NATIONAL PAN-HELLENIC COUNCIL The National Pan-Hellenic Council at Troy University welcomes you to the experience of Greek Life! NPHC is the governing body of the nine largest historically African American Greek-letter fraternities and sororities, currently representing over 1.5 million members internationally. At Troy University, we have eight of the nine NPHC organizations. The organization boasts a diverse membership comprised of students, celebrities, corporate, political and community leaders. NPHC organizations are all unique with respect to other Greek-letter organizations in that they embrace a service-oriented philosophy and aim to promote the continuance of social action, political empowerment and economic development. The National Pan-Hellenic Council organizations are profoundly committed to providing community service and uplifting and promoting the general public welfare.

HISTORY The National Pan-Hellenic Council (NPHC) was established in 1930 at Howard University as the national coordinating body for the nine historically African American fraternities and sororities that had emerged on college and university campuses across the United States. At a time when racial discrimination prevented many African American students from joining predominantly white fraternities and sororities — and, in many cases, from attending certain institutions altogether — Black students founded their own organizations to enhance scholarship and lifelong service. Although these organizations were created in response to systemic exclusion, they have never restricted membership based on race. Instead, they have cultivated a rich tradition rooted in African American culture, emphasizing academic excellence, civic engagement, community service and leadership. Today, the NPHC’s member organizations continue to make a lasting impact on campuses and in communities around the world. While the comradery and social traditions of Greek life are embraced by NPHC affiliate organizations, their primary mission is rooted in community awareness and action through educational, economic and cultural service activities. NPHC affiliates and their respective members pledge to devote their resources to service in their communities, understanding that membership in an NPHC organization goes beyond an individual’s collegiate experience. Membership in an NPHC organization is a lifelong commitment, and members are encouraged to uphold the values and ideals of their organization through continued service. Following graduation, many remain active by joining alumni chapters, attending regional and national conferences, participating in conventions, and supporting programs that create meaningful change in their communities.

The National Pan-Hellenic Council organizations at Troy University select members through Membership Intake. Membership Intake, which is the process of selecting, educating and initiating new members into an NPHC chapter. Each NPHC organization follows its national guidelines to conduct intake, which may include interest meetings, informational sessions, rush events and meet and greets.
NPHC Convocation is an open forum for interested students to learn more about our chapters. Each chapter provides a brief background on its national and chapter history, shares its involvement on campus and in the local community, and answers questions about the organization’s membership intake process. Convocation is offered twice each year — in August and January.
To be eligible for membership intake, students must meet the following university and council requirements:
Attendance at NPHC Convocation is required once a year for students seeking membership. It covers eligibility, expectations, intake procedures, and anti-hazing policies to promote a safe, respectful environment.
• Complete at least 12 Troy University institutional credit hours • Be enrolled at Troy University with a 2.5 or higher GPA • Completed community service hours • Be in good standing with the university • Attend NPHC Convocation once per academic year Please note that individual chapters may have additional requirements beyond those listed above. Letters of recommendation from alumni are typically required, and each student’s proven record of campus leadership and community service is evaluated during the intake process. NPHC organizations may conduct membership intake each semester, skip semesters or hold an intake every other year. The timing of membership intake is determined by each individual organization.
DRESS CODE All convocation attendees are expected to wear business attire to present a formal, polished and professional appearance. Women: • Dress: Knee-length, modest, elegant • Fit and Style: Neat, simple patterns or solid colors • Shoes: Closed-toe flats or heels • Accessories: Subtle and professional Men: • Slacks: Neutral dress pants (no jeans) • Shirt and Tie: Long-sleeve button-down, professional tie • Shoes: Dress shoes • Optional: Blazer or suit jacket
Any student who participates in illegal intake activities, such as hazing, may jeopardize their opportunity of becoming a member of the organization and may be barred from membership for life.
