How Much Does It Cost?

There is a financial commitment in joining a fraternity. However, monthly dues are affordable and the experiences outweigh the costs. In most cases, dues will cover the daily operations of the chapter with the exception of formal, t-shirts, pictures, etc. There will be a few one-time charges during the first semester like the new member and initiation fees. Many of these fees are set by the (inter)national fraternity office.

what is recruitment?

Recruitment is the period when prospective members visit the fraternities and learn about their various activities and programs. Each fraternity has something unique to offer, just as you have something equally unique to offer in return.

Formal Recruitment Formal recruitment will begin two weeks into the semester so that you will have enough time to get used to your classes, navigate the campus, and strengthen your ties to the community. Recruitment will begin with the Convocation on Monday, September 10 and culminate with Bid Signing on Friday, September 14. The recruitment activities are held during the evening and will not interfere with any of your classes. Going through recruitment is absolutely FREE so we encourage you to do so even if you are unsure as to whether or not you want to join a fraternity. You must register for formal recruitment online at http://panther.bsc.edu/~ifc by Monday, September 10, 2007.

Fraternity Recruitment Schedule 2007

Giving back to the community is an integral part of membership in a fraternity. All six of the nationally recognized fraternities were founded on the ideal of service to others. Each fraternity supports a national or local philanthropy through fundraisers and service projects on a yearly basis. It is also common to see fraternity men participating in the international and national Interim Service Learning trips, tutoring at Woodrow Wilson Elementary School, or volunteering at the Downtown Men’s Firehouse Shelter.

Recruitment events are strictly enforced as alcohol-free, as mandated by BirminghamSouthern College as well as each national fraternity. The dress for formal recruitment is khakis and a collared shirt.

Monday, September 10 – Recruitment Convocation 4:30 pm – Norton Theater Men registered for formal recruitment receive schedules, are assigned to their Recruitment Advisory Groups, and hear information related to recruitment week from the IFC officers.

Tuesday, September 11 – Recruitment Round Robins 1 6:30-9:00 pm – Fraternity Row Potential New Members (PNMs) attend scheduled parties with their Recruitment Advisory Groups. Parties are twenty minutes each and groups will attend all six houses for chapter presentations.

Wednesday, September 12 – Recruitment Round Robins 2 6:30-9:30 pm – Fraternity Row PNMs will go through another set of Round Robins with the Recruitment Advisory Groups. Parties are fifteen minutes each during this round. Fraternities will begin offering formal bids at this time, but PNMs will not be able to accept bids until the Open Houses begin at 8:30. This is to ensure that each PNM has both time and privacy, in order to make the best decision for himself.

Thursday, September 13 – Preferential Dinner Night 4:00-5:00 pm – PNMs pick up invitations in the SGA Room in Norton Campus Center 6:30-9:00 pm – Fraternity Row PNMs will attend one or two preferential parties, depending on the number of invitations received and accepted.

Chapters provide food to invited PNMs and the tone of this evening is casual.

Friday, September 14 – Bid Day 6:30 pm – Bid Signing in Norton Theatre

Social Without a doubt, once you have finished studying for the day, you want to socialize and relax with your friends. By joining a fraternity, you can look forward to mixing with the six national sororities represented on campus. Each fraternity also holds different themed parties and formals throughout the year.

Why Join a Fraternity?

There are numerous benefits of joining a fraternity at BSC. However, we would like to show you a few reasons why joining a fraternity can enhance your overall experience on The Hilltop.

Scholarship The fraternities at Birmingham-Southern are well known in the Southeast for maintaining some of the highest grade point averages. Recently, the Gamma Sigma Alpha National Greek Honor Society honored the BSC fraternities for having the highest GPA over to the All Men’s Average. To assist new members with their grades, fraternities offer study halls during the fall semester, require minimum grade point averages for initiation, and encourage older brothers to mentor new members. Many fraternity men are members of such academic honor societies as Alpha Lambda Delta, Phi Eta Sigma, Omicron Delta Kappa, Phi Beta Kappa, and Order of Omega.

Brotherhood Perhaps the most rewarding aspect of joining a fraternity at BSC is the lifelong bonds that will be formed between you and your fraternity brothers. This bond begins on Bid Day and is enhanced each and every day through ritual, retreats, and daily interaction. These friendships help make Birmingham-Southern your home away from home and undoubtedly make your four years of college more complete.

Leadership Gaining the skills to become an effective leader is an important part of complimenting your classroom experiences while in college, especially if you are looking ahead to graduate school, law school, medical school, or the job market. The fraternities at BSC offer their members the opportunity to assume leadership roles within their chapter and highly encourage involvement in other activities on campus. Fraternity men are involved in all areas of campus life including Student Government, Honor Council, and Residence Life.

Recruitment Rules and Policies Rules play an important role in recruitment. The Interfraternity Council has developed these rules, giving equal consideration to all potential new members and fraternities. You will receive a complete copy of the rules when you arrive on campus, and you can access them online at http://panther.bsc.edu/~ifc/.

There are a few things you need to be familiar with during the summer and fall recruitment.

• All recruitment activities are strictly alcohol-free.

• Freshmen going through recruitment (male and female), will not be allowed at the fraternity houses until Friday, August 31, 2007 at 7:00 pm.

• No fraternity man may take a potential new member off campus after freshman move in weekend.
