Happy New Year and welcome to 2025! January 20th is Inauguration Day for the 47th President of the United States. Besides praying for a peaceful transition of power, we wonder what domestic policies a new administration will pass that will have an impact on the pressure washing industry for better or worse. The next few years will provide us with these answers. On page six Diane Calabrese has written “How to Decide Whether to Maintain Your Business or Expand It.” Curtis Braber of BE Power Equipment and Gus Alexander of FNA Group share how they came to decisions to expand their businesses. As Calabrese notes, “Acquisitions included measures of both enthusiasm and prudence. And prudence should take precedence.” Make sure to consult the 2025 Sourcebook. This will allow you to have access to the right equipment and accessories for pressure washing, so your business can provide excellent pressure washing services, steam cleaning services, and more, and to grow your company’s profits. Contact information for industry manufacturers and suppliers is listed beginning on page 12. Beginning on page 20 a multitude of products are listed under the appropriate category heading so that you can get the equipment and supplies you need to gear up and be prepared for a successful year. The businesses listed on these pages are here to help you meet your 2025 goals by educating you about the correct pressure washers and accessories you need to purchase, depending on the job, so visit their websites and call them to get started. Turn to page 58 to read about future plans for the Cleaning Equipment Trade Association (CETA) and how it could benefit your company, and flip to page 72 to read about future plans for the Power Washers of North America (PWNA) and how your company can benefit and thrive as a member of this professional organization. Cleaner Times wishes you a Happy New Year and a successful 2025!

HOW TO DECIDE WHETHER TO MAINTAIN YOUR BUSINESS OR EXPAND IT
D
ecision making is difficult. That is not debatable. Should you buy a house, sell a house, or enlarge a house? Should you buy a new car or a refurbished car? There’s no foolproof secret about how to make the optimal decision about anything. Pros and cons must be weighed. No venture in life is risk free, not one. Thus, suppose a business has good cash flow, provides a steady income for its owner, and shows stability in all 6 • January 2025 • Cleaner Times
the measures used to evaluate strength. Should an owner just keep doing what he or she is doing, or should the owner consider expanding? Perhaps adding a new region, service, or product will make the business stronger still. And are there downturns in the economy that might be better met by more diversity in a company’s offerings? What to do? Back up and think business philosophy. Each owner is unique with a one-of-a-kind philosophy about business. Yet there are some common strategies: grow, grow enough to reach a
stable equilibrium, grow enough to sell the business and start another, etc. “We have always been a growthdriven company,” says Curtis Braber, owner of BE Power Equipment in Abbotsford, BC, Canada. “We feel that the key is to diversify products and vertically integrate components to stay competitive and offer value to our dealers.” Vertical integration is in itself an expansion approach. Instead of relying on suppliers for parts, a company makes those manufacturers part of its business. Such integration at large

companies may extend to owning the sources of raw materials that go into components. Braber tells us something about his company’s approach to vertical integration. “In 2018 we purchased America’s largest parts distribution company, Barens Inc.” The purchase of the parts distribution firm allowed Braber’s company to expand its parts offerings to dealers. “In 2022 we purchased GCA Largo manufacturing in Nashville to widen our offerings of hot water washers and high-quality coil production,” says
Braber. “We have rarely pulled back from growth opportunities.” In fact, the list of acquisitions continues to get longer. “We recently purchased our third manufacturing company in Australia, Pulse Manufacturing, a sewer-jetter manufacturer, which is managed by BAR Group Australia—another Australian-based pressure washer manufacturer we have ownership in,” says Braber. Practicing both horizontal and vertical integration is a way many companies grow larger. The decision
of whether to acquire a competitor (horizontal) or a supplier (vertical) requires serious evaluation of the prospective acquisition. For instance, a company may be a great complement to an existing business, but if it’s in financial ill health that might be a dealbreaker. It is “might be” because the buyer may see an immediate fix to stabilize a faltering company. In that case, the acquisition could be a bargain to buy and a boon to the purchaser. No one buys a company without due diligence. The similarity with Cleaner Times • January 2025 • 7
purchasing a house is obvious. We all read accounts of individuals who bought homes from people who had stolen titles to the homes. How did it happen? Because the purchaser failed to carry out his or her due diligence. The U.S. Small Business Administration (SBA.gov) provides primers on business expansion. Merge and acquire businesses is one of them. It reminds a would-be buyer that merging or acquiring a business is much like starting a business, but with a few extra steps. The extra steps protect the owner’s existing business. First on the list is determining the valuation of the company that might be purchased. Never rely on the valuation presented by the company that is for sale. A third-party appraiser may be the best choice. Why not use in-house staff to evaluate a potential acquisition? If an inhouse appraiser is keen for the deal to proceed, he or she might unintentionally minimize red flags. It’s no different from the way many of us have

talked ourselves into a house purchase that perhaps was not calamitous, but still ignored several updates (and expenses) revealed to be required in short order post-purchase. Acquisitions include measures of both enthusiasm and prudence. And prudence should take precedence.
READINESS
“We decided to expand back in 2018 and to acquire companies that could fit into our growth plan, taking into consideration product alignment that works within our core competence,” says Gus Alexander, CEO of FNA Group in Pleasant Prairie, WI. And the expansion has been great. “We have acquired four businesses in the last few years,” explains Alexander. “As a result, we have increased our brand awareness coupled with an increase in our revenue and bottom line.” Alexander emphasizes that acquisition represents only one part of a multi-
part strategy to grow. “In addition, we looked to innovation of our existing product line to increase our value and drive revenue as well.” Returning to the business strategy, plan, or outlook (philosophy), which all roll into one another, Alexander reminds us that the starting point—that the vision is integral to the company— cannot be left behind as a company grows. “The key or most important factor for expanding a business generally revolves around market fit.” Alexander explains the fit requires ensuring the alignment of products or services with customer needs and demands in the company’s target markets. “This includes understanding customer preferences, identifying gaps that our offerings can fit, and continuously improving our value proposition.” Determining the market fit comes first. But many factors “beyond market fit” must be considered, says Alexander. And he lists seven.
Strong customer relationships, a scalable business model, financial health and investment, a talented workforce, competitive advantage, adaptability and innovation, and effective marketing and sales strategy must be weighed, says Alexander. For instance, with strong customer relationships in place, a new venture by a company immediately attracts interest. A new product from a company known to and appreciated by its customer base draws immediate attention. As such, it will have a built-in constituency to convey positive word-of-mouth referrals. And about the scalable business model? “It allows for growth without proportionally increasing cost,” says Alexander. “This might involve automation, streamlining processes, or using technology to scale.” What about financial health? It must be present, demonstrated by sufficient funds or access to them, if expansion is to occur, explains Alexander. There’s the capital required for the acquisition itself as well as marketing, hiring, and product development. Let’s consider one more: adaptability and innovation. “Rapidly adapting to changing trends and continuously improving our products or services will keep our business relevant as we continue down our growth path,” says Alexander. Skilled employees (talented workforce), a clearly differentiated product or service (competitive advantage), and ways to reach new customers (effective marketing and sales strategy) round out the seven, explains Alexander. They undergird and propel the expansion from concept to reality. Among the skilled employees will be those who have responsibility for ascertaining that no hoops are missed. Going back to the SBA for reminders, we find a good summary of the many must-dos when entering a new market. Legal requirements must be met. Licenses and permits may be needed, especially with a move into a new region or novel product. There may also be zoning restrictions that have
to be considered before a physical expansion of an existing company. And don’t forget taxes. The number of logistic concerns tied to an expansion varies. Preparation, not trepidation, is the way to meet and work across such concerns.
REALITY CHECK
Just as most of us will one day have home-buying experiences to recall, so business owners have experience with
the maintain-or-expand decision-making process. (And it’s a good idea to talk to colleagues about their experiences when chatting informally at professional society or business meetings.) “I have been there and done that,” says Roy Pennington, owner of Hi Pressure Cleaning Systems Inc. in Houma, LA. “I expanded my manageable two stores 60 miles apart to branch out to a location in Mobile, Alabama, when a competitor ‘abandoned’ that market.”
Cleaner Times • January 2025 • 9
Pennington says he went to Mobile and located the former manager of the company and “made him a management/ownership offer he could not refuse.” That offer was “33 percent ownership at no cost after one year.” How did it go? “It worked for three years until for various reasons he along with another one-third owner felt they could do a better job of running the store without me,” explains Pennington. “So, I got voted out of management and control status.” The arrangement did not end well, says Pennington. “That store ‘failed’ and closed within six to eight months of my no longer having any involvement in its operations.” But business owners are optimists by nature. And when a new opportunity emerges, it kindles interest and excitement. That’s the point at which Pennington gives us a reality check. “I wanted to branch out to another location in Jackson, Mississippi. Upon hearing
10 • January 2025 • Cleaner Times
my intentions, my CPA sat me down and explained that I was doing a great job and making money; and at some point I would have to realize that these growth plans would only entail my making jobs for other people.” The CPA’s caution is an important one. How close to the operation of a business does the owner want to be? The larger a business becomes, the more helping hands at the management level are needed. Does the owner want to manage the managers or be intimately involved with the products or services? This is a crucial part of an owner’s perspective that must be understood by the owner, who is the ultimate decision maker. “I had seen previous ‘company stores’ get sold by national manufacturers, and in talking with the subsequent owners, I quickly learned that now the locations were being micromanaged by an on-site owner,” explains Pennington. It gave him a fresh perspective.
“Amazingly it became apparent that inventory levels could be dramatically reduced, and we no longer needed 10 company vehicles,” says Pennington. “You pretty much have got to be hands-on to see what is happening. Experts from afar are no substitute.” Maintaining a successful business— being part of the day-to-day processes and comings and goings—suits many business owners. Sometimes, as Pennington explains, they simply must try a different structure to find out they are most happy with the one they already had. We could go back to the house analogy. Many people miss a house so much they try to buy it back. But Pennington gives us a better analogy for an owner appreciating what works best for him or her. “I have remembered the old baseball sage, that ‘too many times a hitter who has a stand-up triple gets tagged out at home plate by trying to stretch the triple to the home run.’” CT

As we look ahead, I want to encourage all members to actively engage in this year’s endeavors and take full advantage of the resources and tools available through our association. These are designed to support both your personal and professional development. With that, I would like to share some key focuses for us as an association for the coming year as follows: • Advocacy Efforts—We will continue our work with CARB and SORE to ensure that less than 25 HP gasoline engine-driven pressure washers remain recognized as essential tools and to seek exempt status for them. As the industry moves towards electrification, it is essential to balance innovation with practicality. While electric pressure washers are gaining traction due to environmental considerations and advances in battery technology, gasolinepowered models still provide
unmatched power and portability for certain applications. Our aim is to ensure that regulatory changes do not hinder the availability and effectiveness of these essential tools for our members. • Electrification Trends—The push towards electrification in our industry is inevitable and growing. We are witnessing a shift as manufacturers develop more efficient and powerful electric pressure washers, driven by both consumer demand and regulatory pressures. This transition presents both challenges and opportunities. We are committed to helping our members navigate this change, providing education on the benefits and limitations of electric models and supporting the continued innovation that meets the diverse needs of our industry. • Member Resources—As we expand the benefits and resources available, we encourage you to
utilize these tools to enhance your business operations and growth. • PowerClean 2025—Preparations are already underway for PowerClean 2025, our premier annual event. This year promises to be more impactful than ever, offering valuable networking opportunities, cutting-edge industry insights, and the latest innovations in cleaning technology. As our industry continues to evolve, your feedback and suggestions are invaluable. Please do not hesitate to reach out with any questions, concerns, or ideas. Our focus remains on how we can improve our resources and better serve you as members. Thank you for allowing the board and myself to serve you. Together we will continue to elevate CETA and ensure our industry’s future success. Best regards, Karl Loeffelholz, President 2025 Cleaning Equipment Trade Association (CETA) CT

CETA BOARD WELCOMES NEW DIRECTORS
C
ETA has had the privilege of welcoming five new members to the board of directors. Cleaner Times reached out to these new members and asked them to share a brief summary of their time in the pressure washing industry, what led to their decision to serve on the CETA board, what they hope to see during their service, and the reasons they would provide to others to join CETA and serve on the board.
While serving on the board, he hopes to help to provide a clear roadmap to address the challenges being raised with state and federal legislation that has a direct impact on the industry. He encourages others to join CETA and serve on the board, “If we truly want to have a voice for our industry, then supporting and engaging with an organization like CETA provides a platform to be heard and have real influence on the future.”

is an asset to all of us. Other committees such as benchmarking and CETA University are all about providing the distributor members with valuable tools to grow and improve their business. There is a lot to look forward to in the coming years.” Auger says it’s always nice to give back and sees that as a reason to encourage others to be a part of CETA. He states, “I’m thankful during my career to have worked for great companies that see the importance of CETA as an association and support their employees who have served on the board and committees. I’ve had the opportunity to meet so many great people over the years, and it makes being a part of CETA that much more meaningful to me.”
CASEY MEELKER, DIRECTOR
Manufacturer—Nilfisk
Gary Ashurst joined Kärcher North America in March 2021 with the responsibility for their professional business primarily concerning the floor care equipment. In 2023 he had pressure washing wrapped into his existing role. He shares, “My focus since this realignment has been to understand the developing trends of the pressure washer market and adapt our product and go-to-market strategy to align Kärcher.” He joined the CETA board to gain a better understanding of the pressure washing industry trends. He says, “Government legislation is also starting to impact our customer base, so I wanted to be actively involved with the pioneering organization, representing the needs for our industry.”
Aaron Auger started his pressure washing career in 1998 and over the last 26 years has been able to learn a lot and meet many great people in the industry. He remarks, “I’m hoping to keep learning and making new friends in the time that I have left!” Auger was asked to serve on the PowerClean committee in the early 2000s and enjoyed that experience so much that he decided to run for a position on the board of directors. He is currently in his fourth elected term and remarks, “CETA has had a positive influence on our industry over the last 20 years.” He comments, “I’m excited about what I’ve seen so far with this board of directors. The ongoing efforts of the CARB/SORE and technical committee
Casey Meelker has a background in residential construction, and after receiving a BA from Cal State San Bernardino in marketing, he joined the pressure washer industry in 2008 by going to work for Hydro Tek. Meelker says, “For the first few years I was in charge of local sales. In 2011 I joined the marketing team and through 2015 worked in various national and international sales and marketing roles. In 2015 when Hydro Tek was acquired by Nilfisk, I was able to work closely with both Cleaner Times • January 2025 • 55
marketing and R&D for all of the US products for Hydro Tek and Pressure-Pro. Today, I am the product manager for all Nilfisk High Pressure Washer products for the US and Canada. He was born and raised in Southern CA and still lives there today with his wife, Kristina, of almost 17 years. He enthuses, “We are blessed with five children, ages 13, 11, 9, and 6-year-old twins. I enjoy house projects, camping, golf, and helping out at our local church and school.” Meelker shares, “I am excited to be a member of the CETA board in order to give back to the industry which has been such a large part of my life for the past 16 years. I am eager to learn more about the other parts of the industry from my colleagues but also to see how I can contribute to growing awareness for CETA as an organization. CETA brings a huge value that is probably under recognized in the industry that I hope to help communicate to our larger industry base. I also see that we have various challenges and opportunities with new technology and regulations on the horizon that cannot be solved by just one company but need to be focused on by the industry.”

Phil Petty is the general manager at Williams Cleaning Systems LLC based out of Bakersfield, CA. Before entering into the pressure washing industry, he spent 19 years in the equipment rental business. He joined Williams Cleaning Systems in June 2013 as services manager. He remarks, “Within seven months I became the general manager, and I haven’t looked back. During my tenure we have opened a second location and doubled our service department at the original location.”
He says, “Over the last two years of being a member of CETA, I have learned more about the industry, business, and ever-evolving products. My decision to join the board was based on the challenges our industry faces, and I believe I can help with a few of the issues and help CETA grow.” Petty wants to promote CETA to those who can get value from what CETA offers. He also serves on the technical committee and plans to assist with the CARB/SORE regulations and to work toward setting standards for the industry. He see plenty of reasons for others to join CETA and serve on the board. Petty points out, “The people involved in CETA are companies/ individuals that one can learn from and use as a sounding board. Networking within CETA has been beneficial to me and Williams Cleaning. With a CETA membership (distributor, supplier, or manufacturer) your networking is focused in our field and helps expand each company’s business knowledge. CETA offers a benchmarking program that helps with improving your business with assistance in finding the strong and weak aspects of a business. Plus, it’s all confidential.
There is also access to new and upcoming products, specifically when CETA hosts an annual exhibit called PowerClean. It is focused to our industry, and the amount of knowledge from this three-day show is invaluable. These are just a few reason to join CETA and serve, and there are plenty more reasons.”

PLANS FOR
2025 by Diane M. Calabrese
A strong foundation and a clear mission—that sums up the Cleaning Equipment Trade Association (CETA) as 2025 begins. What can we expect in the workings of CETA over the next 12 months?
58 • January 2025 • Cleaner Times
“My plans are to build awareness and enhance our already great benefits,” says Karl Loeffelholz, CETA president and the distributor division manager at Mi-T-M Corp. in Peosta, IA. “I want to bring more awareness to the industry on what CETA actually does behind the scenes to keep everyone in business.” The “awareness” dimension could not be more important. Loeffelholz explains that the many accomplishments of CETA, which enrich everyone in the industry, merit higher visibility. It’s not about boasting about what’s been done. It’s about documenting all that’s been achieved. There’s nothing like a profile of success—known to members and prospective members— to encourage more of the same. CETA’s profile speaks to its success. For example, the association incorporates standing committees that focus on technical issues, regulations, and education. The committees ensure CETA keeps pace with industry, government, and societal changes. CETA celebrates 35 years in 2025. The anniversary means PowerClean® 2025 will take on a bit of a special glow. Plan to attend September 25–27 in Reno, NV, at the Peppermill Resort Spa Casino. Now, let’s turn to a list of the plans Loeffelholz has for supporting CETA members and growing the association. Think of the plans as buildouts on the robust structure in place.
the program, empowering distributors with meaningful data and best practices. • Promote CPC-100 certification— Increase awareness of this certification to ensure consistent standards across the industry. • Maximize online tools for business success—Bolster online resources to provide optimal value to members. • Strengthen alliances with the Scholarship Foundation—Support
the next generation and industry growth through this partnership. • Encourage participation in the Grant Program—Remind members to use this resource for employee education and staying current with industry advancements. • Promote PowerClean 2025— Highlight the annual meeting and tradeshow as a collaborative environment for idea-sharing and learning. POWERCLEAN 2024
n November 1–3, 2024, CETA and PWNA cohosted PowerClean at the Rosen Shingle Creek Hotel in Orlando, FL. The Women of CETA luncheon was held in the Conway room and was well attended. The ladies were able to participate in an ice breaker game to find out interesting facts about one another and enjoyed time to converse over a good meal. As golf tournament chairman, Karl Loeffelholz has written a good summary of the golf scramble [see sidebar]. Omitted from his report was the large alligator that ambled across the course while the men played, but that’s par for the course in Florida. The outdoor demonstrations were held late in the afternoon on November 1. Nilfisk demonstrated Whisper Wash’s Mini Mondo flat surface cleaner, PWNA pulled in their training trailer, Wood Defender
showed off one of their fence stains, Hotsy revved up their monster truck, and many more companies displayed their products. The demonstrations provided a great visual with much helpful information. The educational classes were held during the morning hours on November 2 and November 3. The following classes were offered: Accelerating Growth—CRM (customer relationship management), Service Platform, CETA Distributor Benchmarking, CETA Technical with an update from the Technical Harmonization Committee (THC), a Q & A on CARB (California Air Resources Board) and SORE (Small-off Road Engines) Awareness, and several industry round tables. During the Service Platform class, one of the panel members, Greg Sprunk, shared, “It’s a beautiful thing to build your service department.” The benefits of an integrated service plat-

form that goes hand in hand with your company’s accounting makes you paperless and helps to manage inventory and set pricing on a work order. For the question and answer on CARB SORE issues, Gus Alexander assured the members of CETA they could depend on the organization in the days ahead as CETA and its board continue to advocate on behalf of the industry. The trade show floor was opened in the afternoons on November 2 and 3, and there was a good amount of foot traffic. A look down the rows of booths revealed many conversations being held between exhibitors and attendees and questions being answered about the variety of products on display. It was a beneficial time for all. Don’t forget to save the date to celebrate CETA’s 35th anniversary at PowerClean 2025. It will be held at the Peppermill Resort in Reno, NV, on September 25–27. THE FUTURE OF AUTOMATED CAR WASHES by Diane M. Calabrese
A
person with a dirty car is very much in need of someone to wash it. (“It’s a truth universally acknowledged…” in the words of Jane Austen.) Thus, if there are automobiles, they will require cleaning. The who and how of cleaning depends upon the owner. The vehicle’s owner may take on the task with a bucket, hose, and chamois cloth. A DIY approach makes it easier to get the desired result, apply a soft touch, and save a bit of money. Increasingly states and municipal governments are putting restrictions on car washing at home. Drought conditions in many U.S. regions in 2024 put washing at home off limits. Conserving water is a must at any time. Anyone washing a car at home without an automatic shutoff nozzle should just commit to purchasing the nozzle. There’s no reason to use an average of 100 gallons of water to wash a car when a cut-off nozzle (or a trip to a commercial wash) can reduce that amount by half or more. The International Carwash Association (ICA) reports that more than 80 percent of car owners most often turn to a commercial wash to get their car cleaned. Self-serve, in-bay, and conveyor are among the configurations a car may meet when its owner decides that there’s a better choice than do-it-yourself. In fact, the better choice applies in many ways—not just time saving for the owner. Efficient use of water— including recycling—is one gain. Minimizing use of energy is another. Most commercial washes fall into the automated category. But there are some that do high-end cleaning (and detailing) with the tender loving-care touch of employees who take on manual cleaning. Automated car washes have grown more and more sophisticated. Touchless washes substitute a combination of water jets and chemicals for any kind of slapping, brushing, or rubbing with mechanical rollers.
Are automated car washes the future for all cleaning? Let’s get some perspective from Keith Bailey, the automation equipment sales manager for Hydro-Chem Systems (HCS) in Caledonia, MI. Bailey has been with his company for 12 years.
“YES” TO AN AUTOMATED FUTURE
Challenges in hiring, retention, and cost of labor transcend industries. Working with fewer employees doing more reduces costs. Automation makes
much of the fewer-and-more equations possible. “In an era where labor costs are on the rise and the pool of willing workers diminishes, the vehicle washing industry is experiencing a transformative shift toward automation,” says Bailey. “This evolution not only addresses labor challenges but also enhances efficiency, consistency, and environmental sustainability.” Look in the rearview mirror when looking at washing without automation.

Cleaner Times • January 2025 • 65
“Gone are the days of manual vehicle washing, which typically takes 45 minutes,” says Bailey. “Automated washes can now complete the task in just three minutes,” explains Bailey. Not only can more vehicles be cleaned per unit time, but they can be more thoroughly cleaned. Some parts of a vehicle may not get the attention they require with manual cleaning, says Bailey. Automated systems “thoroughly clean areas often neglected by hand, such as the undercarriage, ensuring comprehensive maintenance that extends the life of the vehicle.” More than car longevity is in play, though. Aesthetics matter, especially when a vehicle is used by a company, serves as a rental, or conveys passengers via the hands of ride-share drivers. “For businesses, maintaining a clean fleet is a strategic investment in brand image,” says Bailey. “In today’s competitive market, a well-kept appearance can set a company apart, reinforcing
66 • January 2025 • Cleaner Times
their commitment to quality and professionalism.” In fact, a clean vehicle showcases attention to detail and more. “With the cost-effectiveness of automated washes, businesses can enhance their public image without breaking the bank,” says Bailey. Automated systems will keep benefiting from innovation, and that’s a boon to vehicle owners. “As technology continues to advance, the vehicle washing sector is poised for further innovation,” says Bailey. With a streamlined, automated system, more people are free for other tasks. “Companies can now redirect human resources to more critical tasks requiring personal interaction,” explains Bailey. Overall, automation accelerates the move toward many goals simultaneously. “It boosts operational efficiency and aligns with broader sustainability goals, reducing water and energy consumption,” says Bailey.
Sustainable practices loom large in all places. Many companies document their strides in their achievement of them. Bailey reminds us that automated large vehicle washes offer several significant advantages in sustainability. “One of the key benefits of automated washes is their ability to operate within a controlled environment.” A controlled environment facilitates efforts to contain wastewater. Wastewater can be more easily routed to a collection system for treatment and disposal or recycling. It’s not just about capturing pollutants before they escape to the environment. “In many cases automated washes employ advanced water reclamation systems, allowing them to significantly reduce overall water consumption during each wash,” says Bailey. Still, if chemicals are substituting for mechanical agitation during a wash, don’t the chemicals become a concern? They should not if all is planned well.
“The detergents used in high-quality truck washes are formulated to be environmentally friendly,” says Bailey. “When used correctly, they typically have a near-neutral pH at discharge, which minimizes environmental impact.” The environmental friendliness of chemicals takes many forms. “Today’s leading truck wash detergents are not only biodegradable but also phosphate-free, aligning with modern regulations and eco-friendly practices,” says Bailey. “By prioritizing sustainable methods, automated vehicle washes are not just cleaning fleets; they’re contributing to a healthier planet,” says Bailey. “As the industry continues to innovate, the integration of environmentally responsible practices will play a critical role in shaping the future of vehicle maintenance.”
Similarly, AI coupled with automation can make it easier to sort through the type of water treatment (including reclamation) that should be deployed. Water volume, chemical concentration, and limits on discharge set by a municipality are just three of the many variables that must be assessed to successfully treat wastewater (and choose a method for treatment). How often should a vehicle be washed? What’s the ideal interval for
keeping the vehicle clean, reducing the amount of water (and chemicals) used, and preserving the finish? Ultimately, we can expect sensors built into vehicles to indicate when it’s time to clean a vehicle. And we can probably also anticipate the information will be conveyed to an automated wash that will then respond to a specific vehicle with the exact sort of cleaning it requires. CT
BROAD VIEW OF AUTOMATION
Every type of car wash benefits from automation. It’s because automation makes it possible to do more with less. Hands-off and mechanical-devicesoff automated (aka frictionless) washes that use jets and detergents represent the top tier. But a commitment to best practices means all types of car washes have moved toward the same result. The same sort of best practices that conserve water and energy in all settings apply to car washes. If there’s a conveyor, it must be maintained. So, too, must the nozzles, which require periodic checks on orientation. Just as sensors to sound the alarm about problems are built into vehicles, they can be built into any kind of automated car wash. Designing for a buildout that incorporates ways to save water and energy allows for continuous improvement. The term “automated” has been applied to car washes for at least 60 years. Now the term means much more than a type of mechanization. Often it means touchless. And increasingly it’s likely to include an AI component that directs the automated system to provide more attention to the parts of a vehicle that require a bit extra. HIGH-PERFORMANCE PUMPS—MATCH THEM TO THE TASK DELIVERING RELIABLE, EFFICIENT, AND CONSISTENT RESULTS UNDER DEMANDING CONDITIONS by Diane M. Calabrese Photo by iStockphoto.com/Segoro Adem 76 • January 2025 • Cleaner Times
I
s it only in the eye of the beholder? No, it’s more than that. The experience of a user generally earns a pump the “high-performance” descriptor. Yet to some extent, top criteria for assessing performance differ with settings in which pumps are deployed. Factors by which pumps are appraised include everything from power and efficiency to reliability and durability. Most pumps are evaluated on a constellation of criteria, which cluster around getting the job done well and as fast as possible. Is it possible to arrive at a universal definition of a high-performance pump? Probably not. But defining a high-performance pump in a specific setting is doable. Add the caveat that some in the pump industry do not see the need for an over-arching descriptor like highperformance because the specifics of performance make it clear the pump is top notch. It’s analogous to highperformance car engines: we recognize them without the label. Moreover, even if we haven’t taken apart an Aston Martin engine, we know there’s precision engineering involved. It’s the same with the topof-line, high-performance pumps. Let’s move on and learn how members of our industry define highperformance pumps. In fact, let’s start with a definition. A high-performance pump is “one that delivers reliable, efficient, and consistent results under demanding conditions,” says Karl Loeffelholz, distributor division manager at Mi-T-M Corporation in Peosta, IA. “It is designed to handle high pressure with minimal wear.” Such pumps fill an important niche in our industry, says Loeffelholz. “High-performance pumps are crucial for industrial and large-scale cleaning, like cleaning construction equipment and infrastructure maintenance.” The pumps serve admirably in such contexts because “high pressure is needed to effectively remove stubborn dirt, grime, and debris,” explains
Loeffelholz. But that’s just one facet of their utility. “In the oil and gas industry, highperformance pumps must perform in rigorous conditions,” says Loeffelholz. “Being built with durable materials and advanced engineering, these pumps improve the longevity of equipment and reduce maintenance.” There are settings where high-performance pumps greatly enhance results. “Industries where sanitation and cleaning are paramount, like food processing, attain optimal outcomes thanks to such pumps,” says Loeffelholz. “Food processing requires pumps that can handle high-pressure washing for sterilization and cleaning to enhance health and safety and meet standards and regulations.” Of course, just as no one would put an Aston Martin V12 in a Hyundai, the pump must always be matched to the task. Precision-engineered products require fine tuning and routine attention to attain maximum longevity. Again, it’s a constellation of criteria that defines high performance for a user. And in some settings, longevity may be greater in pumps with a bit less sensitivity than those that have been exactingly engineered. In many ways a high-performance pump is an optimally performing pump that matches its task. Modest performance (e.g., the Hyundai engine) is sometimes all that a task demands if it’s reliable.
VARIED AND VITAL
The “varied and vital” heading fits most engineered mechanical devices that support the industrial and space ages. So it is with pumps. “The definition of a high-performance pump can vary,” says Derek Majewski, CFPS, marketing and business development specialist at Cat Pumps in Minneapolis, MN. “Over the decades in the pressure washer market, different levels of demand have emerged.” And as the demands have changed, the manufacturers of pumps have kept pace—or even led to new possibilities. Majewski explains that in the pressure
washer market needs range from pumps to serve residential cleaning and restoration to “more demanding commercial and industrial cleaning services.” Reflect on the design build of a pump. “High-performance pumps are generally designed with higher-grade components and technology to handle increased flow rates and pressures in a wider variety of operating environments,” says Majewski. Move on from the baseline. “Premium high-performance pumps are meticulously engineered with a focus on maximizing efficiency, reliability, and durability,” explains Majewski. Depth and breadth of experience spurs the creativity of pump manufacturers. “Our company has over half a century of experience designing and manufacturing industry-leading highperformance pumps,” says Majewski. The experience has resulted in the accumulation of all that’s built into pumps. “All of our pumps are constructed with highest-quality driveends, manifolds, plungers, and seals, even on the smaller models often found in high-end retail packages,” explains Majewski. Indeed, Majewski says that his company “strives to be the go-to for numerous markets around the world.” And that includes being “a brand that many pressure washer and cleaning equipment owners turn to for replacements of underperforming or inoperable pumps.” Where do we find pumps that fit the high-performance descriptor? Look at industrial cleaning, of course. “In the fleet-washing sector, highpressure washers with high-performance pumps are indispensable for maintaining large fleets of trucks, buses, and other vehicles,” says Majewski. “These pumps deliver the power needed to remove heavy dirt, oil, and road salt, keeping the vehicles clean and in optimal condition.” Another vital application is in industrial cleaning in manufacturing facilities, says Majewski. “Highperformance pumps are essential for cleaning belts, machinery, floors, and Cleaner Times • January 2025 • 77
other surfaces, ensuring a safe and clean working environment. These pumps are designed to endure the toughest industrial cleaning requirements, providing reliable performance and long-lasting durability.”
EFFICIENCY FIRST (AND LAST)
Can optimal performance and efficiency be severed? Perhaps. It took Michelangelo four years to paint the ceiling of the Sistine Chapel. True, it was with at least one “do over” because he revised his first vision. Sometimes optimal performance is slow and steady, mostly within the realms of custommade products and art. On the other hand, given his health and the contortions required, Michelangelo was efficient. Proficiency must be weighed with outcome to get a true measure of efficiency. Such evaluation also encompasses pumps. “A pump that has a high efficiency percentage in terms of output and operating pressure, materials of construction that are heavy duty (in other words, bronze connecting rod versus aluminum), seal options to fit the application, and so on is a high-performance pump,” says Robert Piedade, director of e-commerce at A.R. North America Inc. in Fridley, MN. Annovi Reverberi produces the diaphragm pumps and triplex plunger pumps sold by Piedade’s company. “While both pumps are very different, each can produce variable gpm outputs and pressure.” Each type of pump serves differently. “Diaphragm pumps are often better used where caustic materials are needed to be dispensed,” explains Piedade. “A triplex pump is usually used for high-pressure applications.” One way to identify high-performance pumps is to look to industrial applications where the requirements are “no to minimal downtime” and “long run” time, says Piedade. Such applications include “machine tool cooling, EDM (electrical discharge machining), oil fields, certain food industry applications such 78 • January 2025 • Cleaner Times
as poultry deboning, firefighting UHP (ultra-high pressure), ship hull cleaning, dust suppression, and misting in industrial applications.” Amazing, in a sense, but oil fields and poultry deboning are both supported by pumps that merit the highperformance label. Such convergence brings us back to reliability, which the pumps in the applications share. A pump that pushes processes along with great efficiency but requires frequent maintenance will fail to earn a high-performance rating. Reliability is a must. Piedade says that “in the context of triplex plunger pumps,” the term high performance typically refers to several key characteristics: high pressure, steady flow, durability and reliability, efficiency, and versatility. Let’s take each in turn. High-pressure pumps can generate very high pressures, several thousand psi, explains Piedade. “This makes them suitable for demanding applications
like high-pressure cleaning, hydrostatic testing, and oilfield services.” Steady flow gets around the issue of perturbations almost always undesirable. “The design of triplex plunger pumps, with three plungers operating in sequence, ensures a continuous and smooth flow of liquid,” explains Piedade. “This reduces pressure pulsations compared to single- or duplex-piston pumps.” Durability and reliability signal pumps built for heavy use, says Piedade. Such pumps make a good match for industrial environments. And “they often feature components like ceramic plungers, high-strength bearings, and corrosion-resistant materials.” Efficiency in the context of energy use is important, too. High-performance pumps minimize energy consumption while maximizing output, says Piedade. “This efficiency is crucial for applications that require consistent, highpressure fluid movement.” Versatility allows the pumps to contribute to “a wide range of applications,
from industrial cleaning and waterjetting to agricultural irrigation and oil and gas drilling,” says Piedade. No matter which facet of a pump gets cited first when it’s described as high performance, there is always a common factor: High-performance pumps operate in demanding situations. From water sewage treatment and pumping stations to pipelines, moving a high volume of fluid (or gas) in a predictable and safe way involves high-performance pumps. The pumps sold by Piedade’s company have a backstory that includes their Italian manufacturer and heralds the future. The manufacturer has put a focus on renewable energy and design. It has done so particularly in the agricultural marketplace. To begin with, the company has adopted building structures that operate on between 80 and 100 percent renewable energy. One day in the future, a criterion for a high-performance pump may include operating at top efficiency while tapping only renewable energy sources. CT

hose in the pressure cleaning industry frequently complain about federal taxes. However, more often it is the state and local tax burden that is far greater. What’s worse, many of those state and local laws change from year to year. State and local budgets, which seemingly flirt with disaster even in good times, are in many cases in dire straits today. This is a situation with major implications for every pressure washing contractor and business. Coping with and easing the state and local tax burden means planning, beginning with the income tax.
Every pressure washing business faces an interesting challenge: What happens if business is conducted in more than one state? The state that the business calls home generally wants to tax every dollar of income. Every other state where it does business wants to tax income earned in their state. Does that mean paying taxes on the same income twice? Fortunately, records and planning can ensure there are no overlooked or duplicate payments for taxable income earned in another jurisdiction and no tax bill for any business operating as a pass-through entity such as an S corporation or partnership.
THE COMPLEXITIES OF TAXING INCOME
ACROSS STATE LINES
Today state income taxes can cost a business from two and a half to almost ten percent or more of its pretax income. That is not an insignificant amount, regardless of the state of the economy.
It’s not only income taxes that differ from one taxing jurisdiction to another. There are also those cumbersome sales and use taxes. And while some businesses may not be required to collect sales taxes on their sales of products
for underreporting. A use tax review can be especially advantageous for businesses that lack centralized oversight or accounting systems to track the appropriate data.
LABOR LAWS AND TAXES
Federal, state, and even local laws dealing with employees change from year to year, and all usually impact a pressure cleaning operation’s tax bill. While these laws are designed to be beneficial for employees, employers are finding it increasingly difficult to remain profitable. Fortunately, many states have created programs to compensate businesses for expenses related to minimum wage law changes, paid family leave, and other workers’ incentive programs dealing with employees.
PROPERTY TAXES
One tax often overlooked and frequently overpaid is the tax assessed on
TAX SAVINGS AT THE STATE AND LOCAL LEVELS by Mark E. Battersby
Every pressure cleaning business owner should also be aware of whether those deductions they’re planning to claim on their federal tax returns will receive the same treatment at the state level. While many states follow federal tax rules, some states decouple from certain federal tax provisions. Also keep in mind that although 44 states levy a corporate income tax, many businesses are not subject to it because they are taxed as passthrough businesses where income is reported as the owner/shareholder’s personal income.
or services, they usually must pay them on some of their purchases. It’s all too easy today to get caught ignoring the “use” tax due on purchases made in another taxing jurisdiction, via the internet or where sales taxes should have been collected but weren’t. Calculating the use tax can be even more complicated if an item is used in multiple jurisdictions. And while some transactions might be exempt from use tax, state rules vary. Businesses that do not have procedures in place to properly calculate and remit use tax are at risk of fines
the property and—in many places—the business’s equipment and other assets. Surprisingly, few pressure washing contractors or businesses challenge their property tax bill. While the property tax rate can’t be questioned, the assessment of the business’s property (the value placed on it by the local assessor) can and probably should be challenged. Whether that property tax billing period overlaps the other tax deadlines or not, investigating and possibly challenging the value placed on the pressure cleaning operation’s assets can frequently reap savings year after year. Cleaner Times • January 2025 • 81
STATE TAX CREDITS AND INCENTIVES
State and local governments often incentivize businesses through tax breaks, grant programs, or businessfriendly policies. Is the pressure cleaning operation taking advantage of all the tax credits and incentives they qualify for? Conducting a review of the available programs can reveal real opportunities for savings. Credit and incentive packages are often offered by economic development agencies or other state and local agencies. They are usually based on the economic benefits promised by the applying business, such as job creation, job retention, and/or capital investment that will be brought to the area. Obviously, awareness of the tax credit or incentive programs is necessary before an application can be made or negotiations begin to obtain the best possible credit and incentive package.
OUT OF THE BOX
An increasing number of businesses invest in, accept as payments, or use virtual currency or cryptocurrency for purchases. Many states have yet to issue guidance on the tax treatment of virtual currency or cryptocurrency making. Where the issue has been addressed, do they conform with the latest federal tax rules? Is the purchase of virtual currency or cryptocurrency a taxable sale under the state’s sales and use tax rules? Or, how should purchases of tangible personal property or services made with cryptocurrency be treated? Delving into the treatment of these new currency options in both those states that haven’t addressed the issue and those where rules are already on the books can mean avoiding expensive penalties.
THE POTENTIAL SAVINGS PITFALLS
The road to savings on the state and local levels contains a number of potential pitfalls such as the following: • Independent contractors—Those in the pressure washing industry have long appreciated the absence of payroll taxes and the withholding burden associated with 82 • January 2025 • Cleaner Times
employees but non-existent with independent contractors. Individuals, for their part, favor the flexibilty, freedom, and perceived tax benefits of an independent contractor. Unfortunately, it is not only the IRS and the U.S. Department of Labor that are changing the definition of who is and who isn’t an independent contractor. A growing number of states are adopting the controversial—and stricter—definition of independent contractors originating in California but driving up payroll costs elsewhere. • Conforming to federal tax reform—The soon-to-expire Tax Cuts and Jobs Act (TCJA) lowered the federal corporate tax rate and made significant changes to the cost recovery possibilities and other business deductions. The states have largely settled on TCJA conformity, but each year a number of taxing jurisdictions institute changes or adapt specific provisions. • Pass-through entities and taxes— Pass-through entities are the hybrids of business taxation: business entities for which tax liability is generally attributable to the amount of individual income tax imposed on partners, members, owners, or shareholders. However, states are increasingly applying corporate income tax concepts to pass-through entities operating in more than one state, and it’s often unclear how these concepts are applied in each jurisdiction.
almost a separate entity, this generally is not easy. It can also be expensive. Overhead, salaries of employees who work both in and out of the state, expenses, etc. must be allocated to those locations. However, despite the problems, the use of separate accounting can result in significant tax savings, especially if the operation in the state produces little or no income and the state has a high tax rate. Those pressure cleaning operations that don’t operate in more than one state or tax jurisdiction can also benefit from separate accounting. While a business must compute their taxable income using the same method used in keeping their books, they are not required to use the same method when preparing their financial statements. Many small businesses find it easier to use the cash method of accounting for tax purposes, while others use the accrual method. The accrual method, however, is the preferred method for both tax purposes and financial reporting because it gives a clearer picture of the financial status of the business.
SEPARATE ACCOUNTING
KEEPING ABREAST OF STATE AND LOCAL TAXES
While most pressure cleaning operations take a general approach to apportion income, many states allow the use of “separate accounting.” Separate accounting is pretty much what it sounds like: a second set of books. With separate accounting, the business computes its net income based on the income and expenses in the state. Unless the operation in the state is
FILING
When is the pressure cleaning business required to file a tax return in another state? Even that becomes a complicated question and one that depends on the rules in that particular state. Of course, once a business has property located in a state, performs services in another state, or has employees in a state (or some other similar connection), the operation must generally file tax returns and pay taxes. Not filing could result in penalties, interest, and a host of other tax problems.
State and local taxes are varied and in constant flux. However, keeping abreast of the pressure cleaning operation’s state and local tax obligations can, while complex, be worth the effort. Failing to keep abreast can significantly affect the operation’s cash flow. As always, professional guidance is recommended. CT

ho can tell what will happen in 2025? Not any one of us. Yet we each have an outlook—positive, neutral, or negative—for the New Year. industry may be unique, but variables affecting the national economy become factors specific to each industry. So, let’s look to the Bureau of Economic Analysis (BEA.gov), the statistical and independent division of the U.S. Department of Commerce. BEA updates its analyses regularly, and as we write we have the numbers from mid-November 2024.
Start with a broad look at the nation. According to BEA, gross domestic product for the third quarter of 2024 increased at an annual rate of 2.8 percent. Disposable personal income (DPI), however, was slow to grow, if it grew at all. A gain in DPI in September 2024 was put at 0.3 percent. The smidgen of growth in DPI helps explain the much-reported sentiment among consumers that they cannot
keep pace with the cost of living. When consumers believe they have less disposable income, they will pull back on paying for products and services beyond necessities. Consequently, flat or small increases in DPI can reduce the number of customers for contractors. Fewer jobs for contractors translate eventually to fewer needs for equipment and ancillaries that contractors deploy,
which reduces sales for distributors and manufacturers. Of course, it’s a global economy. Thus, BEA also reports on international economic accounts. The picture is not rosy. U.S. international transactions continued to put the U.S. side of the ledger at a loss, and the loss was growing. For instance, it grew at more than 10 percent in a single quarter (between quarters one and two in 2024). The U.S. international
investment position also went further into negative territory, according to BEA. The U.S. has a big and growing debt, and the debt service consumes a great deal of money. It factors into interest rates and lending practices in a way that makes it more difficult for businesses to obtain the capital they require for new ventures. The plateauing or slowing innovation may result from difficulties accessing capital. Cleaner Times • January 2025 • 85
Trade is not working in favor of the United States. The data from the BEA show, for instance, that the monthly trade deficit jumped from a negative $70.8 billion for August 2024 to a negative $84.4 billion for September 2024. Foreign direct investment in U.S. businesses also was in quite steep decline. Between 2014 and 2022, the average annual investment was $265.6 billion, according to BEA. But it went down to $148.8 billion in 2023. The foregoing data summaries are among the financial indicators that businesses in all sectors consider when looking ahead. Fortunately, there are indicators that are more positive. The pause in much economic activity that occurred 2020 through 2022 resulted in less demand for natural gas (and other fuels). Fuel prices remain steady or lower in many areas. According to the U.S. Energy Information Administration (EIA.gov), there is ample fuel. Moreover, the incoming president has promised to push for more energy production. Energy prices should not soar even with the normal cold start to the year. (And many parts of the nation expect a warmer than normal winter.) Stable energy prices provide a great boost to business and industry. So, let the optimism begin there. The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS.gov) provides detailed information about overall U.S. employment and trends. For the year ending September 30, 2024, the increase in compensation for employees was down to 3.9 percent from 4.3 percent for the previous year. Prospective employees may want much higher wages. But meeting compensation requests will not be difficult enough to impede hiring. Stability in wage growth also translates into better employee retention because onboard employees do not expect to find higher paychecks elsewhere. Workforce stability enables businesses to retain well-trained employees and focus on growing stronger and in new ways. Thus, another positive for the future. 86 • January 2025 • Cleaner Times
INDUSTRY-SPECIFIC VIEW—POSITIVE
“Caution” might be the operative word for 2025. The industry members we queried about their outlook were not prepared to share it for the most part. (Let’s hope it’s so good they want to hold their cards close to the vest.) The team at Wood Defender/ Standard Paints Inc., which is based in Mansfield, TX, however, did get together to reflect on what may come. Laurel McEuen, the marketing director at the company, shares their thoughts— sentiments that include a healthy dose of all things positive. Begin with optimism. “What makes us most optimistic about the powerwashing and cleaning industry in 2025 is the rising awareness among homeowners and property managers of the importance of regular maintenance for outdoor structures,” says McEuen. Realizing the full lifespan of structures has become important in every realm. It results in cost savings for owners, and it reduces waste and energy use because replacement entails energyconsuming disposal and rebuilds. “As more people invest in the longevity of their outdoor wood surfaces, the demand for reliable power washing and high-quality, exterior oil-based wood staining products will only grow,” explains McEuen. She adds the investment by consumers is being met by increasing professionalism among service and product providers. With members of the industry committed to training and certification, “Consumers are gaining access to expert services that provide consistent, high-quality results,” explains McEuen. “For stain manufacturers this trend represents a great opportunity to collaborate more closely with powerwashing professionals as their work lays the foundation for effective staining.” To be sure, just as there is no garden without weeds, there are no businesses without a few concerns. The reality of challenges to be met remains a constant. “One potential concern is the growing emphasis on environmental regulations,” says McEuen. Power washing and staining industries must be ready
to “adapt quickly to ensure they can continue offering services that meet consumer expectations.” To keep pace with and stay ahead of expectations, McEuen’s company retains a research and development staff that includes a compliance director. A full team of coating chemists is also in place. The need for “ongoing education and professional standards” is a concern, too, says McEuen. “Some providers may not be fully prepared to meet customers’ needs, which can impact the quality of surface preparation and ultimately, staining results.” There are broad implications for the reflection on standards. All businesses benefit from them. Can we expect more standardization in 2025? The professional organizations representing our industry continue to develop them and update as needed. “Effective training and education protect the reputation of and general attitude toward the industry,” says McEuen. “A focus on eco-conscious practices and professional training can alleviate challenges and create opportunities.” McEuen explains that her team converges on a good outlook for our industry. “The power-washing and cleaning industry has shown impressive resilience and growth in recent years, and we see a strong alignment between our work in exterior oilbased staining and the goals of powerwashing professionals.” In fact, it is “synergy” that helps make the outlook doubly bright, explains McEuen. “Power washing plays a critical role in preparing surfaces for staining by removing dirt, debris, and organic growth, which allows our products to adhere more effectively and deliver long-lasting results. “This synergy not only enhances the value of both services but also meets homeowners’ demands for durable, well-maintained outdoor spaces,” continues McEuen. “We expect continued growth, driven by the public’s emphasis on both outdoor living spaces and the importance of preventative maintenance.” CT
CREATING A MARKETING PLAN IS IMPORTANT by Diane M. Calabrese

elief in a product or service is the starting point for a manufacturer, distributor, or contractor. But confidence is only step one in making the sale. This is 2025, and as much as one satisfied customer talking to people leads to more buyers, word-of-mouth advertising alone cannot sustain any except the most unique businesses. A business must have a marketing plan. Successful veteran members of our industry confirm the need and scope. “Every business has to have a website,” says Mike Hilborn, president of RTD Services in Saint Paul, MN. “And it must be kept up to date and re-created regularly, too.” There’s a difference between being up to date and re-creation. The former demands near daily attention. The latter involves attention to platform, basic design, and ancillary maintenance. “Everything is changing so quickly, and to be competitive, your customers need to be able to interact with you in the easiest possible way,” explains Hilborn. But there’s more to be done. “A second ‘must have’ is good Google reviews,” says Hilborn. “And you may have to have a service help with this.” Hilborn explains that taking the route of hiring a consultant has been helpful at times and not at other times. He gives us an account of his experience. “I have not had a lot of luck with consultants in this area,” says Hilborn. “I have had some success with consultants when it comes to how to run my company well and how to be a great sales organization. However, with advertising it has been a disappointment.” Hilborn recommends doing what works. That demands that an owner take the initiative to find out which approaches bring results. “The biggest thing with advertising and marketing is to know what is actually working,” says Hilborn. “Ask every caller seeking a bid or quote, how did they find you? At the end of the year, analyze the data to see what is actually working. Few things in business are more important.”
Know what works. Don’t guess. Above all, be ready to change methods. Many books have been written about public speaking. They advise would-be speakers how to connect with their audience. Usually, one of the first recommendations centers on finding a way to assess the audience. In other words, if the delivery isn’t eliciting a response, or people are fidgeting and yawning—or worse, someone is sleeping in the second row—be prepared to change the delivery. The message is clear that the audience has been lost. Keeping the audience after finding the audience is what it takes to keep selling. Yes, to keep selling even superior products and services. “The one ‘must-have’ in any marketing plan is a deep understanding of the target audience,” says Missy Ordiway, business development manager at Deco Products Inc. in Denver, CO. “Knowing who they are, what they need, and how they think shapes every marketing decision, ensuring strategies are relevant, resonant, and ultimately effective.” The “resonant” recommendation deserves a closer look. A loud and clear message to the target group is made so because there’s no ambiguity. The product or service being advertised is tied to the company doing the advertising. It is not enough for a prospective buyer to conclude a hot-water machine is what he or she needs. The potential buyer must also decide he requires a specific brand and model. What makes the seller of a product or service the best choice? If being the best choice is not being conveyed by outreach to customers, the seller could be losing opportunities for sales while generously advertising on behalf of competitors. To develop a successful marketing plan, a business owner must have clarity about what’s being sold (purpose) and to whom. Again, consultants may or may not be helpful. What’s Ordiway’s perspective on consultants? “It depends on the product, service, and resources available,” she explains. “In-house teams offer Cleaner Times • January 2025 • 89
brand familiarity and control, while consultants bring specialized expertise and fresh perspectives.” It’s a matter of matching the strategy to the goal. “For complex or niche markets, a consultant’s insights can be invaluable,” says Ordiway. “For wellunderstood markets, in-house may be more efficient. Often, a mix of both yields the best results.”
PRODUCT, PRODUCT, PRODUCT
Never forget what it’s about. The product and service is a form of product. “First and foremost, you have to have a product to market,” says Doug Rucker, owner of DougRuckerStore.com in Porter, TX. “The product can be a physical one like a pressure washer. It could be a service, like pressure washing, or it could be yourself.” In the early part of this century, the characterization of an economy that’s
“knowledge based” took hold. The descriptor has fallen from use. But knowledge, as Rucker explains, is still a product that can be sold. Consultants sell knowledge. Members of our industry can do the same in person, through structured seminars or events and through fee-based giveand-take in the digital world. Most important is that there is a product, always. “If you don’t have something for the buyer to see, touch, and/or feel, then you don’t have anything to market or sell,” says Rucker. Unless encounters—in person or via a digital carrier—result in sales, the number of encounters is nothing more than a tally signifying nothing. For instance, a website can be made so spellbinding—via graphics, color schemes, three-D simulation, and so on—that it can attract many visitors. Just be sure the visitors are coming

to find and buy products and not merely have a look around. As for hiring a consultant to develop a marketing plan, there’s no fast rule. “It all depends on the in-house staff and if they have the knowledge and experience to create a marketing plan for the product or service they are selling,” says Rucker. “Larger companies will be able to have in-house staff that does most of the creating and carrying out the marketing plan but will oftentimes still need consulting,” explains Rucker. “For smaller companies it could be more fiscally responsible to hire a consultant that can create and implement a marketing plan.” Small companies need not go it alone in practice. An abundance of free information is available from the U.S. Small Business Administration. At SBA.gov businesses find structured plans and templates to follow. Two particularly good resources are “Marketing and sales” (https:// www.sba.gov/business-guide/ manage-your-business/marketingsales) and “Market research and competitive analysis” (https://www.sba.gov/ business-guide/plan-your-business/ market-research-competitive-analysis). The marketing and sales primer includes many recommendations that will spur thinking. For example, there’s the recommendation to consider what the competitive advantage of a product is. What distinguishes it from the competition? The distinguishing features go way beyond better or cost effective. They include attributes many customers may seek, such as environmentally friendly (green) and U.S. made. And there’s the reminder in the marketing and sales primer to evaluate effectiveness of the marketing plan, not only on total sales but also on ROI [return on investment]. Keep an accurate accounting of the cost of the plan. That makes it possible to determine whether or not it was a good investment. Finally, keep in mind the subtle dimensions of a marketing plan. Executed correctly, the plan pulls all
the elements of selling together. For instance, when a customer calls or texts after viewing a product at a website, make sure there is someone ready to respond with competence and courtesy. The market research and competitive analysis primer includes the necessary reminders that there must be a demand for a product or service. The best marketing plan cannot overcome the constraints of a region in which there are too few buyers due to economic conditions or a mismatch between product and place.
CUSTOMER FIRST
Verifying a region has prospective customers who can afford a product is still secondary to ensuring they want to buy the product. Know who the buyer is. “The one element that transcends all marketing plans is an in-depth understanding of the customer,” says Carol Taylor, director of marketing at StoneAge Inc. in Durango, CO. “Regardless of the product, service, or industry, the cornerstone of any effective marketing strategy lies in truly knowing your audience—who they are, what they value, what their challenges are, and how they make decisions.” Taylor cautions that to understand the customer, the effort must go deeper than the common ways of segmenting a population. “It’s not just about generalized demographics, but a deeper insight into prospective customers’ motivations, desires, and pain points,” she says. The goal is to align the solution— product or service—being offered with the specific needs of customers. That alignment makes a “powerful connection” with potential buyers, explains Taylor. “This customer-centric approach acts as the foundation for everything else in the marketing plan,” says Taylor. “Messaging becomes more relevant, the channels you choose to communicate through are more effective, and the content you create speaks directly to their needs.” The result of a customer-centric approach is an understanding of
customers that enables the creation of “personalized, resonant marketing,” says Taylor. Such marketing “not only grabs attention but fosters lasting relationships and drives meaningful engagement.” It’s all about “putting the customer at the heart of a marketing strategy,” says Taylor. It’s a strategy that sets a company apart from the competition and sustains success. The plan itself is not the movie (fictional) version of something that gets written on a paper napkin following a burst of inspiration. It is structured and more. “For me, when creating a marketing plan, there are certain elements that are must-haves,” says Taylor. “Executive summary, target audience, customer personas, value propositions, goals and objectives, strategies, distribution plan [or plans], timelines, and KPIs [key performance indicators] must all be included.”
The elements Taylor lists overlap with key components of a business plan. Assuredly, the purpose of a business is to sell a product, service, or both and to make a profit. The overlap reminds us that a business and a marketing plan are hand in glove to each other. Moreover, the fit between the two plans must be as precise as possible. A new set of eyes teaches us a lot. We get a fresh look in many ways, such as when spending time with a small child who is seeing the world anew. Consultants can bring the same. Besides fresh perspectives, consultants “often have broader industry experience, access to cutting-edge tools and trends, and the ability to analyze the market with an outsider’s objectivity,” says Taylor. Collaboration between in-house and outside experts may be just the right approach. Each business owner ultimately decides how to create a marketing plan. What’s important is to create one. CT
