TROWBRIDGE | Archive Black and White

The Archive Collection THE UNDERSTATED, graphic beauty of black and white photography has long been appreciated by discerning art lovers.

Photographs from our archive collection are in a class of their own.

"We were fortunate enough to have access to one of the world's outstanding photographic libraries, housing millions of images taken from photography's beginnings right up to the present day," explains Martin Trowbridge.

"We knew that these were just the sort of exceptional, unusual works that would appeal to our customers, and we've selected the most striking to form the basis of the TROWBRIDGE Archive Collection.

A careful look through the 400-plus photos reveals images celebrating everything from 20th century sporting icons and Hollywood greats to wildlife and natural phenomena, plus, says Martin, "anything quirky or just downright peculiar that caught our eye".

Particularly special are the TROWBRIDGE range of Hollywood Greats, simply because it's so unusual to see images of utterly familiar faces in unfamiliar poses.

"Because these images are unfamiliar, you're forced to look at the personalities afresh – and to marvel at true star quality, a commodity that seems lost to us here in the 21st century," says Martin.

Black and white photography works in a wide variety of settings from domestic interiors to corporate environments.

Images are produced to Archive standards, embossed with the TROWBRIDGE stamp, most are limited edition of 295 and come with a Certificate of Authenticity.

Charlie Waite LANDSCAPE photographer Charlie Waite's spectacular light filled images are instantly recognisable and his distinctive style has swiftly taken him to the top of his profession.

His work complements modern decorative style and its popularity is constantly growing.

Appropriately, for the world's leading landscape photographer, Charlie lives in the Dorset countryside in a picturesque mill with his studio overlooking a millstream and its own island for ducks and wildfowl.

Charlie started his working life as an actor and during those years he learned to appreciate the importance of lighting.

When parts became sporadic he turned his talents to taking photographic portraits of his fellow actors. It was this that taught him the value of studying a subject and taking time to absorb the essential elements of a composition.

He freely admits that he is persistent and tenacious in pursuit of the perfect shot; once spending the best part of five days eight feet up a ladder in freezing January weather to capture an iconic image of The Somme in France.

"I knew what quality of light I was waiting for, and from what direction and how widespread it needed to be, but for me that is an accepted part of the procedure. This wish for light may not materialise, but I always remain hopeful that light will arrive and unlock the image," Charlie explained.

His first real foray into landscape photography came when his actress wife, Jess, was filming in Devon. "I went along and got a bit bored so I took off with a Nikon camera to photograph the countryside. Although it was pretty haphazard I soon found myself responding," he recalls.

Charlie's landscape photography style is unique in that his photographs convey a spiritual quality of serenity and calm.

He has established a worldwide reputation for this particular approach to landscape photography. His photographs are held in private and corporate collections throughout the world.

Charlie Waite is currently working on his 28th book of landscape photography.

David Bache THIS COLLECTION of photographs was taken in the gardens that surround Chiswick House, London, England.

Created by Lord Burlington in 1725, their design was inspired by the architecture and gardens of ancient Rome. Buildings and obelisks are placed at the ends of

avenues in the Baroque manner. Classical busts, sphinxes, an amphitheatre and several small pavilions help to recreate the landscape of antiquity.

William Kent added classical illusions by designing a rustic cascade and a gently serpentined canal.

Willie Christie Fashion Fashion photographer turned film-maker Willie Christie made his name working with the British edition of Vogue magazine. His talent was spotted by the legendary Grace Coddrington whom he later married. Apart from his work on the magazine he also shot album covers for the likes of the Rolling Stones and David Bowie. He has curated this collection of 18 classic black and white fashion images from his extensive archive of photographs.

Ben Wood THE ENGLISH photographer Ben Wood started his career at the age of twenty-one following in the footsteps of his great-grandfather who ran a portrait studio in Baker Street, London.

After a few years assisting photographers such as David Bailey and Don Freeman, Ben struck out on his own running a studio in Bleeding Heart Yard, London.

Ben is best known for his signature sepia marine work but he has diversified widely since joining TROWBRIDGE in 2003, and now has an impressive selection of work encompassing classic motor-racing, horse racing, landscapes and successful shell series.

Having moved out of London in 2000, Ben Wood is now based at his studio in Bembridge on the Isle of Wight. Living on the island with its beautiful landscape and world class sailing at Cowes inspires Ben's ever evolving portfolio.

Beken OUR WONDERFUL collection of sepia photographs are immensely evocative of times gone by. These images have been successful since we first launched them.

Frank Beken

The yachts shown here are our best-sellers. Since 1888, the cameras of the Beken of Cowes' family have captured the beauty and splendour of sail; from the magnificent cutters, schooners and J class yachts of the 20s and 30s, to today's ocean-going thoroughbreds.

Working from the original glass plate negative, each image has been printed and hand finished in sepia tones. The founder of the archive, Frank Beken (pictured), took up photography at an early age and was soon afloat in a 14-foot dinghy photographing the vessels that sailed up and down the Solent.

Subsequent generations have kept up this tradition. The family earned a Royal Warrant from Queen Victoria and now Beken of Cowes holds a Royal Warrant as marine photographer to the Duke of Edinburgh.

Carleton Watkins CARLETON WATKINS found international fame for his award-winning photographs of Yosemite, San Francisco, the Pacific coast and subjects throughout the western states of the US. He was born in New York in 1829 and in 1851 he joined the California gold rush. He didn't find gold but did meet

Robert Vance who taught him his photographic skills.

By 1858 he was working on his own, taking on a number of commissions, and in 1861 he travelled to Yosemite to take pictures which would help establish his name. This series of vintage pictures are from prints held in the Royal Geographical Society’s Archive in London.

Allison Paladino at TROWBRIDGE THIS EXCITING and vibrant collection of framed images entitled Foot Prints From Around the Globe is by designer Allison Paladino for TROWBRIDGE. Allison, who was named one of House Beautiful’s Top 25 young designers in America, keeps a photo archive of anything and everything that she discovers through her travels.

Not all motifs in her collection are historic or external.

Karma, for instance, expresses her bubbly and contagious smile. Her collection with TROWBRIDGE is a boutique line with a wide range of colour palettes to choose from for each design. The combinations range from peaceful and calming to fun and alive. Framing is a choice of walnut, white, black or silver. Matting is a crisp, clean, soft white.

Each image is signed and numbered by Allison and is of a Limited Edition set of 295.

As with her newly launched furniture collection in conjunction with E J Victor, these new art pieces are so SHUVRQDEOH EHFDXVH $OOLVRQ À OWHUV HYHU\WKLQJ VKH GHVLJQV through her unique sensibilities – a slight-of-hand she learned early in her career from her key mentor Thomas Pheasant. “I enjoy taking inspirations like these and putting my own spin on them. To me, interpreting iconic motifs and giving them a fresh, contemporary vibe is what the art of design is all about,” she says.

She drew inspiration from this veritable treasure trove of memories, whether it be an antique Chinese motif – which inspired Mandarin and Zen – or African Kuba cloths – which was the jumping off point for Sun & Moon – or the many cars she has seen as she travels across the country with her husband, an avid car collector, which was the revelation behind Grillwork.

Angie Horder ANGIE HORDER'S watercolour paintings are in numerous private collections throughout Europe.

She was born in London in 1945 where she was also educated.

She studied graphics and

printmaking at Kingston School of Art and has worked as a designer, etcher, painter and illustrator ever since.

With a post graduate teaching degree she taught in London while

continuing to exhibit and work as an illustrator for Vogue and Brides magazines.

Before raising her three sons she moved to Switzerland and worked in Locarno for artist Francois Lafranca.

Elizabeth Ockford ELIZABETH OCKFORD joined the renowned English fabrics and wallpaper company Osborne and Little in 1999, working her way up through the studio and becoming the company’s Design Director in 2002.

She now divides her time working professionally as a freelance textile designer for companies at the top end of the interiors Industry, designing fabrics and wallpapers as well as her own art in her studio based in an old jam factory in the village where she lives in West Sussex (which also boasts its own steam railway).

She works in a variety of media, and her subject matters are usually natural - either landscape, floral or animal.

Her flowers for TROWBRIDGE featured on pages 186-187 have been created using black ink onto a ground made using gesso and pigment.

Her work has been sold privately around the world.

Ian Weatherhead ARCHITECTURE, humour and a quirky perspective are strong themes running through painter Ian Weatherhead's work, which often depict social and sporting events, alongside notable landmarks and features of land and seascapes.

He was a pupil of the stained glass artist and watercolourist William Wilson who, like John Piper and

Raoul Dufy left a lasting impression. Ian worked as an architect until the late 1980's when he turned to painting full-time.

Whatever his subject, the spontaneity of Ian’s paintings evokes an enjoyment of life. He is one of Britain’s most original watercolourists, achieving the recognition he rightly deserves for his masterly paintings.

Aviva began her career in textile design focusing on fashion runway work for close to six years before she launched her current collection of home textiles. Her clients included top fashion houses in New York, London and Paris.

Aviva's work is known for her combination of sophistication and subtlety. Each one-of-a-kind concept is hand-crafted with attention to design and detail as traditional embellishments meet cutting-edge textile treatments exclusive to her design studio.

Ankasa Ferns THIS STUNNING collection of hand-embroidered framed textiles has been designed by Ankasa exclusively for TROWBRIDGE. This set of four ferns can be adapted to create a number of different configurations, with the intricate design hand-embroidered onto Tiffany blue linen.

Ankasa'a collaboration with TROWBRIDGE began in January 2008 with the launch of designs inspired by the natural world - this collection of eight intricate beaded textiles became instant best sellers. See page 176. The blue version of the design, featured on Carrie Bradshaw's bedroom wall, in the film Sex and the City 2.

Ankasa has a successful background in the couture and ready to wear fashion world - clients include Oscar de la Renta, Escada and Vera Wang - and they have utilised many 'couture' finishing techniques in TROWBRIDGE collections - they are embroidered by hand and the colour palettes used mirror what is presented on the fashion catwalk.

Lyndi Sales ANYONE WHO has admired the delicate intricacy of her work, will understand why South African Lyndi Sales is TROWBRIDGE's best-selling artist. She's renowned world-wide for her thought-provoking multidimensional works in paper and her installations featuring birds and animals.

For her collaboration with TROWBRIDGE, however, Lyndi has drawn inspiration from a long-held fascination with early 17th century botanical engravings, works that she first encountered when studying for her Master's degree at the University of Cape Town.

Each picture is embossed with Lyndi Sale's stamp and then signed by her

"I found so much beauty in the engravings of those early 17th century botanical artists pioneers such as Basilius Besler, who nurtured, catalogued and painted new species of plants in such meticulous detail. I really appreciated the way in which the works are able to be both complex and simply descriptive at one and the same time."

When it came to creating her own engravings in a style that paid homage to those earlier artists, Lyndi felt that the paper she used should be just as key as the images themselves. "Continuing the natural, antique theme, I decided to use hand-made paper.

"I'm fortunate in that I am able to source this from a paper mill just a few miles from my studio. It's made from reeds from the Black River and has a wonderful subtle colour and texture."

The etchings are produced with a sharp etching needle onto copper-plate; the more detailed the image, the longer it will take to produce - the tree images Lyndi produces for TROWBRIDGE, for instance, are particularly labour-intensive.

A number of resists, including wax and a ground substance called rosin, can be applied to mask areas of the plate before it is submerged in an acid bath.

The acid bites into the copper and thereby creates different types of tone and finish.

The completed plate is then heated, ink is applied and wiped away so that it's left only in the grooves of the etching. The dampened paper is then applied to the plate and the image is pressed through an old style etching press.

Finally, Lyndi hand-colours and signs each image.

"The printing process itself is meditative, almost mesmeric. But what I really love is the actual engraving - searching through ancient images for inspiration, doing my research into the plants I am depicting and choosing the final colours for each work," she says.

Although Lyndi's are modern pieces, their look and feel is very much that of a period piece. So what does she feel she brings from the 21st century to her decidedly antique looking work?

"Accessibility," she says.

"Not only are 17th century originals today priceless, when they first appeared they were groundbreaking, only produced in very small numbers and extremely costly.

"I, on the other hand, am able to produce and distribute my work far more quickly and easily. And, of course, because the works depict the natural world, they're timeless."

Meridith Martens FROM HER first art commission in high school, Meridith Martens has had a lifelong passion for putting the world around her on canvas and paper. She is equally comfortable with realism and abstract and the infinite range of expression between them.

Meridith Martens was born in Illinois, and her Navy family eventually settled in Annapolis where she combined her love of horses with her artistic talent and a gifted painter of horses emerged.

She attended the New School in New York, the Corcoran in Washington and studied under Volang in Paris. As she grew, her work evolved and portraits and abstracts shared her passion.

Meridith's painting of the World Trade Center, created just days after September 11, travelled the world for two years with the True Colors exhibit, an artists' response to the tragic events of that day.

She now lives in North Carolina and continues to enhance her portfolio with a blend of animal portraits, expressive abstracts and corporate commissions. She has recently completed illustrating a children's Christmas book and is working on commissioned paintings.

Basilius Besler THE MOST celebrated florilegium ever published - the Hortus Eystettensis - is the record of the gardens of the Prince Bishop of Eichstatt. The gardens were completed by Basilius Besler: a pharmacist renowned for his own, smaller garden in Nuremburg.

One of the earliest records of flowers from a specific documented garden, the work is exceptional in every sense, from the variety and range of flowers - over 1, 000 wild and cultivated species from Europe, Africa and the New World - to the quality of the 366 copperplate engravings.

The gardens, along with most of the town of Eichstatt, were destroyed by the invading Swedish troops led by Herzog von Weimer in 1633 during the Thirty Years War.

Giuseppe Castiglioni THE PERIOD of Emperor Qianlong was the most prosperous time in the Qing Dynasty of Chinese history. Chinese art was at its peak and Italian Giuseppe Castiglioni was among the most renowned artists in the land.

The Imperial Court of Emperor Qianlong was a long way from Milan's San Macellino district where Giuseppe was born in 1688. This was where he studied painting

with Carlo Cornara of the renowned Botteghe Degli Stampator studio. His life took a dramatic turn when in 1709 he became a Jesuit and six years later was sent to China by the Catholic Church as a missionary. It was here that he was to find fame - not for his missionary work - but for his artistic skills. So admired was he that he remained in China for 51 years serving three Emperors.

His style was a unique blend of European painting

with Chinese subjects and themes. Giuseppe is best known for his work on an awe-inspiring project to create an Imperial City of Summer Palaces and Gardens whose beauty not only rivalled that of the Forbidden City - but which was ten times bigger.

This collection of 12 plates of the Gardens from TROWBRIDGE are re-issues from the work completed by Giuseppe in 1763. They date from the turn of the 20th century and were, incredibly, found in a Parisian

basement, after which the collection was purchased by Martin Trowbridge.

It is thought they are all that remain from a published edition which was given as a present by French embassies throughout the world to visiting dignitaries. There are only three recorded copies of the original edition in the world; one in Harvard, one in the Bibliotheque Natinonale, Paris, and one in private hands.

Ando Hiroshige ANDO HIROSHIGE is regarded as one of Japan's finest artists. He began his career in the early 19th century by producing intricate wood block prints of women, then moved on to concentrate on flower and bird images and the Japanese landscapes on which his reputation is founded.

What makes his work so special is its sense of atmosphere, and the uniquely sensitive way in which

the natural world is evoked.

Hiroshige's work first became popular in the West during the late nineteenth century, influencing artists such as van Gogh.

Today, the lyricism and sensitivity of his work continues to entrance and inspire art-lovers world-wide.

All orders must be in writing on headed paper.

Show Samples All show samples must be paid for in full at the show when the order is placed.

All samples are sold as seen and all sample sales are final.

Credit (In the US) First orders must be pre-paid at the time of placing the order.

Delivery

Beaded Textiles We will do our utmost to ensure your order is shipped within six weeks. However on occasions, due to circumstances outside of our control, it may take longer.

We will notify you of any delay but we cannot be held responsible for any claims made as a result of the delay.

Shipping Standard Packing and Shipping charges will apply.

UK and International frames are ex-factory Sussex. US frames are FOB High Point.

Payment

For established customers, we offer the option of 30-day credit in the US, this is subject to approval from our factoring partner.

Should for any reason credit be refused, the order must be paid for in full before production.

Returns All of our products are custom made to order and as such we cannot accept returns.
