TIFF – celebrating togetherness

Mye har forandret seg og det har vært et utfordrende år for oss alle siden sist vi samlet oss på Tromsø internasjonale filmfestival (TIFF), i januar 2020. 12. mars stengte Norge ned store deler av samfunnet. Mange av oss måtte tilbringe mer tid alene. Vi jobbet og levde vårt sosiale liv foran dataskjermen. Alle deltok i en nasjonal og internasjonal dugnad i forsøket på å begrense konsekvensene av Covid-19-pandemien. Da våre liv ble snudd opp ned, ble turen i den lokale dagligvarebutikken til hverdagens høydepunkt – det eneste stedet du faktisk kunne møte andre mennesker.

A lot has changed and it has been a challenging year for all of us, since the last time we gathered at Tromsø International Film Festival (TIFF) in January 2020. On the 12th of March, everything closed down in Norway. Many of us had to spend more time alone. We worked and lived our social life in front of our computers. We took part in the national and international «dugnad»*, trying to limit the consequences of the Covid-19 pandemic. Our lives were turned upside down, making grocery shopping in the local store the everyday highlight – the only place you could actually meet other people.

Kunst- og kulturliv er fortsatt pålagt store begrensinger. På årets festival har vi sannsynligvis lov til å samle 200 personer i en kinosal, med ett åpent sete mellom hver person. Mange av oss har prøvd alle slags opplevelser digitalt – konserter, film, teater, trening, yoga, quiz, dans og til og med bursdagsfester. Men vi kan vel alle være enige om at dette ikke er det samme som å være til stede på live-arrangementer.

Because of the pandemic, our creative industries have still not re-opened entirely. At this year’s festival we will probably be allowed to gather 200 people in one cinema with one free seat between each person. Many of us have tried all kinds of experiences digitally – concerts, theater, exercising, yoga, quiz, dancing, films and even birthday parties. Yet I guess we can all agree that this is not the same as being present at live events.

Forskere fra University College of London fant i en undersøkelse at alle typer kulturelle opplevelser du deler i et rom med andre mennesker bidrar til å forhindre depresjoner. Årsaken er sannsynligvis at felles erfaringer gir en følelse av interaksjon og fellesskap.

La TIFF 2021 være en feiring av samvær, delte opplevelser og fellesskap. La oss feire den magiske kinoen der verden projiseres på det store lerretet. Her kan du dele latter og tårer med både venner og fremmede, denne gang med sosial distanse og ett sete unna nestemann. Vi er sosiale vesener og vi trenger felles opplevelser og delte erfaringer for å overleve. Derfor er kunst og kultur viktig i våre liv. Det gjør oss menneskelige, fordi det hjelper oss å forstå både verden og hverandre, samtidig som det bringer oss sammen.

Researchers from the University College of London found that all kinds of cultural experiences you share in a room with other human beings help prevent depression. The reasons for that are probably that joint experiences give a feeling of interaction and togetherness.

Let TIFF 2021 be a celebration of community, fellowship and togetherness. Let us celebrate the magic of the cinema room, which allows the world to be projected on to the big screen. The place where you share your laughter and tears with strangers, although they are one seat apart. We are a community, and we need shared experiences to survive. This is why art and culture are so important in our lives.

It makes us human because it helps us understand the world and brings us together.

Kjære Tromsø internasjonale filmfestival. Vi er alle inne i en ekstraordinær tid. Norsk film- og kinobransje står i en svært tøff periode og publikum har lenge hatt begrenset tilgang til de store filmopplevelsene på kinolerretet. Mange savner å dele filmopplevelser som før. Midt i pandemien og mørketiden, står TIFF som en lysende og viktig inspirasjonskilde for oss alle.

I starten av hvert år setter den arktiske regionen et markant avtrykk i den nasjonale filmpolitikken med landets største filmfest, Tromsø internasjonale filmfestival (TIFF).

Vi skal bli inspirert og begeistret av filmene og ikke minst la oss imponere av selve arrangementet, som i år gjennomføres tross svært uforutsigbare rammevilkår. Jeg er sikker på at arrangørene, som i år skal gjennomføre en fantastisk festival for 31. gang, klarer å skape filmmagi, fellesskap og tilhørighet, innenfor trygge rammer for publikum. Vi trenger TIFF nå.

Jeg gleder meg til å få oppleve 2021-utgaven av festivalen.

Dear Tromsø International Film Festival. We are all living in extraordinary times. The Norwegian film and cinema industry is going through a very tough period, and the public has had limited access to the great film experiences on the cinema screen. Many people miss sharing the cinema experience as we used to enjoy it. In the midst of the pandemic and the polar night, TIFF stands as a luminous and important source of inspiration for all of us.

We will be inspired and excited by the films, and we will be impressed by the event itself, which is carried out this year despite very unpredictable conditions. I am sure that the organizers, who this year will hold a fantastic festival for the 31st time, will manage to create film magic, community and belonging, within a safe framework for the audience. We need TIFF now.

I look forward to experiencing the 2021 edition of the festival.

TIFF er en unik møteplass for nasjonal og internasjonal filmbransje, hvor kvalitetsfilm og filmpolitikk er i fokus. TIFF er også en viktig brikke i landsdelens satsing på film, gjennom å åpne verden for nord, og nord for verden. Festivalen er et fyrtårn i det arktiske landskapet og i Barentsregionen, noe som er til stor inspirasjon for oss i regionen. I nord tenker vi like mye øst-vest, som nord-sør — fordi vi er i hjertet av Arktis.

Jeg vil berømme TIFF for pågangsmot og vilje til å finne gode og trygge løsninger slik at publikum også i år kan se kvalitetsfilm fra hele verden. Jeg ønsker også å trekke fram det viktige arbeidet festivalens frivillige gjør. Sammen med den faste staben er de med på å gjøre filmopplevelsen spesiell for oss som publikum.

Jeg ønsker alle noen strålende arktiske filmdøgn, i kinosalen eller digitalt!

At the beginning of each year, the Arctic region makes an impact on national film policy with the country’s largest film festival, Tromsø International Film Festival (TIFF).

TIFF is a unique meeting place for the national and international film industry, where quality films and film industry policies are in focus. TIFF also plays an important role in the region’s commitment to cinema, by opening the world to the North, and the North to the world. The festival is a lighthouse in the Arctic landscape and in the Barents region, which is a great inspiration for us in the region. In the North, we think as much east-west as we do north-south - because we are in the heart of the Arctic.

I would like to praise TIFF for its courage and willingness to find good and safe solutions so that the public can watch quality films from all over the world this year. I also want to highlight the important work the festival’s volunteers do. Together with the permanent staff, they help creating a special film experience for us as an audience.

I wish everyone many brilliant Arctic movie nights, in the cinema or digitally!

Hva TIFF er for meg

… for folk i generasjoner. Bilder som beveger seg over lerretet lukter ikke, smaker ikke. Like fullt blir vi sultne, nysgjerrige, glade, sorgfylte, opplyste, sinte, overrasket.

Kjære TIFF-ere! 2020, et år vi ikke kommer til å glemme med det første. Eller et år vi må glemme raskt, vil kanskje noen si. Covid-19-pandemiens herjinger har preget hele verden, også Tromsø. Det har vært et «annerledes år», og vi har ikke fått levd livene våre slik vi pleier. Vi har måttet gjøre store endringer.

Tromsø internasjonale filmfestival i koronaens tid blir utenom det vanlige. Vi blir ikke så mange som vi har vært vant til.

Vi kommer ikke til å stå i rushticketkø, og vi skal sitte med avstand til hverandre. Vi vil se filmer digitalt, for første gang i TIFFs historie. Og vi vil være litt sammen.

Mer enn noen gang trenger vi å bli minnet på at tiden for fellesskap ikke for alltid er forbi. For den kommer tilbake, når vi kan danse tett på Verdensteateret eller bli kjent med en fremmed framfor å gå på kino, fordi stemningen på Amtmandens var akkurat det vi trengte, akkurat nå.

What TIFF means to me

Men noen ting endrer vi aldri! I Tromsø har vi noe å se fram til.

Noe som alltid består. TIFF er et av de største høydepunktene i Tromsø, og har i over 30 år fylt Tromsø-vinteren med folk og filmglede. Vi går på TIFF for å le, for å gråte, for å snakke og for å gjøre verden ørlite grann bedre for hver film.

Det er noe av det TIFF er for meg. Folk som møtes for å dele sine historier og ikke minst for å sammen skape nye historier i vår arktiske hovedstad.

Kjære venner av TIFF, dere som har sett mange eller få filmer, eller som er her for første gang: Velkommen! Kos dere og hold avstand.

Moving pictures have had the greatest importance for people, through generations. They do not smell. Nor taste.

Nevertheless, we get hungry, curious, happy, sad, enlightened, surprised.

Dear TIFF’ers. 2020, a year we won’t forget. Or a year to forget some might say. The Covid-19 pandemic has affected all our lives this year. We haven’t been able to live our lives the way we are used to. We have had to make changes.

Tromsø International Film Festival, in the time of Corona, will be different. Of course. We won’t be as many as we’re used to.

We won’t stand in tight lines in order to get rush tickets. We will reserve seats, and sit further away from the next person.

We will be watching films digitally for the first time in TIFF’s history. But we will be together.

But some things should never change! Every January for 30 years we have invited the world to Tromsø and to TIFF. To laugh, to cry, to talk and to make the world a little bit better with every film.

The time will return, when we can dance in a crowd at Verdensteateret, or get to know a stranger, just because life came by, you gave away your ticket, because all you needed was that mood in the room at Amtmandens.

Dear friends of TIFF: Welcome! Enjoy and stay safe.

This is what TIFF is about for me. People coming together to share stories, engage in multiple topics and to enjoy our Arctic Capital in great company.

FICC – THE DON QUIXOTE PRIZE

THE NORWEGIAN PEACE FILM AWARD

An exclusive selection 10 films are nominated for the Aurora Prize at Tromsø International Film Festival. The films must have their Norwegian premiere at TIFF to be eligible. The intention of the award is to broaden the appreciation of artistically challenging films.

Founded at the Cannes Film Festival in 1947, FICC/IFFS is an international umbrella organization for film societies and nonprofit cinemas. One of its aims is to promote outstanding films for a broader audience.

As a part of its work, FICC awards the Don Quixote Prize at selected film festivals, such as Cottbus, Karlovy Vary, and Locarno. Tromsø International Film Festival hosted FICC for the first time in 2000.

The Norwegian Peace Film Award (NoPFA) is awarded to a film that spotlights direct, structural or cultural violence, and in a creative way contributes to a deeper understanding of conflicts and violence.

The award is presented on a yearly basis by the NoPFA foundation in collaboration with the Centre for Peace Studies (CPS) at the University of Tromsø, Tromsø International Film Festival, and the Department of Culture and Literature (IKL).

The Faith In Film Award was given for the first time in 2017. It was established by KULT - Center for Art, Culture and Church, Norwegian Church Academies and Tromsø Church Academy in collaboration with the Tromsø International Film Festival.

Ninjababy Astronaut, skogvokter, tegneserieskaper. Rakel har helt andre planer enn å bli mor. Hun vil feste, drikke, ruse seg, ikke sitte timesvis på do eller drikke litervis med tropisk nektar. Men å overse en baby er vanskelig, uansett om hun har den på tegneblokka eller bærer den inni magen. Hva er egentlig den beste avgjørelsen her? Og er det Rakel eller babyen som er viktigst?

Rakel spilles av Kristine Thorp, som etter strålende innsats i flere kortfilmer gjør sin første hovedrolle i en spillefilm. Omgitt av et lite, men velspillende ensemble bærer Thorp Rakels bekymringer og stahet med bravur. Yngvild Sve Flikkes nye film er en komedie med brodd, der livets store utfordringer sitter side om side med trivielle spørsmål og voksenlivets nådeløse realiteter. Ninjababy er løst basert på Inga Sætres brageprisvinnende tegneserieroman ”Fallteknikk” fra 2011, og filmen krydres av Sætres unike illustrasjoner på en forfriskende og morsom måte.

Astronaut, forest ranger, comic book artist. Rakel has plenty of plans, none of which include motherhood. She wants to party, get high, drink beer, not spend hours on the toilet or gulping down one carton of tropical juice after the other. But ignoring a baby is hard, whether it’s a drawing of her own creation or the actual baby inside of her. What’s the right choice in a situation like this? Can she prioritize herself over a baby?

Rakel is played by Kristine Thorp, in her first lead role in a feature film after proving her talent in several short films. Surrounded by a small but excellent ensemble of actors, Thorp portrays Rakel’s stubbornness and insecurities with refreshing candor. Yngvild Sve Flikke’s sophomore feature is a sharp comedy, contrasting the trivial questions of adolescence with the ruthless realities of adulthood.

Loosely based on the award-winning comic book ”Fallteknikk” by Inga Sætre, Ninjababy brings her drawings to the big screen in a unique and humorous way.

Supernova Tusker er en intellektuell forfatter, men klarer aldri å motstå en vittig vits, og han har en lidenskap for astronomi. Sam er pianist, som til tross for at han av og til er gretten, viser urokkelig ømhet og hengivenhet overfor sine nærmeste. Sammen er de et kjærlig par som legger ut på tur i en gammel bobil ut i det engelske landskapet.

But soon enough, it appears that Tusker’s dementia is progressing, and the two men will have to reckon with their views on severe illness, love and death.

Luisa bytter ut jusstudiene med voldelige protester og sabotasjeoppdrag, noe som styrker både meningene hennes og relasjonene til de andre Antifa-medlemmene. Selv om hun er sterk i troen, begynner hun å tvile på om alt de gjør er riktig.

Luisa switches her law studies for violent protests and sabotage missions, strengthening both her political views and her bonds to fellow Antifa members. While her beliefs are strong, she can’t help but question whether all of their actions are good. While her initial introduction to the group was made through her friend Batte, Luisa soon finds herself drawn to more prominent members Lenor and Alfa. Their more aggressive approach to protesting excites her, while at the same time forcing her to face her entitled upbringing.

Sharad Nerulkar is a young man who spends his days training to become an Indian classical music vocalist. Living with his grandmother in Mumbai, he splits his time between a demanding musical training and a low-paid day job. Sharad’s solitude and existential issues are manifested on the screen as he assiduously obeys the rules and discipline of his masters, which at times hints to submissive and exploitative relationships. Technology and music slowly evolve together, and Sharad’s idolatry for the old traditions is put to the test.

And Tomorrow the Entire World is the German candidate for the Best International Film category at the Academy Awards, and the fifth film by director Julia von Heinz. She was herself a member of Antifa in her youth, and much of the plot is based on her own experiences in the ‘90s. The aggressive tone of the film is contrasted by warm light, which highlights the action of their rebellion more than softening it.

Between strong mystical and spiritual layers and a deeply human quest for success, The Disciple unfolds through three phases of Sharad’s life – his childhood, youth, and adult life.

As time passes, the stigma of failure makes him wonder if artistic excellence is actually possible. The Disciple combines traditional Indian music, beautiful cinematography and Eastern philosophy to become an almost meditative and spiritual experience in itself.

Clara flytter fra utkanten av São Paulo til Brasilia sammen med moren, en nyvalgt kongresskvinne. Her studerer hun på en religiøs skole, men frykter for morens sikkerhet. Hun utvikler et system for å kontrollere følelsene sine: repetitiv måling av vekt, løping til utmattelse og visualisering av en blå prikk for å unngå å spise. Claras historie fortelles i et ikke-lineært, noen ganger tredjepersonsperspektiv, som om hun ser kroppen sin utenfra. Hennes personlige kamp med lyst og glede smelter sakte sammen med hennes oppfatning av stedene rundt henne.

Nikola er en tobarnsfar som jobber i en liten serbisk landsby.

Når kona hans mister fabrikkjobben sin uten å få noen form for kompensasjon, forsøker hun å ta livet sitt ved å sette fyr på seg selv. Nikola møter motstand i en byråkratisk og tunggrodd barnevernstjeneste, som nekter ham å se barna sine.

Han tvinges ut på en 300 km lang gåtur, for å levere anken sin i Beograd. Dette blir starten på en lang og utmattende kamp for å gjenvinne vergemålet over barna sine. Lange og tause bilder av Nikolas reise viser hans utholdende personlighet i møte med utfordringer som fattigdom og korrupsjon i Serbia.

Clara narrates her story in a non-linear, sometimes third-person perspective, as if seeing her body from the outside. Her personal struggles with desire and pleasure slowly merge with her perceptions of the places surrounding her.

The extreme functionalism of Brasilia’s architecture and its strict empty spaces are a metaphor for Clara’s body, while she sees herself as an inhabitable space where nothing comes in or goes out. Combining personal and public archives, Moara Passoni blurs the borders between fiction and documentary. Set in the nineties, a period of turbulent protests and political instability after the Brazilian dictatorship, Ecstasy is a sensitive portrait of a young woman’s strategies to cope with insecurities, fear and loneliness.

Nikola is a father of two who has a day-job in a small Serbian village. After being dismissed from a factory, and not having received any compensation, his wife attempts suicide by setting herself on fire. Confronted with a heavily bureaucratic social service that prohibits him from seeing his children, his only option is to walk 300 kilometers to Belgrade in order to deliver an appeal, initiating a long and dolorous battle to regain custody of his kids. Long and silent shots of Nikola’s journey affirm his relentless character amidst broader problems of poverty and corruption in Serbia.

The film passes through Serbian landscapes, and Nikola is surrounded by a view of abandonment and precariousness, even though good people eventually come across his way.

Directed with pronounced realism, Father evolves with a dry and unsentimental style, presenting Nikola’s story as the one of a pilgrim or an ordinary hero who refuses to give up. Goran Bogdan, known for his work in the TV series Fargo, delivers another strong performance.

I denne vindskeive komedien fra et blekt og kaldt Skottland følger vi livet til den syriske immigranten Omar og en gjeng med asylanter. Dagene tilbringes med å vente, vente og atter vente på å få godkjent asylsøknaden i Storbritannia. På en tørrvittig måte beskrives innføringsklassene de pliktoppfyllende følger i britisk språk og kultur. Alle er enslige unge menn, og ingen har lov til å arbeide mens de venter. Dette fører til at de lever på et minimum på alle mulige måter. Settingen er både tåkete og forblåst, og man får aldri en ordentlig oversikt over verken landskapet eller situasjonen. Scenene er spartanske, men samtidig stilige og merkelige – akkurat som i en Kaurismäki-film.

Omar er musiker, men kan ikke spille på grunn av et brukket håndledd. Samtidig kan det virke som om det egentlig er mentale sperrer som hindrer ham i å fremføre musikken. I stedet for å spille bærer han med seg sin oud i en boks, noe hans venn omtaler som «en kiste for hans sjel». Dette er en hjertevarm film om vennskap som utvikler seg i et merkelig univers, og om mennesker som er fanget i limbo – alt fortalt gjennom regissør Ben Sharrocks vakre filmspråk.

Limbo is an offbeat comedy in which we follow the life of Syrian migrant Omar and other asylum seekers in a bleak and cold Scotland. They spend their days waiting, waiting and waiting for asylum in Britain, all dutifully attending classes where they are taught British language and culture in a deadpan, humorous way. They are all single young men, and they are not allowed to work while they await their application decision, living minimally in all kind of ways. The backdrop is foggy and windy, and you never get an overview neither of the surroundings nor of the situation. Scenes are spartan and stylish in an odd way like a Kaurismäki film.

Omar is is a musician, but can’t play his oud because he apparently broke his wrist, but there seems to be a mental block that prevents him from performing his art. Instead he carries the oud around in its box which his friend calls a “ coffin for his soul”. This is a heartwarming film about friendships in a strange universe, and humans stuck in limbo, all told through director Ben Sharrock’s beautifully composed frames.

Hun foraktes, trues, slås og spyttes på. Når befolkningen i det lille lokalsamfunnet likevel trenger hennes hjelp, oppsøker de det forfalne huset hennes. Å helbrede andre gjennom sine krefter og rituelle praksis, er både hennes gave og forbannelse. Når hun forsøker å hjelpe, ofrer hun nemlig også litt av seg selv. Hun sverger på at hver gang skal være den siste, men klarer likevel ikke motstå å utøve sine legende ritualer.

Fryktinngytende scener og vold blandes med vakre, frosne landskap og komplekse sinnsstemninger i Dmitry Davydovs tredje spillefilm. Den prisvinnende Scarecrow formidler b.de den harde hverdagen og mystikken i den lokale kulturen i en landsby i republikken Sakha i .st-Russland. Hovedrollen er mesterlig spilt av sangeren Valentina Romanova-Chyskyyray.

She is despised, threatened, beaten, and spat on. When the inhabitants of the small community still need her help, they seek out her lonely, dilapidated house. As a last resort, when no medication or cure works, they beg “Scarecrow” to heal the sick, impotent or to assist a birth. Healing others through her powers and ritual practices is both her gift and the curse.

When she tries to help, she also sacrifices herself. She swears that every time will be the last, yet she cannot resist performing her legendary rituals.

Horror scenes and violence are mixed with beautiful, frozen landscapes and complex emotions in Dmitry Davydov’s third feature film. The award-winning Scarecrow conveys the harsh, authentic, and mystical culture of the Yakutia region through mythology, rites, beliefs, and storytelling. The lead role is convincingly portrayed by singer and non-professional actress Valentina Romanova-Chyskyyray.

The film has its international premiere at TIFF 2021.

Lyz Lopez’ drøm om å bli proff skiløper er i ferd med å bli virkelighet når hun begynner på en prestisjefylt treningsleir og internat for lovende idrettsutøvere. Moren hennes er fraværende, og skitreneren Fred blir snart Lyz’ primærkontakt. Han er først veldig streng, men også støttende og oppmuntrende, og forholdet mellom student og trener tar en mer og mer personlig vending. Selv om det begynner bra, blir denne forbindelsen stadig mer usunn for tenåringen. Kan Lyz finne veien ut av trenerens innflytelse?

Satt til de franske Alpene, tar Slalom opp temaet misbruk med dybde og kompleksitet, med fokus på Lyzs følelser.

Når hun begynner å planlegge sin egen begravelse, finner hun ut at det skal bygges en demning som vil oversvømme den lokale kirkegården og tvinge hele landsbyen til å flytte. Tradisjon blir konfrontert med en verden i stadig utvikling, men er enhver forandring til det bedre?

The Truffle Hunters Trøffeljegerne i denne filmen er ikke som andre jegere. Disse herrene er godt forbi vanlig pensjonsalder, men lar ikke dét stoppe dem i jakten på den gastronomiske superingrediensen.

When she instead receives news of his accidental death, Mantoa is distraught and struggles to find meaning in her existence. In a world that is constantly evolving, traditions are always confronted to the present, but is change always for the better?

The titular truffle hunters of this film are not your ordinary hunters. Well beyond the age of retirement, these gentlemen won’t let age stand in the way of their search for the so-called diamond of the kitchen. In shades of green and with cane in hand, they swagger through the forest on a secretive mission towards their preferred hunting grounds. Competition is stiff, but the hunt goes beyond the financial gain of a potential sale. The hunters love what they do, and neither worried wives nor poisonous bait will deter them.

Taking place in the mountains of Lesotho, This Is Not a Burial, It’s a Resurrection takes full advantage of its spectacular setting.

Through poetic language and music, director Lemohang Jeremiah Mosese tells a slow-paced story of life, death and the strength of the human spirit. His background as a visual artist shines through in his use of composition and mood, to create a meditative and touching experience.

Directing duo Dweck and Kershaw utilize fixed camera positions in this observant documentary, for which they’ve been granted unique access to the truffle hunters and their secrets.

The striking images create a fairytale-like atmosphere only to shake us out of it in a refreshing way. The Truffle Hunters combines the hunters’ love of life and years of experience with a genuine love for a rare and peculiar profession.

Norske premierer FOCUS NORWAY TIFF har alltid vendt blikket utover mot resten av verden i sitt program. For fjerde gang har vi i år også en egen seksjon viet norske langfilmer. I år har vi verdenspremiere på spillefilmene Ninjababy (åpningsfilm), Gritt og HAN. Dette er filmer som alle er regissert av kvinnelige regissører, og som hver på sin måte utforsker eksistensielle spørsmål ved å leve i Norge akkurat nå.

In addition to the Opening Film Ninjababy, this year we present Gritt and HAN. All three directed by women, all three combining wit and seriousness, and each of them in their own way asking existential questions about modern Norwegian society.

Gritt, som en gang het Gry-Jeanette, dro rett fra dramaskole til Hollywood, men møtte raskt veggen og endret kurs. 17 omflakkende år senere er hun tilbake i Oslo. Mens hennes tidligere studievenner gjør karrierer på Oslos teaterscener, brenner hun for å virkeliggjøre et stort, radikalt kunstprosjekt.

Men det skorter på interesse og støtte. Når Gritt får et knusende avslag og samtidig mister leiligheten hun har lånt, blir livssituasjonen mer desperat. En mulighet til å assistere ved et teater oppstår, og Gritt griper sjansen. Hun snik-flytter inn bak scenen, og mens teatergruppa er på turné begynner Gritt på sin egen forestilling med mål om å begrave kapitalismen og patriarkatet for godt.

Gritt følger følger bevegelseskunstneren Gritts hverdag og utrettelige forsøk på å passe inn og samtidig opprettholde en alternativ stemme. Gjennom tragikomiske situasjoner og poetiske betraktninger, avdekker filmen samfunnets og kunstog kulturlivets trange rammer.

Gritt, once named Gry-Jeanette, went straight from drama school to Hollywood, but quickly hit a wall and changed course. 17 years later, she is back in Oslo. While her former student friends are making careers on Oslo's theater stages, she is passionate about realizing an ambitious, radical art project. But she is met by a lack of interest and support. When Gritt gets a crushing rejection and at the same time loses the apartment she has borrowed, her life situation becomes more desperate. An opportunity to assist at a theater arises, and Gritt seizes the chance. She sneaks in behind the scenes, and while the theater group is on tour, she starts her own performance with the goal of burying capitalism and patriarchy for good.

Gritt follows the movement artist Gritt's everyday life and tireless attempts to fit in and at the same time maintain an alternative voice. Through tragicomic situations and poetic considerations, the film reveals the narrow confines of society and art and cultural life.

Petter (60) er en anerkjent manusforfatter som vil lage film om nasjonalhelten Fritjof Nansen. Men når Petter får uventede problemer med finansieringen av filmen, utløser det en spiral av uheldige omstendigheter som kulminerer under det som skulle vært en hyggelig middag med gode venner samme kveld. En av de som har krysset hans vei denne dagen er Eirik (30). En gang har nok Eirik trodd på sin egen fortelling om firmaet han skal starte, men nå framstår han desperat i all sin oppførsel. Ikke minst er han manisk opptatt av å rette opp i en urett han mener Petter har begått. På en annen kant av Oslo, sliter Harald (11) med å finne seg til rette både på skolen og hjemme. Hvorfor blir han så fort sint? Når læreren hans forsøker finne ut hva som er galt, får hun ingen svar.

Et borende blikk på forventinger, roller og sosiale situasjoner, gir assosiasjoner til Ruben Östlunds samtidsportretter. Med humor og alvor, berører Guro Bruusgaards spillefilmdebut både overfladiske og mer dyptgående problemstillinger knyttet til mannsrollen i det moderne Norge.

Petter (60) is a renowned screenwriter who wants to make a film about the national hero Fritjof Nansen. But when Petter encounters unexpected problems with the financing of the film, it triggers a spiral of unfortunate circumstances that culminates in what should have been a pleasant dinner with good friends. One of the those he meets that day is Eirik (30).

Eirik once believed in his own story about the company he will start, but now he appears desperate. Not least, he is manically concerned with righting an injustice he believes Petter has committed. On the other side of Oslo, Harald (11) is struggling to find his place both at school and at home. Why does he get angry so fast? When his teacher tries to find out what is wrong, she gets no answer.

HIM is penetrating look at expectations, roles and social situations, which is reminiscent of Ruben Östlund's contemporary portraits. With humor and seriousness, Guro Bruusgaard's feature film debut touches on both superficial and more in-depth issues related to the male role in modern Norway.

Kunsten å blande alvor og moro Et intervju med Ninjababy-regissør Yngvild Sve Flikke. Årets åpningsfilm på TIFF er Ninjababy, en norsk film regissert av Yngvild Sve Flikke.

Vi tok en prat med henne for å høre mer om filmen og prosessen bak kamera.

Hvorfor ville du fortelle akkurat denne historien?

Det har nok sammenheng med at jeg har vært gravid to ganger selv. Det er så absurd, det er så alien- aktig at det vokser et liv inni deg. For noen år siden lagde jeg filmen Kvinner i for store herreskjorter som er løst basert på Gunnhild Øyehaugs bok «Vente, blinke». Da jeg leste den boka var det karakteren Trine, som i filmen spilles av Henriette Steenstrup, som grep meg mest. Trine er en ufrivillig gravid dame i slutten av 30-årene som slites i dilemmaet karriere-barn. KIFHS er en multiplot film med begrenset tid til hver karakter; jeg lurte på om det gikk an å lage en mer spesifikk og emosjonell film om selve graviditeten, den emosjonelle berg-og-dalbanen du er i når du er gravid og alle de crazy tankene du gjør deg da. For det er jo ikke bare bra, selv for meg som har hatt to veldig ønskede graviditeter. Selv nå tenker jeg, «herregud, duger jeg som mor?» Jeg føler meg jo som en idiot, veldig ofte. Noen dager er det bare sånn, og så går det bra neste dag. Det var litt det jeg ville inn i, de følelsene, ambivalensen.

Ninjababy er basert på Inga Sætres tegneserieroman «Fallteknikk», som kom i 2011. Jeg hadde ikke jobbet med Inga før, men kjente til arbeidene hennes.

Boka handler om ei 16 år gammel jente som blir ufrivillig gravid, og som samtidig har flyttet på hybel for å gå på videregående. Da jeg først snakket med Inga, var jeg veldig nysgjerrig på hvordan hun stilte seg til å gjøre om den historien. Hun sa ja!

Hvordan var det å samarbeide med Inga Sætre?

Helt fantastisk! Hun er veldig åpen, og vi har vært veldig enige om hva filmen skulle fortelle. Vi tok med oss det inn i klippen, for Inga satt og animerte i rommet ved siden av meg og Karen Gravås da vi klippet. Hvis vi fikk en idé underveis, var det lett å snakke sammen.

Det har vært mye jobb, men gøy jobb.

Hvor mange år har du jobbet med filmen?

Hvert prosjekt har sin vei, kan du si. Det her er en film jeg egentlig fikk ideen til i 2015, men så har jeg gjort andre ting innimellom. Inga og jeg jobbet periodevis med prosjektet over lenger tid. Vi satte av ei uke her og ei uke der. Filmen har vært i utvikling under Nye Veier, en ordning fra Norsk filminstitutt. Det har vært helt viktig for resultatet, tror jeg. Nye Veier har veldig fokus på regi og at du

skal tørre å prøve nye ting. Jeg ville for eksempel blande animasjon og live-action på en måte der det animerte ikke bare blir pynt, men har en narrativ funksjon. Selv om jeg har jobbet med animasjon før, så har jeg aldri mikset det på denne måten.

Inga og jeg arbeidet mye med historien, og så kom Johan Fasting inn på manussida. Jeg hadde allerede jobbet med ham på to sesonger av «Heimebane». Da han fikk materialet Inga og jeg hadde jobbet med, kom han opp med karakteren Ninjababy, som er en animert karakter.

Jeg husker jeg leste utkastet hans og tenkte, «OK, det blir film!» Man må ha en idé om hvordan filmen skal føles og være, men veien dit er ofte ganske kronglete.

Hvordan har det vært å jobbe med animasjon på film?

Du må planlegge veldig godt. Skuespillerne må skjønne hva vi holder på med. Hele filmteamet må være innforstått med at vi filmer bare halvparten av det scenen egentlig skal være, fordi det andre skal legges på etterpå. Skuespilleren må være til stede i alle følelsene selv om hun bare snakker ut i lufta. Det er ganske krevende, men Kristine var superbra. Hun er også illustratør og forfatter selv, så hun skjønte veldig godt det aspektet av det vi holdt på med. Selv om det er Inga som har laget de fleste tegningene i filmen, så har faktisk Kristine også laget noen av rekvisittene.

Selv om det ikke er hovedfokus, vil jeg si at vennskap også er et viktig tema i filmen, kan du si litt om det?

Så bra du sier det! Litt av min sorg er at vi ikke fikk med nok av det. I boka handler det mer om vennskapsforholdet mellom de to venninnene. Det er noe med at et vennskapsforhold forandres i det den ene blir gravid, og det opplever man uansett om man er 25 eller 40. Plutselig har man ikke de samme prioriteringene. I filmen har trekantdramaet mellom Rakel og de to mannlige karakterene fått stor plass. Men jeg er veldig glad for at du nevner det med vennskapet, for det jobbet vi mye med. Det med å bo i kollektiv og dasse i underbuksa, liksom. Vi måtte klippe bort noen fine venninnescener i sofaen, som bare var fjas. Men vi har med litt fjas, da, sånn gøy fjas man kan kjenne seg igjen i! Jeg prøver hele tiden å ha den miksen mellom humor og alvor. Det er jo litt fjolleri og tull og fjas, men så er det også veldig alvorlige ting i bunn.

MOTHER I AM SUFFOCATING, THIS IS MY LAST FILM ABOUT YOU. MOGUL MOWGLI «I chose Mogul Mowgli because it manages to tell a story about our dreams being killed because we can’t cope with who we are or who we came from. It captures what it’s like coming from a second generation family, without being about the migrant experience and it poses questions about inherited trauma that are fascinating. Add to this that it’s told in a cinematic style with ghosts and great music and it seemed a simple choice.»

BLACK GIRL Black Girl is one of the strongest cinematic experiences I’ve had. The first time I saw it I was impressed by the beauty and humanity of the protagonist. I could relate to Diouana in so many ways, being a stranger in a strange place. Throughout the film, we are guided by her thoughts, her fears and a dream of Europe bound to becoming a nightmare. This is the first time I’ve watched an emigrant on screen, a woman of colour, coming to terms with her own spiritual ancestry through questioning a western society.”

“My motivation for choosing this film is actually the director, who I find really interesting and who represents a generation that tells African stories in a different way. I find this interesting, and I would also like to show that contemporary art and cultural practices exist outside Europe as well. That’s something I feel is not told enough.

And personally, I recognize myself in the story of how other people’s perspectives can become a cross that we who are different must bear and find ourselves in. This is shown literally in the film. I recognize myself in the stigmas that may have affected or still affect relationships between children who grow up in cultures other than their own parents. It contributes to shaping the sense of belonging and the feeling of achieving a form of harmonious coexistence and belonging with mother and father in a foreign culture. “

EAST IS EAST «It’s a movie I’ve seen many times. I cried and laughed with the characters, and have recognized myself in it. Growing up with such a strict father, who lives by behaviors and values from his home country. The children who feel pressured by the family while living a double life. It is about living between two worlds, and is told with warmth and charm.

It is probably the first film I saw where I could identify myself, and I see it as crucial to tell stories where young people can identify themselves and find comfort and hope.»

I år gleder jeg meg mest til å oppleve samholdet TIFF-festivalen skaper, som vi nå så sårt trenger, med god og trygg avstand til hverandre. Å se film på TIFF er noe helt spesielt: salene, menneskene og – ikke minst – filmene, som du kan ende med å tenke på i ukesvis og aldri ville funnet frem til selv. Film er best på kino og jeg ser frem til å oppleve Slalom, Queen & Slim og The Last Shift på det store lerretet!

Jeg gleder meg mest til filmkonsertene og til å se alle de fantastiske kortfilmene i Film fra Nord på stort lerret!

Men hvis det er én ting som er sikkert, så er det at film er magisk på utekino, og når alle barnehagebarna tidlig på morgenkvisten samles og fyller Stortorget, med store øyne og små kropper fylt med forventning - da finner du meg der i håp om å få ta del i magien.

Jeg gleder meg til å teste ut nydelige Alfheim som filmvenue, og tror spesielt filmkonsertene der blir magiske. Velkommen om bord Hermes er et nordnorsk fiskebåtrederi med historie helt tilbake til 1952.

Med et klart mål om å være en synlig og åpen aktør, er filmproduksjon og direktesendinger fra vår aktivitet på fiskefeltene to prioriterte grep.

I storfilmen Den 12. mann ble «Hermes II», båten rederiet startet med, brukt i rollen som «Bratholm I». Vi var også en av hovedpartnerne i denne produksjonen, men filmeventyret stoppet ikke der. Nå gleder vi oss stort over å ha blitt ønsket velkommen om bord også i TIFF-universet.

Safe at TIFF! Our guidelines and measures for a covid-19 free festival At the Tromsø International Film Festival we want to make sure that everyone has a safe and healthy festival experience. We take our responsibility when it comes to pandemic prevention very seriously. We work in close cooporation with the local health authorities and all our festival events will be adjusted to the current restrictions from the local and national authorities.

Our goal is to create unforgettable experiences, where we are togeher - while making a safe space for everyone.

What we at TIFF do

What you need to do

• Make sure that you can keep distance (minimum 1 meter) to your fellow moviegoers • Make sure that we have plenty of hand disinfectant and soap at our venues • Limit our capacity in the theatres to maximum 200 persons with one seat between each person/household. (For most venues there will be less than 200 people) • Have fixed seating at all indoor screenings • There will not be rush tickets in 2021 • Program our schedule with more time between each screening to avoid lines and give time for our staff to disinfect seats • Sell our tickets online and scan them at the venue to minimize physical contact • Track our audience and guests for safety measures. (Personal data will be saved and used in case of infection tracing only) • Have seats for everyone and table sevice at all indoor social events • Have a protocol for keeping our venues clean and train our staff and volunteers according to our protocol. (We also have a close collaboration with the Chief Physician in the Tromsø Municipality.)

Ticket Sales To minimize physical contact due to the Covid-19 pandemic, all festival tickets will be sold online.

HOW TO BUY TICKETS

The sale of tickets for TIFF 2021 will open on January the 11th at 8am. This year, we do not have any actual ticket desk, but it has never been easier to buy your tickets for TIFF: All you need is an internet connection, and you can get everything you need quickly and efficiently. You do not need to register or to have a log-in to buy tickets.

TICKET CARDS

If you are going to watch lots of films, it pays off to buy a ticket card (which used to be called “value card”). You can buy either 12 or 22 tickets on www.tiff.no. When you buy a ticket card, you will immediately receive a code that you will use when you buy the tickets for each film. Ticket cards get you cheaper tickets, and it’s also possible to share a card with friends.

TICKETS

Choose the film you want to se in the program at www.tiff. no, and click “buy ticket”. You’re only a few steps away from receiving your ticket, which will be sent both by text message and e-mail.

Choose “single ticket” if you want to pay by card or with Vipps, or choose “Ticket Card” if you have one. Once at the screening

venue, the only thing you need to show is the SMS you received.

If you really want a paper ticket, you can easily print it yourself on a regular printer. We also recommend that you download the app "TicketCo Wallet", where you can easily buy tickets and store all your tickets in one place.

FESTIVAL WRISTBAND

You need to have a festival wristband to access the screenings.

You can buy your festival wristband on the website www.tiff. no, the same way you buy a ticket to a film screening. You don’t need the festival wristband when you buy the tickets to the film screenings, but you need to wear the wristband before you go to your first film screening. To get the wristband itself, show the receipt to your “ticket for festival certificate/wristband” at the kiosk at Aurora Kino Fokus from January 1st , or at TIFF's information desk in the Rødbank from January 11th, or to the usher at the door at all screenings during the festival.

TIDSKAPSEL@TIFF21 Sammen med Filmfond Nord har vi gjort 155 kortfilmer tilgjengelige på www.tidskapsel.film Et utvalg av filmene vises i Tidskapsel@TIFF21 under festivalen.

East Side Stories Grensene mot øst er nærmere i nord, veien til våre naboland kortere. Gjennom skiftende tider og politiske klima har Tromsø internasjonale filmfestival ønsket å fremme kulturutveksling og styrke båndene på tvers av landegrenser. Siden festivalen startet i 1991 har vi vist et bredt spekter av filmer som altfor sjelden når fram til norske kinolerreter.

Under festivalens første år viste vi noen av de siste filmene som offisielt var produsert i Sovjetunionen. Vi har siden hatt filmer fra området gjennom 30 begivenhetsrike år.

Programmet viser i dag filmer fra Russland og tidligere Sovjetstater.

In the spirit of the historically close ties between Tromsø and our neighbors in the East, Tromsø International Film Festival aims to promote cultural exchange between our countries by presenting new films from the northeast.

Starting with a selection of officially produced Soviet films at the very first festival edition back in 1991, we have continued to present a selection of titles that otherwise rarely would be screened in Norwegian cinemas.

Since 2002, this program has been a regular sidebar for feature films and documentaries from Russia and former Soviet states.

Lena is crushed by her husband’s possible infidelity and decides to pay him back in his own coin. It doesn’t take long before the situation is out of control, and her revenge is beginning to cost her dearly.

The last days of the Soviet Union are depicted here through the childhood memories of a boy named Johannes. This story from Estonia follows an eccentric family in their wild adventures, with the temptations from the West only a boat ride away.

Et lavmælt, nært portrett av et mor-sønn-forhold. Regissør Dmitry Davydov forteller hjertevarmende, innimellom hjerteskjærende, og veldig gjenkjennelig om familie, sykdom, liv og død. Historien er satt til det nordlige, iskalde Yakutia i Russland. Filmen har sin internasjonal premiere på TIFF 2021.

I en isolert landsby nær Beringstredet bor et samfunn av hvaljegere. En av dem, tenåringsgutten Leshka, drømmer om å flytte til Amerika for å finne en cam girl han har sett på Internett. Det er helt til virkeligheten innhenter ham.

A film that both warms and breaks your heart, set in the ice-cold Russian region Yakutia. With a signature style, amateur actors and great sensitivity, Davydov depicts the relationship between an adult son and his mother, who suffers from Alzheimer. This film has its international premiere at TIFF 2021.

Med programmet USA bak fasaden utforsker vi sentrale trekk som rasemotsetninger, klasse og politisk ideologi. Men vi håper også å få fram mer subtile tendenser i et land som alltid har vært preget av steile fronter.

Though many people talk about an American decline, the USA still firmly remains the world’s leading power – militarily, economically, and not least culturally. Political waves from the US, be it the MeToo movement or Black Lives Matters, spread all over the world. And yet, the last years, and particularly the aftermath of the recent presidential election, have shown a nation in deep turmoil.

Stanley har i 38 år jobbet nattskift på en fast food-restaurant.

Før han blir pensjonist må han lære opp sin etterfølger, men møtet med den unge Jevon blir en utfordring. Generasjonskonflikt, klasse og rase blir raskt ingredienser på menyen.

I Am Not Your Negro covers the history from the 1950s racial segregation up to today’s Black Lives Matters movement. Based on James Baldwin’s unfinished book script, the documentary gives a sharp and condensed report on racism in USA.

Stanley has worked at a fast food for the past 38 years, and is about to retire. But when he meets his successor, the young, self-confident Jevon, generational conflict, class and race quickly turn out to be the main ingredients on the menu.

17-year-old Autumn is pregnant and knows she wants an abortion, but the conservative laws in her hometown in Pennsylvania make it almost impossible. A strong and important film about the lives of young women in today’s USA.

After becoming a widow, Fern moves to live in her converted camping van, and makes a living from odd jobs. Mostly she lives a very cheap life. Yet, she lives with a freedom that she is not ready to give up, and that perhaps many will envy her.

FFN – Lockdown Three filmmakers from the North of Norway have documented the ongoing global pandemic, as seen from their standpoint in the north.

When the pandemic hit Norway, the government advised against going on mountain hikes, in order to minimize the risk of precious resources being spent on rescue operations. Relative Risk is a film that explores the concepts of health, responsibility and risk in encounters with people in nature who each play their role in the issue: a doctor on a skiing trip, a psychologist on a hike, a group of young people riding longboards, and a youth worker climbing a mountain wall.

Ealát “As long as the reindeer exist here, so do we”. Through filmmaker Elle Márjá Eira’s eyes we follow her family in different seasons with their reindeer herd. Ealát is a story about living and surviving in Sámi reindeer husbandry in strange times.

A special screening is not like other screenings, to point out the obvious. This section offers a whole range of unique film experiences, like film concerts in the closed down swimming pool Alfheim and screenings at our outdoor Winter Cinema. Gunda is a beautiful and timely reminder of how valuable life is for all living beings. A quiet life on a farm can be a good life, and one gets a peaceful and wholesome experience when watching this documentary about the pig Gunda.

This eye-opening and captivating documentary depicts a coal miners’ strike in Kentucky, and won an Academy Award in 1976. Forty-five years on, it seems more topical than ever.

The film is presented by the Norwegian Federation of Film Societies.

This event in Tromsø is part of the National Museum’s event series SIDESPRANG. Until the new museum building and the exhibition “Jeg kaller det kunst / I call it art” are ready, the National Museum will take artists from the exhibition to cities and villages in Norway and show everything from performances and concerts to conversations and video.

Det hele toppes med en eventyrlig familiedag lørdag 15. januar, hvor vi viser både Hålogaland teaters forstilling Utsikt og den nydelige animasjonsklassikeren Sangen fra Havet.

Klokken 09.00 om morgenen viser vi kortfilmprogrammer for barn i ulike aldre. På ettermiddagen har vi visinger 16.30 og 18.30 rettet mot vårt allmenne publikum. POSTKAPITALISTISK ARKITEKTUR-TV VOL.4 @TIFF, BY NANGO&BONGO Live at Stortorget 22 January

Renowned Tromsø artists Joar Nango and director Ken-Are Bongo are creating their own digital TV series where they introduce their home and local environment in Sápmi. They travel through snowcovered landscapes with a mobile TV studio in their red sprinter and snowmobile. Along the way, they meet guests over a campfire coffee cup, such as academic researchers, craftsmen and activists. They explore popular construction techniques for large-scale political power structures that form the basis of the social structure in the north. Nango & Bongo takes us to the Post-Capitalist Architecture Universe (PCA-TV) and the ongoing study of architecture after the fall of capitalism.

In 2020, the Sami artist and architect Joar Nango was this year’s festival artist in Bergen. Together with Ken Are Bongo, they produced 3 episodes of PCA-TV for Bergen Kunsthall. During TIFF 2021, they present three short episodes that are specially produced for the festival.

Artists’ Film International is a collaborative project featuring film, video and animation from around the world. Established by the Whitechapel Gallery in 2008, AFI includes 20 global partner organisations.

The Artists’ Film International 2020 programme responds to the theme of language. Local sounds, rituals and political realities feature, from the rhythms and images.

Kurant Visningsrom presents an experimental art and film programme, Rom på rundgang that raises the question ’how does a city like Tromsø define itself beyond tourism?’.

By filling the windows of tourist shops, now closed and empty due to the pandemic, with artist’ moving image works and an installation, Rom på rundgang seeks to explore the new possibilities presented in these temporarily empty spaces; for culture and for community.

Dedicated artists’ film space, KINOBOX, presents a new, site specific work for TIFF from Britt Al-Busultan, projected into a transitional outdoor space outside Rådstua.

Rom på rundgang is a direct response to Tromsøs ever increasing push towards tourism. The project is a curatorial collaboration between SCOTTY (Berlin), Juliane Zelwies and Kurant.

Moving image artist Britt Al-Busultan (FI), works at the border between filmmaking, performance and cinema, using the materiality of 16mm film and its projection to delve into deeper questions about experience itself. Constructing invented stories, she imagines our future reality based on current knowledge and experience, and outdated technologies.

KINOBOX is a micro-cinema – an intimate screening space dedicated to showing artists’ moving-image in Rådstua basement, in the centre of Tromsø. The KINOBOX is initiated, run and curated by Ruth Aitken and Sarah Schipschack.
