HOPE FOR AMERICA

In early May 2026 Michael R. Strain of National Review reported on a conversation that took place between Secretary of State Marco Rubio and a reporter. The reporter asked, “What is your hope for America at a time such as this?”

The Secretary of State responded, My hope for America? It’s the same as it’s always been. We want [America] to continue to be the place where anyone from anywhere can achieve anything.

Where you’re not limited by the circumstances of your birth, by the color of your skin, by your ethnicity. But frankly, it’s a place where you are able to overcome challenges and achieve your full potential. I think in the U.S. we’re not perfect. Our history is not one of perfection.

But it’s still better than anybody else’s history. And ours is a story of perpetual improvement. Each generation has left the next generation of Americans freer, more prosperous, [America] is a unique and exceptional country. And as we come upon this 250-year anniversary, I think we have a lot to learn and be proud of in our history. It is one of perpetual and continuous improvement, where each generation has done its part to bring us closer to fulfilling the vision that the founders of this country had upon its founding.

As Strain points out, “Though he didn’t use the phrase, Rubio argued for the health of the American Dream. He affirmed American exceptionalism.”

We are celebrating 250 years since the Declaration of Independence was signed by 56 men from the 13 colonies. They spoke about why it was necessary for one people to dissolve their political ties to another and proclaimed several self-evident truths. And then they listed 27 grievances against the King of England. They appealed to the Supreme Judge of the world, declared their independence, and spent the next eight years fighting to secure this independence.

At Cleaner Times we believed it is worth highlighting our nation and this 250th anniversary of our independence. To that end, we share on page 6 the reasons several of our advertisers sent us for why they are proud to be Americans and what they will be doing to celebrate our freedoms on July 4, 2026. Several other articles in this issue share how they plan to celebrate America 250 or have manufactured patriotic products.

rought, market speculators, tariffs, and farmers in distress—is this a partial description of 2026? Perhaps.

But it’s also an accounting of some of the trials for the United States in 1876 or 100 years after the Declaration of Independence marked the beginning of the nation. So tumultuous was the time that the more than 20,000 Grange groups had turned from providing a social nexus for widely dispersed farm families to political activity.

In 1876 Ulysses Grant, our 18th president, had entered his last year of office.

Cabinet turnover and the gold scandal were among the many woes for Grant (and the nation).

Also in 1876 Grant’s successor, Rutherford Hayes, defeated Samuel Tilden by one electoral vote, and the result was disputed. Hayes placated his significant critics by ending the Civil War reconstruction period and then enjoyed a relatively quiet term as our 19th president.

Take any year in the history of the United States and find a record of tumult and tranquility, although the portion of each will vary. Consequently, looking back from the vantage of 250 years, we should not be surprised as we currently experience some of each.

It may seem we are a bit heavy on the tumult side right now. Yet maintaining perspective requires that we open a wide lens to view the whole picture.

“As we reflect on the 250th anniversary of the Declaration of Independence, I believe our nation can take pride in the spirit that has always driven it forward—resilience, hard work, faith, freedom, and the belief that ordinary people can build something meaningful,” says Clint Reynolds, owner with Jennifer Reynolds of Hydro-Tech Solutions LLC in Lake Mary, FL. This spirit manifests itself everywhere.

“In our industry we see that every day in small business owners, technicians, and families who work hard, serve their communities, and keep moving forward no matter the challenges,” says Reynolds.

“What gives me the most hope about the future of our nation is that the same spirit is still very much alive,” says Reynolds. “There is still opportunity here. There are people willing to work hard, innovate, serve others, and invest in the next generation. I believe the future remains bright when we continue to value faith, family, strong communities, and the freedom to create a life and business with purpose.”

STEPPING FORWARD

Any reflection on the past should embrace the adage “two steps forward, one step back.” The gains made in the United States across 250 years have included some steps back.

In 2026 the United States successfully began its Artemis program. The relaunch of lunar visit plans occurred after a pause that lasted 54 years.

Two hundred years on from 1776 in the year 1976, the United States had already seen its astronauts land on the moon (1969) and then abandon its Apollo program after the return of Apollo 17 in December 1972.

Gerald Ford was president in 1976.

The 38th president, Ford, served following resignations of the elected president (Richard Nixon) and vice president (Spiro Agnew).

On its 200th anniversary, the United States might have looked a bit shaky. Still in recovery mode from the Vietnam War and the conflict in Cambodia, the country had definitely taken a step back.

Moreover, political forces were pulling in many directions. Some congratulated themselves for causing a president to resign over cross-party political spying, which has permeated politics in the nation since its inception. Others fretted about the instability caused by changing leaders in such a way, especially in the context of the history of the nation, history that includes some of the same or worse in virtually every administration.

Two steps forward and one step back certainly applies. Such a trajectory makes happy reflection somewhat difficult.

Dennis Black, president of McHenry Pressure Cleaning Systems Inc. in Frederick, MD, tells us that he has concerns about the state of the nation. And for a time, he put aside our question about reflections to ponder the situation.

“I have always thought myself to be patriotic and proud of the country I belong to,” says Black. “I do hold onto the pride of where we came from and how we got here.”

And much more, explains Black.

“I also celebrate and honor the sacrifices of all the people and leaders of the past.”

Yet there is a bit more to the whole.

“I must be honest that it is difficult to have all those same feelings just described as I look forward,” says Black. “The political climate along with the overall feel does not present a good background for me as we celebrate.”

Indeed, Black’s concern goes deep.

“We seem to want to erase the past now, not learn from it. The backbone of hard work, ethics, and doing what is right seems to be a thing of the past.”

We can all imagine that others feel the same way, and others have felt the same way in 1876 and 1976 as well as at other 50-year intervals of reflection.

“I hope for the future, but I am not feeling that great about it,” says Black.

“I realize that change is inevitable and even necessary, but abandoning and forgetting what got us here does not provide any foundation for the future,” explains Black. “My wish is that we as a country can come together and celebrate this anniversary.”

And Black has an idea of how such welcome coalescence could happen.

“We must try to remember and honor how we got here as a country, recognize our mistakes, and learn from them. Hopefully if we can do this, it will provide good feelings and some basis to work with for the future.”

CROSSING OBSTACLES

Looking at the past can fortify us.

For instance, we can smile over some of the possible conspiracies that have captivated citizens, such as that concerning the death of our 29th president, Warren Harding, in 1923.

One of seven U.S. presidents born in Ohio, Harding was eventually nominated after a convention deadlock. He opposed the League of Nations, which proved a winning position. Considered mild-mannered, Harding suggested there would be what came to be called a “return to normalcy” after the war (WWI) that no one wanted.

When the seemingly fit Harding died suddenly at age 57, some thought the worst—an unnatural death.

Conspiratorial possibilities erupted, even though his was a natural death.

Normalcy was ultimately pushed aside during Harding’s tenure thanks to oil leases on federal land and bribery getting lumped together in the Teapot Dome Scandal.

Is it true that there have been no obstacles in 250 years? Just the opposite, in fact. Are there more today, or are they just of a different sort? Time will tell.

Hope is an essential part of overcoming difficulties. And Jeff Theis, president and CEO of ProPulse, a Schieffer Company, based in Peosta, IA, uses the word to sum up his reflection on 250 years.

“After World War II much of the world was left in ruins, but nations eventually rebuilt through cooperation, resilience, and hope,” says Theis. “Former enemies became allies, and societies worked toward peace and prosperity.”

As we write in May, the uncertainty in the Middle East looms large, and Theis brings it into consideration.

“Today’s tensions involving Iran create fear and uncertainty in a similar way that World War II did,” says Theis. “However, history shows that even after conflict and hardship, progress is possible.”

How is it possible? “Through diplomacy, understanding, and a commitment to peace, the future can still hold stability and opportunity,” says Theis.

Things change. History shows that there is hope for change that seems unlikely in the current moment.

“When one considers that our high-pressure cleaning industry as well as a lot of other business segments relied heavily on European technology as it evolved, it is hard to imagine the reality of World War II,” says Theis.

“It was not that long ago that it would have been impossible to think about the kind of cooperation that ensued,” explains Theis. “And so, such positive development in the aftermath of the war gives me hope for the future, not only for the United States but also for the Middle East region, and indeed for the rest of the world.”

The kind of transformation of interactions Theis recalls also characterizes the relation between the fledgling United States and the United Kingdom, which warred with each other not only in the American Revolutionary War (of Independence) but also in the War of 1812.

Reflections on the 250th anniversary of our nation might well include a look back to 1676 and all the parties with an interest in the land, the sea, and one another (e.g., the Native Americans and the French with notables such as Jacques Marquette, a Jesuit missionary and explorer; René-Robert Cavelier; Sieur de La Salle, an explorer and fur trader; plus the buccaneers—yes, piracy in the colonies).

It almost takes away one’s breath to recall all that has transpired on part of a single continent across 250 years. Go back 350 years and prepare to be spellbound.

There have been plenty of conflicts over tobacco, cotton, cattle, water rights, taxes, etc., but the country held together. CT Cleaner Times • July 2026 • 15

Making the

American Dream Come True

ast fall I received a call from a pressure washing dealer who was working to help a customer who was having trouble getting approved for financing for his business. This customer was a contractor who had been slowly building his business on the side since COVID. The contractor had been putting in nights and weekends on his side gig, honing his skills, and gaining a customer base.

When the dealer reached out to me, the contractor had an exciting opportunity in front of him. He had placed the winning bid on a contract that would make his pressure washing work his full-time job. The only missing piece was the equipment to handle the job.

On paper, it wasn’t a straightforward approval. The customer had already been turned down by other dealers and finance companies. Since he had been working the job on the

side, he had no commercial financing history to speak of, meaning most funding sources would not consider him “a business.” Even with the income coming in from his current side business plus the new contract in hand, he was not having luck finding a financing partner willing to invest in him.

When we took the time to listen to his story to see what he had been building and his industry experience, a different picture emerged. We chose to look forward with him, rather than just backward. We partnered with him to structure a solution that allowed him to obtain the rig he needed and accept the job. He went on to make his pressure washing a full-time operation; and, last I heard, he hasn’t looked back.

That is just one of many American stories. Over the years I’ve come to recognize something consistent about the people in this industry: they’re

dedicated, hard-working, and proud of a job well done. And, as America prepares to celebrate 250 years of independence and self-determination, it feels like exactly the right moment to talk about what the American Dream looks like from where I sit.

In my years of working within the pressure washing and cleaning industry, I’ve had the privilege of meeting some of the most knowledgeable, grounded, and passionate business owners I have ever encountered. These are not people who just stumbled into their work. They have refined and mastered their skills, and they take extraordinary pride in the results they deliver for customers.

It’s no wonder that pressure washing videos have gone viral on social media, or that there are now pressure washing influencers who have amassed large followings hungry for their content. There’s something deeply

satisfying about watching a surface transformed from filthy to restored.

Millions of viewers have discovered what people in this industry have always known: a well-executed cleaning job is a craft. It is skill made visible.

The dealers who support these contractors understand the importance of this craft. The best dealers are not simply selling equipment; they’re consultants, invested in their customers’ success and committed to putting the right tools in the right hands. They take as much pride as the contractor does in a clean surface and a job done well. That culture of genuine investment in outcomes, from the manufacturer, through the dealer sales floor, and all the way to the job site, is one of the things that makes this corner of American small business something worth celebrating.

This is the American Dream in its most tangible form. It’s not an abstract

ideal or a feel-good marketing slogan.

It’s the contractor loading a trailer before sunrise and the dealer who opened early (or stayed late) to help get them there. It’s the willingness to bet on yourself, the dedication to put in the hard work, and the pride to do it well. And, at 250 years in, that spirit is very much alive in this industry.

deas, prototypes, beta-testing, and yes, even competition fuel innovation.

Firsts are often difficult to declare with certainty because many inventors have ideas they don’t act upon, or they abandon one prototype project for a different project.

Not every great concept reaches final form immediately. Some never reach final form but still inspire others or save others from repeating a design that will not reach fruition.

Manufacturers commit to innovation because they want to ensure those who use their products achieve optimal outcomes. Even the tiniest change in a product can make a huge difference for the buyer.

The change might increase efficiency, conserve energy and/or water, or improve ergonomics. Recognizing the importance of any change that advances desired results for the user, CETA [Cleaning Equipment Trade Association] has expanded the categories in which members can compete for its Innovation Award in 2026.

Beginning this year, award categories include innovative components and accessories. The components and accessories will compete alongside pressure washers and softwash systems.

“This broader recognition encourages participation, rewards meaningful advancements at every level, and helps ensure the continued growth, relevance, and vitality of the association,” says Gus Alexander, the current president of CETA and the CEO of FNA Group in Pleasant Prairie, WI. Vitality is a word with many shades of meaning—strength, energy, and liveliness. And it’s the word Alexander chooses to describe the anticipated effect of expanding award categories.

“By expanding the Innovation Award categories beyond pressure washers and softwash machines into innovative components and accessories, it strengthens the vitality of CETA in several important ways,” says Alexander.

Start with the importance of enlarging the pool of potential competitors.

“We have broadened industry participation by recognizing components and accessories,” explains Alexander. “In doing so the award becomes relevant to a much larger portion of the industry.”

That larger portion includes “our suppliers, manufacturers, designers, and technology developers who may not produce complete machines but are driving meaningful innovation,” says Alexander.

The expansion of categories should prove as exciting as it is logical. “Many of the most impactful advancements in the cleaning industry come from smaller improvements such as smarter injectors, safer hose systems, improved reels, automation controls, battery technology, metering systems, and environmentally responsible accessories,” explains Alexander.

Incremental innovation is the way Alexander refers to it, and it’s one of the many facets of CETA that heralds the association’s forward movement.

“Herald” because the award raises the visibility of the day-to-day quest not only to keep the industry moving forward, but also to be part of keeping society moving forward. The adage “the little things add up” applies.

Many little things may not be noticed individually, but they are of immense importance to the greater whole of our industry and society.

Members of CETA who compete get a chance to do more than showcase their innovations.

Those who compete for an award for being innovative acknowledge the importance of competition done in a meaningful and collegial way. Often a reflection such as, “I wish our company had thought of that,” can catalyze an initiative on a different or an allied front of product development.

CETA is a leader in its industry. The Innovation Award amplifies that.

“The industry today values efficiency, ergonomics, sustainability, automation, and operator safety just as much as core machine performance,” says Alexander. “Recognizing these areas positions CETA as a leader shaping the future of the industry rather than simply celebrating traditional equipment categories.”

Celebrating is good, but it should be grounded in what has been, what is, and what’s on the horizon.

“The effectiveness of a cleaning system depends on accessories, pumps, nozzles, chemical delivery systems, controls, and supporting technologies working together,” says Alexander.

“Expanded award categories better reflect the complete ecosystem of professional cleaning equipment.”

Singling out one past innovation that has contributed to the development of our industry is impossible.

That’s not unexpected.

“The most remarkable innovation may be the industry’s continual ability to adapt, improve, and reimagine what is possible,” says Alexander.

“From advancements in pumps, burners, and chemical application systems to automation, environmental stewardship, and smarter accessory integration, each generation of innovation has created new opportunities for contractors, manufacturers, and distributors alike.”

Opportunities in every direction— additive, in parallel, and diverging.

“That is what makes the future so exciting,” says Alexander.

Ideas emerging now—possibly stimulated by an Innovation Award— are kindling for the future. “CETA is creating space to recognize not only today’s breakthroughs but also the ideas that may shape the next 35 years of the industry,” says Alexander.

Enthusiasm for a new venture— including an award—is always a good sign. And there is enthusiasm for the expansion of product line categories under which members can compete.

“The Innovation Award is one of the coolest new aspects to CETA” says Maxwell Baldwin, owner/ director of operations at Whisper Wash in St. Petersburg, FL. “The award itself is a testament to how far CETA has evolved.”

Baldwin says there’s real vigor to be gained by the competition the award invites. “The award itself showcases amazing products which are now expanding into components and accessories as well.”

More categories are most welcome.

“This expansion of categories creates more avenues for new products and different companies to be showcased,” says Baldwin. “I believe this has the ability to bring us closer as a community.”

Closer because? “It brings more recognition of the efforts of many great companies and how their teams can be acknowledged for pushing the limits and bringing new or refined technology to our industry,” explains Baldwin.

Many categories like many stars form a constellation—a beautiful result. “The expansion proves that as CETA, we are constantly growing and pushing forward—innovating, if you will,” says Baldwin.

“And the innovation and forward movement is what the majority of business is about, taking things to the next level,” says Baldwin; and “This award is a direct representation of that.”

A current board member and a committee member at CETA, Baldwin sees much represented by the award. “The award at its heart is that of commitment of spirit, integrity, and hard work of the members of the association,” he states.

There are so many reasons to anticipate PowerClean ® 2026 (Orlando, FL, October 8-11, Rosen Shingle Creek Resort)—the annual meeting and tradeshow of CETA, the Cleaning Equipment Trade Association. But now we have one more—an Innovation Award in its second year—which itself has already innovated with the expansion of categories for competitors.

Why not enter the competition?

The adage not to “hide one’s light under a bushel” certainly applies to those who remain uncertain.

An award for innovation brings recognition to the recipient. That’s a given.

Yet the recipient and fellow competitors bring recognition to all that’s transpiring in the industry.

Entering the competition for an award is an excellent way to contribute to the “vitality” (Alexander’s word) of the industry.

Air shows and air races were part of the aviation industry from its earliest days. If there’s any industry that validates how showcasing the results of innovation can be an impetus to the development of an industry, it’s aviation.

Patriotic Cleaning

upport for our country begins with support for our community. Good, local outcomes are cumulative. They add to a bigger positive outcome at the national level. Thus, cleaning the exterior of a commercial or a residential building contributes to patriotism.

A school, a hospital, a civic center—all the structures that enhance cohesion in a community—serve a function day after day. They also bolster feelings of well-being in a community, especially so when they are kept in good condition—unsoiled and in repair.

Most cleaning can be considered patriotic cleaning. Clean community structures, parks, and streets are more hygienic.

They are also more aesthetically pleasing and safer.

Clean communities may not get noticed as much as those in the opposite condition, but they showcase the day-to-day work that power washing contractors accomplish.

Aesthetic and hygienic surroundings boost cordial interactions among community members. A dumpster coated with residue, oozing unknowns, and emitting odors does not encourage neighbors who meet in a parking lot to pause to exchange pleasantries.

Thus, whether a contractor cleans dumpsters or the U.S. Capitol, the effort should be considered patriotic.

Each day the power washing contractors of the United States contribute to all that is good in our nation, and that’s patriotism in the most robust meaning of the word.

Some contractors have had the opportunity to take on special cleaning projects for local, state, or federal government—projects that contribute to preservation or restoration of a building.

Some contractors as a component of regular business clean government buildings. And many contractors do some cleaning each year as a form of community service.

All the foregoing forms of forging community connections through cleaning are patriotic. Cleaning a national landmark—building or memorial—is high-visibility patriotic cleaning to be sure.

Moreover, contractor members of our industry have had experience cleaning such landmarks both as paid contrac-

tors and in community service efforts. Henry Bockman, president of PowerWashCompany.com in Gaithersburg, MD, has deep involvement both ways.

“I’ve done quite a few projects to give back to the community,” says Bockman. “Probably the biggest thing I’ve done was when I created the Clean Across America Campaign with the PWNA.” The PWNA [Power Washers of North America] Clean Across America launched 23 years ago. The concept was to make assistance with the cleaning of national landmarks, community buildings, and such a way for PWNA members to participate in community service and at the same time to showcase the work that contractors accomplish.

The Clean Across America (CAA) program has gotten much notice. “We won the Take Pride in America Award, and I was honored with an award from President [George W.] Bush’s Thousand Points of Light Awards by the Daily Points of Light Foundation.”

Bockman, a military veteran, has long incorporated giving back to the community in his business. Specializing early on in building restoration, his location in the metropolitan Washington, D.C., region has given him the opportunity to carry out work on some of the best-known structures in the United States.

In August 2006 a group of 16 contractors and suppliers under the CAA umbrella worked in partnership with the U.S. Department of Interior to help clean the Jefferson Memorial and the Lincoln Memorial. The effort was part of Interior’s Take Pride in America Initiative.

Beyond the White House and Washington Monument, few federal structures enjoy the high recognition that the Jefferson Memorial and the Lincoln Memorial do. The memorials to the nation’s third and sixteenth presidents, respectively, were intended by their architects to tell parts of the nation’s story—a story fittingly recalled in 2026 (250 years since the signing of the Declaration of Independence).

The Lincoln Memorial was built first. Designed by Henry Bacon, it was completed during the years 1912 to 1922. The statue of Lincoln within the memorial was the creation of Daniel Chester French.

be imbued with meaning. Situated along the National Mall with the seat of government (U.S. Capitol) and the obelisk tribute to the “founder of that government” (George Washington), it remembers the “savior” of the government.

The Jefferson Memorial was completed between 1939 and 1943. It was designed by John Russell Pope. (The similarly domed original building at the National Gallery of Art was also designed by Pope). Scott and Lee suggest the Jefferson Memorial is best seen from an aerial vantage.

Marble predominates at the memorials: Vermont white marble at the Jefferson Memorial, and white Colorado marble and pink Tennessee marble at the Lincoln Memorial (which also has Indiana limestone in upper reaches).

Low pressure (below 600 psi) and careful attention to requirements of the Clean Water Act were two of the stringent parameters for the CAA cleaning effort. Wastewater was to be prevented from reaching either the nearby Potomac River or the Tidal Basin.

The volunteers from CAA used hot water at 45 gpm and very low pressure in their efforts. Passersby who caught a view of the ongoing work may have gained a new perspective on power washing, one that showed methods that go far beyond the layperson’s imagining of blasting with water.

The Cooperstown Baseball Hall of Fame in New York may or may not be as well-known as the memorials to Jefferson and Lincoln, but baseball has long been called the national pastime.

Not just the tradition of a national pastime, but something much more. The way in which baseball brings members of a community together in amateur and professional settings makes the Cooperstown site a place that meshes with our understanding of patriotism.

John Tornabene, owner of Clean County Powerwashing in Kings Park, NY, recalls a PWNA CAA effort that he participated in to clean the Cooperstown venue. It was all about giving back, he explains.

As a happy aside there was a commemorative photo. “I made the cover of the Cleaner Times magazine in 2005 with one of my guys holding the safety rope while I cleaned the gutters.”

Being part of a whole is day-to-day patriotism. Community links are built on each other.

In 2011 Tornabene took on a gratis project that involved only his company. (It’s exemplary of the sort of project that power washing contractors leap forward to accomplish whenever they can.) That was cleaning a Babe Ruth monument.

The cleaning of the neglected monument sparked something bigger. “It was the starting point to eventually get Babe Ruth the Presidential Medal of Freedom [posthumously] from President Trump in 2018,” explains Tornabene.

Tornabene saw the Babe Ruth statue in need and got going to revive it. That’s a familiar pattern of action among professionals in our industry.

Familiar patterns? Count also the thoughts contractors entertain about structures they would like to clean sometimes because a structure symbolizes the nation’s strengths.

“The Washington Monument in D.C. that I visited many times when I was stationed next to the Arlington Cemetery my last two years in the Navy in 1982 to 1986 is a fascinating structure,” says Tornabene. “Today if the opportunity came, we would definitely use a drone on it to make it look better than new.”

The Washington Monument was the tallest structure in the world when completed in 1884. Designed

by Robert Mills, it was built from 1845 to 1854; Thomas Casey supervised its completion from 1876 to 1884. (Yes, the U.S. Civil War along with money issues and political differences put a long pause on the completion of the project. But eventually everyone did return to the idea of a monument to the first president, one that expressed gratitude.)

Trying to imagine that the Washington Monument ranked as the tallest structure in the world fewer than 150 years ago forces realization of how fast things can change.

Patriotic endeavors make stronger the bridges needed to span years and decades.

The General Services Administration (GSA), established in 1947, is an independent entity that oversees the federal (public) buildings across the United States. GSA compiles, recommends, and sometimes mandates practices for building maintenance and restoration. (GSA.gov is an excellent place to begin a search for best practices in cleaning everything from historic masonry to polishing and cleaning brass plate.)

Interested in the least intrusive approaches that produce good outcomes, GSA was an early adopter of soft washing. In 2019, for example, it highlighted the successful use

of the method to clean the John W. Solomon Building and U.S Courthouse in Chattanooga, TN. Dating to 1932, the building had decades of soiling that left it looking like a graffiti-filled railway embankment.

When members of a community can take time to reflect—whether at a national landmark or in a remarkably

clean park (benches, tables, walkways, dumpsters, etc.)—they become inspired to do their part to replicate the good that they see in real time or commemorated.

Active participation in civic life requires much more than talking. It demands the doing that makes each of us patriots. CT

he International Carwash Association hosted its annual flagship industry event, The Car Wash Show, May 11–13 at the Music City Center in downtown Nashville. The event welcomed more than 9,000 attendees and featured a record 455 exhibitors. It brought together car wash owners, operators, distributors, and suppliers for several days of education, networking, and product demonstrations.

The exhibit halls featured companies showcasing car wash equipment, chemicals, software, payment systems, and operational services designed to help operators improve efficiency and profitability. Attendees had the opportunity to compare products, explore new technology, and connect directly with vendors serving the professional car wash industry.

Education was a major part of the event, with more than 60 hours of educational content. Sessions covered business management, marketing, customer experience, employee development, and operational strategies. The programs offered practical information for both established operators and those newer to the industry.

The show had a continuing focus on the trends of automation, digital integration, and membership programs aimed at improving customer convenience and operational efficiency.

With strong attendance, an active show floor, and a comprehensive educational program, The Car Wash Show 2026 provided a valuable experience for both attendees and exhibitors.

SCHEDULING SUMMER WORK

lacid summer days inspire many, such as poets, lyricists, and painters. Moreover, with the many hours of daylight, almost everyone can enjoy a tranquil interval each day. Everyone, that is, except perhaps a busy contractor.

Summer work for power washing contractors is often complicated by the intensity of both weather and the number of customer requests for service. Consequently, scheduling work often requires extra effort—or perhaps not. It may just require an adjustment to thinking.

For instance, there might seem to be a compression of requests for service because of fine weather. Such a pileup could add complexity to an operation, but one expert with deep experience in the field tells us that’s only if the contractor lets it.

“The only difficulties are the ones you fabricate in your mind,” says Jeff Kirby, owner of Superior SoftWash in Linthicum, MD. “There is always a demand for exterior cleaning services all year round.”

Contractors must simply understand which customer needs are most prevalent, explains Kirby. “You just need to know when your clients spend their money.”

It’s possible, says Kirby, to get to know clients well enough to bring into balance when they have funds in their budget, when they can post charges, and when a contractor wants to do the work. The balance affirms the importance of establishing relationships with clients and encouraging them to set up a regular cleaning schedule.

With more work in warmer months, more employees may be needed. Is it more difficult to find and retain workers in summer?

“No,” says Kirby. “We have a proven method of recruiting, onboarding, and developing our team.

We never stop recruiting.”

The stability of a company’s team is important to work in summer when there may be much more to be done.

But it matters year around, and no owner should despair at finding employees even when other companies are competing for new hires.

“There are always talented people looking for a better place to build a career,” says Kirby. “Effective recruiting is all about your culture and your methods.”

Think about what prospective hires want to see in an employer. “Talented, ambitious people don’t want to work for less-than-competent bosses,” explains Kirby Also, consider getting some expert help with recruitment. “We stopped the trial-and-error method and sought advice from effective business leaders—how to recruit, train, develop, promote, and retain our team members,” says Kirby.

With stability in number of employees, a company has few if any concerns about meeting the peaks of service requests that may come in summer. Even so, a contractor should not just start the season in a new year without appraising the results in the same season last year.

And what if the contractor has not done the evaluation? Do what’s possible. Begin by asking another question, says Kirby. “Now that it is summer, what can I do to recover from my failure to plan for the summer?”

Recover by doing the analysis now in July. It’s always better to be late than never.

“Increase your marketing effort and spend some money,” says Kirby. “You should be spending more money on marketing when it is slower.”

Whether it’s summer or any season, the bottom line remains the same.

“You cannot make a profit until all the bills are paid,” says Kirby. “If you do not generate enough revenue to pay the bills, there is no hope for a profit.”

Moreover, profit must be the goal in every season. “You must make a profit 12 months of the year,” says Kirby. “Rehash lost opportunities from the spring and last year.”

And be careful about losing opportunities in the same way this year.

“You lose just as many jobs to indecision as you do to having possible customers hire someone else,” says Kirby.

OFF SEASON?

Summer scheduling challenges will differ across the nation. Indeed, we get a reminder about that from Missy Tanguay, the business development manager at Deco Products in Denver, CO, as well as the owner of Hoover Pressure Cleaning in North Point, FL. “Is summer part of your on-season or offseason?” stands as a question that must be asked, says Tanguay.

“In Florida, summer is actually our offseason.”

That means a different pulse in the Sunshine State. “Many of our seasonal residents head north to cooler weather, which naturally slows demand,” explains Tanguay.

Still, the slower days of summer are put to good use. “During this time we focus on planning work that helps keep our team members schedules steady so they can continue supporting their families,” explains Tanguay.

With the pace a bit slower during summer—not just because of heat but because of rain—some creative outreach to customers can be done. (It’s a reversal of sorts of approaches that get contractors in northern tier states through winter.)

“We often coordinate with HOA [homeowners’ association] projects and offer special community discounts for our full-time residents,” says Tanguay. “It’s a great opportunity to take advantage of service availability— even during the rainy season—while also helping our crew maintain consistent hours.”

As always, offseason is what a contractor makes of it. And creative approaches can push summer toward a highly viable season, more on than off.

To be sure, the rain that Tanguay mentions confounds contractors in summer in many parts of the country.

weather is a definite challenge occurs in any season, and in spring 2026 (as we write), parts of the country confront drought as other parts experience severe storms.

The WaterSense (https://www.epa. gov/watersense) website from the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) includes information (graphics) about the severity of drought in the Southeast and West in May 2026 (as we write).

The vagaries of weather must be built into planning. (That’s yet another reason to not have to be worried about a stable roster of employees.)

The most difficult part of scheduling summer work when serving the region around Houston, Texas?

“Definitely for us it would be the storms and heat,” says Doug Rucker, owner of the DougRuckerStore.com in Porter, TX. “Here in Houston we can have two to three weeks with zero rain, and then all of a sudden have a week where it rains all day every day or parts of every day,” explains Rucker.

“This can play havoc on scheduling due to getting behind.”

Rucker’s strategy is to do as much as possible in a day that can be done safely. “During the hot summer days, we have to be careful.”

It’s about ensuring as much is accomplished one day as can be, but being certain the team is “always fresh and ready for the next day,” explains Rucker. “Hydration throughout the day is important, but I’m also a big believer in hydrating from the moment you wake up.”

For his part Rucker has not had much difficulty with staffing in summer. “I have never found any part of the year to be easier or harder, but summer is actually easier than other times of year for us.”

WEATHER WISDOM

Experienced contractors know they must respect the weather. They want to keep their employees safe, absolutely. As a subtext, they know that OSHA [Occupational Safety and

Health Administration] monitors companies to verify safe practices.

As it happens, OSHA does not just monitor; it also offers some good suggestions for keeping employees safe. In fact, it has a specific website area that focuses on heat (OSHA.gov/heat) with valuable reminders for employers.

One of the most important OSHA tips as summer begins is that the most risk to workers from heat comes during the first week of work for new employees or for longtime employees experiencing the first days of hot summer weather. According to OSHA, three out of four heat-related fatalities occur during that week.

At the onset of a period of intense heat, employees should be given time to acclimate, working fewer hours the first day and then longer each day.

Drinking water must be available, and employees must be encouraged to drink and take rest breaks in shade or shelter throughout the day.

Employees should be instructed in how to recognize illness related to heat.

And employees should be dressed for the heat (e.g. loose, light-colored clothing) to the extent that such dress does not interfere with PPE [personal protective equipment] or pose a danger around machines.

As much work as possible should be scheduled to keep employees out of the direct sun in the warmest part of the day. When washing exteriors, try to clean north and east-facing exposures when the sun is most intense.

(Check local conditions for peak hours of sun, a two-hour interval falling between 11 a.m. and 3 p.m., and avoid this time if possible.)

Scheduling work outside peak hours for sun exposure improves safety. It also improves outcomes.

Such scheduling keeps any chemical used out of direct sun exposure and it reduces (a bit) evaporation of water from surfaces.

Do take exacting care in summer work scheduling to protect employees, get good outcomes, and conserve water. CT

costs, a pressure washing professonal can build the foundation necessary for the sustained growth and success of the business.

Before making the next equipment purchase, the total cost of ownership over the expected lifespan should be calculated. Also evaluate how the investment aligns with the long-term objectives of the business. The decision to prioritize quality over cost will pay dividends for years to come.

While the temptation to choose lower-priced alternatives is understandable, particularly for businesses watching their budgets, the long-term benefits of commercial-grade equipment and other business assets far outweigh the initial cost savings of cheaper options.

Cutting costs on business equipment might seem to be a wise decision,

but cheap business equipment often costs more than quality alternatives over time. Obviously, investing in quality business equipment involves more than a simple purchasing decision—it’s a strategic choice that impacts every aspect of the pressure cleaning operation.

The cost of acquiring better-grade equipment is often reduced with tax breaks, particularly after the passage of the One Big Beautiful Bill Act (OBBBA).

DEPRECIATION WRITE-OFFS

Today the original, full 100 percent bonus depreciation is back. What’s more, the deduction will apply through 2029 for property acquired after January 19, 2025.

179 first year expensing deduction from $1,250,000 to $2,500,000 and increased the asset acquisition limit from the current $3,130,000 to $4,000,000. The full deduction would be phased out should the pressure cleaning operation’s equipment or other asset purchases reach the $4,000,000 ceiling. The increases took effect for tax year 2025.

ENVIRONMENTAL PROPERTY INVESTMENTS

A pressure-washing equipment retailer or any business that constructs, improves, or designs the building they own to be energy efficient may continue to qualify for the Section 179D deduction for energy-efficient commercial buildings. Under OBBBA, this credit won’t terminate for any property

for which construction began before June 30, 2026.

On the downside, properties that fall under the heading of green energy producing assets or recycling and storage will no longer be considered five-year properties for depreciation purposes.

These assets will now be subject to depreciation using the general class lifetime rules, resulting in smaller depreciation expenses in earlier years.

Tax credits will continue for wind and solar projects which either start construction by June 2026 or which go online by December 2027.

THE TAX WRITE-OFF MYTH

While not always the best course of action, today’s tax rules can reduce the out-of-pocket cost of equipment, software, and, in many cases, even the

building housing the pressure cleaning operation. Remember, however, equipment purchases reduce taxable income, not the taxes owed on a dollar-for-dollar basis.

The myth and the year-end tax scramble result from two fundamental misunderstandings. The first strategy treats bonus depreciation, Section 179 expensing, and other write-offs as one-to-one reductions of what is owed.

In reality, those write-offs reduce taxable income that is then taxed at the pressure cleaning business’s marginal tax rate, typically 25–30 percent.

Far too many pressure-washing business owners make investment purchasing decisions based on incomplete information about their actual tax liability. If the investment in new or improved equipment will increase Cleaner Times • July 2026 • 47

the operation’s income in later years, wouldn’t the tax deduction produce a better result in those more-profitable, higher tax bill years?

Investing in equipment, software, or other business assets doesn’t automatically result in an equivalent reduction in the pressure cleaning operation’s tax bill. A full write-off in the year of acquisition may be more profitable if claimed as depreciation deductions spread over the life of that property. Still remaining, however, is the question of how best to fund any investment in equipment.

FINANCING EQUIPMENT INVESTMENTS

Is aging equipment holding the business back? For many businesses, investing in the right equipment is the key to being competitive, expanding, or increasing efficiency. Unfortunately, funding critical equipment replacements and upgrades can be challenging. That’s where business equipment financing enters the picture.

Equipment financing helps pressure cleaning businesses invest in the tools they need to stay competitive while preserving their working capital. In general, equipment financing is a type of loan or a lease available from a variety of sources allowing the business to purchase needed equipment without using cash.

Equipment financing is also versatile. It can fund purchases ranging from small-dollar items such as laptops to larger purchases of $100,000 or higher.

Equipment financing is also used for very large pieces of industrial equipment that can range in price from $3 million to as much as $20 million.

The two main varieties of equipment financing are as follows: • Business equipment loans—With a business equipment loan, the presure cleaning business owns the equipment while the lender holds a security interest through a lien, meaning the equipment serves as collateral until the loan

is fully repaid. Once repaid the lender removes the lien. Loans sometimes require a down payment. Borrowers typically pay back loans over a longer span of time—up to seven years, depending on the value of the asset.

• Business equipment leases—With a lease, the lessor owns the equipment until the lease expires, at which point the lessee can decide whether to return, purchase, or extend the lease.

Although there are many types of leases, including options that give the lessee an opportunity to buy the equipment once the lease ends, does leasing qualify as “investing”? After all, leasing is generally considered renting, not investing, because the lessee does not build equity or own the asset. However, while leasing is not an investment, it can be a strategic financial move to free up cash for other investments or to gain business tax deductions.

Whether seeking funding from a bank, online lender, equipment finance company, a dealer, or a manufacturer, keep in mind that not all financing partners are created equal. Traditional banks, for example, usually offer lower rates but have stricter requirements.

Online lenders can mean faster approvals and more flexible terms but higher rates. Specialized equipment lenders offer industry expertise and flexible terms and are more knowedgable about assets.

THE FINANCING QUESTIONS

When the best source for financing the operation’s equipment and other business asset purchases has been determined, certain questions require answers. Those questions are as follows: • What are the total costs (including fees)?

• Is the interest rate fixed or variable?

• Are there prepayment penalties?

• Can the payment structure be customized to be more compatible with the borrowing pressure washing operation?

• What happens at the end of the term?

INTEREST EXPENSE CAPS

A word of warning about the tax rules that have long placed a limit of 30 percent of an operation’s gross income on the amount of interest paid by a pressure washing business that could be claimed as a tax deduction.

Fortunately, small businesses (defined as businesses whose average annual gross receipts for a three-year period that ends in 2025 did not exceed $31 million) remain exempt.

THE BOTTOM LINE

Investing in equipment can lead to significant long-term savings, making it a strategic choice for sustaining the financial health of a pressure cleaning business. Among the warning signs that indicate such investments should take place are the following: • Rising repair costs and frequent breakdowns • Operational disruptions due to outdated machinery • The inability to meet demand or quality standards • Safety hazards or security vulnerabilities.

Investing in quality business equipment and other business assets represents a strategic commitment to operational excellence, employee satisfaction, and long-term business success. While the initial investment may require careful financial planning, the comprehensive benefits—ranging from improved productivity and reduced maintenance costs to enhanced brand image and competitive advantages—make quality equipment one of the most valuable investments a pressure washing business can make.

The key to making the most of these benefits lies in viewing equipment, software, or any business asset purchases as long-term strategic decisions rather than simple cost centers. Naturally, before the pressure washing operation’s next equipment purchase, the total cost of ownership over the expected lifespan should be calculated as well as how the investment aligns with the operation’s long-term business objectives.

Obviously, in order to get the best results from any capital investment, there must be a plan that addresses both the pressure cleaning operation’s short- and long-term needs. A proper plan will save time and resources and result in increased efficiency, a competitive edge, tax breaks, long-term savings, and, of course, increased productivity. leaner Times publishers Richard and Dana Johns recently had the opportunity to attend portions of CETA’s summer face-to-face meeting held May 12–14 at the DoubleTree Hotel in downtown Nashville, Tennessee.

With a relationship spanning back to CETA’s first PowerClean show in 1990, Cleaner Times has had the privilege of watching the organization grow and evolve through the years. It was especially nice to spend some time with both the executive board and the full board of directors and gain a little additional perspective on the work being done throughout the industry.

While we did not attend the full meeting agenda, our discussions with both the executive board and later with the full board gave us a chance to see some of the work taking place behind the scenes.

One of the topics discussed involved ideas on continuing to strengthen CETA membership and increasing awareness of the value CETA brings to both its members and the industry. There were also conversations surrounding education, member involvement, and ways CETA can continue providing resources that help businesses succeed.

One thing that stood out during our time there was the commitment of the people serving on the board.

These industry professionals volunteer their time and effort to help guide initiatives that support distributors, manufacturers, suppliers, and contractors throughout the cleaning equipment industry.

Much of the work that organizations like CETA do takes place behind the scenes and often goes unnoticed. Meetings like this serve as a reminder that there are many ongoing efforts aimed at helping strengthen and move the industry forward.
