Titled "All Ways Real. Always TROY.," the campaign highlights the values of discovery, exploration, persistence, leadership and mutual support that define the Trojan experience.

Developed in partnership with Carnegie Higher Education, the campaign emerged from a comprehensive brand research effort involving internal stakeholders, external perception surveys and competitive analysis. The result is a message that reflects not only what the University offers, but who Trojans are.

Troy University Chancellor Dr. Jack Hawkins, Jr., emphasized the campaign's alignment with the institution's long-standing mission.

"This campaign reflects TROY’s commitment to a college experience that is authentic, career-focused and prepares students to make a real difference in the real world," Dr. Hawkins said. "For nearly 140 years, TROY has remained steadfast in its mission to educate the mind to think, the heart to feel, and the body to act — preparing scholars, in all ways, to be leaders who contribute meaningfully to their communities and professions.

‘All Ways Real. Always TROY.’ honors our legacy while advancing TROY’s vision as a premier, purpose-driven institution on the pathway to R2 classification."

In Fall 2024, the Marketing Department hosted universitywide workshops to gather input on the TROY brand personality. Leslie Scrushy, Associate Vice Chancellor for Marketing and Communication, said the workshops were a milestone in the process.

Senior Vice Chancellor of Student Affairs, Sohail Agboatwala, highlighted the campaign's connection to student development and alumni success. "'All Ways Real. Always TROY.' speaks to the future leaders we're developing today," Agboatwala said. "The TROY experience is authentic and impactful, grounded in real relationships and meaningful opportunity. Our students graduate with critical thinking skills, strong character and leadership experience. Our alumni continue to lead with heart, staying connected, loyal and proud to call TROY home."

"All Ways Real. Always TROY." rolled out in Fall 2025 across multiple platforms, including a dynamic new commercial, print and digital advertisements, social media content, billboards and campus signage.

Scrushy said that as TROY continues to grow and reach new academic milestones, the campaign will evolve to reflect its expanding impact.

“What I love most about this campaign is its ability to spotlight the real stories of our students and alumni and that reach will only grow,” she said. “As our academic renaissance unfolds, our storytelling will expand to reflect the extent of our impact across more disciplines, more lives, and more communities. The stage will be larger and the influence even greater but the heart of who we are will remain the same, always” she said.

"All faculty, staff and students were invited, and many accepted that invitation to define what sets TROY apart," Scrushy said. "Together, we built a campaign that truly reflects who we are, and that shared ownership has led to messaging that resonates across the board."

Eric Page, Chief Client Officer at Carnegie, shared the importance of community engagement in building a successful brand.

"We pride ourselves on pulling as many voices into our process as we can, and the TROY community turned out in full force to contribute to the conversation," Page said.

"Our high-volume qualitative research model ensures we are building alignment as we are gathering data. We believe a brand should truly reflect the impact a university, its students and alumni are making in the world, and TROY has many great stories to tell."

EARLY COLLEGE ENHANCED DUAL ENROLLMENT AND NEW S C H O L A R S H I P I N I T I AT I V E

Troy University is strengthening its commitment to accessible higher education by significantly reducing dual enrollment costs and introducing the Cardinal and Black Award Scholarship for participating students. Thanks to generous internal scholarship support, Troy University Early College is pleased to offer a $33/credit net cost for all Early College coursework taken. Each three-credit hour course carries a net cost of only $99.

SIGNIFICANT COST REDUCTION FOR DUAL ENROLLMENT The dramatic price reduction applies to all students who qualify for in-state tuition, including all Alabama residents and students from qualifying counties in Florida and Georgia. This substantial decrease makes college-level coursework more accessible to high school students across the region.

The University's Early College Dual Enrollment program allows high school students to earn both high school and college credit simultaneously through a wide range of courses that satisfy general education requirements and transfer to other institutions. Students can complete coursework online or on campus, providing flexible learning options.

"Troy University is enhancing access to higher education for high school students by offering affordable collegelevel courses," said Sohail Agboatwala, Senior Vice Chancellor of Student Affairs. "This initiative gives students a valuable head start on their academic journey, allowing them to save time and money as they work toward their degrees."

Dr. KeLeigh Pritchett, Director of Dual Enrollment, said, "The affordability of our dual enrollment program provides quality educational opportunities to students who might not have the financial ability to take college-level courses otherwise. Troy University prioritizes student success and strives to collaborate with outside partners to provide quality and engaging real-world learning experiences."

CARDINAL AND BLACK AWARD SCHOLARSHIP Troy University will also offer the Cardinal and Black Award, a renewable scholarship specifically designed for dual enrollment program graduates. The scholarship provides $1,000 to $2,000 annually, bases in complete credit hours, and is renewable for up to three years.

Through the TROY Partnership Program, the University now offers a 10% tuition scholarship and a waiver of application fees for all veterans and their families including spouses and dependents in appreciation for their service to the country.

“At Troy University, we know that freedom isn’t free,” said Dr. Jack Hawkins, Jr., Chancellor. “Serving the men and women of the U.S. military is a part of our mission at TROY, and we are pleased to demonstrate our appreciation for their service by offering this new scholarship and application fee waiver to veterans and their families.”

Scot Brumbeloe, Director of Military and Veterans Affairs, said the scholarship will help military veterans and their families meet their educational goals.

“In addition to being a longstanding partner to those serving in our military, we are proud to now offer a tuition scholarship to all veterans and their families to show appreciation for their service to our great nation,” Brumbeloe said. “This scholarship and application fee waiver will assist in making TROY more accessible than ever and assist military veterans and their families in attaining their higher education goals.”

More than 3,000 students have graduated from the global partnership.

CELEBRATING 25 YEARS T R O Y ’ S 1 + 2 + 1 P R O G R A M S E T S G L O B A L S TA N D A R D I N H I G H E R E D U C AT I O N When 44 Chinese students stepped onto Troy University’s campus in August 2001, they carried with them the beginnings of something far larger than a degree. Their arrival marked the start of the Sino-American 1+2+1 Dual Degree Program, a partnership that has since transformed not only individual lives, but also the global profile of TROY. Launched through a partnership with the China Center for International Educational Exchange, Troy University was the first U.S. institution to welcome students into what became the 1+2+1 model. The program allows students from partner Chinese universities to complete their first year of study in China, spend two years at an American institution and return home to finish their final year.

Graduates receive degrees from both universities.

“The establishment of the Sino-American Dual Degree Program was born of need and created at the request of the government in Beijing,” said Dr. Jack Hawkins, Jr.,

Chancellor. “We were honored to be the first American university to participate in the collaborative effort. The innovation of the program reflects TROY's position as ‘Alabama's International University.’”

The program’s success at TROY quickly drew national attention. In 2004, the American Association of State Colleges and Universities adopted the TROY-led model and expanded it to dozens of campuses nationwide.

Today, nearly 130 Chinese universities and 39 American universities participate, with more than 3,000 students having taken part.

In 2016, the program shifted to specialized International Cohort Programs (ICPs) rather than recruiting individuals across disciplines. Cohorts have included financial economics, graphic design, business, environmental science and psychology. Recent agreements with Nanyang Normal University and Lanzhou University of Finance and Economics added computer science and accounting.

Each summer, graduates gather in cities across China for the official 1+2+1 commencement ceremony. This year’s 25th anniversary event in Beijing marked the program’s 22nd graduation and brought multiple honors for Troy University, including the Outstanding Contribution Award and a Special Honorary Award.

Faculty leaders were also recognized for their roles in shaping the program’s success. Dr. Hawkins received a Special Honorary Award, Deal was honored with an Excellence Award, and Xiaojuan (Silvia) Li, Director of China Operations, earned an Outstanding Contribution Award.

“This program has been truly transformational for TROY,” said Sohail Agboatwala, Senior Vice Chancellor of Student Affairs. “The connections made through this program on both sides, students and administrators, have served us well and allowed the region to gain a better understanding of the benefits of people-to-people relationships.”

The impact extends far beyond academics. Students immerse themselves in American culture and language, forging lifelong connections.

“The awards are well-deserved recognitions for TROY, and I’m honored to play a part of such a dynamic program,” Li said. “Thanks to the dedicated efforts of our team and the International Programs office, who work tirelessly on the China trips and service to our students. We are confident in our ability to overcome any future challenges. I am grateful for the support from each academic department and look forward to developing more ICPs in other areas to further support student recruitment and retention on the Troy Campus.”

From its beginnings with 44 students in 2001 to its role today as the model for an international program of distinction, Troy University’s leadership in the 1+2+1 program underscores its commitment to bringing the world to Troy — and taking TROY to the world.

One example is Xixi Xiao, a 2017 graduate from Guangxi, China, who now works internationally as a freelance artist.

“I was lucky to have met amazing staff at TROY who encouraged me during my undergraduate study,” she said. “The International Student Cultural Organization helped build a foundation for my career as a global artist.

ISCO opened the possibility for me to meet people from all over the world, and from this experience, I learned to celebrate differences and cultivated communication skills within a multicultural context.”

For faculty, the program offers the rare chance to see students grow across multiple stages of their academic journeys. Austin Deal, Assistant Director of China Operations, teaches English to freshmen in China before supporting them at TROY. “Working with Chinese students and faculty has truly been one of the most rewarding aspects of my career,” he said. “Seeing them walk across the stage during their graduation ceremony back in China is incredibly fulfilling. It’s a powerful moment, knowing I played a part in their academic journey and personal development.”

JONES HALL A T R A N S F O R M AT I V E H U B F O R H E A LT H S C I E N C E S AT TROY UNIVERSITY Troy University has ushered in a new era of healthcare education with the grand opening of Jones Hall, a cuttingedge facility dedicated to advancing the College of Health Sciences.

Named in honor of alumnus Billy Jones, this state-of-theart building is a testament to the University’s commitment to preparing future healthcare professionals through immersive, hands-on learning experiences.

Jones Hall now serves as the academic home for the School of Nursing, the School of Social Work and Human Services and the School of Allied Health.

“Jones Hall isn’t just a building — it’s a vision brought to life,” said Dr. LaGary Carter, Dean of the College of Health Sciences. “It reflects our mission to train the next generation of healthcare leaders with the most innovative tools and immersive experiences available in health education today.”

Designed with student success in mind, the facility features a 130-seat lecture hall, a 30-bed hospital simulation lab and five advanced simulation rooms that replicate real-world medical scenarios. These resources allow students to develop critical thinking and clinical skills in a safe, controlled environment.

For those studying physical education and exercise science, Jones Hall offers a movement lab for biomechanical analysis and an exercise science lab named in honor of John “Doc” Anderson. These labs support fitness assessment, rehabilitation and research in exercise physiology. A dedicated wet lab further enhances kinesiology and human movement sciences research capabilities.

Thanks to a $2 million gift from Jones, President of Crowne Management, LLC, this transformative

space expands academic programs and enriches student learning.

Troy University Chancellor Dr. Jack Hawkins, Jr. expressed gratitude for Jones’ gift.

“This generous gift will have a transformative impact on our programming and how we serve and equip health sciences students for their vital roles within the workforce,” Dr. Hawkins said. “We often say that the most important thing we do at Troy University is serve students.

Mr. Jones’ generous gift is evidence of the culture of caring that exists at TROY, not only among our faculty and staff, but also among our alumni. This will impact Troy University students for generations to come.”

Jones’ company, Crowne Management, LLC, operates 17 nursing homes across Alabama, along with assisted living, therapy, home healthcare and hospice services, making his contribution deeply rooted in a lifelong commitment to healthcare.

“This is probably one of the biggest honors of my life,” Jones remarked, reflecting on the building that now bears his name.

Jones Hall is more than a building — it’s a symbol of progress, innovation and the enduring spirit of giving.

With its advanced facilities and the support of dedicated alumni, Troy University is poised to shape the future of healthcare education for generations to come.

SORRELL AI CENTER A S T R AT E G I C L A U N C H AT THE INTERSECTION OF TECH AND BUSINESS Troy University is taking a business-first approach to artificial intelligence with the opening of the Sorrell College of Business Center for Artificial Intelligence Research and Education.

The AI Center, located on the Montgomery Campus, seeks to equip business professionals, executives and organizations with the knowledge to evaluate AI opportunities, implement machine learning models and manage AI-driven transformation.

Research-based programs — including academic programs — will be available to Alabama business, industry and government organizations, enabling them to meet the growing demand for AI expertise in executive leadership, workforce development and organizational management.

“AI is no longer just a tool for data scientists. Business leaders must understand how to leverage AI strategically, manage risk and ensure ethical deployment,” said Dr. Judson Edwards, Dean of the Sorrell College of Business. “The AI Center provides that foundational support for business, industry, military and educational

needs, and brings together experts who are committed to educating not only our students but the greater community in this emerging field.”

By focusing on leadership and AI management, the AI Center provides students with hands-on experience in AI applications, case studies from real-world business challenges and insights into the regulatory and ethical considerations of AI deployment.

“Our programs empower professionals to navigate AI’s complexities and maximize its value,” said AI Center Executive Director, Dr. Jim Locke. “The launch of the AI Center also aligns with Alabama’s growing reputation as a hub for technology and innovation. Montgomery’s strategic location, combined with Troy University’s strong business programs, makes it an ideal setting for AI research and workforce development.”

The AI Center will foster collaborations with regional businesses, government agencies and industry partners to ensure AI adoption drives economic growth and operational excellence.

“TROY’s leadership in forming the Center for AI will have a positive impact on the state of Alabama and beyond,” said Mike Shaw, State Legislator and member of the Governor’s GenAI Task Force. “It’s great to see TROY and the Sorrell College of Business so ahead of the curve with artificial intelligence. It shows their research and education efforts are in absolute sync with the changing needs of our people and workforce.”

Shaw’s sentiments were echoed by Amanda Senn, Director of the Alabama Securities Commission.

“We are building relationships with small businesses, entrepreneurs, investors and financial professionals and offering strategic guidance on the evolving policy landscape,” she said. “TROY’s initiative is closely aligned with our work, and we look forward to partnering with the University to position Alabama as a leader in AI education and innovation.”

Certificate programs, consulting services and master’slevel educational programs in AI, such as an AI-focused Master of Business Administration degree, are already available. Furthermore, the AI Center has teamed with the University-wide AI Forward Committee to implement new technology for educational implementation.

A CULTURAL MILESTONE COLLEGE OF ARTS AND HUMANITIES AWARDED LANDMARK GRANT FROM T H E M E L L O N F O U N D AT I O N

The project “(Re)Reading Alabama’s Cultural Archives: Connecting Place to its Multitudes,” was written by Dr. Priya Menon, Principal Investigator, Project Lead and Director of UHGSP, with support from Dr. Michael Thrasher, Dean of the College of Arts and Humanities, and Dr. Kirk Curnutt, Chair of the Department of English.

The three-year interdisciplinary exploration of Alabama’s cultural history and legacy will be archived and publicly accessible in a digital collection hosted by the Troy University Library and the Alabama Department of Archives and History.

“This funding will allow TROY to explore Alabama’s rich and diverse cultural identity while providing opportunities for scholarship and public dialogue,” said Chancellor Dr. Jack Hawkins, Jr., “I would like to congratulate the outstanding faculty members who secured this grant.

Their dedication, vision and collaborative spirit exemplify the very best of Troy University.”

As part of the grant initiative, a roundtable discussion was held in the spring of 2025 and featured Dr. P. Toby Graham, University Librarian and Associate Provost at the University of Georgia; Kevin King, Founder and Executive Director of The King’s Canvas in Montgomery, Alabama; and Quinton Cockrell, a professor in the Department of Theatre and Dance at TROY. Curnutt served as the moderator for the conversation which explored how art, archives, performance and community storytelling can help build resilient, inclusive public spaces rooted in cultural memory and local identity.

In addition, a call for Mellon Fellows was sent out at the end of Summer 2025. The fellows will contribute to public humanities projects and receive mentorship, collaborative opportunities and stipends to support research or creative work that advances community engagement, cultural preservation and storytelling in the region. A series of courses emphasizing community engagement, regional storytelling and interdisciplinary approaches will launch in Year 3 of the project.

Troy University’s College of Arts and Humanities has been awarded a $449,000 grant from the Mellon Foundation to enhance the understanding of Alabama’s cultural identity through research, curriculum development and community engagement.

The grant, which was awarded in the spring of 2025, is the largest in CAH’s history. Through the University Honors Global Scholars Program, it will support a project to engage students, faculty and the local community in place-based inquiries.

“I am excited about what this initiative will make possible for our students, faculty collaborators and community partners,” said Menon. “This work has the potential to spark new conversations, foster creative collaborations and build a shared archive that honors the stories and knowledge rooted in our region. I look forward to seeing how these efforts grow over time and leave a lasting impact well beyond the life of the grant.”

Community partners include the Troy Arts Council, Johnson Center for the Arts, Birmingham Museum of Art, the Pioneer Museum and the Brundidge Historical Society.

HONORING DON JEFFREY CHAMPION OF SUPPORT AND ENCOURAGEMENT Former Troy University administrator Dr. Don Jeffrey, who passed away on Jan. 28 at age 78, was remembered as an icon of the University by Dr. Jack Hawkins, Jr., Chancellor.

The legacy of Jeffrey, who retired from the University in 2023 after 46 years of service, was honored during a Celebration of Life service on the Troy Campus on Feb. 15.

“Dr. Don Jeffrey is and shall remain an icon at Troy University,” Dr. Hawkins said. “Throughout my tenure at TROY, I can remember no one who had a greater effect on the institution or on me personally. His pioneering spirit led to the establishment of many firsts — the first bachelor’s degree in sport management, the first master's degree in sport management and the first Ph.D. in sport management — all firsts within the state of Alabama.”

At TROY, Jeffrey served as a faculty member, Director of Aquatics, Chair of the Department of Kinesiology and Health Promotion and Dean of the College of Health and Human Services. He also served in interim roles as Dean of the College of Education, the College of Arts and Sciences and the College of Communication and Fine Arts. Jeffrey twice served as Vice Chancellor of the Dothan Campus.

In addition to his academic career, he served honorably in the United States Army for 22 years.

“The Dothan Campus and the Wiregrass community deeply feel the absence of Jeffrey’s passion and unwavering dedication to higher education,” said Dr. Kirk Davis, Chief Operating Officer of the Dothan Campus.

Dr. Lance Tatum, former Senior Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs at TROY and now President of Northwest Missouri State University, said Jeffrey’s biggest impact was the way he supported and encouraged others.

“I never would have considered pursuing my Ph.D. at Florida State had it not been for Don Jeffrey. He saw something in me that others might not have,” Tatum said.

“To me, Don’s greatest gifts were his loyalty to those he

cared about and his belief that you could do or achieve anything. He wanted to see people succeed and did everything in his power to help them do so. That to me, was Don Jeffrey.”

Troy University's Chemistry and Physics faculty have secured a competitive $394,429 National Science Foundation (NSF) grant that will aid in the development of visual learning apps for STEM students at higher-learning institutions nationwide.

Dr. Raj Vinnakota, Interim Director of the Center for Materials and Manufacturing Sciences, and Dr. Shaimum Shahriar, Assistant Professor of chemistry and physics, were awarded the Improving Undergraduate STEM Education grant to develop easy-to-use, interactive simulation apps for teaching optoelectronics. This initiative aims to transform how complex concepts in optoelectronics and semiconductor physics are taught in higher education.

enabling remote access and fostering collaboration with institutions nationwide.”

In addition to serving as a teaching tool, the professors want the app to serve in a research capacity as well.

Once it is established and functional, the plan is to have students in capstone courses use the simulations to design and test new devices.

“This initiative is not just about enhancing classroom learning,” Shahriar said. “It’s about creating a versatile tool that advances research, supports experimentation and fosters innovation. By integrating education and research, this project will have a lasting impact on the STEM community.”

Vinnakota and Shahriar are collaborating with Grambling State University and Utah Tech, along with other TROY physics faculty, in developing and testing the simulations and user interface before launch.

“This NSF grant is a significant achievement, awarded to institutions offering STEM-related undergraduate programs across the country,” said Zhiyong Wang, Chair of the Department of Chemistry and Physics.

“The ingenuity and dedication of Vinnakota and Shahriar have brought national recognition to Troy University. This project aligns with the University’s vision of becoming an R2 research institution while making critical contributions to STEM education and research.”

The grant allows Vinnakota and Shahriar to create a series of apps that will give students the ability to visualize concepts and provide hands-on learning opportunities.

“Traditional teaching methods often fall short in conveying these complex processes,” Vinnakota said. “In today’s digital era, we have access to advanced computational tools — why not harness them to enhance learning?”

The objective of the grant is to create simulations that will act as a bridge between the class environment and the experimental, Shahriar said. With this tool, students will be able to improve conceptual learning by providing a visual, hands-on approach to studying light interactions with electronic and thermal systems.

“Students not only grasp theoretical concepts but also engage in realistic, hands-on exploration of lightsemiconductor interactions,” he said. “This approach fosters experiential learning and prepares students for future research and industry roles.”

The end goal for the project is to develop nearly 50 simulation models, then convert those models into apps.

Once the apps are launched, they can be accessed by students from any university.

“Many institutions don’t have the resources to create or support extensive lab facilities,” Shahriar said. “These simulation apps provide an accessible alternative,

A NEW ERA FOR STEM AND ENGINEERING This year, the University launched a Bachelor of Science in Electrical and Electronics Engineering, featuring a cuttingedge curriculum that integrates theory, hands-on learning and industry-driven innovation.

“As industries increasingly rely on advancements in semiconductors, telecommunications, automation and renewable energy, this program will equip students with the expertise needed to meet workforce demands,” said Dr. Raj Vinnakota, Program Coordinator.

The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics projects employment in STEM fields to grow by 10.4% in the next decade, more than twice the rate of non-STEM employment. These numbers drive TROY’s increased focus on STEM, both through the BSEEE and plans for future programs.

“This flagship program has already garnered significant interest from students seeking a high-quality, affordable pathway into the engineering profession,” said Dr. Govind Menon, Dean of the newly named College of Science and Engineering. “Building on this momentum, the University is actively exploring the feasibility of introducing additional programs in computer engineering, materials engineering and biomedical engineering — each designed to meet the evolving demands of the modern workforce and to further enrich TROY’s growing portfolio of STEM disciplines.”

R E O R G A N I Z I N G F O R S T R AT E G I C F O C U S This initiative has accompanied a widespread reorganization of TROY’s academic colleges, starting with the creation of the College of Science and Engineering.

The College of Science and Engineering now houses STEM-related fields that once comprised the College of Arts and Sciences, including biological and environmental sciences, chemistry and physics, computer science, geospatial informatics, mathematics and statistics and pre-professional programs.

“We recognized that our new engineering program represented a significant investment and commitment to STEM education that would not be adequately showcased within the previous organizational structure,” said Dr. Kerry Palmer, Senior Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs. “Under the old system, an engineering program would be housed within our College of Arts and Sciences alongside numerous other disciplines. While this traditional model served us well for many years, we realized it diluted the visibility and impact of a highprofile, high-impact program like engineering.”

These changes also allow faculty in STEM disciplines to collaborate more directly, share resources more efficiently and develop programs that reflect the integrated nature of modern scientific and engineering work.

HUMANITIES AND SOCIAL SCIENCES S T I L L V I TA L Non-STEM programs that were once housed in the College of Arts and Sciences have been moved to other colleges, which have also been renamed to reflect their expanded missions.

The College of Education is now the College of Education and Behavioral Sciences and has gained the Department of Anthropology, Sociology and Criminology, the Department of Political Science and the Army and Air Force ROTC programs.

“I am excited about increased opportunities for crossdiscipline collaboration and more efficient use of resources,” College of Education and Behavioral Sciences Dean Dr. Fred Figliano said. “There are many ways we can work together.”

The Department of History and Philosophy now belongs to the College of Arts and Humanities, the new name for the College of Communication and Fine Arts.

While STEM fields are being expanded, non-STEM fields such as the humanities remain key to TROY’s success and ongoing mission to educate students.

“In many ways, we see our College as central to the mission, vision and purpose of Troy University,” said Dr. William Thrasher, Dean of the College of Arts and Humanities. “Practically every undergraduate student on campus interacts with our college — whether through core course offerings in disciplines like English or history, or highly impactful programs like music, art, theatre or dance.”

This fall, the college became the first in the state of Alabama to offer a Master of Arts in Arts Administration degree.

“This degree represents an exciting opportunity for students to develop the leadership skills and practical expertise needed to guide nonprofit and cultural organizations into the future,” Thrasher said.

In addition to the MBA in Analytics, the Sorrell College of Business is offering a concentration in artificial intelligence for both its MBA and MSM programs.

RISING AS A RESEARCH UNIVERSITY These new programs are part of the formula that will take TROY, which was recently designated as a Carnegie Research University, into even more elite company. Administrators hope to achieve R2 status, signifying a high level of research activity and doctorate production, in the future.

To achieve R2 status, an institution must spend at least $5 million per year on research and development and award a minimum of 20 research doctorates each year.

During the 2023-24 academic year, faculty and staff secured more than $42 million in grants, an institutional record, and TROY was reclassified as a doctoral institution by the Alabama Commission on Higher Education.

“Our pursuit for R2 status means Troy University becomes a magnet for innovation,” Dr. Hawkins said. “By attracting the best and brightest faculty, staff and students, we open doors to develop strong partnerships with our communities. As Dr. A. G. Gaston said, ‘find a need and fill it.’ R2 status gives Troy University the platform to identify and fill needs on a grander scale than we’ve ever had.”

One recent example of the increased emphasis on research came in late 2024, when the prestigious Mellon Foundation awarded the College of Arts and Humanities a $449,000 grant.

Faculty members in each college are key to enhancing the University’s contributions to research and innovation, fueling the pursuit of R2 status.

S TAT E - O F - T H E - A R T F A C I L I T I E S FUEL STUDENT SUCCESS The emergence as a research-focused institution is seen throughout each college, demonstrated in the recent construction of new facilities such as the Center for Materials and Manufacturing Sciences (CMMS) and Jones Hall, which is the new home for the College of Health Sciences.

“Jones Hall epitomizes the necessity of evidence-based experiential instruction and training for students,” said CHS Dean Dr. LaGary Carter. “It also supports the required faculty research and grant funding benchmarks to achieve R2 status as an institution. The laboratories for the School of Nursing and the School of Allied Health provide students opportunities to utilize state-of-the-art equipment to enhance faculty and student research, teaching efficacy, student learning and future success in the workforce.”

In addition to its academic programs, the College of Science and Engineering houses three dynamic and emerging research centers: the CMMS, the Center for Relativity and Cosmology and the Center for Biomedical Sciences.

“Together, these centers embody the University’s dedication to advancing knowledge, fostering interdisciplinary collaboration and preparing students to lead in a rapidly evolving scientific and technological landscape,” Menon said. “The Center for Materials and Manufacturing Sciences, for instance, will serve as a hub for cutting-edge research in advanced materials, sustainable manufacturing, and industrial innovation, with a particular emphasis on polymers, biological and electronic materials.”

While the facilities represent major financial investments, they reflect an even deeper investment in students.

“Troy University is investing in excellence, and excellence demands the best facilities,” Dr. Hawkins said. “We believe in our students’ potential. Facilities like Jones Hall and the CMMS reflect an investment in our students while providing opportunities for strong workforce development and original research. We give our students world-class facilities because we believe they can deliver world-class results.”

Opened in 2024 as the first building in TROY history solely dedicated to research, the CMMS provides students with hands-on opportunities alongside some of the top scientists in their field.

The National Institute of Standards and Technology has awarded almost $10 million in grants to CMMS for lab equipment, research projects, stipends and faculty.

“We will measure the success of this academic transformation through two key metrics: enrollment numbers and employment outcomes,” Palmer said. “Our goal is to see strong enrollment in our new programs, particularly in the College of Science and Engineering, and to track how effectively our graduates are securing employment in their fields. These metrics directly reflect whether we're delivering on our promise to both students and the workforce — graduating qualified professionals who can immediately contribute to their industries.”

Turner, who is now considering a future in anesthesiology, is confident in her path.

“Having access to academic research and hands-on experience at TROY has truly transformed my college experience,” she said. “It’s one thing to learn about scientific concepts in the classroom, but being able to apply them in a lab setting, on projects that could have real-world impact, is incredibly empowering. These opportunities have helped me build confidence, develop practical skills and get a clearer sense of my career goals.

I feel like I’m not just preparing for my future, I’m actively shaping it.”

UNIVERSITY HONORS GLOBAL SCHOLARS PROGRAM INTRODUCED Troy University’s academic evolution this year also includes the launch of a new honors program that provides an elite academic experience for high-achieving students.

Unveiled in the spring of 2025, the University Honors Global Scholars Program (UHGSP) is an elite honors program that fosters academic excellence, global engagement and leadership among its top scholars.

Dr. Priya Menon's, Director of TROY's University Honors Global Scholars Program, goal is to elevate academic excellence.

“We want to help our students compete for merit awards, get their papers published in academic journals, get internships and collaborations abroad,” she said. “We have the students, and now we get to offer them the best we have in a new and exciting way. We want to make sure their relationship with TROY doesn’t end when they graduate.”

The UHGSP develops students through leadership training, community engagement, international study, mentorship and advanced coursework to prepare them for graduate studies and careers.

Benefits include small classes, graduation distinctions, early registration, networking opportunities and publication showcases.

Admission is by invitation only, typically at the time of acceptance to TROY. It requires an application containing a personal statement, resume, academic recommendation letter and an interview for shortlisted candidates. Students can enter the UHGSP through one of five ways: Scholar Plus Award recipient, Scholar Award recipient, Chancellor’s Award recipient, nomination or transfer admission.

To complete the program, students must maintain a 3.5 GPA, complete a study abroad research project with a presentation and finish an Honors CORE capstone or thesis.

CULTIVATING CONSERVATION TROY STUDENT HELPS GROW RARE CARNIVOROUS PLANTS Fisher Parrish of Dothan, Alabama, is working with the United States Forest Service to help grow a rare, endangered species of pitcher plants only found in four Southeastern locations. He’s also part of a team tracking the turtles at Mullis Pond at the Troy University Arboretum.

Parrish received a $750 Alabama Audubon Walter F. Coxe Research Grant and a $1,600 Alabama Wildflower Society Scholarship for his work with the Gulf Coast red-flowered pitcher plant, a carnivorous plant only found in three counties in the Florida Panhandle and in the Conecuh National Forest in Covington County, Alabama.

He has grown about 200 seeds in the Arboretum’s greenhouse. Once the plants and planting sites are ready, they’ll be transplanted to the Conecuh National Forest to re-establish the population. There are also plans in the works for safeguarding the plant’s continued survival in case of a disaster.

“We want to re-establish and augment the population out there as well as survey the area for other populations

that might be around,” Parrish said. “We also want to get in contact with organizations like the Atlanta Botanical Gardens and Davis Arboretum at Auburn University to establish populations that could be a safeguard population in case the populations in the wild get destroyed.”

Parrish graduated in the spring and is pursuing his master’s degree in TROY’s Biological and Environmental Sciences Department and making this project the cornerstone of his research.

Last year, he also began work on a survey of turtles at Mullis Pond. The group has set two traps to aid them in getting a population analysis to see which species are present, how many, which ones are staying and how the population is impacted by nearby construction.

“There’s a lot of runoff and pollution around Mullis Pond and the creeks from all the new houses and things going up, and that’s changed a lot of the waterways,” Parrish said. “We want to keep tabs on everybody in and out of the pond. We take pictures of them to see how their shells are, how their health is, we measure their weight and try to keep tabs on nests around the pond. All of that helps us track how the environmental changes and pollution affect the reptiles and amphibians in our local ecosystems.”

Parrish’s dedication to his research and conservation work has not only provided him with valuable experience, but also helped him build important connections.

“The biggest thing I feel like I’ve gotten from being able to participate in these research projects is being able to talk to different people in different organizations and government agencies, along with the experience,” he said. “Experience is big, especially in the field of science. I dove in headfirst and realized the only way you’re going to get experience is getting out there and getting involved, so I have tried to set myself up for success all while doing what I love, so it’s been a win-win.”

concept. “Part of being a leader is being a servant. Many people think leadership is only about being in charge, but being a servant-leader means walking alongside others and helping them,” she explained.

Students heard from Medal of Honor recipient Mike Rose and Alabama leaders, including Col. Alan Miller, Judge Lara Alvis, Scotty Kirkland and Rep. Kenneth Paschal.

Eighty-six rising high school juniors and seniors from across Alabama gathered at Troy University June 8-13 for the second annual Trojan Patriot Academy, a leadership program designed to forge civic strength through the lens of history.

The week began with team-building activities at Butter and Egg Adventures, leadership assessments and MyersBriggs personality testing. Dr. Duane Gunn, Director of Operations at TROY’s Leadership Institute, explained that every component was strategically designed to develop civic-minded leaders.

“Everything from the bonding experience at Butter and Egg Adventures through all the classes and reenactments at American Village — all are designed to build them as leaders and to foster civic-minded leadership,” Gunn said.

HISTORICAL IMMERSION AND LEADERSHIP DEVELOPMENT Students visited the Alabama State House in Montgomery, met with Gov. Kay Ivey and State Superintendent Dr. Eric Mackey toured the Rosa Parks Museum before moving to the American Village for a living history presentation on the Bill of Rights and the founding era.

Brooklyn Jones from Pike County High School called it “a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity that really opens your mind and deepens your knowledge of history. We study history in class, but coming here has shown me visually the things we learn about.”

“Seeing them come together in just one week, from not knowing anybody to delivering presentations demonstrating leadership has been phenomenal.”

Scott expressed ambitious plans to expand the event in the future. “Next year I want to see us increase participation by about 30 percent. We don’t simply run programs — we create experiences. Every experience should forge civic strength through the lens of history.”

“The Trojan Patriot Academy is an extraordinary opportunity for young people to examine the leadership traits that carried our founders through the strain of independence and the birth of a new nation," said Col. Alan Miller, CEO of American Village. "By reflecting on the courage, sacrifice and principled leadership of those who came before us, students are encouraged to chart their own journeys of service and responsibility, equipped to lead with integrity in their schools, communities and country.”

“Leadership is shaped through training and experiences like this,” Dr. Hawkins said. “I can’t begin to explain how excited I am to know that the next generation of this country’s leaders is being trained right here in this room.”

The event concluded with closing remarks from both Dr. Hawkins and Col. Miller.

On March 20, 35 brothers from Troy University’s Alpha Tau Omega (ATO) Fraternity completed their 128.3-mile trek for wounded veterans by sprinting into the waves at Panama City Beach, Florida, celebrating a record-breaking $140,000 raised for their cause.

The fraternity’s annual spring break philanthropy event, Walk Hard, was founded in 2009 by four ATO brothers to raise funds for Jeep Sullivan’s Wounded Warrior Outdoor Adventures.

Beginning the Friday before spring break, the group departs from TROY’s Quad and embarks on the journey to Pier Park in Panama City Beach. Along the way, they stop nightly to hear inspirational messages and words of encouragement from veterans.

Of the 35 walkers, 14 were first-time participants, 19 were returning for their second or third journey and two had completed the Walk all four years.

Logan Cairnes, a business major from Birmingham, Alabama, was one of the four-year walkers. He said he’s grateful to have been part of the legacy ATO is building.

“This last year has meant a lot to me, but all four years have meant a lot. There’s a lot of excitement and adrenaline,” he said. “This is the most money we’ve ever raised in the chapter’s history, and it’s a great feeling to do that here with all of my brothers. This is a great organization, and I truly believe in what they do. I hope it continues to grow. Thank you to everyone for the support.”

Jacob Stephens, a political science major from Douglasville, Georgia, was one of the 14 brothers walking for the first time.

“Coming into this, I wasn’t 100% sure what my purpose was, but hearing the veterans talk every night really showed me that this is for the veterans. This does good for them and they deserve it,” he said. “It was harder than I expected because so many guys do it, finish it and come back again the next year — but I definitely had some eyeopening moments.”

Stephens said his favorite day of the walk was Day 4, but the ending was “pure joy.”

“Days 2 and 3 were pretty rough, so I did not have high hopes for Day 4, but it was a great day of just hanging out and getting through it,” he said. “Now that I’m here on the beach, I’m just feeling pure joy — being here with my brothers, my family, my friends and getting to share this with them is incredible.”

Since its inception, Walk Hard has raised nearly $800,000.

FAISON NAMED BANK AREA PRESIDENT LEADING SMARTBANK IN CENTRAL AND EAST ALABAMA Sorrell College of Business alumnus Stacy Faison ('99,'02) was recently named SmartBank's Area President for its operations in central and east Alabama.

Faison, who holds both a BBA in accounting and an MBA in business management from TROY, is a Distinguished National Alumni of the Year, selected in 2007. His 27-year banking career has been spent in commercial and private banking leadership roles at Columbus Bank and Trust, now Synovus, Troy Bank & Trust and Bank of America.

Faison has a passion for giving back to the community, which he intends to continue in his new role. For more than 15 years, he has served on the Sorrell College of Business Executive Advisory Council at Troy University. His past involvement as Chairman for Piedmont Columbus Regional Healthcare Foundation and as a Board Member for Alabama Trust Fund, Auburn Chamber of Commerce and Troy University Athletic Hall of Fame are just a few examples of his passion for the community.

Le, who was among the TROY graduates of the largestever graduating class at the University of Economics and Business (UEB) at Vietnam National University (VNU), spoke to her classmates during commencement exercises in Hanoi in November.

“I started this journey at 34, married, raising kids and decided to take a step that felt both exciting and daunting,” she said. “There were times, especially early on, when I asked myself, ‘Is this really the right choice?’

I remember the first days, wondering how I would fit in among a group of younger people who were, in many ways, so different than me,” she said.

She finished her business administration degree with the highest grade-point average of any student in the 96-member graduating class.

TROY Chancellor Dr. Jack Hawkins, Jr., Senior Vice Chancellor Sohail Agboatwala, along with leaders from UEB and VNU, participated in the ceremony to present diplomas.

“I became a part of this vibrant and dynamic group — almost without realizing it. Together, we’ve shared countless late nights discussing homework, tackling group projects and working against many tight deadlines,” she said. “Throughout all the classes, I found connections, friendships and developed a deep sense of belonging. I treasure the bond we’ve created.”

Le’s story is similar to that of others who have found TROY supportive and flexible enough to meet the demands of adult students.

“Today, I can proudly say that this journey has been one of the best choices I’ve ever made. I leave this program with so much more knowledge; I leave with lasting friendships and a sense of confidence I have never had before,” she said. “I’ve learned to embrace challenges, to trust in my abilities and to appreciate the power of determination.

“My children grew up watching me study late into the night, and I hope they have learned as much from my persistence as I have learned from this journey,” she said.

Godsave continues to impact the medical community with this new certification, reinforcing Troy University’s legacy of producing outstanding healthcare professionals. His achievement inspires current and future nursing students and demonstrates the power of dedication, continuous education and a passion for patient care.

The Alabama Board of Nursing granted Godsave this prestigious approval, marking a significant milestone in the field of wound care and hyperbaric medicine.

With this certification, Godsave joins an elite group of professionals at Troy Regional Medical Center, including Medical Director Dr. Richard Schloemer, Dr. Richard Boone and Dr. Paul Dulaney, in providing specialized supervision for hyperbaric oxygen therapy.

“We are thrilled that Shannon has achieved this certification, allowing us to expand our services and better serve our patients,” said Troy Regional CEO Rick Smith.

Godsave’s journey in nursing is deeply rooted in Troy University. He graduated magna cum laude with an associate degree in nursing from Lurleen B. Wallace Community College and a bachelor’s degree in nursing from Troy University. He continued his education at TROY, earning a master’s degree in nursing.

The PAEMST recognizes educators who demonstrate exceptional teaching practices and develop highquality instructional programs in mathematics and science. Swasey was selected for this honor based on his innovative teaching approach and dedication to student success.

PRESERVING HISTORY THEO MOORE II RECEIVES HISTORIC P R E S E R V AT I O N A W A R D Troy University alumnus, Theo Moore II ('12,'16), was awarded the Alabama Historical Association’s 2025 Jeff Jakeman Digital History Award for his contribution to historical preservation and promotion through his nonprofit organization, Hiztorical Vision Productions.

Hiztorical Vision Productions was founded in 2017 in Auburn, Alabama, with the goal of preserving local history and educating the public through historical documentaries. With a focus on African American history that is “not always easily accessible or taught to the general public,” Moore strives to teach history from a different perspective.

“The films and projects we usually see of African Americans are from the victimization standpoint, rather than a focus on the success stories of those who were civically engaged or made contributions to this country,” he said. “We understand that we play a role in preservation for the next generation — telling history and giving a voice to people that would probably never be heard.”

Moore developed an interest in history at a young age and carried that curiosity throughout his schooling years.

That curiosity was encouraged first by a veteran history teacher and then by the faculty at TROY. “The history department was amazing. They specialize in different topics as it pertains to history, so it’s a very

well-rounded staff,” he said. “The department was very open to my perspective, but coming from a different background and seeing history through a totally different lens gave me a good challenge as well. I definitely learned the craft of being unbiased. I had to take myself out of the equation and actually write from various perspectives.”

Moore graduated from TROY in 2012 with a bachelor’s degree in history and in 2016 with a master’s degree in post-secondary education in history. In 2023, he returned to campus for the McPherson-Mitchell Lecture in Southern History for a screening and discussion of his documentary “Afrikan by Way of American.”

Originally wanting to work in a classroom, Moore said he decided to pursue filmmaking to make information free and accessible and to reach a larger audience. “I was always the type of person who wanted other people to know about these things,” he said. “I really do feel grateful and honored that I’m respected amongst my peers in the history field.”

But what means the most to him, he said, is seeing the impact on the people in the communities he features.

“We have screenings for the community and the community comes out in their best dress … and we do a red carpet and they’re smiling ear to ear,” he said, “and some are crying happy tears of finally feeling heard, finally feeling like their story means something.”

In addition to filmmaking, Moore runs Bama Black History 365, an internship program for college students who also want to preserve and share untold African American history in Alabama. Three students are selected for a three-month internship each spring where they will create a documentary for a community. This cohort’s project will highlight the integration of Lee County Schools.

Carr School of Accountancy Hall of Honor, has served as Executive Director of the Alabama State Board of Public Accountancy since May 2015. He is a licensed CPA and holds the Charted Global Management Accountant credential. Busby began his public accounting career with the firm Wilson, Price, Barranco, Blankenship & Billingsley, PC, now Warren Averett, in Montgomery. He served as Chief Financial Officer of Hodges Warehouse & Logistics for 14 years and was the managing member of Hodges Business Services, LLC, for two years. Busby is active with the National Association of State Boards of Accountancy and has held many committee and task force roles over the past 10 years. Busby serves on the board of directors for the Higher Education Partnership, the Better Business Bureau Serving Central and South Alabama, and TROY’s Accountancy’s Advisory Council. He and his wife, Tami, have three children — Kalen ('17), Kaleb (Staff Sgt., USMC), and Karis, who is married to Eli Lowman (Spc. US Army) — and three grandchildren, Olivia Grace, Luca James and Rosemary Cecilia.

Latta, a 1980 honors graduate from TROY and a member of the University’s Board of Trustees, is a Partner in the law firm of Burr & Forman. He is an experienced litigator and a Chambers-rated Appellate Lawyer who heads the firm’s Appellate Practice Team and has handled some 200 appeals of civil liability cases. Latta was named by the Alabama State Bar as its 2025 recipient of the President’s Award, which honors an Alabama lawyer who has demonstrated exceptional service, dedication and contributions to the legal profession and public. The Alabama Defense Lawyers Association honored him with the 2024 Livingston Award for outstanding service to the Defense Bar. He received his law degree from Samford University Cumberland School of Law in 1983. Before law school, he worked as a Radio News Announcer and DJ, winning two Associated Press news awards. He sits on the Alabama Board of Bar Examiners and the Alabama Rules of Evidence committee, is former President of the Mobile Bar Association, is a member of the Board of Advisors of Cumberland School of Law, and is active in the American Camellia Society and several other nonprofits.

He earned his bachelor’s degree in business administration with an emphasis in finance from TROY. He is Past President of the Gainesville Estate Planning Council and the Northwest Florida Estate Planning Council in Pensacola. A 1999 graduate of Leadership Pensacola, Timberlake has served as a Loan Executive for the United Way, a member of the United Way Foundation Board in Pensacola, and a member of the board of Pensacola State College Foundation and the Escambia County 4-H Foundation. He currently serves as President of the Pensacola Bay Area Chapter of the TROY Alumni Association. He and his wife, Candy, have two married daughters and five grandchildren.

Ward, a Dothan, Alabama native, earned a bachelor’s degree in criminal justice from then-Troy State University in 1977, where he lettered in football and was a member of Pi Kappa Phi Fraternity. Ward worked for the J.P. Stevens Company and the Boy Scouts of America after graduating from college before being hired as Executive Vice President of the Automotive Wholesalers' Association of Alabama on Jan. 1, 1981. When he was hired, the association was a single-state association in Alabama. By 2003, the association had gained three new states and changed its name to Automotive Aftermarket Association Southeast, Inc. In 2022, AAAS grew again, adding five more states through a merger with the Automotive Aftermarket Association Mid-South and becoming the largest regional aftermarket association in the country. Ward graduated from the U.S. Chamber of Commerce’s Institute for Organizational Management in 1988. He is former President of the Automotive Wholesaler Association Executives, the Alabama Council of Association Executives, the Troy University Alumni Association Board of Directors and the Alliance State Automotive Aftermarket Associations. He is also former Chairman of the Alabama Highway Users Federation.

'98 Emily Williams Knight is President and CEO of the Texas Restaurant Association and a member of the National Restaurant Association Board. A MUSICAL TRIBUTE FIRST LAURA AARON MIXON MEMORIAL CHORAL SCHOLARSHIP AWARDED This spring, Mia Sanchez, a music education major from Panama City, Florida, was named the first recipient of the Laura Aaron Mixon Memorial Choral Scholarship.

The scholarship honors the legacy of Laura Aaron Mixon, a longtime music educator and former Troy University faculty member who passed away in April 2024. The scholarship was established by the sisters of Sigma Alpha Iota, an international music fraternity, to help support budding choral music educators.

Sanchez received the award during a Concert Chorale performance attended by members of Mixon’s family.

Dr. Diane Orlofsky, Professor Emerita of music and music education and Coordinator of the music education graduate program, spoke during the presentation about Mixon, a former student who became her friend.

“Laura was so many things to me — she was one of the most talented and intuitive students I have ever had the privilege to teach,” Orlofsky said. “She was a member of my choral ensembles and led the way as a gifted singer and pianist. Laura proved to be such a valuable part of the School of Music that we hired her to lead the Collegiate Singers and to teach other courses. Through these years, I valued her as a trusted colleague and a dear friend. She was a part of my home and our family life, and we often had long talks about music and leadership and finding that magical, often elusive work/life balance. Everyone who knew Laura loved her and grieved her loss. We prayed and remembered, but then we felt compelled to

do more to honor her life and legacy by giving back to those very students she taught and nurtured.”

Dr. Scott Sexton, Assistant Professor of music education, described Sanchez as a wonderful student and person with an impressive work ethic.

“She is an innate leader and contributes so much to our choral program and music department,” he said. “She is humble and modest, but very talented. Having known Laura personally, I cannot think of a better inaugural recipient. Mia is a student who will carry on Laura’s legacy of outstanding character and choral excellence.”

“I am truly honored to receive this award,” Sanchez said.

“I did not know Laura, but hearing of the legacy she left has inspired me this past month. The TROY Choirs have always been a home to me, and it brings me joy to serve the singers around me. I hope the endowment of this scholarship continues to spread the light and love Laura had for choirs not only here at TROY but anywhere.”

The scholarship is open to students on the Troy Campus who are pursuing a degree in choral music education. To qualify, students must be a junior or a senior, maintain a 3.0 GPA and provide evidence of their commitment to advancing choral music education and spreading “light and love” through the choral arts.

Now, the two-time TROY graduate is giving back by establishing the Barry Baker Endowed Scholarship to support students pursuing degrees in kinesiology and health promotion.

Baker, owner of Cornerstone Fitness and Wellness in Clanton, Alabama, has dedicated his career to allied health fields. His business, founded nearly 24 years ago, provides both physical therapy and wellness services and employs 30 staff members.

“My whole adult life has been in these fields,” Baker said.

“My daughter, Anna Kathryn, is currently in the program at

TROY. I wanted to support students who are following a similar path.”

Baker, who is legally blind, said the faculty did so much to help him be successful and admits that he remains in touch with many of those professors today. However, one story of his time at TROY still resonates with him today. It involved a phone call during his senior year from TROY Chancellor Dr. Jack Hawkins, Jr. “I’m legally blind, and a couple of years before I came to TROY, Dr. Hawkins came from the Alabama School for the Deaf and Blind to be TROY’s Chancellor. I was the trainer for the baseball team my senior year, and we had been at the conference tournament,” Baker said. “I had missed a

lot of school traveling with the team, and I was really worried about it because I cared about my grades.

Somehow, Dr. Hawkins found out about that, and he called my hotel room on a Sunday and told me not to worry, everything was going to be fine. I was just a month or two from graduating, and he told me that my professors would work with me. Maybe he knew who I was because I was a student with a disability involving my vision. I’m sure he doesn’t remember making that phone call, but it really helped to set my mind at ease and showed me how much he and Troy University cared about students.”

Baker said endowing the scholarship was another way he could give back to the school that had given him so much.

“I think when you are young and you get out of school, you are at a place in your life where you may be getting married or buying your first home. Life is happening and it is happening fast,” he said. “As I got older and began to look at all the things the University did for me in my life, I just wanted to be involved in any way I could to help. I wanted to be involved in the college that I went through to hopefully make it better for the next students that come through. I want to continue to support it through the years in any way I can.”

LEGACY OF LEADERSHIP SCHOLARSHIP HONORS TA B AT H A M A R T I N E A U ’ S PA S S I O N F O R S E R V I C E A new scholarship will honor the memory of TROY alumna Tabatha Martineau by helping eligible students with disabilities.

The Martineau Memorial Scholarship was established

by Georgia-based Tree of Life, Inc., where Martineau volunteered as Chief Financial Officer. She held an undergraduate degree in management and a Master of Accounting from the Sorrell College of Business.

The fund was established by Tree of Life founder Jennifer Hughley Grier ('10), a fellow TROY alumna.

“She served with passion and enjoyed every moment of giving her time, expertise and knowledge to the mission of serving others in need. She leaves behind a legacy of helping others achieve success,” Grier said.

Troy Bank & Trust is donating $1.5 million to the Sorrell College of Business for the creation of the Troy Bank & Trust Community Banking Endowed Chair in honor of Charles Henderson.

“This Chair will carry Charles Henderson’s legacy forward by investing in future generations of financial leaders who, like him, believe in strengthening local communities through service and enterprise,” said TROY Chancellor Dr. Jack Hawkins, Jr. “This generous gift is a powerful example of what happens when like-minded institutions are aligned, like TB&T and Troy University, with both truly dedicated to helping their constituents achieve success through dedicated and caring service. It is not by chance that such synergy exists across TB&T, Troy University and the city of Troy — each is blessed to be direct beneficiaries of one truly extraordinary man, Charles Henderson.”

Henderson was a towering figure in Troy’s history — an entrepreneur, philanthropist and Alabama governor whose

vision helped establish the University in 1887. Following Henderson’s passing in 1937, his will established a perpetual charitable trust that initially funded the construction of schools in Pike County. Today and in perpetuity, the trust distributes financial support to the Charles Henderson Child Health Center, which provides essential healthcare services to children in need as contemplated in Gov. Henderson’s will. Today, the Charles Henderson Trust owns more than 51% of the bank which he and others founded in 1906.

“We are proud to carry forward his vision,” said Sherill Crowe, Chairman of the Henderson Bancshares Board.

“This Chair will not only strengthen the academic foundation of Troy University, but also deepen the connection between our bank and the community we serve. A DAY OF THANKS ANNUAL SCHOLARSHIP BRUNCH C E L E B R AT E S D O N O R S A N D STUDENT SUCCESS Held annually each April, Troy University’s Fred B. Davis Scholarship Brunch recognizes the meaningful connections between donors and students — and the lasting impact of their generosity.

There are currently more than 500 active named scholarship funds within the Troy University Foundation, with some scholarships awarded to multiple students each year. In 2024, TROY again awarded more than $1 million in Foundation scholarships to more than 1,100 students.

“This is truly a day to celebrate,” said Chancellor Dr. Jack Hawkins, Jr., “Life is not about things — it’s not about portfolios — it’s about relationships. Two of the most important words are ‘thank you’ … and we don’t say those words often enough, particularly to those who are special to us and have helped us along the way. Katie Cone, a graduate student and recipient of the William H. Carr Accountancy Day Award, earned her bachelor’s degree in business administration with a concentration in accounting from TROY in 2024.

This year, the Alumni Association Board of Directors and alumni chapters came together to raise $55,277 in support of scholarships and academic initiatives.

Those two words alone will stir emotion around TROY fans and bring with them a flood of memories.

Larry Blakeney manned the sidelines as TROY Football’s head coach for 24 seasons, winning eight conference titles and amassing 178 victories, including a pair of New Orleans Bowl championships.

He retired from TROY’s top spot following the 2014 season and it was not a matter of if, but a matter of when the College Football Hall of Fame would come calling.

The call came this past January and Blakeney was enshrined into the College Football Hall of Fame as a member of the 2025 class, along with Urban Meyer and Nick Saban.

"I think one of the most important appointments at Troy University in Athletics over the last four decades was when we selected Coach Larry Blakeney to head our football program," TROY Chancellor Dr. Jack Hawkins, Jr., said.

"His record speaks for itself. He's a great coach but an even better man. It has been an honor to work with him over a long period of time and, in my estimation, there is no one more deserving of this recognition than Larry Blakeney. He is the epitome of what a coach should be."

Blakeney is one of only two coaches in college football history to guide a program from Division II to the Football Bowl Subdivision. The Birmingham, Alabama, native now becomes the first-ever player or coach in TROY history or Sun Belt Conference (tenure came during SBC membership) history to enter the College Football Hall of Fame.

The 2025 class was officially inducted during the 67th National Football Foundation Annual Awards Dinner on Dec. 9, at the Bellagio Hotel & Casino in Las Vegas.

During his 24 seasons as the TROY head coach, Blakeney won 61.1% of his games, posting a career record of 178113-1. He led the Trojans to five bowl games, securing victories in the 2006 and 2010 New Orleans bowls and appearances in the 2004 Silicon Valley Bowl, the 2008 New Orleans Bowl and the 2010 GMAC Bowl. Prior to TROY's transition to the FBS, he guided the Trojans to seven FCS playoff appearances in eight seasons.

BREAKING NEW GROUND TROJANS COMPETE IN NCAA MEN’S GOLF CHAMPIONSHIP AFTER HISTORIC REGIONAL FINISH The 2025 TROY Men's Golf Team made program history, advancing to the NCAA Championship for the first time in the program's Division I history. Led by Sun Belt Coach of the Year, Clay Bounds, the Trojans earned an at-large berth into the NCAA Regionals and finished fourth at the NCAA Urbana Regional to qualify for the NCAA Championship in Carlsbad, California, where TROY finished as one of the top 30 men's golf programs in the country.

"Playing in the NCAA Championship means everything to the program," Bounds said. "The guys earned it. It's not the outcome that we wanted, but I'm proud of the way we fought. It's a very difficult golf course, and we'll continue to work hard and try and get back here next year.

"I'm always proud of the guys no matter how they play. To get this far is truly a great accomplishment for the guys.

We've worked hard all year, and I couldn't be more proud of this team."

TROY entered the Urbana Regional as the No. 9 seed, the highest in program history and the Trojans' first Regional appearance since 2017. Bounds' squad entered the final round holding on to the fifth and final qualifying spot and held off a feverish rally from No. 10 North Carolina and jumped past No. 23 Texas Tech to finish fourth.

Championship for the first time in history is just a feeling like no other."

TROY's run to greatness started the first week of the season with the Trojans claiming victory at the Argent Financial Classic in Ruston, Louisiana. The Trojans finished the fall ranked No. 81 in the country and climbed to No. 46 in the spring, sparked by the return of Scott to the lineup. TROY added a second tournament victory in the spring, winning the Daytona Beach Intercollegiate.

The Trojans finished the season with 119 head-to-head victories, the most by a TROY squad in the program's Division I history and the most since the 1983-84 NCAA Division II National Championship squad racked up 138 head-to-head wins.

Scott earned TROY's first All-American honor in more than three decades and finished the season ranked No. 41 in

the country. Jake Springer, who became the first Trojan to win two individual tournaments since 2007, joined Scott on the All-Sun Belt First Team, and Nick Fowlkes earned an All-Sun Belt Third Team nod. Sophomore Lee Poppell and Pablo Gracia played in all 13 tournaments and combined to shoot 18 rounds under par.

TROY's success continued into the summer months, where Scott and freshman, Pierce Becker, played in the final US Open Qualifier. Scott missed playing in the US Open by four shots but was inside the number for 95 percent of the tournament.

Scott secured his spot on the PGA Tour Americas for the 2025-26 season by shooting 14-under and tying for sixth place at a qualifier in mid-June, while Poppell and Springer were named to the College Sports Communicators Academic All-District Team.

The TROY Men's Basketball Team celebrates a Sun Belt Conference Tournament championship, which earned a berth in the NCAA Tournament against Kentucky.

ATHLETICS

It was a historic run on the hardwood for the TROY Men's and Women's Basketball programs this past season.

The TROY men's team, led by Head Coach Scott Cross, made the program's first trip to March Madness since 2017 after winning the Sun Belt regular season and tournament titles, while Chanda Rigby's women's team advanced to the championship game of the Women's National Invitational Tournament.

The TROY men posted a 23-11 overall record and a 13-5 mark in the Sun Belt. The Trojans' 23 wins were its most since the 2003-04 season and marked the fourth straight season the program reached 20-plus wins, the most in the Sun Belt.

TROY defeated Old Dominion and James Madison by a combined 35 points in the Sun Belt quarterfinals and semifinals, respectively, before using a 36-15 run over the final 10 minutes against Arkansas State in the Sun Belt Conference Championship Game in a 94-81 victory over the Red Wolves.

"The last time I was in the NCAA Tournament was 2008.

I don't take this for granted by any means," Cross said following TROY's win over Arkansas State. "This is one of the hardest things to do, especially in the Sun Belt,

because there are 14 teams, and they are very close in terms of talent and ability. It's a different league. It's a gauntlet."

The Trojans squared off against No. 3 seed Kentucky in the second round of the NCAA Tournament in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, and used an 11-4 run in the second half to get within six points of the Wildcats before UK pulled away for the victory.

TROY's appearance in the NCAA Tournament landed the Trojans in primetime as the game was broadcast on CBS in the 6 p.m. slot.

The Trojans entered their NCAA Tournament appearance having won six straight games and eight of their last nine.

Tayton Conerway earned Sun Belt Conference Player of the Year honors and Cross picked up the 100th win of his TROY career in the regular season finale, a 70-58 victory at Southern Miss to clinch the regular season title.

On the women's side, TROY's run to the WNIT Championship Game was a grueling affair. After home wins over Chattanooga and North Texas, in overtime, Rigby's crew played three straight games on the road — all without coming home — with stops in Fargo, North Dakota; Normal, Illinois; and finally, Buffalo, New York.

"This was a special team," Rigby said following her showdown against Buffalo. "This team took us to new heights, taking us to a shot at a national championship.

They wanted to win this game for TROY. We're beyond brokenhearted that we couldn't do that, but we must be grateful for all the glorious moments throughout this season. The relationships made throughout this season will never be taken away. I've never seen so much growth from a team. I'm grateful for my coaches and the work they put in all season and these players for trusting in us and laying it all on the line."

The Trojans' success started early in the season as they became the first Sun Belt Conference team to win the historic Great Alaska Shootout, becoming the 41st winner with an 86-69 victory over North Dakota State.

A month later, TROY defeated SEC opponent Arkansas 77-69 for the program's fourth-ever win over a Power-4 team.

TROY broke its program record for points (3,045), field goals made (1,142), rebounds (1,864) and blocks (180).

Additionally, the Trojans finished as a Top 4 seed in the Sun Belt Conference for the 10th straight season and led the country in rebounding for the eighth straight season with 49.1 per game.

TROY Athletics produced many memorable moments during the 2024-25 season.

In the arena of competition, there was plenty to be excited about, from winning Sun Belt championships to reaching the championship game of the WNIT and playing for a national championship for the first time in the department’s Division I history.

Outside of the competitive realm, the success was equally as impressive in terms of community service hours volunteered to academic achievements and revenue generation for the department.

The athletic successes are easy to find.

Men’s Basketball won the Sun Belt regular season and tournament titles en route to its first appearance in March Madness since 2017. Women’s Basketball advanced all the way to the championship game of the WNIT, despite a grueling postseason schedule that included three straight road games to close out the WNIT. As the weather turned warmer, TROY baseball was ranked the entire regular season (one of 11 teams nationally), winning each of its first 13 weekend series, including one over eventual national runner-up Coastal Carolina, while the Men’s Golf team played for an NCAA Championship for the first time in the program’s Division I history after finishing fourth at the NCAA Urbana Regional.

Individually, Tori Hester became TROY’s first volleyball All-American, while Brantley Scott became TROY’s first AllAmerican in Men’s Golf in more than two decades. Tayton Conerway was named the Sun Belt Men’s Basketball Player of the Year, while men’s golf Head Coach Clay Bounds earned SBC Coach of the Year honors.

Off the field, TROY student-athletes logged more than 3,000 community service hours, the most in department history, while posting a 3.09 GPA for the year, including a department record 3.20 GPA in the spring semester.

The record-breaking spring saw 13 of TROY’s 16 programs finish with a 3.0 GPA or greater, while seven programs posted a 3.50 GPA or greater.

Additionally, TROY saw a 20% increase in sponsorships year-over-year and posted the highest single-year figure in department history. Officially licensed sales increased 30% with a record-breaking year and philanthropic giving increased 80%. Football season ticket sales topped the 12,000 mark for a third straight year, basketball ticket revenue increased by 39% and baseball revenue by 40%.
