TROWBRIDGE | Archive Black and White

The Archive Collection THE UNDERSTATED, graphic beauty of black and white photography has long been appreciated by discerning art lovers. Photographs from our archive collection are in a class of their own. "We were fortunate enough to have access to one of the world's outstanding photographic libraries, housing millions of images taken from photography's beginnings right up to the present day," explains Martin Trowbridge. "We knew that these were just the sort of exceptional, unusual works that would appeal to our customers, and we've selected the most striking to form the basis of the TROWBRIDGE Archive Collection. A careful look through the 400-plus photos reveals images celebrating everything from 20th century sporting icons and Hollywood greats to wildlife and natural phenomena, plus, says Martin, "anything quirky or just downright peculiar that caught our eye". Particularly special are the TROWBRIDGE range of Hollywood Greats, simply because it's so unusual to see images of utterly familiar faces in unfamiliar poses. "Because these images are unfamiliar, you're forced to look at the personalities afresh â&#x20AC;&#x201C; and to marvel at true star quality, a commodity that seems lost to us here in the 21st century," says Martin. Black and white photography works in a wide variety of settings from domestic interiors to corporate environments. Images are produced to Archive standards, embossed with the TROWBRIDGE stamp, most are limited edition of 295 and come with a Certificate of Authenticity. All Archive Photographs are available in two sizes:

Martyn Colbeck MARTYN COLBECK'S love affair with elephants was first sparked in the '90s when he was commissioned to fly to the Amboseli National Park in Kenya to photograph elephants for David Attenborough's Trials of Life TV series. The subjects chosen for this collection are the only

truly free, wild ranging elephants in Africa. "What I am trying to convey in this set of photographs is what it is about the elephants that make them special. I wanted to capture something of their character," he says.

Charlie Waite LANDSCAPE photographer Charlie Waite's spectacular light filled images are instantly recognisable and his distinctive style has swiftly taken him to the top of his profession. His work complements modern decorative style and its popularity is constantly growing. Appropriately, for the world's leading landscape photographer, Charlie lives in the Dorset countryside in a picturesque mill with his studio overlooking a millstream and its own island for ducks and wildfowl. Charlie started his working life as an actor and during those years he learned to appreciate the importance of lighting. When parts became sporadic he turned his talents to taking photographic portraits of his fellow actors. It was this that taught him the value of studying a subject and taking time to absorb the essential elements of a composition. He freely admits that he is persistent and tenacious in pursuit of the perfect shot; once spending the best part of five days eight feet up a ladder in freezing January weather to capture an iconic image of The Somme in France. "I knew what quality of light I was waiting for, and from what direction and how widespread it needed to be, but for me that is an accepted part of the procedure. This wish for light may not materialise, but I always remain hopeful that light will arrive and unlock the image," Charlie explained. His first real foray into landscape photography came when his actress wife, Jess, was filming in Devon. "I went along and got a bit bored so I took off with a Nikon camera to photograph the countryside. Although it was pretty haphazard I soon found myself responding," he recalls. Charlie's landscape photography style is unique in that his photographs convey a spiritual quality of serenity and calm. He has established a worldwide reputation for this particular approach to landscape photography. His photographs are held in private and corporate collections throughout the world. Charlie Waite is currently working on his 28th book of landscape photography.

David Bache THIS COLLECTION of photographs was taken in the gardens that surround Chiswick House, London, England. Created by Lord Burlington in 1725, their design was inspired by the architecture and gardens of ancient Rome. Buildings and obelisks are placed at the ends of

avenues in the Baroque manner. Classical busts, sphinxes, an amphitheatre and several small pavilions help to recreate the landscape of antiquity. William Kent added classical illusions by designing a rustic cascade and a gently serpentined canal.

Ben Wood THE ENGLISH photographer Ben Wood started his career at the age of twenty-one following in the footsteps of his great-grandfather who ran a portrait studio in Baker Street, London. After a few years assisting photographers such as David Bailey and Don Freeman, Ben struck out on his own running a studio in Bleeding Heart Yard, London. Ben is best known for his signature sepia marine work but he has diversified widely since joining TROWBRIDGE in 2003, and now has an impressive selection of work encompassing classic motor-racing, horse racing, landscapes and successful shell series. Having moved out of London in 2000, Ben Wood is now based at his studio in Bembridge on the Isle of Wight. Stuart Redler Diptychs Stuart Redler is a bold photographer who works exclusively in black and white and has a cultivated talent for capturing the unexpected and sometime humorous subject matters. Stuart unifies his work with striking aesthetic, unusual perspectives and exceptional detail so whatever the subject, be it a geometric architectural structure, iconic landmark, facet of nature or interesting people, his approach remains the same. His innovative view point derives from his adventurous nature and taste for travel. Excursions to Venice, Paris, London, New York and Africa have contributed to his hugely diverse collections. He moves between different subject matter always creating a photograph with character. He combines the varied subjects with his style of intense contrasts of black and white and use of strong light which give his pictures their stark and unique style, confirming that the piece is one of his. Beken OUR WONDERFUL collection of sepia photographs are immensely evocative of times gone by. These images have been successful since we first launched them.

The yachts shown here are our best-sellers. Since 1888, the cameras of the Beken of Cowes' family have captured the beauty and splendour of sail; from the magnificent cutters, schooners and J class yachts of the 20s and 30s, to today's ocean-going thoroughbreds. Working from the original glass plate negative, each image has been printed and hand finished in sepia tones. The founder of the archive, Frank Beken (pictured), took up photography at an early age and was soon afloat in a 14-foot dinghy photographing the vessels that sailed up and down the Solent. Subsequent generations have kept up this tradition. The family earned a Royal Warrant from Queen Victoria and now Beken of Cowes holds a Royal Warrant as marine photographer to the Duke of Edinburgh.

Jamie Thom AWARD-WINNING photographer and safari guide Jamie Thom started his professional life as a mechanical engineer before turning to his passions for wildlife and photography. He took a post as a game ranger in the MalaMala Game reserve in South Africa where,

armed with his camera, he was able to 'shoot' wildlife on a daily basis. His work was recognised by a string of awards, which culminated in him being named Wildlife Photographer of the Year. He is now a full-time professional photographer and runs safaris.

Carleton Watkins CARLETON WATKINS found international fame for his award-winning photographs of Yosemite, San Francisco, the Pacific coast and subjects throughout the western states of the US. He was born in New York in 1829 and in 1851 he joined the California gold rush. He didn't find gold but did meet

Robert Vance who taught him his photographic skills. By 1858 he was working on his own, taking on a number of commissions, and in 1861 he travelled to Yosemite to take pictures which would help establish his name. This series of vintage pictures are from prints held in the Royal Geographical Societyâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Archive in London.

James Wheeler Landscapes Painting in oil on cork allows James Wheeler to achieve subtle textures and although contemporary, his pieces have a timeless quality allowing for viewer interpretation evoked by his use of light and atmosphere of the landscape. He wants people to view his work and have it stir an emotion or memory. James Wheeler was born in Glasgow, Scotland, in 1944. He attended the Glasgow School of Art and became one of the UK’s leading carpet designers. His inspiration is drawn from visits to his homeland, Scotland, and from holidays spent in France, Venice and the Mediterranean islands. Closer to home his love of the Lake District and magnificent Yorkshire moors also inspires him. James is a member of the Fine Arts Trade Guild, has had many successful exhibitions in England and has been regional winner of the Laing Art Exhibition, exhibited at the Leeds Open Art Exhibition and the Leicestershire Art for Schools and Colleges Exhibition. TROWBRIDGE | Poppy Waddilove

Poppy Waddilove Poppy works mostly with oils, acrylics and a smudge of charcoal, though she always feels most comfortable with her trusty graphite pencil, says Charlee Harris. London-based artist Poppy, creates graceful and stylish fashion illustrations. In her pieces she aims to create a timeless elegance in the woman that she portrays, which she does so beautifully in her exquisite Ballerina collection and her other Fashion led drawings. The inspiration for her work comes from 40's, 50's fashion and portraiture photography. She says of her works: "I am drawn to the spontaneity of a moment, whether it be a reflective, thoughtful moment or a sudden graceful movement." From a young age Poppy drew the people she observed and doodled fashion sketches from them. Her love for drawing compelled her to complete a foundation art and design course at Central Saint Martins followed by an Illustration degree at London College of Fashion. Poppyâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s work is now expanding with her recent colour experiments.

odwin Hoffmann was born in Büchenbeuren, Germany, in 1945. From 1973 until his death in July 2013, he lived and worked in the Alsace region of France.

Hoffmann’s painted work contains large chromatic stripes, often coloured and often vertical, all relying on the impact of colour to help translate their volume within an open environment. His conceptual design and minimalist attitude offer a modern take on well-composed abstract art.

'From the moment I held the box of colours in my hands, I knew this was my life. I threw myself into it like a beast that plunges towards the thing it loves,' he said. In his final years Matisse became wheelchair bound and in 1941, with the aid of assistants, he set about creating highly original work using brightly coloured cut-out paper shapes arranged in abstract patterns. These cut paper collages, often on a large scale, were called gouaches découpés. His Blue Nudes series features prime examples of this technique he called 'painting with scissors'; they demonstrate the ability to bring his eye for colour and geometry to a new medium of utter simplicity, but with playful and delightful power. 'Instead of drawing an outline and filling in the colour I am drawing directly in colour,' he said. The first lithographic plates of this work were executed under Matisse's own direction in 1954.The succeeding work was completed under the meticulous supervision of his friend and publisher, Teriade. The lithographic plates, in fifteen to twenty impressions of colour, were printed by Mourlot Frères, of Paris, and the monochrome heliogravure plates were printed by the master printer Draeger Freres. Our 1954 Vintage Prints are Signed in Plate and a Certificate of Authenticity accompanies each one. These images are prints published in 1954. They should be not confused with modern posters.

Aviva Stanoff DESIGNER AVIVA Stanoff has collaborated with Martin Trowbridge to produce a series of unique framed textiles. Each textile is handdyed, etched and painted one at a time. No two are alike and each celebrates the botanicals that inspired them.

Aviva began her career in textile design focusing on fashion runway work for close to six years before she launched her current collection of home textiles. Her clients included top fashion houses in New York, London and Paris. Aviva's work is known for her combination of sophistication and subtlety. Each one-of-a-kind concept is hand-crafted with attention to design and detail as traditional embellishments meet cutting-edge textile treatments exclusive to her design studio. Most days you can find Aviva in her waterfront loft where she has a design studio in Brooklyn or in the flower markets of the city. Designs and compostions will vary with each batch of textiles that Aviva produces.

Lyndi Sales ANYONE WHO has admired the delicate intricacy of her work, will understand why South African Lyndi Sales is TROWBRIDGE's best-selling artist. She's renowned world-wide for her thought-provoking multidimensional works in paper and her installations featuring birds and animals. For her collaboration with TROWBRIDGE, however, Lyndi has drawn inspiration from a long-held fascination with early 17th century botanical engravings, works that she first encountered when studying for her Master's degree at the University of Cape Town.

"I found so much beauty in the engravings of those early 17th century botanical artists pioneers such as Basilius Besler, who nurtured, catalogued and painted new species of plants in such meticulous detail. I really appreciated the way in which the works are able to be both complex and simply descriptive at one and the same time."

When it came to creating her own engravings in a style that paid homage to those earlier artists, Lyndi felt that the paper she used should be just as key as the images themselves. "Continuing the natural, antique theme, I decided to use hand-made paper. "I'm fortunate in that I am able to source this from a paper mill just a few miles from my studio. It's made from reeds from the Black River and has a wonderful subtle colour and texture." The etchings are produced with a sharp etching needle onto copper-plate; the more detailed the image, the longer it will take to produce - the tree images Lyndi produces for TROWBRIDGE, for instance, are particularly labour-intensive. A number of resists, including wax and a ground substance called rosin, can be applied to mask areas of the plate before it is submerged in an acid bath.

The completed plate is then heated, ink is applied and wiped away so that it's left only in the grooves of the etching. The dampened paper is then applied to the plate and the image is pressed through an old style etching press. Finally, Lyndi hand-colours and signs each image.

"The printing process itself is meditative, almost mesmeric. But what I really love is the actual engraving - searching through ancient images for inspiration, doing my research into the plants I am depicting and choosing the final colours for each work," she says.

Although Lyndi's are modern pieces, their look and feel is very much that of a period piece. So what does she feel she brings from the 21st century to her decidedly antique looking work? "Accessibility," she says. "Not only are 17th century originals today priceless, when they first appeared they were groundbreaking, only produced in very small numbers and extremely costly. "I, on the other hand, am able to produce and distribute my work far more quickly and easily. And, of course, because the works depict the natural world, they're timeless."

Meridith Martens FROM HER first art commission in high school, Meridith Martens has had a lifelong passion for putting the world around her on canvas and paper. She is equally comfortable with realism and abstract and the infinite range of expression between them. Meridith Martens was born in Illinois, and her Navy family eventually settled in Annapolis where she combined her love of horses with her artistic talent and a gifted painter of horses emerged. She attended the New School in New York, the Corcoran in Washington and studied under Volang in Paris. As she grew, her work evolved and portraits and abstracts shared her passion. Meridith's painting of the World Trade Center, created just days after September 11, travelled the world for two years with the True Colors exhibit, an artists' response to the tragic events of that day. She now lives in North Carolina and continues to enhance her portfolio with a blend of animal portraits, expressive abstracts and corporate commissions. She has recently completed illustrating a children's Christmas book and is working on commissioned paintings.

Basilius Besler THE MOST celebrated florilegium ever published - the Hortus Eystettensis - is the record of the gardens of the Prince Bishop of Eichstatt. The gardens were completed by Basilius Besler: a pharmacist renowned for his own, smaller garden in Nuremburg. One of the earliest records of flowers from a specific documented garden, the work is exceptional in every sense, from the variety and range of flowers - over 1, 000 wild and cultivated species from Europe, Africa and the New World - to the quality of the 366 copperplate engravings. The gardens, along with most of the town of Eichstatt, were destroyed by the invading Swedish troops led by Herzog von Weimer in 1633 during the Thirty Years War.

Giuseppe Castiglioni THE PERIOD of Emperor Qianlong was the most prosperous time in the Qing Dynasty of Chinese history. Chinese art was at its peak and Italian Giuseppe Castiglioni was among the most renowned artists in the land. The Imperial Court of Emperor Qianlong was a long way from Milan's San Macellino district where Giuseppe was born in 1688. This was where he studied painting

with Carlo Cornara of the renowned Botteghe Degli Stampator studio. His life took a dramatic turn when in 1709 he became a Jesuit and six years later was sent to China by the Catholic Church as a missionary. It was here that he was to find fame - not for his missionary work - but for his artistic skills. So admired was he that he remained in China for 51 years serving three Emperors. His style was a unique blend of European painting

with Chinese subjects and themes. Giuseppe is best known for his work on an awe-inspiring project to create an Imperial City of Summer Palaces and Gardens whose beauty not only rivalled that of the Forbidden City - but which was ten times bigger. This collection of 12 plates of the Gardens from TROWBRIDGE are re-issues from the work completed by Giuseppe in 1763. They date from the turn of the 20th century and were, incredibly, found in a Parisian

basement, after which the collection was purchased by Martin Trowbridge. It is thought they are all that remain from a published edition which was given as a present by French embassies throughout the world to visiting dignitaries. There are only three recorded copies of the original edition in the world; one in Harvard, one in the Bibliotheque Natinonale, Paris, and one in private hands.

Ando Hiroshige ANDO HIROSHIGE is regarded as one of Japan's finest artists. He began his career in the early 19th century by producing intricate wood block prints of women, then moved on to concentrate on flower and bird images and the Japanese landscapes on which his reputation is founded.
