On her inspiration for Proxima… “I’vealwaysbeenfascinatedbyspace.I decidedtogotoCologne,totheEuropean SpaceAgency,andmetsomeastronauts.I realisedallthepreparationforspacewas somethingthatwasalmostnevershownin films–usuallyit’sfiveminutesonEarththen theproblemshappeninspace.Icameupwith thisideaofawomanastronautwhoisalsoa mother.Thisideaoftheseparationwithher daughtermirroringherseparationwithEarth.”

On the difficulties of casting children… “Isaw 300 girls while auditioningfor the part –itwas along process. Itwas important, though. AtfirstI wantedmy owndaughter to play her inthe movie, butshe refused. She said, ‘Ifone day I wantto actinamovie, it willbe withadifferentdirector. I don’twant youas the director!’ Atfirstitwas very hard for me to findsomeone butthenwhenI met Zélie I fellinlove withher.”
On seeing her dream on the big screen… “It’s moving to see itnow, to travelwiththe movie to differentcountries. There was the release inRussiarecently, andPolandafew weeks ago. Eachtime it’s adifferent experience. EventhoughI’monEarth, travelling withthe filmI feelabitlike anastronaut.”
