Safety The Trout River Trailer is not “just a trailer”, it is also a powerful machine with various mechanisms that could be potentially dangerous, the following are some general safety rules pertaining to trout river trailers: • • • • • •
• •
Never enter trailer with conveyor in operation When conveyor is running be sure to keep all body parts, clothing, etc. clear of inspection doors, conveyor belt, or any other moving parts; failure to do so could result in serious injury Be aware of the tailgate position, and stand clear when opening or closing When trailer is unloading be sure to stand clear of the rear of the trailer, as to not get injured from the load being ejected from the tub Ladder is designed for a maximum of 250 pounds; do not exceed this limit. Top ladder rung is only there as a “hand-hold”; do not use as a step Trailer hydraulic system is designed to run in access of 2500 psi, this amount of pressure could be very dangerous; always take care when connecting hydraulic lines, that it is done properly, and replace any damaged hydraulic components immediately. Always be sure system pressure is relieved before maintenance o Always connect return line first, and disconnect last Air system can also be dangerous, be aware of air lines, that they are not damaged, and relieve system pressure before maintenance When working on the trailer, be sure all power systems are disconnected, unless otherwise instructed or needed, always be aware of present dangers

Note: Tools or supplies in red are only required when front, and back shafts are not installed
Tools or supplies needed • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • •
Hydraulic powerpack or truck with wetline Rope at least double length of trailer plus 20 feet Something to pull chain into trailer (forklift, truck, etc.) Welder Puller on chain to attach rope (picture on page 4) Chain binds 1 extra chain link for punching others out Wheel chocks 2 prybars (at least 3 feet long) Flashlight 1 ½” wrench or socket for adjuster bolts 1 1/8” wrench or socket for adjuster plate lock bolts Anti seize Ball peen hammer Drill and drill bit 5/16” Sledge hammer 1 5/16” wrench or socket for bearing mount bolts 3/16” hex key Loctite Special socket for bearing collar nut (picture on page 11) Torque wrench capable of 225 ft/lbs Punch (approx. 1/2'” diameter by 10” long)

Step 1: Situate chain properly at the rear of the trailer • •
When placing the chain, it is important to have it facing the right way Chain is pulled in through the bottom so it must be upside down (pucks facing up) when entering the trailer
Pucks facing up (For reference only, do not lift up chain in this step)

Step 2: Attach pulling device • •
If rope is hooked to crossbar it may bend We use a piece of 2” channel drilled to fit as a crossbar does o An old crossbar will also work fine, but it may get bent in this process
Pulling device
37 ¼”

Step 3: Route rope •
Route the rope in the path you want the conveyor to go (start at rear and run to front, around front shaft and back on the opposite side if the floor o Attach bottom rope to conveyor pulling attachment o Attach top rope to puller (Forklift, truck, etc.) o Rope must be at least double the trailer plus the distance to the machine you are using to pull

Step 4: Prep front of trailer • • •
This manual assumes you have adjusters, front sprockets, and front shaft installed Be sure adjusters are backed off all the way Be sure front sprockets are lined up to chain rail
Sprocket is lined up with chain rail
Front adjuster

Step 5: Lift chain into trailer •
Chain must be manually lifted into trailer, past bogey clamp bolts to avoid catching o This is easier if you take some tension with the forklift, but must be done very carefully to avoid injury
Bogey clamp bolts

Step 6: Pull chain into trailer (need wheel chocks) • • • •
Note: it is possible to do this with the back shaft installed
Use 2 large prybars, set on rear crossmember and hold out level o Chain will catch on bottom plate of frame if prybars aren’t there Pull slowly and be sure it doesn’t catch anywhere Watch front sprockets and be sure chain engages, and starts running on the chain rails Pull as far as the end of the junior I beams, any farther and it will make it very hard to install back shaft (If you go too far, you should be able to pull back by hand) o if back shaft is already installed, pull right onto back shaft, and skip Steps 7 &8

Step 7: Install back shaft •
•
Slide back shaft onto gearbox spline o It is a good idea to coat spline in an anti seize compound before installation o There will be resistance as soon as spline engages, try to keep shaft true with spline as it slides on Once on, line up sprockets to chain rail
P a g e | 11
Step 8: Install rear bearing •
• •
At the end of this step, the back shaft will be fixed in place, take a measurement to be sure shaft doesn’t move from start to finish. o It is important that the sprockets stay lined up to chain rails Slide on bearing collar with threads facing outward Once collar is on, slide bearing over collar

Step 8: (cont.) •
• • •
Install and snug both bearing bolts o Once bolts are snug take measurements to get shaft true with spline o With bolts snugged it is possible to pry shaft up or down slightly Once shaft is adjusted properly, bearing can be tightened down Next tap collar from back until it bottoms against the bearing o This should keep the shaft from pulling during the tightening of the collar Tighten down collar to 225 ft/lbs. Check measurement before and after to make sure shaft didn’t move o Bend tab of lock ring into collar nut, to ensure it don’t loosen during use
Punching collar to bearing
Torque to 225 ft/lbs

Step 9: Prep for connector links •
• •
Pull chain onto back shaft o Once engaged on the back shaft, use hydraulic power to haul the chain separation just below the back shaft Use chain binds to pull bottom end of chain close enough to install connector links Hook one end of chain binds to rear crossmember o Hook other end of chain binds on the second crossbar from the end so you have some play when installing links.

Step 10: Install connector links • •
•
Connector links must first be installed backwards as they don’t fit the proper way when at the rear of the trailer Once installed backwards, use hydraulic power to move connection to the inspection doors o Use another connector link and hammer to punch out backwards link o Once it is punched out, install the cap and cotter pins on the link you punched in Do this to both sides of the trailer Backwards link
Punch connector link toward inside of trailer
Cap and cotter pins installed

Step 11: Install last crossbar •
Install crossbar into connector links
P a g e | 16
Step 12: Tension chain •
•
Turn adjuster bolts until chain reaches a proper tension o Use a prybar through the inspection door, and pry on the bottom half of the chain o If the chain links pivot visibly, chain needs more tension o If chain all moves up and down as one unit visibly, then it is at the proper tension Lock down adjusters
No visual pivot, chain is at proper tension
P a g e | 17
Step 13: Final check • •
Let chain run for a couple of complete rotations Crawl under trailer and look at chain running on chain rail, be sure chain is centred on the chain rail (not more of a gap on one side than the other) o If it is, loosen set screws on front bearings and move front shaft in a way that centers chain o Once centered re drill, and install set screws and Loctite in place
Conveyor install is complete
