ROOMS ON THE RIVER Troy has always been home to entrepreneurs who blaze new trails in business. Ethan Smith is one of them. In 2010, he founded SmithFly Designs, a company that designs and builds gear for flyfishers and hunters, including inflatable boats and paddle boards, modular gear packs, apparel and a first-of-its-kind floating tent called the Shoal Tent. Troy provides the perfect location for SmithFly where products can be tested and demonstrated just steps away on the Great Miami River. The innovative floating tent has been used by students from the University of Dayton River Stewards program who camped on the river in Troy. They are also available to rent during limited times from local outfitters for anyone who wants to experience a one-of-a-kind river camping adventure just off the shores of Treasure Island Park.

A HOMETOWN TOUCH: FULTON FARMS One of the many benefits of Troy’s location is the abundance of fertile farmland nearby. Residents take advantage of this by weaving local, organic fruits and vegetables into their way of life. Fulton Farms is a prime example of how easy this is to do in Troy.

“Troy city leaders were very encouraging and good to work with,” Smith said of his experience developing and opening the destination restaurant. “They really emphasize the quality of everything in Troy – the quality of businesses, the quality of entertainment and the quality of life.” Larry Smith, O wner, Smiths’ Boathouse Restaurant

By the numbers 1200 + DESTINATION DINING When Troy city planners approached Larry Smith about opening a restaurant in an old marina in the city’s recently renovated Treasure Island Park, he was actually thinking about retiring from his other successful business that he has operated in Troy for more than 35 years and finally taking some time to relax. After taking a look at the property, however, he saw an opportunity. He saw possibility. He saw the future. So, with Smith’s long family history in the restaurant business and a vision for the 1946-era boathouse, he set to work and opened Smiths’ Boathouse Restaurant in 2016. Smiths’ Boathouse has become a favorite seafood and steak restaurant offering a nautical theme, fantastic food, banquet and event areas, and exquisite views from its picturesque location on the Great Miami River. DOUG & KATE LINS “We live in the Southwest Historic District of Troy in a house that was built in 1856. We love Troy because everything we want to do is so accessible and close at hand. We also have a very active neighborhood. We have a neighborhood dinner club, we plan social events, and it’s a safe and friendly area. Our neighbors watch out for us and we do the same for them.” Kate Lins, Troy resident

A ROBUST HOUSING MARKET Both large and small companies in a variety of industries keep Troy humming and support a healthy housing market. Troy is seeing robust residential development to accommodate the housing needs of a diverse population drawn to the area by the businesses and institutions that operate here. And while we are proud of our growth and progress, careful planning allows us to maintain a balance of natural green spaces so important to our environment and our residents. The cost of living in Troy is one to be envied. According to bestplaces.net, Troy ‘s cost of

living is a full 10 percent lower than the national average and up to 20 percent lower than cities like Chicago. Housing costs are one of the biggest factors in cost-of-living differences between Troy and other major cities. Shorter commute times, lower utility costs, and a greater diversity of lifestyle options compared to larger metropolitan markets are also a plus. No matter what your housing preferences are, a Troy address offers value and hometown appeal while still being convenient to both work and play including world-class entertainment, college and professional sporting events, dining, and shopping.

DOWNTOWN LIVING IN STYLE Wade Westfall, owner of Four Sons Development, has been bringing old buildings back to life in downtown Troy for more than three decades. He’s busier than ever these days with a hot market for downtown residential spaces like the townhomes at 301-305 W. Water Street, one of his recent projects. It’s a market that shows no signs of slowing down. In fact, as an empty nester, he became a downtown resident himself just a few years ago.

“The TroyHayner Cultural Center is unique in this world. Everything we do is related to the arts. We focus on classes, exhibits and music, and we are absolutely volunteer driven. The energy of our volunteers makes everything come to life. Investing in the arts is a way of investing in the magic inside ourselves.” Terrilynn Meece,

SCULPTURES ON THE SQUARE Every other year during the summer months, life-sized public art takes up residence on the streets of downtown Troy. Sculptures on the Square, a biennial outdoor exhibit that features different themes and works of art each time, recently featured more than 20 bronze statues by internationally renowned artist Seward Johnson along with other works of art by regional artists. The sculptures depicted people engaged in scenes from everyday life, such as gardening and reading, while some represented iconic, historic events or famous paintings. The exhibit is made possible through a grant from the Troy Foundation and is sponsored by the city of Troy (in kind) as well as many other generous individual and corporate donors.

Once the host to Elvis Presley, Hobart Arena continues to set the stage for some of today’s most popular touring musical acts and other performances. With a seating capacity of more than 2,000, you’ll find a great view from every seat in the house. It also houses a permanent display of the Troy Hall of Fame which honors the achievements of Troy’s most illustrious citizens. Inductees represent the world of business, athletics, science and the arts, among others.  HOBARTARENA.COM

built in 1888, houses the Miami County Municipal Court. It features ornate Beaux Arts style architecture with a limestone exterior. It is topped by a statue of Lady Justice and includes four clock faces that can be seen from all directions on its dome. The courthouse was placed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1975.

“Other communities have the same amount of people and resources, but they just don’t have what Troy has to offer. Troy is unique with access to so many amenities and it is well-positioned for growth. It’s got it all, and the people I work with really make the difference. They work nonstop to make sure the community has what it needs.”

THE PUBLIC SQUARE AND PROUTY PLAZA a re considered the centerpiece of downtown Troy. Originally designed in 1807, it features handsome Victorian-age buildings, many of which are listed on the National Register of Historical Places. The architectural charm is enhanced by a high-curbed central garden complete with a large fountain and seasonal plantings. Prouty Plaza provides the backdrop for many concerts and community activities throughout the year.
