We believe that lasting personal and social change can only come about when we all work together to invest in our kids, our health and our neighbors. That’s why, at the Y, building a healthy community is our cause. Every day, we work side by side with our neighbors in our community to make sure that everyone, regardless of age, income or background, has the opportunity to learn, grow and thrive.

Through the donations of the thousands of people who believe as we do, financial assistance keeps the Y available for kids and families who need us most. These gifts to the Y have a meaningful, enduring impact right in your own neighborhood. Join us in thanking those donors, who we list at this time each year, beginning on page 7.

FOR YOUTH DEVELOPMENT Because we believe that all kids deserve the opportunity to discover who they are and what they can achieve, the Y is for youth development. Of the pages of stories sent this way to illustrate the power of the Y through financial assistance, the story of Ryan Woods’ – smiling on the cover -- summer experience at our YMCA Hargis Retreat was one of the most uplifting. Read what his mother had to say, and her thanks, on page 30.

FOR HEALTHY LIVING Improving the nation’s health and well-being is a priority for the Y. At the Y, we help children and adults understand and value their health, and we nurture their well-being. From the Vestavia YMCA, this mother told us: “I had hit rock bottom! In the span of six months I went from being married with a job; having three wonderful children and a home with a great family environment to being a physically and mentally battered divorcee without a home. I lost my job and my life…and didn’t know where to turn. Through my mother’s love and the YMCA, I am trying to rebuild my life and keep a family existence for my three daughters. Because of financial assistance I received from the YMCA, my daughters and I can exercise at the Vestavia Y, a safe haven. One daughter is now on the swim team, and I can keep physically and mentally healthy because I have entrance to a home away from home.

Thanks to the YMCA’s love, I can now see the light at the end of the tunnel.”

FOR SOCIAL RESPONSIBILITY At the Y, strengthening community is our cause. Community building is illustrated well at two YMCAs that serve urban families. At the Western Area YMCA, anchored between the Birmingham communities of Midfield and Five Points West, we know that our young people deserve a place where they can be encouraged to live beyond the limits of their surroundings. The Y helps young people discover the essential values to build self-respect and responsibility as well as social responsibility through enrichment and life skills programming.

Dreams flourish at the YMCA Youth Center downtown in the Park Place development. Mentoring programs show our future leaders that no dream is too big in a safe, fun, and structured environment that is led by role models and mentors.

Bike Rodeo Teaches Kids To Be Safe On Two Wheels On Saturday, September 7, the Mountain Brook YMCA had a rodeo - not that kind of rodeo, mind you. There was no bull or bronco riding, just two-wheeled contraptions at the inaugural Mountain Brook YMCA bicycle rodeo.

A partnership with Safe Routes to School of Central Alabama, school-aged children from throughout Birmingham had the opportunity to practice and develop skills that will help them become better cyclists and avoid crashes.

“Kids learned how to ride safely, stay in control, and about the importance of wearing a helmet,” said Emily Frandsen, Member Engagement Director of the Mountain Brook YMCA. “I would like to thank all of the volunteers who helped to direct kids through the stations, hand out prizes, fit kids with bikes and helmets, sign in participants, bandage skinned knees, and cheer kids through the stations. It was a wonderful day and we hope to provide this valuable program again next year.”

Volunteers from the following local sponsors: Regional Planning Commission of Greater Birmingham, Conservation Alabama, Children’s of Alabama, Cahaba Cycles, Kohl’s Cares, and Kohl’s Think First Alabama, were on hand to help children learn how to safely wear a bike helmet, properly fit bicycles, and lead children through a course designed to help them navigate the types of obstacles they may encounter riding in their neighborhoods.

stressful time A lot of people don’t realize we are a charitable organization whose goal is to “never turn anyone away due to an inability to pay”. If you are going through a financial crisis, it’s important to stay healthy and to keep your family on its usual schedule. Thanks to donations to our annual “Campaign for a Healthy Community”—we thank this year’s donors, beginning on the next page—the Y can help. Contact the membership director at the branch nearest you.

You might be surprised to see who we assist From families going through medical emergencies and people on fixed incomes, to people who have been laid off or are taking a leave of absence, the Y has seen most every imaginable situation. We base scholarship awards on household size and income so even though you think you might not qualify or are afraid to take dollars from someone you think might need it more than you do, don’t hesitate to drop by a branch for a financial assistance application or log onto ymcabham.org to download a copy at home.

3. We provide scholarships for both

membership and programs When you apply for financial assistance at the YMCA of Greater Birmingham, you may be eligible for help with membership, programs like childcare or swim lessons, or both. The membership director at your branch can talk with you about your eligibility and what percentage scholarship you may qualify for. All your information will be safe and all communication is confidential.

RYAN FINDS SUMMER FUN AT YMCA HARGIS RETREAT My family’s experience with the YMCA Hargis Retreat this summer was amazing! As a single mother trying to support my son, Ryan, I was concerned about how he would spend his summer. I've never liked the idea of my son having to stay with strangers at a day care facility; not to mention that it would be very difficult for me to afford this kind of care.

I asked other mothers at Ryan’s school where they would recommend he go.

They told us about Hargis; we knew right away it sounded perfect for him. After some research we even discovered they offered financial aid.

I couldn't believe my luck. Although I was still a little concerned about leaving Ryan all day with people I really didn't know, my mother and I went to the camp and talked to the staff and signed Ryan up. Everyone we met was so very helpful and nice. I left that day feeling completely at ease and feeling like a burden had been taken off my shoulders.

The financial aid I was able to receive was such a blessing; I really don't know what I would have done without the help of the YMCA this summer! Ryan was able to have such an amazing summer; he made so many friends and all the counselors were so great with him. He talks about them constantly; it was always like they were more like his best friends rather than his counselors. It made me feel so relieved to know he had met such amazing role models he would probably remember for the rest of his life.

Ryan's favorite experience—and I know it was his favorite because we heard about it for weeks—was when he caught his first fish ALL

BY HIMSELF! It was only a little brim but because it was such a big moment for him, it made his self-confidence skyrocket! He also really enjoyed learning archery. He came home so excited the first time he actually hit the target.

Another thing I found very unique and comforting was that YMCA Hargis is a Christian-based organization. I was very impressed with how much Ryan learned during chapel. He told us about the lessons he learned and the songs he sang.

Hargis was a real blessing for our family this summer; we are looking forward to Ryan being able to attend again next year.

Water Safety Program Comes to Northeast, Western Area Branches The summer is for swimming and the YMCA of Greater Birmingham believes everyone should be able to have fun and be safe in the water.

To help further that mission, we launched an innovative summer program: “Learn To Swim”. More than just swim lessons, Learn To Swim is a comprehensive water safety program designed to help children who live in Birmingham’s urban communities valuable, lifesaving water safety skills.

Taught at the Northeast and Western Area Ys, Learn to Swim was conceived by the association’s Junior Board. The board was formed three years ago as a way to get young professionals involved in volunteering and social leadership on behalf of the YMCA. Water safety became its mission last year. The board raised funds to help launch the program to serve children from communities where swimming has not traditionally been a priority, and where access to swimming instruction is scarce. “As the Junior Board began to talk about the initiative, we just focused in and said this is something we want to support,” said Kelli Solomon, a founding member of the Junior Board.

You Can Take Control November is National Diabetes Awareness month, not that any of us in Birmingham need to be reminded of the effects the disease is having on our community. If you’re one of the estimated 79 million Americans at risk of developing type II diabetes, what you need is encouragement and hope, not an endless parade of statistics and bad news.

To help turn back the disease and help make Birmingham the healthiest community in America, the Birmingham YMCA will host a series of screenings and information sessions led by YMCA Diabetes Prevention Coordinator, Debby LaCruz beginning in late October and throughout November.

If you are at high risk for type 2 diabetes, the YMCA’s Diabetes Prevention Program can help you adopt and maintain healthy lifestyles that will help you reduce your chances of developing diabetes. The program helps those at high risk of developing type 2 diabetes adopt and maintain healthy lifestyles by eating healthier, increasing physical activity and losing a modest amount of weight in order to reduce their chances of developing the disease. Based on research funded by the National Institutes of Health and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the program reduces the risk of developing type 2 diabetes by 58 percent.

The Fifth Quarter

Alabaster Open Its Doors To Area Teens For over 40 years the YMCA has served youth in Alabaster in a myriad of ways. Now, with a brand new building to call home, the Alabaster Y is now helping the city and school system with a new program just for teens. Known as “Fifth Quarter”, the YMCA opened its doors from 9 p.m.- Midnight after each Thompson High School home football game to give teenagers a fun, safe way to celebrate.

The initiative was launched in time for the beginning of the 2013 football season and,

by Thompson’s second game of the year, close to 100 kids enjoyed activities such as basketball, dancing, and swimming after each home game. A handful of players even found relief relaxing sore muscles in the branch’s whirlpool after games.

“The Alabaster YMCA is pleased to be giving teens a place to be safe and have a fun place to go after games,” said Rhonda Elmore, Executive Director of the Alabaster YMCA. “The response from the city has been more than positive and we hope to continue this program next year, and, hopefully, spread it to other YMCAs throughout Birmingham in the future.”

YMCA celebrates tenth year of support to Toys for Tots Over the past nine years, because of the support of volunteers from across the greater Birmingham area, the YMCA has helped provide holiday toys to more than 40,000 children through the Marines’ Toys for Tots program. Want to be a part of our tenth year of support?

Volunteers are needed to sort, bag and distribute toys at the YMCA Youth Center, 2400 Seventh Avenue North, Saturday, December 7, and then Monday-Thursday, December 9-12 from 8 a.m. – 2 p.m. each day. This is a great opportunity for school, church, business, civic clubs, and youth service groups.

Our goal is to try to find out more of what’s going on in the community so we can be involved or cooperate with other partners and be able to say: “by the way, here’s what we do.” We’re haven’t had much of a presence in our community and we’re trying to correct that. The people that we’ve gotten on the board are some young people who are already involved in other activities and they know people.

“Our goal is to make sure that people know we’re not a gym. It’s about visibility, getting out there and letting people know who we are. When we cooperate with groups that are already trying to provide some services to the community, then we’re going to better get our name out there. We haven’t done that in the past.

“I’m excited about our prospects of fund raising. Right now, most of our money goes to scholarships. I have a board member that I dearly love that has been a recipient of scholarships, and now she gives, and gives, and gives. There are people in Vestavia that are down on their luck, and most people don’t realize it. They need a place to come, and this is a place they should be coming. But, we want to, at some point in the future, expand beyond scholarships and find a different program that we can support.”
