategies, and channels of distribution create stronger manufacturers and allow them to weather the storm that is upon us,” explains Thiesse. A sustained commitment to research and development (R&D) is essential. And Thiesse’s company is committed to R&D.

LIVING WITH FLUCTUATIONS “Product development has never stopped, not during the pandemic and definitely not now,” says Thiesse. “New processes and the products that come with their development will be critical to our success.” In fact, Thiesse sees cause for optimism not only in the dedication to innovation but also in the ways that certain sectors already show signs of stabilizing (and growing). Conditions in the agricultural sector offer a reason to be optimistic, for instance. “Agriculture impacts almost every segment of business, and I feel that we are through the worst,” says Thiesse. “The optimism I have is that we are well positioned to take advantage of the business when it comes back.” Thiesse’s appraisal fits the realistic outlook that serves as a foundation for dealing with what is. (Wishing things away never works.) Many factors can contribute to a strong foundation from which to keep building and updating. Employees with a shared vision are part of the foundation. “During times like this, keeping morale at a high level is very difficult,” says Thiesse. “Because we are an ESOP [employee stock ownership plan] organization, the willingness to roll up our sleeves and do what it takes to be successful is in our DNA.”
Predictability for manufacturing—and other sectors of industry—derives from acknowledging that fluctuations are integral parts of the business cycle. There’s never a time when a manufacturer can expect a smooth course. Neither can a manufacturer always anticipate where or when the next challenge will arise. From changes in customer sentiment to supply chain interruptions and abrupt escalation in fuel prices, anything can happen. “Uncertainty is nothing new in manufacturing; it’s part of the landscape,” says Scott Hansen, president of Alkota Cleaning Systems Inc. in Alcester, SD. “The key is flexibility backed by solid fundamentals.” What’s the scope of fundamentals? “We’ve learned that staying close to customers, maintaining operational discipline, and being willing to adjust quickly when markets shift are essentials that get you through,” says Hansen. It’s about controlling what can be controlled. “Whether it’s tariffs, supply chain challenges, or changing demand, you can’t control the waves; but you can control the way you steer through them,” says Hansen. Be ready to grab opportunities. “Prepared manufacturers are those who will succeed,” says Hansen. “When opportunity knocks, whether it’s a new market, a new niche application, or a shift in technology, you want to be ready to respond.” Cleaner Times • January 2026 • 7
Through the greatest complexity in a situation, it is possible to retain one’s balance. “Every year brings unpredictability—that’s the constant,” says Hansen. “The best way to stay positive is to focus on what you can build,” explains Hansen. “When you see uncertainty as opportunity rather than threat, it shifts the entire mindset of the organization.” There are reasons for optimism, always. And that certainly includes at the beginning of 2026.
8 • January 2026 • Cleaner Times
“Despite challenges, there is a renewed appreciation for quality, reliability, and American-made production,” says Hansen. “Customers want long-term solutions, not quick fixes, and that plays to our strengths.” Working with customers to provide the solutions they require—customization to the fullest extent possible— does more than enable a manufacturer to adapt to fluctuations. The closer the tie to customers, the more
a manufacturer can extract the possibilities or opportunities from the fluctuations. There’s a lot of energy in waves, both the physical and the metaphorical ones.
THE WAY OF THE WORLD
Take off rose-colored or any otherwise tinted lenses to make the most of what’s ahead in 2026. See the world as it is. “Expect that there have always been volatile economic and/or societal challenges,” says Jeff Theis, president and CEO of ProPulse, a Schieffer Company, located in Peosta IA. “It is the way of the world.” Acknowledge any negatives but resolve to forge ahead despite them. “The main way I view the challenges of economic downturn is to always be focused on growth,” says Theis. “An individual company’s growth can outpace or at least offset general economic downturns.” To assess what’s possible, know what’s already in place. “First, I think if one defines the word ‘manufacturer’ as a company that makes goods for sale,” says Theis, “that means various processes are employed to effect change to components and/or finished products.” Processes are not simply initiated and then forgotten. “All processes must be reviewed regularly, deconstructed, and then reconstructed for improvements,” explains Theis. Improvements span a huge area. “They can be new features or options, different methods for cost reduction, different materials that may reduce costs, etc.,” says Theis. And Theis’s company most assuredly will forge ahead. “Our company will continue the process of robotic assembly in manufacturing and backroom automation as main tenets of ongoing improvement to remain and improve overall competitiveness.” The ongoing improvement is just one dimension. “Further additions to our product range that are ancillary to our core product range are anticipated as well,” explains Theis.
Searching for the predictable may be misplaced energy at this juncture. But the course of manufacturing has never been truly predictable. “In the 45 years I have been in the business of high-pressure cleaning and hydraulics, there have been numerous crises,” says Theis, and he gives us a list. “High inflation of the 1970s, currency fluctuation, government changes, tax increases, six significant recessions—including the ‘great recession of 2008,’ interest rate acceleration, social upheaval, multiple regional military conflicts, unrestricted immigration, a pandemic, supply chain interruption, increased government debt, and the like,” explains Theis. That’s quite a collection of crises, all of which proved navigable. How does a manufacturer meet each crisis? “Largely, an adept manufacturer has found ways to cope and grow by taking advantage of increased efficiencies, global supply chain integration, digital transformation, faster communications, and transport,” says Theis. “Today we see strange occurrences with tariffs, but we also see incentives for manufacturers to come onshore in certain areas,” explains Theis. That kind of matching of negative and positive makes him optimistic. “The past proves there is always an ongoing ‘yin and yang’ even if it is often out of balance, and I think those lessons learned can be applied to the future,” says Theis. “In any event, the focus requires anticipating choppy waters and finding ways to compensate for those by contingency planning and always, always, pushing for improvement and growth.” Readiness is a must. “New products, new features, new processes, and new markets are some ways of offsetting volatility,” says Theis.
standards—durability, longevity, minimal downtime—still apply. Yet in addition to the universal wants of customers, there are some refinements manufacturers should consider, or refinements about which they should at least talk to customers. Before going over the top with digital components, a manufacturer should be sure digital components that can turn equipment on remotely or a built-in tracker is what customers want.
Yes, it might be possible to start heating water while walking back to a truck for an ancillary. But is it safe? And do trackers really help locate stolen equipment, or are they simply disabled by thieves? Contract cleaners don’t want to go back to mops and buckets of hot water, but digital components where analog would do should be considered carefully by manufacturers. That is at least until AI allows digital components to repair themselves. CT
LISTENING TO THE CUSTOMERS
Maximum connectivity of everyone and everything in the digital world means that manufacturers can gain lots of insight into what customers would like to find in products they buy. The Cleaner Times • January 2026 • 9

ore power results when more people row. Take crew, which has various configurations of teams. All else being equal, an eight-member team is poised to move faster than a four-member team, even though the former is almost certainly heavier. Sharing the load and achieving more power applies to teams of all sorts. Horses and mules can do more by pulling together—hence, the power in teams used to move plows and skids and wagons. mountains is a strategy still deployed in places like Eastern Oregon (LaGrande specifically). Teams of all sorts—even pairs players in tennis—serve as an important reminder: When more individuals share the load, they not only have more power, but they also experience less fatigue. CETA, the Cleaning Equipment Trade Association, marks 2026 as its 36th year. Collegiality and collaboration among its members strengthen the results and lessen the effort required for new initiatives and continuing benefits.
Three current members of the board of directors of CETA share their perspective on the outlook for 2026 with an emphasis on how the association plans to help empower its members. Commenting below are board president Gus Alexander, who is the CEO of FNA Group in Pleasant Prairie, WI; Chad Reiffer, board secretary, who is distribution program manager at Hydro-Chem Systems in Caledonia, MI; and R. Calvin Rasmussen, advisor to the board, who is president of Royce Industries L.C. in West Jordan, UT. “As we move into 2026, we continue to face an economy filled with

uncertainty,” says Alexander. “Market conditions shift quickly, supply chains remain unpredictable, and new regulations challenge how we do business.” Alexander explains that CETA has always proven resilient. “We adapt, we innovate, and we move forward together.” In the new year even stronger collaboration among members will be fostered through more opportunities for interaction. And by “championing innovation” the association will further help members “stay competitive” as changes come, explains Alexander.
Robust programs already in place— benchmarking, technical standards and advocacy, and the annual conference (PowerClean®)—will continue. So, too, will the allied Scholarship Foundation. “CETA is committed to guiding our members through uncertainty, providing the tools and expertise needed to seize every opportunity the year may bring,” says Alexander. He adds he knows some members are concerned over uncertainty about what will transpire in 2026. “The truth is, the market will have its challenges, but our strength as an
industry lies in how we respond together,” says Alexander. Additive power allows for more movement even across obstacles. With its provision of resources, programs, and connections, CETA will help members to do more than sustain their businesses. It will help them “capitalize on opportunities that emerge even in uncertain times,” says Alexander. There are four suggestions Alexander has for members as they meet whatever the new year brings. Stay informed, collaborate, innovate, and prepare for change. Cleaner Times • January 2026 • 53
Consider the advice to innovate. Where does a company begin? “Keep an eye on emerging technologies and sustainable solutions,” says Alexander. “CETA programs and training sessions help you understand the latest advancements and how to apply them to your business.” How best to prepare for any change that comes? “Regulatory updates and industry standards can feel unnerving, but being proactive ensures you’re ready for compliance and can leverage changes as a competitive advantage,” says Alexander.
ESSENTIAL INDUSTRY
Yes, there is uncertainty in economic and societal realms. But it’s also true that “the cleaning industry remains essential for so many critical functions,” says Reiffer. “Fleet washing, industrial cleaning and degreasing, sanitizing, bird flu biosecurity, invasive species mitigation, property management, disaster restoration, sewer jetting, and so many other tasks are continuously performed and are more essential than ever,” says Reiffer. And it’s the members of CETA who manufacture and distribute the tools. More education, increased networking opportunities between members
54 • January 2026 • Cleaner Times
at the distributor/supplier/manufacturer levels, and strengthening benefits of membership through strategic partnerships and affiliations are among the ways that the association will help members grow, explains Reiffer. And it will endeavor to get the word about all programs out to the widest group. Disseminating information through social media channels, regular newsletters, and pages in this magazine is important and will continue, says Reiffer. He adds that communication to boost the association goes well beyond regular meetings of board members. The board of directors meets regularly as do members of subcommittees. And they often field questions from CETA members via phone and email. Person-to-person connections among the members of the association includes meetings between members—impromptu and scheduled—all arranged to work collectively and ultimately strengthen individual businesses. Reiffer expects more growth in the benchmarking program in 2026. “The program continues to gain more traction to help members grow their businesses and capitalize on new and existing opportunities.” Results from benchmarking can become input for refinement of
business planning. “Thanks to many great CETA sponsors, members can analyze strengths of their businesses and analyze weaknesses or seek new opportunities for growth,” says Reiffer. Benchmarking, the continuing education grant program, and the annual innovation award introduced in 2025 are among the many CETA initiatives that can be expected to keep growing. The award for innovation serves to highlight the ongoing research and development of manufacturers. Showcasing some of the results of innovation at the annual meeting serves as a reminder of all that’s happening in the realm of the positive. “Distributors and associate contract cleaning members benefit through exciting new cleaning technology, sales growth, and efficiency thanks to continuous improvement and innovation,” says Reiffer. The continuing education grant program helps defray the cost of training and certification. “Grants enable members to ease the financial burden of seeking training and/or certification for their employees,” explains Reiffer “As new business opportunities or pathways emerge, education is crucial for our members,” says Reiffer. The grants program acknowledges and supports the priority of continuing education.
COMMUNITY TIES
Sharing the load—both in the literal and figurative sense—is at the core of functions members of CETA tackle. There’s the physical work of contributing to the association—its committees, seminars, etc. There’s also the supporting contribution of being there as a colleague and collaborator—and possibly a competitor—and part of a group that acts on its shared interests. “CETA’s greatest strength has always been community,” says Rasmussen. “In uncertain times, information and collaboration become even more valuable, and CETA exists to provide both.” “Members gain access to real data, industry expertise, and peer insight that help transform uncertainty into action through the association’s programs and annual conference and trade show,” says Rasmussen. “When the environment around us is unpredictable, having measurable benchmarks and trusted relationships gives our members something solid to stand on,” says Rasmussen. CETA ensures no member need stand alone. In fact, efforts to modernize member engagement and data sharing are going full throttle. They include upcoming enhancements to the benchmarking and industry metrics program that “will allow participants to analyze trends faster and identify profit opportunities earlier,” says Rasmussen. “We’re also developing digital education modules and on-demand access to committee resources, making CETA’s knowledge base available yearround instead of just at conferences,” says Rasmussen. “The goal is simple: give our members timelier insight, more flexibility, and more ways to connect opportunity with action.” Being ready for anything in 2026 definitely means being ready to follow an opportunity borne of a challenge. Toward that end, the benchmarking program is a powerful tool, says Rasmussen. “It allows distributors and manufacturers to compare performance, uncover blind spots, and identify growth strategies based on real industry data.” The opportunities for in-person meetings as well as real-time updates on industry trends, regulatory developments, and product innovation combine to keep CETA members informed and current on issues affecting the industry and their businesses. That’s very important. But just as important, the many formal and informal activities help connect members with one another, says Rasmussen. “Many of our members have discovered new partnerships and ventures through CETA introductions and committee work.” Even with a community as solid as the one built of CETA members, there remains trepidation among some about what’s to come in 2026. Has Rasmussen as a company leader and a past president of CETA any advice to them to ease concern? “I’d tell them what I tell my own team, that the companies who stay informed, engaged, and adaptable will always find opportunity in challenge,” says Rasmussen. “The strength of CETA lies in its people: business owners, manufacturers, and service professionals who believe in learning from one another.” Know what can be controlled. And determine to control it. “We can’t control economic cycles, but we can control our readiness,” explains Rasmussen. Participating in the CETA community in all ways possible “gives members the tools and perspective to weather anything that comes.” Keep up to date with CETA via CETA.org. Not a member yet? The website is also the entryway to joining. Already a member? It’s not too early to mark the calendar for PowerClean® 2026, which will be held in Orlando, Florida, October 9–11, 2026, at the Rosen Shingle Creek Hotel. CT Cleaner Times • January 2026 • 55
DISTRIBUTOR OUTLOOK
HUMAN CONNECTION IS WELCOME by Diane M. Calabrese

he future looks bright. The future looks bleak. History repeats itself. Or choose another cliché. We tap pithy summations to express hope, worry, certitude, or equilibrium when we have no idea what will unfold. And current economic conditions have many reaching for solace in a platitude. Is there any certainty for distributors? Yes, one. Whatever turbulence there is in the economy, end users of products welcome human connection. There’s a reason YouTube videos on how to service a machine or use a chemical continue to multiply: A person-to-person, or video-to-person, contact is highly valued. True, anyone can submit an AI query and get instructions on finding what’s disrupting a machine’s performance and learn how to fix the machine. But the most honest brokers among the YouTube contributors state firmly when a repair is not do-ityourself (DIY). As 2026 begins, perhaps one of the most sought-after entities is a service center that does repairs, completing them in an expeditious way. The distributorship with a service center is a highly-valued place. Even better are distributors that send service team members to jobsites, but in many parts of the country, traveling service technicians have become a fantasy. The outlook for distributors tightly linked to their customers ought to be excellent. Besides repairs, such distributors provide customization of equipment and ancillaries, quick turnaround on parts, speedy repairs, and routine maintenance. And yes, those that can offer service calls to sites get top marks. Some of the turbulence being experienced across the economy can be explained by the speed at which change is happening. Among the actions that enable distributors to keep pace is an openness to new products (and equipment). “As with most industries, it is very important to diversify your service or product for the industry you work in,” says Aaron Raymond, owner of Deco Products Inc. in Denver, CO. “Most industries are not recession proof and need to have a backup plan just in case.” In many instances a backup plan coincides with a growth plan. That’s because both consider what can be done next given the context of what’s happening in the present. “Our R&D department is continuously evaluating new products and working with our suppliers for markets to expand into,” says Raymond. “Currently we are working with one of our distributors on a specialty coating for the direct-to-metal industry as well as a coating for TPO [thermoplastic polyolefin] tapes in the oil industry.” Besides being durable, TPO has many properties that make it a welcome addition to environmentally sustainable practices. As such, it fits well with a significant societal initiative, sustainability. TPO is just one of many forward-looking endeavors in the works. “We also plan on releasing a new 1K [one-coat] garage floor coating in 2026 to expand our customer reach to the homeowner or commercial building industry,” explains Raymond. New products and innovative products are essential to bolstering a positive outlook for distributors. In the case of the 1K coating, Cleaner Times • January 2026 • 57
the single application—with no mixing—meets one of the criteria that may customers use when evaluating a product. And that is ease of use.
KEEP MOVING
58 • January 2026 • Cleaner Times
Adjust for, move along with, or get ahead of one change, and another will soon emerge. “Nothing stays the same and will change again soon enough, so just do what you can and move forward,” says Linda Chambers, brand and sales manager at GCE/Soap Warehouse Brand in Norcross, GA. Is there one key to thriving in the 2026 economy? “Not really since no one has a crystal ball,” says Chambers. “We just look at past sales numbers and try to order soon enough in large enough quantities to hopefully meet our customers’ needs,” explains Chambers. “We have had to pivot to different vendors from past years due to their own issues in keeping inventories stable, and some customers have had to change to other brands or
slightly different versions of items when the ones they have been used to getting become unavailable.” The sales numbers inform the changes that enable a company to successfully maneuver across rough patches. “Adapting is the only way to move forward,” explains Chambers. That adaptation includes being ready to act on new opportunities in 2026. Preparation includes keeping the focus on customers. That means retaining a firm commitment to quality. “We look for and use alternative vendors and products that can still fulfill our customers’ needs even if it most likely will be at a higher price point right now due to tariffs,” says Chambers. “But we also are switching to other vendors, including new ones, to get the lowest price we can while still offering only high-quality products.” Although the business climate at the beginning of a new year might
seem less than hospitable, there are reasons for optimism. “There are still new contractors coming in to fill the places of those who are retiring or just getting out for their own reasons,” says Chambers. “At one point this summer we got an order of 20 cold-water units in and sold 12 in just one week—most to single, new guys just starting out,” says Chambers. “There are still plenty of jobs for those who want to do the available work, but some are realizing they must be willing to change lanes to be where the work is.” The shifts that contractors make serve as indicators to distributors regarding how they should reconfigure or add to their product lines. That means evaluating the broad range of services cleaning contractors now provide. “Whether it is putting up holiday lights for the season or moving inside and working at night for exhaust cleaning, what is needed by contractors in
every area can change for many reasons,” explains Chambers. One of the reasons is the local economic climate. Not every region is the same. Contractors know they must understand the service needs of their area. And distributors, in turn, must know what the contractors’ needs are. “We constantly watch what the industry is coming out with and what customers are looking for and talking about online,” says Chambers. “We try and have what is hot that contractors are looking for.” The snapshot of what contractors want is just that, an instant captured in time. “It is always changing,” says Chambers. “The great new shooter tip or gun that comes out and everyone wants this month may just end up sitting on the shelf less than six months from now; so you need to be sure you do not purchase too much, or you may be stuck with money sitting on a rack,” explains Chambers.

BEST PRACTICES
Never abandon what has been working just because of an uncertain outlook. Review and refine instead. “I think the best thing that dealerships can do is run their businesses in good times like they would in bad times,” says Greg Sprunk, president of Superior Cleaning Equipment Inc. in Phoenix, AZ. “Becoming more efficient, watching costs, having a good stock of inventory, and making sure that you have a great team of people is the best way to get prepared for the future.” The basics remain constant. “Understanding cash flow, having reserves, and being personally fiscally responsible so that whatever comes at you, you can handle,” are always essential, says Sprunk. Experience helps distributors maintain a positive outlook, explains Sprunk. “Almost 35 years of running a business and making a lot of mistakes, unfortunately or fortunately,
60 • January 2026 • Cleaner Times
gives you a lot of wisdom to hopefully not make the same ones.” The wisdom gained applies to new tools. “This is a great business,” says Sprunk, who sees a bright future and has no concerns about the ascendence of AI. “AI will only help us; it is not a competition for us, and the customer base that we serve needs us,” explains Sprunk. “Technology will only help us solve internal and customer issues faster.” Internal alignment of team members may change, along with products. And expenditures may have to be modified. “But the good operators will always do well like in any business, and the ones who don’t adhere to good business principles, or have good ethics as well as understanding of their numbers, will not prosper,” says Sprunk. He adds that this is an “exciting time” to be a business owner. “We are constantly looking at new technologies, software, and
innovation to help us do more with less,” says Sprunk. At every juncture the crucial bridge that distributors build between manufacturer and end user remains foremost. “A strong focus on service and investing in your service techs and having a good ecosystem, including competent parts managers and CSRs to support them, is essential so you in turn can give the customer the best experience possible,” says Sprunk. “I think the current administration is doing many things well,” says Sprunk. “Some things need to be rectified, like tariffs, but from a business standpoint we are in much better shape than we were before in terms of business climate, lower interest rates coming, immigration policy, and more fiscal responsibility.” Emphasize the human connection, roll with the punches and keep moving forward, and review and refine your business procedures. All these practices point to a positive outlook. CT

SMALL BUSINESS OWNER GUIDE:
COMMON DEDUCTIONS TO TAKE ADVANTAGE OF by Ian C. Perry and Roman A. Basi
E
very year tax law changes. For business owners it is important to stay up to date with the latest rules and regulations in your industry. One of the biggest items that business owners rely on is tax deductions. These deductions can lower your taxable income and, therefore, reduce your tax liability. Some deductions have remained the same for ages while others have changed recently. We will discuss the most common tax deductions for business owners and the corresponding rules for the 2025 tax year. Many small business owners are able to qualify for the Qualified Business Income (QBI) deduction. This allows eligible taxpayers to deduct up to 20 percent of their QBI, plus 20 percent of qualified real estate investment trust (REIT) dividends and qualified publicly traded partnership income. QBI is the net amount of qualified items of income, gain, deduction, and loss from any qualified trade or business, including income from partnerships, S corporations, sole proprietorships, and certain trusts. This generally includes the deductible part of self-employment tax, self-employed health insurance, and deductions or contributions to qualified retirement plans. A qualified trade or business is any section 162 trade or business, with the following three exceptions: 1. A trade or business conducted by a C corporation. 2. For taxpayers with taxable income that exceeds the threshold amount, specified services trades or businesses (SSTBs). An SSTB is a trade or business involving the performance of services in the fields of health, law, accounting, actuarial science, financial services, investing and investment management, trading, dealing in certain assets, or any trade or business whose principal asset is the reputation or skill of one or more of its employees or owners.
For 2025, the threshold amount is $394,600 for a married couple filing a joint return, and $197,300 for all other taxpayers. The SSTB limitations don’t apply to taxpayers with taxable income at or below the threshold amount. Limitations are phased in for joint filers with taxable income between $394,600 and $494,600, and all other taxpayers with taxable income between $197,300 and $247,300. For later years, the threshold amounts and phase-in range will be adjusted for inflation. 3. Performing services as an employee. Business meals are something that every business owner has run into. Whether it is taking a client out to eat or hosting a holiday party for the office, these business meals for employees and clients can be taxdeductible. There was a temporary 100 percent deduction for business meals in 2021 and 2022. Since 2023, the meal deduction has moved back to 50 percent for most situations. Some examples of meals and their deductions are as follows: • Business meals with clients (50 percent) • Office snacks and other food items (50 percent) • The cost of meals while traveling for work (50 percent) • Lunch out with less than half of the company employees (50 percent) • Food for company holiday parties (100 percent) • Food and beverages given out for free to the public (100 percent) • Dinner for employees working late at the office (100 percent) With a massive growth in working remotely, the home office deduction is being utilized now more than ever. Self-employed workers, contractors, freelancers, and telecommuters sometimes require a home office to conduct business duties. Business owners who use a home office for business may be able to deduct
expenses tied to the creation and maintenance of the workplace. To qualify, the taxpayer must utilize part of the home “regularly and exclusively” for business. You can calculate the deduction two different ways: actual expenses or the simplified method. You may also deduct expenses that are indirect or direct. Indirect expenses must be deducted based on the portion of the home being used as a home office. Some examples of these include utility bills, general repairs, and homeowner’s insurance. Examples of direct expenses may include designated phone lines, paint, and long-distance calls. For a vehicle that is used strictly for business purposes, any costs associated with that vehicle are taxdeductible under certain circumstances. You can deduct 100 percent of the costs of a business vehicle that is a car, SUV, pickup truck, or van. It is important to keep records, and if the vehicle happens to be used for both business and personal use, the costs must be split based upon actual mileage. Some examples of deductions can include insurance, maintenance/repair costs, registration fees, and toll/parking fees. Finally, let’s take a look at advertising and marketing costs. In the eyes of the federal government, small business advertising and marketing efforts qualify as fully tax deductible. This is only applicable if the actual expenses are considered ordinary, reasonable, and necessary. One hundred percent of eligible costs are deductible. Some examples include influencer marketing, TV and newspaper advertising costs, and the cost of producing advertising materials such as business cards, flyers, etc. Being a small business owner does not have to be complicated. The professionals at The Center have decades of experience in helping small business owners meet their goals. In 2024 Hurricane Milton and the subsequent tornadoes caused extensive damage to Nilfisk’s HPW manufacturing facilities, severely disrupting operations. As Nilfisk restructured to rebuild and strengthen its core vacuum and floor care business, PSI recognized a unique opportunity to preserve the HPW Division’s legacy and bring renewed energy to its brands. A Shared Commitment to Craftsmanship and Integrity Pressure-Pro and Hydro Tek are known worldwide for their reliability, performance, and innovation. Pressure-Pro has built a reputation for durable, high-efficiency, cold-water pressure washers while Hydro Tek has become synonymous with premium hot-water systems and meticulous engineering.
Both embody the same craftsmanship, customer commitment, and business ethics that define PSI. “Both Pressure-Pro and Hydro Tek were founded on principles of quality and service that align perfectly with PSI’s own moral compass,” says Paul Lewis of Pressure Systems Innovations. “We’ve long respected the vision of each original founder, and this acquisition is about preserving their legacy while ensuring the future of these exceptional brands.” Continuity, Stability, and Future Growth PSI will continue operations at the existing HPW facilities, ensuring a seamless transition for employees, distributors, and customers alike. The company has reaffirmed its commitment to the current staff and to maintaining the same standards of excellence that customers have come to trust. “PSI’s goal is not disruption but continuation and enhancement,” adds Lewis. “Existing and future customers will experience the utmost in support, service, and innovation as we integrate the HPW brands into the PSI family.” About Pressure Systems Innovations Pressure Systems Innovations (PSI) is a U.S.-based manufacturer specializing in professional cleaning systems, surface equipment, and engineered pressure solutions. GET INVOLVED

PWNA OUTLOOK 66 • January 2026 • Cleaner Times
M
acro or micro or something in between; which world view applies? It depends. Most of us develop our outlook by balancing the big picture with our own situation. The quest for equilibrium can lead to reactions ranging from euphoria to anxiety. Either way, we can expend a lot of energy and still not do what needs to be done: something. In the context of doing, Clint Reynolds, the president of PWNA [Power Washers of North America] gets right to the heart of the matter. He gives micro advice that applies to the macro world. “What’s the most powerful thing a contractor can do in 2026?” says Reynolds. “Get involved.” Naturally, a good place for a power-washing contractor to engage is with PWNA. Besides serving as the current president of the organization, Reynolds and his wife Jennifer Reynolds lead HydroTech Solutions LLC in Lake Mary, FL. Sustainable, environmentally friendly methods are built into the protocols that guide Reynolds’s company, which is PWNA certified. With its approach to cleaning, the company exemplifies the balance that can be achieved between running a profitable company and contributing to the community. Will balance be more difficult in 2026? Almost certainly. Will it be impossible? No. “Between shifting regulations, economic fluctuations, and emerging technologies, contractors in the power washing industry are staring into a year that feels both promising and unpredictable,” say Reynolds. “At PWNA, we believe that uncertainty doesn’t have to mean instability.’ Obstacles invite us to find a workaround. That’s the outlook that carried Apollo 13 back to Earth and demonstrated how imagination and critical thinking complement each other. “In fact, with the right tools and community, challenges become spring-
boards,” says Reynolds. He adds that PWNA will continue to help members not just survive in the new year but also succeed. Those most likely to be able to realize the full benefit of a springboard— and do what 2026 requires of them to succeed—have worked consistently to maintain strength and to be flexible. Reynolds tells us more about the many ways that PWNA will help its members realize success in the new year. To begin with, the organization will be sure that members have the confidence they need to move across rough patches. “PWNA is built for moments like this,” says Reynolds. “Our four-pillar foundation—education, networking, compliance, and advocacy—is designed to support contractors when the road gets bumpy.” There’s nothing like having a built-in repository of knowledge to instill confidence. True, AI assists are as close as a digital device, but for a second imagine a world where devices are all offline. Need motivation? Recall the way that commander Jim Lovell used a pencil to plot the successful return course for Apollo 13. “Whether it’s through expanded safety training, regulatory updates, or hands-on learning at conventions and regional events, our organization’s resources ensure that members stay sharp, safe, and several steps ahead,” explains Reynolds. “In uncertain times, access to accurate information and a trusted community can make all the difference.” PWNA delivers both accurate information and a trusted community all while keeping pace with changes and adapting to meet them. Reynolds says there is a new initiative from the organization that ought to be watched. It is Enterprise Membership (EM), which was launched in 2025 and is expected to “hit its stride” in 2026. What’s the essence of the new membership? All-in-one. “This all-inone membership allows businesses
to onboard their entire team under one umbrella, gaining instant access to PWNA’s full suite of power washing and window cleaning certifications, compliance tools, and safety education, including mobile access via the PWNA app,” explains Reynolds. “From daily inspection checklists, an SDS library, and safety manual to OSHA-compliant
RESPOND TO UNCERTAINTY WITH ACTION. “IF YOU FEEL UNCERTAIN, LET IT PUSH YOU TO INVEST IN EDUCATION, EXPAND YOUR NETWORK, AND STRENGTHEN YOUR BUSINESS WITH RESOURCES THAT PWNA PROVIDES,” SAYS REYNOLDS. “NOW IS NOT THE TIME TO GO IT ALONE,” SAYS REYNOLDS. “IT’S THE TIME TO GROW TOGETHER.” training, members can empower their teams anytime, anywhere.” EM melds the objective of ensuring consistency and competency of team members with the power of digital communication. “It’s not just about checking boxes; it’s about building future-ready crews,” explains Reynolds. New programs must be added in a thoughtful way, and existing programs must be made as strong as possible. “Leveraging existing programs for growth stands as an ongoing commitment for the organization in the new year,” says Reynolds. “PWNA continues to raise the bar—adding window Cleaner Times • January 2026 • 67
cleaning training, holiday lighting, and business development courses.” The business development courses include “new content on marketing, financial key performance indicators such as KPIs, and profitability strategies,” explains Reynolds. “Our existing training is updated on a regular basis with recent updates on house washing, roof cleaning, and fleet washing.” Learning opportunities extend far beyond the rich course offerings. “Let’s not forget our conventions remain a powerful hub for learning, networking, and vendor partnerships, helping members discover new revenue streams, tools, and innovations,” says Reynolds. The next PWNA convention will be held in Orlando, FL, February 18–20, 2026. Visit the PWNA.org website to learn more about it as well as the other dimensions of the organization discussed here. Which is requisite for the other? Staying informed or staying competitive?
68 • January 2026 • Cleaner Times
There is no need to wrestle with such a philosophical dilemma. Staying informed and staying competitive are two parts of a whole. “PWNA keeps members in the loop through newsletters, social media updates, and committeedriven communication strategies,” says Reynolds. “Whether it’s a new EPA rule, a safety best practice, or an emerging market trend, we ensure that members are always informed and empowered to act.” The best-informed and bestprepared power-washing professional can still be stumped now and then. Perhaps it’s just the need for a second opinion on an ambiguous local regulation (there are many) or the like. Simply reach out if in doubt, says Reynolds. “Our board of directors and committees, from membership to vendor to education, are member run and member focused.” It’s not only about getting a question answered but also about the community
that is formed by members. “You’re never navigating alone,” says Reynolds. Moreover, Reynolds emphasizes the point in the broadest context in a message to members who feel uncertain about 2026: “You’re not alone, and you’re not without support.” Uncertainty sometimes seems to be coming from all directions as 2026 begins. Global conflict, vacillating economic indicators, and societal change are a few of the causes. “PWNA was founded in 1992 to be the backbone of the power washing profession,” says Reynolds. “In good times and tough ones, we stand by our members with actionable tools, strong advocacy, and a growing network of industry leaders who are walking the same path.” Respond to uncertainty with action. “If you feel uncertain, let it push you to invest in education, expand your network, and strengthen your business with resources that PWNA provides,” says Reynolds.
“Now is not the time to go it alone,” says Reynolds. “It’s the time to grow together.”
POTENCY OF PROFESSIONAL ORGANIZATIONS
Growth during a time when clarity is almost a fantasy might seem a remote possibility. But the prevailing conditions may be those that signal enormous growth. We sometimes overlook the vast amount of scholarly work that has been done to bring coherence to the vagaries of the world. The utility of professional organizations has long interested scholars, and some of their results should interest us. For instance, in 1945 Ben W. Miller published a paper titled “The Role of the Professional Organizations” in The Journal of Health and Physical Education (vol. 16 no. 10). The first sentence of his paper contained the well-known refrain that “the future is what we make of it.” Miller was writing at a time—the year World War II ended—when despite the good feelings over the war’s end, questions about what would happen next in the economic, societal, and governmental realms prevailed. He advocated that the concerned members of society not retreat to individual pursuits but instead join with others who had shared interests. (He recalled the time following World War I when there was just such a retreat, which is a phenomenon many scholars have described.) Miller believed professional associations were critical to helping society move ahead—move ahead despite the many problems that stirred in the United States at the end of the war. We cannot attribute all the growth in industry, the supplies of housing, the boost to health and education, etc. that occurred during the 1950s to professional organizations; but the organizations helped focus the energy of their members, and the energy gave a lift to communities.
The enormous benefit provided by professional organizations in the consolidation, distillation, and dissemination of information required by their members can make us forget another large benefit: Professional organizations diffuse knowledge. The organizations do so by expanding boundaries. Consequently, some scholars label them boundary spanners. For example, a professional meeting of power washing contractors
may include vendors of equipment or chemicals the contractors use. The vendors in turn have their own organization. A boundary spanned at a conference may ignite a change in a method or a machine that leads to technological advancement and helps society do more with less— water, energy, and time. Professional organizations are potent forces for good. That’s certainty. CT

FINANCIAL
TAX TRAPS AND HOW TO AVOID THEM by Mark E. Battersby
T
he One Big Beautiful Bill Act (OBBBA) extended the statute of limitations for many tax provisions, making it more important than ever to be aware of the many “traps” in our tax laws—new and old. After all, accidentally failing into one of those “traps” can leave every pressure cleaning business—and their owners—open to possible penalties and fines.
EMPLOYEE OR INDEPENDENT CONTRACTOR
A good example of one potentially expensive trap involves the operation’s work force. Misclassifying employees as independent contractors continues to be a trap for unwary pressure washing businesses. When hiring workers, it’s essential to understand the difference between employees who are subject to payroll taxes and benefits and independent contractors who are not. Worker misclassification not only makes the operation a prime target for audits; it also can trigger back payroll tax liabilities, penalties, and interest. Fortunately, use of the IRS’s common-law test and its updated “gig” economy factors can help avoid this trap. Keeping detailed information about a worker’s other customers, contracts, etc. may support the independent contractor label. When in doubt, treat the worker as an employee or seek legal consultation.
CORRECT AND ECONOMICAL BUSINESS ENTITY TRAPS
The structure used to conduct business is already in place, but is it the entity that will produce the lowest tax bills and most liability protection for its owners? Choosing the original business structure, e.g., sole proprietorship, LLC, S, or regular corporation, may have been done without considering all of the tax implications. Or the everchanging tax rules may make switching entities today worthwhile. Tripping over the S corporation limits on the number of owners is another potential trap as is ignoring the so-called LLC “loophole” where
the pressure cleaning business is treated as a pass-through entity. Both can be expensive if not avoided.
RECORD FAILURES
Failing to maintain accurate and detailed financial records, especially receipts and invoices, makes it difficult to remember—and substantiate— deductions. Without substantiation, not only can deductions be disallowed but also tax bills, penalties, and fines can increase. Either digital or paper records can prove business purpose, amounts, dates, and recipients as well as make audits less stressful and less expensive.
UNPAID PAYROLL TAXES
Unpaid payroll taxes have long been an expensive trap. All employers are required to deposit all taxes withheld from an employee’s wages as well as the operation’s share of those taxes. As businesses collect these taxes throughout the year, the law requires them to be submitted to the IRS on a quarterly, monthly, or biweekly basis. When any business collects payroll taxes from its employees but fails to remit those funds to the IRS on time and in full, it is vulnerable to harsh penalties and even possible jail time. What’s worse, it is not only the business that can be held responsible for unpaid payroll taxes by the IRS. Everyone from the operation’s bookkeeper or owner to shareholders are potentially responsible.
IGNORED INCOME
Failing to report or underreporting the pressure washing operation’s business income, whether it is received in cash, checks, via online platforms, or through third-party payments, is a major audit trigger and could lead to civil fraud charges. Form 1099-K helps both the pressure washing business and the IRS track all taxable income accurately. Form 1099K is a report of payments received for goods or services during the year. Digital payment apps such as PayPal and Venmo must issue 1099-Ks to users who received over $20,000 in
gross payments and have more than 200 transactions. Not too surprisingly, forgetting to report this income can trigger substantial penalties. Avoiding this potential trap simply means tracking all income received through third-party payment platforms or from credit, debit, or stored value cards, such as gift cards (payment cards) and payment apps or
STATE AND LOCAL INCOME TAXES, SALES AND USE TAXES, TRANSFER TAXES, GROSS RECEIPT TAXES, AND MORE ARE OFTEN OVERLOOKED. A PRESSURE CLEANING BUSINESS OPERATING ACROSS MULTIPLE STATES MUST NAVIGATE A PATCHWORK OF DIFFERENT TAX LAWS, INCLUDING SALES TAX NEXUS AND WITHHOLDING REQUIREMENTS, WHICH CAN BE OVERWHELMING AND LEAD TO NONCOMPLIANCE IF OVERLOOKED. online marketplaces, also called thirdparty settlement organizations (TPSO).
IGNORED DEDUCTIONS
It’s no secret that quite a few taxpayers go overboard when searching for tax deductions. Unfortunately, finding too many business write-offs, making tax deductions up, and artificially enhancing existing write-offs to inflate expenses is increasing as the IRS’s audit figures go down. Naturally, not every cost can be claimed as a business expense. Nondeductible expenses such as personal or private expenditures unrelated to Cleaner Times • January 2026 • 71
the business, fines, or penalties, including traffic or parking fines, are rarely deductible. The bottom line is all deductions must be “ordinary and necessary” and related to the business. Otherwise, if the IRS catches the business claiming false deductions, penalties could be the following: • 20 percent of the disallowed amount for filing false claims • $2,500 if the IRS determines a frivolous tax return was involved.
And, remember, there is no statute of limitations for fraudulent tax returns.
HOME OFFICE OR SHOP
Operating the pressue cleaning business from home or merely taking work home can open the door to yet another trap. The home office, shop, or studio may be invaluable but requires strict “regular and exclusive use.” Properly reported, the home office deduction can reduce taxable income.
However, claiming a home-office deduction without meeting the tax criteria can trigger audits and disallowed deductions. Avoiding home office tax traps means the following: • Confirm the workspace is used regularly and exclusively for business if it is not the principal place of business. • Decide beforehand whether to use the simplified method ($5 per square foot up to 400 square feet) or the actual expense method (pro rata share of expenses such as mortgage interest, utilities, insurance, repairs, etc.) • Keep photos, floor plans, and a log of business activity in the space. • If the work space is shared with personal use, avoid claiming the deduction.
PERSONAL OR BUSINESS
Mixing personal and business finances is an all-too-common error. Using a single bank account or credit card for all expenses makes it difficult to distinuish legitimate business costs from personal expenses. This can cause errors in claiming deductions and raise audit red flags. Mixing personal and business expenses or claiming deductions that aren’t allowed blurs the line between personal expenses, which are not deductible; invites scrutiny; and may make it more difficult to plan for the future. While it can be tempting to use one bank account or one credit card for all expenditures, doing so can make it difficult to tell legitimate business expenses from personal ones. Using a separate business bank account and a business credit card can prevent scrutiny and potential audits and help with an operation’s financial planning.
THE OBBBA AND THE QBI
The OBBBA (One Big Beautiful Bill Act) made the deduction for Qualified Business Income (QBI) permanent, allowing a 20 percent deduction from the income of small businesses such as sole proprietorships, partnerships, and S corporations. 72 • January 2026 • Cleaner Times
While making the 20 percent deduction for QBI permanent, the new law also added new restrictions such as a $5 million gross receipts cap and stricter phaseout for so-called “Specified Service Trades or Businesses.” Failure to follow the complex wage and property limits means the deduction may be lost. Working with a tax professional to ensure all eligibility requirments are met for the QBI deduction is a good way to avoid this tax trap.
74 • January 2026 • Cleaner Times
DON’T OVERLOOK STATE AND LOCAL TAX TRAPS
State and local income taxes, sales and use taxes, transfer taxes, gross receipt taxes, and more are often overlooked. A pressure cleaning business operating across multiple states must navigate a patchwork of different tax laws, including sales tax nexus and withholding requirements, which can be overwhelming and lead to noncompliance if overlooked.
Failure to register, collect, and remit sales tax in a state where the pressure washing operation has nexus can lead to back taxes, penalties, and interest. Ignoring the sales tax that might be due on the sale of a business is common as are the state-specific requirements for equipment sales and other buy-and-sell transactions.
AVOIDING TAX TRAPS—LEGALLY
Avoiding potential tax traps involves a number of tried-and-true strategies such as the following: • Separate finances—As mentioned, using bank accounts and credit cards dedicated strictly for business use separates personal and business expenses • Document everything—Keep detailed documentations such as receipts, invoices, and contemporaneous logs for all transactions that will be claimed as deductions • Labeling all income—Attempting to label a bank deposit or payments from third parties months after they occur can result in an IRS label of cash income whether the sums were for business or not • Be aware of common mistakes— Awareness can help tame the stress at tax time and ensure accurate reporting of the operation’s income and deductions. • Go paperless—Filing tax returns electronically can help avoid simple math errors and ensure timely submissions • Stay informed—Keep up to date with the ever-changing tax laws and regulations—federal, state, and local—or work with a professional who does. It is no secret that a pressure cleaning businesses’s taxes can be complicated. The IRS is increasing audits of businesses and high-income individuals, especially for those with income over $400,000. Obviously, keping good records, using accounting software, or seeking professional advice on a regular basis will help avoid potential tax traps. CT

SPRING ALWAYS FOLLOWS WINTER

here’s winter and economic winter. Economic winter is the metaphorical one. But contractors accustomed to dealing with meteorological winter may be among those most prepared for economic fluctuation. Whether it’s the economy or the air that’s cold, the chill brings some power washing to a halt. Contractors cope with winter by adding services. The strategy of adding services is a good one for a time of economic malaise. Having a house, deck, roof, driveway, or patio cleaned by a professional cannot be labeled a luxury. Yet when people are trimming household budgets, such cleaning gets shunted to the non-necessity column. Absolute necessity? It’s the evaluation individuals make when cutting their expenditures. Contractors aiming to retain a positive outlook—thanks to a steady flow of customers—use a parallel analysis. Which services will customers be willing to pay for when times are difficult? We will get back to the “which services” question in the next section. There’s another question a contractor should be able to answer first: Am I doing enough to find jobs? For instance, a contractor should not simply look at the economy and assume that fewer requests for service means that no one wants service. Take the initiative. “One of the ways to navigate tough times is to have constant contact with our customers through email, text, and calls to see if they want to get on schedule for a cleaning,” says John Tornabene, owner, Clean County Powerwashing in Kings Park, NY. “This works at any time, even if the year will have rough patches or be unpredictable.” No matter what the economic climate, be certain that readiness defines the company. “Be ready to roll out to get the job done that may fall on your lap out of nowhere,” says Tornabene. Many contractors may discount the likelihood of getting jobs for
residential cleaning during the deepest part of winter. They may even winterize and store most of their equipment, but not every residential cleaning job can wait until spring. For instance, people put their homes on the market in all seasons. Some may need to sell as fast as possible. Add the urgency to a dirty house, and the result is usually a realtor looking for a contractor who can get out on a day when the ambient temperature rises above freezing to clean the house’s exterior. Clean exteriors may not matter to prospective buyers as much as to realtors who do not want their names attached to a less-thanattractive property. Tornabene says that contractors must always have a positive outlook irrespective of ups and downs in the economy. “And never waver in your determination to get the job at hand completed.” Determination and positive outlook are two sides of the same coin. They reinforce each other. More businesspeople determined to do what it takes to keep things moving—and reject succumbing to sluggishness—create movement in the economy. The movement elevates outlook. There are reasons to be optimistic about the current business climate, says Tornabene. “It starts with the leaders who are at the top of government, whether it is at the national or local level, who work tirelessly for the people they represent to bring opportunity back to them.” A contractor’s responsibility to his or her business is to continue to plan and pursue. That includes the introduction of new approaches and strategies. Tornabene has committed to a strategic change that will continue in the new year. “We started to get more parking garages to be power washed and swept on multi-year contracts this year and plan on adding much more of them for 2026.” Ardent doing at the regional level a contractor serves stands as one component of maintaining a positive Cleaner Times • January 2026 • 77
outlook. The other is involvement with other contractors—yes, competitors in some cases. Tornabene says that contractors should ask themselves a question: “Would attending industry conventions and events in 2026 be helpful for your company in a potentially unpredictable year?” And Tornabene answers his own question in the affirmative. “Yes, absolutely, not only because the knowledge you can gain from attending such events could keep you ahead of the curve by giving you a leg up on your competition, but also because of some of the networking and friendships you can make there,” he says. Priceless is the descriptor Tornabene uses to describe the networking and friendships. A positive takeaway to be sure.
ANSWERS TO “WHICH”
It might seem that prospective customers who have paused having their decks washed are also going to skip having holiday lights installed, but that’s an assumption that requires more thought. The uplift that homeowners receive from the holidays means that many will continue with traditions. They may not see holiday lights as a necessity, but they will not cut them from their budget. Holiday light installation (and removal and storage) is just one of the add-on services that keep power washing contactors busy across 12 months a year. Another is gutter cleaning. When tapping relationships with their clients, power washing contractors who clean gutters can remind customers why gutters should be cleaned. Talk about safety for the homeowner who avoids a DIY fall and care of the integrity of a home that’s less likely to suffer structural damage from ice dams. In short, customers will find the money to pay for something that’s important. The “something” includes celebration, safety, and preservation. Add-ons in winter may include snow removal. Many contractors do attach 78 • January 2026 • Cleaner Times
plow blades to pickups and contract to clean commercial parking lots. Think through any add-on service before offering it. Snow removal illustrates the point. Will insurance in place cover liability for running into a car? Will work be on retainer for the commercial property owner, or will the contractor only be paid if it snows? How difficult will it be to meet the hours required to ensure the lots are passable when the property owner expects them to be? Hospitals and grocery stores typically want contractors to be out removing snow as it falls. Taking multiple jobs will make that impossible. A contractor might best add snow removal work by subcontracting with an established snow removal company. Snow removal may not be the best addition to services offered. There may be too little or too much to make it profitable. Still, snow removal takes us into the realm of commercial work. In slow economic times, contractors that take on a mix of residential and commercial jobs have more resilience. It takes a great deal of preparation to be ready to bid on or respond to a request for proposals (RFP) from a commercial entity. Insurance and certification requirements will be outlined by the property owner. Contractors determined to grow their companies to long-lived and prosperous enterprises must consider which kinds of services will make that possible. To be profitable long-term residential cleaning often must be expanded to gated communities, apartment complexes, or other commercial home sites. Any commercial or government entity will expect documentation of a contractor’s certifications, insurance, and relevant credentials (e.g., portfolio). As difficult as any slow time during a complex economic period may be, it can be made better by using it to complete certification requirements needed to take on new kinds of work. It’s simple to get a sense of what responding to a government RFP
entails by reading a few RFPs. Federal, state and local governments must make their solicitations available (at least if they exceed a threshold dollar amount). The state of Florida makes it very easy to find open RFPs through a dedicated website. Other states do the same, although some of their website query systems are not as streamlined. The easiest way to get to RFPs issued by a state is to use a search engine and query with something like “Georgia [or another state], government contracts, RFPs, power washing, pressure washing.” There are consolidators that offer access to government RFPs for a price. Going through them isn’t necessary. And especially for educational purposes, just use the free access path. Weathering the storm, surviving winter…we know the euphemisms for slow economic times. A slow period imperils the bottom line. It can, however, be an excellent time to learn and to ensure all equipment and ancillaries are in excellent condition. With more credentials, good equipment, and acute knowledge of the sorts of customers (private and government) looking for power washing services, a contractor will be prepared to respond to opportunities that come with an economic upturn. Preparation is always better than procrastination (or lament). Ideas for additions are everywhere. For example, the North American Industry Classification System (NAICS), which the federal government uses in census and other statistical data analyses, assigns power washing exterior services to NAICS code 561790 (other services to buildings and dwellings). Go to Census.gov to review all that’s lumped into the code. The review will generate plenty of ideas on additional services. Gutter cleaning is there. So, too, are chimney cleaning, sweeping driveways and parking lots, cleaning swimming pools, and many more. Spring always follows winter. CT
