A Year-Round Welcome

Where the Atlantic Ocean and the Chesapeake Bay meet, the coastal city of Virginia Beach promises visitors a unique chance to “Live the Life.” With pristine natural wonders, freshly caught seafood, freshly picked local ingredients and a vibrant downtown and arts district, Virginia Beach consistently ranks among the country’s best beach destinations. Explore our districts and get a taste of what your vacation memories will be like.

With “Beach” in our name, long, warm days spent soaking in the sun and surf between Memorial Day and Labor Day might be the first thing that comes to mind when planning a trip to our seaside city. While our pristine beaches and abundant natural waterways make us an ideal summer destination, the fun doesn’t stop when the days grow shorter. In fact, it is in the cooler months that much of our coastal culture truly comes alive. With year-round mild temperatures, ample winter wildlife adventures, seasonal coastal cuisine and a decidedly more “local” vibe, you can live the life in Virginia Beach year-round.

COASTAL. COOL. WINTER.

‘Tis the season to trade your snow shovel for a Virginia Beach vacation and fill your days with slurping down fresh oysters plucked straight from the water beneath you, riding horses on the beach and paying a visit to our largest annual guests — humpback whales! When you have a whole coastal city at your fingertips, a winter getaway to the beach is the gift that keeps on giving.

LIVELY. BEAUTIFUL. SPRING.

As the days grow longer, that can only mean one thing: Spring is in the ocean air. Vacation season is in full bloom in Virginia Beach, bringing with it plenty of new adventures, like fresh, local produce to be picked, miles of pristine coastline to be explored and dolphinfilled waterways to kayak. We hope you packed your appetite for new adventures because spring has sprung.

FUN. BEACHY. SUMMER.

Sunscreen, sunglasses and sunbathing — are you picking up on a trend here? The sun is out and that means summer vacation season is in full swing. Grab a friend or the whole family and claim your spot on the sand. There’s plenty of beach to choose from and even more chances to live the life with us in Virginia Beach all summer long. Make this the summer of you! See you on the sand.

CRISP. COLORFUL. FALL.

Fall is our favorite season to get outside and explore. From our beautiful parks, trails and waterways to the delicious, fresh seafood and unmatched fall festivals, it is the season to unleash your inner child and dive into the leaf pile. The craft beer, fresh produce from local farms and ridiculously beautiful ocean sunrises don’t hurt either.

Explore Our Diverse Regions

With multiple beautiful beaches and eclectic districts, each with its own distinct personality, Virginia Beach is so much more than your run-of-the-mill beach town. Every corner of our coastal city offers unique ways to live the life, whether on the ocean, on the bay or somewhere in between.

Sandbridge is a relaxing and peaceful community where you can truly slow down and unwind on your vacation. Here are some of our favorite ways to live it up during your stay.

Check It Out

VACATION RENTALS

Sandbridge is a hub of vacation rentals and condos in Virginia Beach. From quaint bungalows to 14-bedroom retreats, luxury condos, cottages with yards for kids and pets to play in, and everything in between, Sandbridge has a variety of stunning properties for all budgets and families of all sizes. Local rental companies offer the luxury of a seaside retreat with all the comforts of home.

KAYAKING & STAND-UP PADDLEBOARDING

The unencumbered beauty of Back Bay makes it one of our favorite places to explore by water. There is no shortage of great local outfitters offering guided kayak and paddleboard tours of both Back Bay and the Atlantic Ocean. While beginners are welcome on the bay, the ocean tours, launching at Little Island Park, do require experience.

CAMPING & HIKING

Located in southern Sandbridge, False Cape State Park is a mile-wide barrier sandspit between Back Bay and the Atlantic Ocean. The park offers primitive camping, where you can sleep right on the beach in nearcomplete isolation. With no public vehicle access, False Cape can only be reached by hiking, biking, small boats or the park’s beach transport and tram services through the neighboring Back Bay National Wildlife Refuge.

With 15 hiking and biking trails, varying in length and ranging from easy to difficult, there are many ways to explore one of the last remaining undeveloped areas on the East Coast. We’d recommend navigating the entire 15.3 miles of trails in the park, where you will experience both ocean and bay beaches, dunes, maritime forests, marshes and wooded swamps, all in one visit.

FAT-TIRE BIKING

If you think navigating a bike down our wide, sandy beaches sounds like an impossible feat, you have to try it out on a fat-tire bike, which can be rented from one of the area’s equipment outfitters. From the Oceanfront beaches to the Chesapeake Bay, there may be no better view than biking along the water’s edge, and the wide tires of these bikes make riding on the wet sand as easy as riding on pavement.

WILDLIFE VIEWING

With 9,175 acres, the Back Bay National Wildlife Refuge is made up of barrier islands, dunes, beach woodland, freshwater marshes, maritime forests, ponds and ocean beaches, and is situated on a thin strip of coastline between Back Bay and the Atlantic Ocean. More than 300 species call the park home, offering some of the best birding opportunities on the East Coast.

With its many hotels, dining and entertainment options, the Oceanfront is where the action is. Explore the famous 3-mile-long Virginia Beach Boardwalk, which is perfect for rollerblading, jogging or bike riding. Enjoy live music, street performers, outdoor cafés and food vendors on Atlantic Avenue. For a day on the water, the Rudee Inlet marina area is popular for water sports, fishing and waterfront dining. Sunbathe rs come for the wide, sandy beaches, surfers come for the waves and everyone comes for the unforgettable experience of a classic day at the beach.

3 Spots You Can’t Miss at the Oceanfront

The Virginia Beach Oceanfront is a hub of cool drinks, good food and live music, all within a beach cruiser’s ride from our sandy beaches. From unique shops to unbeatable seafood, this place is a must on any Virginia Beach itinerary. Here are a few of our favorite spots to get you started.

1- ATLANTIC AVENUE

For a mix of eclectic coastal finds and great dining options, it’s hard to beat Atlantic Avenue. From classic beach staples like Sunsations to charming boutique clothing and gift shops, there’s a little something for everyone. For a shopper’s paradise, check out Beach Bodies, with great styles perfect for a sunny vacation, and Bargain Beachwear for a huge selection of beach attire at a great price. Finish the day with dinner at one of the endless eateries on the strip. For food and fun, you can’t go wrong with indoor shuffleboard at Beachside Social or the open-air beachside vibes of Ocean 27.

2- RUDEE INLET

At the south end of the Oceanfront, Rudee Inlet is the go-to spot for water sports. Head out on a fishing charter to reel in a big one, feel the wind on your face as you glide across the water on a

Jet Ski and catch a seagull’s-eye view of the Atlantic Ocean as you parasail over the water. To complete your seaside adventure in tasty fashion, enjoy seafood done right while overlooking the water at Big Sam’s Inlet Cafe & Raw Bar, Rockafeller’s Restaurant or Rudee’s Restaurant & Cabana Bar.

3- VIRGINIA BEACH BOARDWALK

This 28-foot-wide marvel stretches 3 miles and features a separate bike path, ideal for strolling, rollerblading and biking. Entertainment is offered nightly during the summer months, and Oceanfront stages at 7th, 17th, 24th and 31st streets provide live musical acts. Along the Boardwalk, there’s a variety of outdoor restaurants and vendors offering bike and surrey rentals. Nautical sculptures adorn many of the side streets that lead to Atlantic Avenue.

Meet King Neptune

It’s hard to miss the iconic King Neptune statue poised high on the Virginia Beach Boardwalk. Standing 34 feet tall on the beach at 31st Street and Atlantic Avenue, this giant bronze sea god stands watch over the ocean at the gateway to Neptune Park.

Commissioned by the Virginia Beach Neptune Festival as a tribute to the city’s deep ties to the ocean, and constructed entirely through private contributions, the statue was created by Virginia-based artist Paul DiPasquale and unveiled in

September 2005 during the Neptune Festival Boardwalk Weekend. Portrayed rising from the waves with a trident in hand and surrounded by sea creatures, the statue has been a beloved beachside landmark and favorite photo opp ever since.

Whether you’re strolling the Boardwalk or heading to the beach, stop and admire the details and soak up the beach vibes because King Neptune isn’t just a statue — he’s a symbol of the city’s coastal charm and love for the sea.

“King Neptune” (Paul DiPasquale)

For beachgoers looking for kinder, gentler waves, refuge can be found along the calm waters of the Chesapeake Bay in the community known affectionately to locals as Chic’s Beach. From swimming and building sand castles to dolphin watching and volleyball, all the traditional beach rituals are here in a setting that has a decidedly laid-back vibe.

A Day in Chesapeake Bay

10 A.M. - Start your day with a honeycinnamon latte and the morning hash at American Brew, located just steps away from the new Lesner Bridge and “The Canoes” sculpture.

11 A.M. - Head east down Shore Drive to First Landing State Park for a morning hike through preserved marshland dotted with towering bald cypress trees adorned with Spanish moss.

After your hike, head across the street to Fort Story Military Base to climb the steps of the historical Cape Henry Lighthouse.

The climb to the top can be a doozy, but the 360-degree views of the Chesapeake Bay and the Atlantic Ocean are well worth it.

7 P.M. - Head down to Pleasure House Road for a walk along the Chesapeake Bay at Chic’s Beach After a busy day, you can’t beat relaxing by the water’s edge at sunset, as the last rays of the day sparkle on the water.

9 P.M. - Close the night out by catching a show at HK on the Bay, just a couple of blocks off the water. The intimate setting puts you right in the middle of the action for some of the best live music around. Enjoy local beers on tap and dance the night away to some of our favorite local bands.

2 P.M. - Refuel with a pit stop at Commonwealth Brewing Company, where they serve up mouthwatering craft creations in a former firehouse.

With ample outdoor patio space, lawn games and food trucks, this is a great place to spend an afternoon outside.

3:30 P.M. - Head back across the Lesner Bridge to Tula Paddle Sports, where you can rent kayaks and standup paddleboards for an afternoon exploring the creeks and waterways of Broad Bay, including First Landing State Park, which is only a halfmile from where you’ll launch.

5:30 P.M. - A day of hiking and paddling your way through the bay area can really build up an appetite. Mermaid Winery, the first urban winery in the state of Virginia, offers over 800 wines from around the world and a menu featuring fresh local ingredients.

Just a few minutes outside of the windswept dunes of Sandbridge sit 23,000 acres of farmland known to locals as Pungo. A drive through this expansive agricultural community delivers a rural serenity and countryside charm that feels worlds away from the bustle of the Oceanfront. Stop along your journey at any one of the area’s roadside stands or, for a truly Pungo experience, pick your own bushel of fresh berries, produce or even a bouquet of wildflowers.

Unique Experiences in Pungo

One of our favorite activities in Virginia Beach is to head down to Pungo and spend some time exploring the rural farming community. As if the expansive agricultural landscape just a few miles from the beach isn’t surprising enough, just wait until you get there. Here are a few of our favorite ways to spend a day in Pungo that are far from just an average day on the farm.

BLUE PETE’S DINNER KAYAK TOUR

Take a dinner kayaking cruise to Blue Pete’s for some delicious fresh seafood. At sunset, you’ll float through Back Bay Wildlife Refuge, watching for wildlife along the way.

PICK YOUR OWN PRODUCE

Go picking in Pungo for the season’s bounty at one of the area’s many pick-your-own farms.

Fashion-forward shoppers can explore designer labels at Town Center’s upscale department stores, while those seeking unique finds can peruse boutique shops, like Eclectic Design Florist & Gift, Commonwealth and Merriment on Main.

DRINKS

Twist Martini & Associates is the spot if you’re looking to end your evening with a couple of craft cocktails. We like the Bee Sting, with honey-habanero moonshine, fresh lemon and simple syrup in a honey-drizzled glass. Sip on one alongside live music a few nights a week.

Named after a colonial-era thoroughfare running east to west through central Virginia, Charlottesville-based brewer Three Notch’d Brewery & Craft Kitchen is a Virginia staple. Now operating a new space out of Town Center, taste their award-winning flagships and seasonal brews like the 40 Mile IPA and the Jack’s Java Espresso Sprout. The food here is top notch, too.

DESSERTS

Candy connoisseurs can find some of our favorite local confections at The Royal Chocolate. With their melt-in-your-mouth truffles and chocolate-covered fruit made right there in the shop, it’s worth a visit for the aromas alone.

Don’t leave Town Center without stopping by one of the newest additions, Macaron Tart. With allnatural, made-from-scratch French macarons and tarts, this womanowned bakery prepares small batches in house to ensure that the quality is always high, and it shows in every bite.

ARTS & ENTERTAINMENT

Sandler Center for the Performing Arts is a masterpiece of acoustical engineering that brings acts from all over the world, including national recording artists, world-renowned symphonies and orchestras, and theatrical masterpieces.

artistic expression of all varieties. It has become an integral part of the local arts community.

For fans of the visual arts, don’t miss the nationally acclaimed Jones Art Gallery, with original paintings from three generations of the Jones family. Their work has been featured on the covers of nine New York Times bestsellers, including works by John Grisham and Ian McEwan, and received artwork credits in over 100 million books to date.

TOPGOLF

MASER PROJECTS

Irish artist Maser was welcomed to our city for an artist’s residency in 2017. See the colorful and geometrically pleasing art installations he created around town, including a large mural, titled “People and Plants,” on the back of the Virginia Museum of Contemporary Art; a sculptural installation across the street from the Virginia Beach Convention Center; and a performing-arts stage in ViBe Park on Cypress Avenue.

MERMAID WINERY MURAL

With artwork featured all around town, at places like Java Surf and Star of the Sea Church, as well as many murals in nearby Norfolk, OnieTonie has quickly become one of the most recognized and popular artists in the region. The newest installment of his signature fish design is at Mermaid Winery on Shore Drive.

MILLE COLORI

Translating to “1,000 Colors,” the Virginia Museum of Contemporary Art’s “Mille Colori” certainly lives up to its name. This breathtaking 14foot glass chandelier by renowned artist Dale Chihuly is made up of 520 separate blown-glass pieces and hangs as a permanent fixture in the sunlit Rodriguez Pavilion.

ANTICIPATION

Standing watch at Grommet Island Park at the Oceanfront, the first beach playground designed for adults and children of all physical abilities, “Anticipation” was created by local artist Richard Stravitz. The bronze sculpture was inspired by Josh Thompson, an avid Virginia Beach surfer diagnosed with ALS in 2006. More of Stravitz’s work can be seen at his studio near the Oceanfront, where he sculpts six days a week.

WAVE

Jeff Laramore’s soaring piece is a 38-foot stainless-steel sculpture marking the entrance to the Laskin Gateway, providing a strong sense of arrival at the Virginia Beach Oceanfront. At night, an orchestra of LED lights change and illuminate different aspects of this nautical-inspired sculpture.

LIGHT GARDEN

Located in the Princess Anne Commons Gateway Park, Dale Eldred’s “Light Garden” features 32 sun-refracting glass panels arranged to resemble a grove of trees and to illustrate the movement of light throughout the day.

Explore Our Parks

Whether you’re into invigorating hikes, adventurous trails or scenic routes, the natural areas have you covered in Virginia Beach.

At First Landing State Park, you can hike through seven distinct ecosystems. In fact, this registered Natural Landmark was the site of the European settlers’ first landing in 1607 and has since become Virginia’s most visited state park. Walk along 1.5 miles of beachfront to take in the beauty of dunes and tidal marsh. Or follow 20 miles of interpretive hiking, running and biking trails through protected habitats, including one of the most endangered types in the world — the maritime forest. Along each trail you’ll encounter a different scene, from freshwater ponds and Spanish moss to stunning views of the Chesapeake Bay.

Farther south in Sandbridge, the Back Bay National Wildlife Refuge provides incredible scenic hikes along several trails through dunes, woodland, marshes and ocean beaches. Given its remote location, the park has become a haven for loggerhead sea turtles, peregrine falcons and bald eagles, all of which you’ll have the opportunity to encounter as you explore the refuge — a local favorite!

Feeling extra adventurous? Hike through the refuge to reach False Cape State Park, accessible only by foot or boat. Featuring 6 miles of pristine beaches, False Cape is a wildlife watcher’s delight and a destination for more than 300 species of birds, including a snow-goose population of 10,000.

5 Places to Camp in Virginia Beach

1- FIRST LANDING STATE PARK

Two hundred campsites are nestled on the northern beachfront side of the park. Options vary from small sites for tent camping to those with water and electricity hookups that can accommodate 50-foot RVs. The south side of the park has 20 rustic cabins with running water and electricity, as well as heating and air conditioning.

2- FALSE CAPE STATE PARK

Go primitive camping right on the beach! This site can only be reached by hiking, biking, small boats and the park’s tram service, so be sure to pack light!

3- VIRGINIA BEACH KOA CAMPGROUND

Just a quick drive from the Oceanfront. Choose from sites for tents, RVs and deluxe or rustic cabins, depending on your need for modern amenities.

4- HOLIDAY TRAV-L-PARK

Book one of 700 traditional camping sites, RV spaces and rustic cabins just a bike ride from the beach. Includes an 18-hole miniature-golf course, swimming pools and a dog park.

5- NORTH BAY SHORE CAMPGROUND

Virginia Beach Cycling & Bike Trails

Virginia Beach has over 200 miles of bikeways and trails, not counting trails in our 230 parks and natural areas.

Plus, there are 23 miles of unpaved paths in two state parks and a federal wildlife refuge. With new paths, lanes and routes being added regularly, it is no surprise that we are frequently voted one of America’s healthiest cities and that our residents love to wheel around.

Water Activities

With miles of beautiful oceanfront, the Chesapeake Bay and meandering inland waterways, Virginia Beach is an aquatic playground for fun and adventure. Paddle, sail, cruise, surf and swim to experience the beautiful waters of this vibrant coastal community.

STAND-UP PADDLEBOARDING

Hop aboard a stand-up paddleboard and explore one of the last great saltmarsh habitats on the East Coast. Rent equipment from a local outfitter and let the adventure begin.

SURFING

Surfing is woven into the fabric of who we are in Virginia Beach, home of the esteemed Coastal Edge East Coast Surfing Championships — the longest continuously running surf competition in the world. The best of the best compete here each August, including more than 200 of the world’s top professional surfers, as well as an estimated 300 amateur surfers. In addition to the competition, visitors enjoy food and drink concessions and live music on the beach.

Not a pro yet? Our calmer, gentler waves make diving in and catching your first wave easy. Surf shops offer equipment rentals, lessons and camps that will have you upright and in the water in no time.

KAYAKING

Kayaking is one of the best ways to explore our waterways. Whether you have your own or opt to rent from an outfitter, it’s easy to get in a kayak and get going in Virginia Beach.

PARASAILING

For a completely new perspective and spectacular views of the Virginia Beach Oceanfront, Rudee Inlet is a great place to take off for parasailing tours. If you haven’t experienced the serenity that comes with floating 1,000 feet above the water, there’s no better time than now to try it!

Top 10 Places to Take Sunrise & Sunset Photos

To see the sun rise over the Atlantic Ocean and set over the Chesapeake Bay in the same day is an experience that is uniquely Virginia Beach. Whether you are using a camera or phone, you’re guaranteed to get the perfect shots at these places.

SUNRISE

A sunrise in Virginia Beach is a sight you won’t soon forget. With the world still sound asleep, the show is about to begin — and you have a front-row seat.

SANDBRIDGE BEACH

Watch through the dancing sea oats on the dunes of Sandbridge as the waking sun glistens on the morning surf. Whether you take in the daybreak on Little Island Pier, from the beaches of Back Bay National Wildlife Refuge or while relaxing on the deck of your vacation rental, you can’t go wrong.

KING NEPTUNE STATUE

For the quintessential Virginia Beach shot, we love getting King Neptune himself in the foreground with the colors of the sunrise peeking out from behind him.

VIRGINIA BEACH FISHING PIER

Like King Neptune, the Virginia Beach Fishing Pier is a local icon that makes for a great sunrise photo. Whether you actually take your shot on the pier or you get the silhouette of the pier from farther down the beach, it always makes for a great picture.

OCEANFRONT HOTELS

Although you can always get a great shot by standing on the beach or Boardwalk, the perspective that comes with our Oceanfront hotel balconies will bring it to the next level — literally.

CROATAN BEACH

This beach is a favorite of our local surfers, who often head out before the sun comes up to catch the waves. Catching their graceful riding in your pic makes a quintessential beach image.

SUNSET

After a busy beach day, you can’t beat a walk along the water’s edge at sunset. While the sun rises over the Atlantic Ocean, the angle of the Chesapeake Bay Beach sets you up perfectly to enjoy the sun setting over the water.

CHIC’S BEACH

Whether taking an evening stroll or setting up a beach chair to take in the show, this is the easiest spot to capture that unforgettable sunset shot in Virginia Beach.

CHESAPEAKE BAY

Get the perfect pic of the last light by dropping a paddleboard or kayak into the water and floating toward the horizon. Be sure to capture the Chesapeake Bay Bridge Tunnel in the background for a classic Virginia Beach touch.

With the bridge in the foreground and the boats of the marina against the sunset in the background, this is one of our favorite marina portraits.

BROAD BAY

At favorite local eateries like The Back Deck, Bubba’s Seafood Restaurant and Chick’s Oyster Bar, you can enjoy a sunset with a side of fresh seafood and delicious drinks while sitting out over the water in the Chesapeake Bay region.

THE NARROWS

The tapering waterway bordering First Landing State Park, known to locals as The Narrows, is one of our favorite hidden spots to snap a beautiful photo over the water.

RUDEE INLET

Fishing in Virginia Beach

With our location abutting both the Chesapeake Bay and the Atlantic Ocean, Virginia Beach fishing offers abundant returns year-round. Opt for the diverse waters of the Chesapeake Bay, the endless opportunity of the Atlantic Ocean or one of many freshwater fishing spots.

Offshore, the 115 fathoms of Norfolk Canyon, just off the coast of Virginia Beach, are where the big fish like billfish and tuna reside. And when we say big, we mean BIG. The largest blue marlin caught in Virginia Beach waters weighed in at a whopping 1,093 pounds.

If you prefer to keep both of your feet on dry land, drop in a line from a pier. With the Virginia Beach Fishing Pier at the Oceanfront and Little Island Pier in Sandbridge, you’ve got options.

One of our favorite ways to get in on the sport is to hop in a canoe or kayak to get even closer to the action. With launching points at Dozier’s Bridge, Owl’s Creek Boat Ramp and many local outfitters, you can be out on the water in no time.

Hop aboard a charter leaving out of the Rudee Inlet and let the boat’s crew take you into the heart of the action. While billfish are released back into the water, you can match wits with the likes of yellowfin tuna, cobia, bluefish, wahoo and more — and take some home with you for a local seafood feast fit for a champion.

The Chesapeake Bay is another hotspot for fishing fanatics. As the largest natural estuary in the United States, the bay is home to 348 species of finfish, including flounder, red drum, cobia and the local-favorite rockfish, all of which can be caught in the summer months.

Take a Swing

Whether you’re looking to drive, chip, putt or ride around in the golf cart holding the cooler, Virginia Beach has what you need to make sure your game stays on par.

GOLF COURSES

The City of Virginia Beach offers four public golf courses, all of which are leased and privately operated and managed, including Red Wing Lake, Kempsville Greens, Stumpy Lake and Virginia Beach National. The last one was designed by golf greats Pete Dye and Curtis Strange and was a Tournament Players Club (TPC) course that is now available for anyone to play.

TOPGOLF

For those who spend more time in the hazards than on the green, swing into your day with brunch and a couple rounds of Topgolf. No matter how high your handicap is, Topgolf has a variety of games that are enjoyable for any skill level.

While you are technically outside, Topgolf is completely covered and open for business rain or shine, making it the perfect option when your usual round of 18 gets rain-checked.

MINI GOLF

If putting around is more your speed, look no further than the Oceanfront, which has miniature golf options that everyone in your group will enjoy. Whether you prefer to play golf among the waterfalls of Shipwreck Golf, Jungle Golf and Pirates Paradise Mini Golf, or even test your luck in one of our indoor, blacklight minigolf options, we have you covered.

Savor Our Coastal Flavors

With its location on the southern tip of the Chesapeake Bay, our coastal community has a seafood-centric culinary culture, boasting a wide array of unique restaurants and delectable fare. With the famously rich waters of the bay, hundreds of inlets snaking through the city and miles of farmland, Virginia Beach is the place for seafood

and locally harvested ingredients — and that’s only the beginning.

From a growing brewery network and our legendary Lynnhaven oysters to local chefs who are constantly pushing what it means to be farm-and seato-table, our culinary scene is truly something to be savored.

WE LOVE OUR SEAFOOD

During the fall and winter months, our regular seafood craze gets even fresher. December and January are the peak seasons for rockfish (striped bass), striper, black sea bass, flounder, speckled trout and blueline tilefish — all available within 50 miles. That’s not surprising though, since the mouth of the Chesapeake Bay is considered to be the largest and most biologically diverse estuary in the U.S., yielding more seafood than any of the country’s other 840 estuaries, making us — and all seafood lovers — incredibly lucky.

5 Iconic

Virginia Beach Flavors

You Have to Try

Our brackish water is home to an amazing array of sea life, and the sandy soil is perfect for growing many edible treasures. The main hallmarks of our coastal cuisine are fresh, seasonal and simply prepared ingredients — often sourced from our own rich farmlands.

1- OYSTERS

Once coveted by the English aristocracy for its size and salinity, the famous Lynnhaven oyster is a local legend that we can’t get enough of, no matter the season. Hop aboard a Pleasure House Oysters boat tour to taste an oyster plucked straight from the water beneath you, or order them how you like from one of our many seafood restaurants.

3- SOFT-SHELL CRAB

Soft-shell crabs are blue crabs whose hard exterior shells have molted, and they are found in abundance in the warming waters of the Chesapeake Bay, starting in the spring. While legend has it that they begin molting after the first full moon of May, the local softshell crab season typically starts in mid-April or early May each year and lasts through September. Whether you enjoy them lightly fried, beneath a perfectly poached egg or atop a spicy bloody mary (like on the popular Bloody Blue at Bay Local Eatery) there’s no shortage of delicious ways to sink your teeth into these mouthwatering delicacies.

2- SHE-CRAB SOUP

She-crab soup is a staple of our coastal cuisine. From the East Coast She-Crab Soup Classic held each April to the numerous local restaurants that feature it on their menus, this dish is everywhere — and for good reason. When in the Sandbridge area, grab a cup at Margie & Ray’s Seafood, Crab House & Raw Bar. A staple since 1964, their she-crab soup has been voted the favorite in Tidewater more than once.

4- ORANGE CRUSH

What better way to cool off during the hot summer months than with a refreshing fruity spirit? Virginia Beach is known for Orange Crushes, and if you’ve visited us before, there is a good chance you’ve already tried one. With its freshly squeezed OJ, triple sec and Sprite, there is no turning back. (They’re like fries: You can’t have just one.) This perfect summer drink first originated at Waterman’s Surfside Grille, but can be found on menus all throughout the city, such as Chix on the Beach and The Shack on 8th.

5- FRESH PUNGO BERRIES

Just a few minutes away from the windswept dunes of Sandbridge sit 23,000 acres of farmland known as Pungo. A drive through this expansive agricultural community delivers a rural serenity and countryside charm that feels worlds away from the bustle of the Oceanfront. Stop along your journey at any one of the area’s roadside stands or, for a truly Pungo experience, pick your own bushel of fresh favorites like strawberries, blueberries and blackberries.

Virginia Beach Distilleries

The craft breweries in Virginia Beach might be better known, but distilling craft spirits became a booming tradition in the region as far back as the 1920s during Prohibition. Today, distilleries in Virginia Beach blend art and science to create an incredible variety of flavors that can be enjoyed in fun tasting rooms and then taken home as souvenirs and gifts.

BEACH VODKA/VIRGINIA BEACH DISTILLING

Beach Vodka has a tasting room in a bright, airy and inland (but appropriately beachy) space near Oceana Air Station. It’s a rescued but new-and-improved brand. The former Beach Vodka closed its doors in 2019, attracting the attention of Stephanie Somers and Tony Gower Jr., who thought it was a loss for the community in which they’d grown up, as well as a business opportunity for them. After research and investment in a high-tech still imported from the Netherlands, the new Beach Vodka opened in July 2022. Unlike some distillers that branch out into flavored products and other types of spirits, Beach Vodka

uses corn-based ingredients and its still to make one thing well: Beach Vodka. It uses its creativity to devise drink recipes such as the Beach Crush, Chick’s Beach Mule, Sandbridge Spritzer and Jetty Margarita.

CHESAPEAKE BAY DISTILLERY

Operating out of an iconic, vintage surf shop, Chesapeake Bay Distillery is serving up vodka and rum that is distilled and bottled in-house. The distillery is known for its spicy Ghost Pepper Infused Vodka and Mutiny Island Vodka, the world’s first breadfruit vodka, featuring tasting notes of honeydew, banana and citrus. This place is truly a paradise for connoisseurs of the clear elixir. Drop by their tasting room to sample each spirit on its own or in a prepared cocktail shooter, such as a lemon drop or a bloody mary.

WATERMAN SPIRITS

At Waterman Spirits, it’s all about pride. Pride in the ingredients in its vodka and pride in the distilling process — all to ensure that owneroperator Mariah Standing can be proud of what she shares with friends, family and guests. The small-batch distillery and tasting room on Atlantic Avenue uses 100% certified organic corn — grown without pesticides, fertilizers or harmful chemicals. So, better tasting for you and better for the environment. Another step toward cleaner, brighter-tasting beverages is using coral-based filtration, which Standing says gives the vodka a smoother taste. In addition to its organic vodka, Waterman produces Waterman Spirits Organic Orange vodka, Organic Grapefruit vodka, The Perfect Crush and others to enjoy in your favorite cocktails.

TARNISHED TRUTH DISTILLING COMPANY

The Historic Cavalier Hotel’s Tarnished Truth Distilling Company is the country’s first craft distillery to be located inside a hotel. The smallbatch distillery’s dynamic portfolio includes their signature Old Cavalier Bourbon, Tarnished Truth High Rye Straight Bourbon Whiskey, Tarnished Truth Bourbon Mash Moonshine, Fourth Handle Coastal American Gin, Old Cavalier Bourbon Cream and AVA Vodka, all of which can be enjoyed in the Hunt Room and Becca Restaurant & Garden — or by taking a bottle home with you. Tarnished Truth also offers private and hourly tours, flight tastings and a private room for dinners, cocktail classes and special occasions.

Sustainable Virginia Beach

With miles of coastline and waterways, state parks, a national wildlife refuge, rural agricultural communities and a diverse population of marine wildlife, the health of our environment is crucial to our daily life in our coastal city.

With organizations like the Research and Conservation Division at the Virginia Aquarium & Marine Science Center, Lynnhaven River NOW and the Chesapeake Bay Foundation, as well as programs like Virginia Green, conservation opportunities abound in Virginia Beach. Whether you want to get your boots in the mud or simply make more environmentally conscious choices, there are many ways to join the effort of keeping Virginia Beach clean and beautiful for years to come.

VIRGINIA GREEN

Visit Virginia Beach is proud to be a supporting partner of the Virginia Green program, our state’s initiative to encourage green tourism practices in all aspects of our tourism industry. Certified Virginia Green Travel Partners have made significant commitments to reduce their generation of waste, reduce their use of water and energy, and embrace other sustainable practices.

You can reduce your own environmental footprint during your Virginia Beach vacation simply by supporting certified Virginia Green partners. You can search for Virginia Green certified businesses throughout visitvirginiabeach.com business listings by selecting Virginia Green as a category.

Virginia Green is run through a partnership among the Virginia Department of Environmental Quality, the Virginia Tourism Corporation, the Virginia Restaurant, Lodging and Travel Association, and the Virginia Green Travel Alliance. The program seeks to reduce the environmental impacts of the tourism industry and raise environmental awareness. To support Virginia Green, look for the Virginia Green logo. You can find green-certified hotels, B&Bs, restaurants, attractions, festivals and events throughout Virginia Beach.

While the Virginia Aquarium is a fun place to visit for the whole family, the marine-science center’s primary goal is to inspire conservation through education, research and sustainable practices, and they’re always recruiting visitors of all ages to join them!

Sign up to take a behind-thescenes look at its daily operations, join its award-winning stranding response team to help rescue and learn more about our local sea life, or join in on the team’s efforts to build new oyster reefs.

The Virginia Aquarium also works to make our favorite food healthier for both our bodies and for the environment with its Sensible Seafood Program, which promotes oceanfriendly seafood. The popularity of menu items like cod, salmon, tuna and shrimp has provoked destructive seafood farming and fishing practices on a global scale. Through a series of Sensible Seafood partners, the program promotes buying locally, so as to not support these detrimental practices, in turn delivering a fresher and tastier dish to your table.

VIRGINIA AQUARIUM & MARINE SCIENCE CENTER

WATER-CONSERVATION PROGRAMS

We’re surrounded by water in Virginia Beach, which means taking care of those waterways is a huge priority in keeping our coastal city clean. Residents and businesses are encouraged to participate in initiatives that include education on efficient water use. The Chesapeake Bay Foundation plays a significant role by advocating for policies and practices that reduce pollution and improve water quality in the bay.

Similarly, the Lynnhaven River NOW program focuses on restoring and preserving the Lynnhaven River through community involvement, habitat-restoration projects and educational outreach. These combined efforts help ensure a sustainable water supply and the ecological health of the waterways in Virginia Beach.

VIRGINIA BEACH CONVENTION CENTER LEADS THE WAY IN SUSTAINABLE OPERATIONS

The Virginia Beach Convention Center (VBCC) is a leader in sustainability initiatives, committed to reducing its environmental footprint through various green practices.

The facility boasts a LEED Gold certification, achieved through energy-efficient systems, waterconservation measures and wastereduction strategies. The VBCC uses a comprehensive recycling program, energy-efficient lighting and HVAC systems, as well as water-saving fixtures throughout the building.

Additionally, the convention center supports sustainable food practices by sourcing local and organic ingredients for its catering services. These initiatives not only reduce the center’s impact on the environment, but also serve as a model for other facilities in the region, demonstrating the importance and feasibility of sustainable operations.
