Slik vi i de andre programmene viser perler fra hele verden, viser vi her det beste fra vår egen utvida nærregion. Tromsøpalmen gis til beste film i konkurranse. Films from the north presents the best of new shorts and documentaries made in the northern parts of Finland, Sweden, Norway, Russia and Canada. Following the logic of the festival we present regional films one would often not be able to see if not screened at TIFF. The Tromsø Palm is awarded to the best film in competition.

last year at the opening night of the Films from the north program, the north norwegian Film Center awarded four short film projects financial support. During 2008 these films have been shot and edited, and exactly one year later we are able to present the finished films at this year’s opening night. One of them has already won the norwegian Amanda award; the three others will have their official world premieres at TIFF:

I learn the sámi language my way; I do it in the form of a video diary. I investigate the big city of Stockholm from my perspective and in a Sámi way. I conduct the investigation with the purpose to learn new words. How do you say: “I am walking here on the pedestrian street, but now I am entering a fashion shop. Wow! What a nice dress, got to have it.” I am carrying a dictionary and a phone ... in emergencies I can phone my relative.

This chapter of my video diary investigates the body as a tool, a house, and as flesh. I learn what the different parts of my body are called in Sámi language. I do this in my home. I try out my different Sámi accessories on my body: like the kolt (traditional dress), the belt, the shoes, and the jewellery. If I feel good in my body, then I feel good everywhere.

In this film I want to learn more about the forest in a Sámi way. I am going to the forest to learn the “forest words”. I am thinking about the nature’s creatures from the old Sámi mythology and at the same time I am learning new words. I bring with me a pen. I am writing Sámi words on a tree, a rock, the soil, and the roots.

A documentary about a quest for identity. At the moment when her mother fades into the land of oblivion, Ellen, the filmmaker, discovers that she has been hiding her indigenous Sámi heritage from her. In order to fill the voids from the past, Ellen sets out to recover the people, connections and places that her mother once left behind.

In August 1960, Laila Heinonen, Oulu’s provincial state office clerk, received a message from God: “If the people of Finland do not repent by the year 1962, I will give them to the hands of the enemy.” Hence, a strict religious movement called heinoslaisuus came into being. At the same time youth culture arrived in Oulu. The relationship between teenagers and the cult’s members became strained and riots broke out.

JEnnY, gUD OCH TYsTnADEn takes place in an environment where you can not take for granted that you will be completely accepted for who you are. Jenny is studying her last term at Johannelund Theological University to become a priest. Jenny is also married to Linda, which regularly leads to awkward situations. “Sometimes I wonder what that silence means”, she says. “The one that follows when I say I am married to a woman?”

This film is a portrait of artist Olaf Storø, living in Longyearbyen, Spitzbergen. He runs a gallery, makes and prints lithographs and creates art out of daily life. The film follows Olaf through the dark winter months while he is working on his ice polar bear sculpture that will guard the entrance of the Global Seed Vault in Longyearbyen. We also get an insight in many of his other artistic projects as well as his thoughts about the daily life in this Far North settlement.

BArE vær depicts a small island settlement in a place with quite an extreme nature. Fishermen, businessmen and artisans tells us about Henningsvær in Lofoten, and how they are searching for different ways to keep their community alive. With great affection for this place where the majesty of nature is ever present, they still care about how new opportunities must be found as the old fishing industry is fading away.

At the start of the bitter Winter War the Soviet Red Army invaded Finnish-Karelia forcing hundreds of thousands of civilians deep into Finland. Teenagers Annikki, Inkeri and Hilkka left their families to drive cattle through deep snow and hostile lands. A lifetime later they look back on their adventures that coincided with their journey to adulthood.

The flesh becomes uneasy and the meat is twisting into something unfamiliar. It becomes a collage of uncanny bits and degenerate angles, a blueprint for reconstruction. But the process is disturbed by a burning gaze that will not let go. It is a failed attempt of documentation and reconstruction of the twisted body mass.

The flashbacks from the man’s childhood only raise more questions about his past and future.

An Inuit hunter drives his dog team out on the frozen Arctic Ocean in search of seals, but instead becomes a witness to murder. In the microscopic communities of Arctic Alaska there is no anonymity; the hunter knows both victim and murderer. Claiming self-defense, the murderer tries to persuade his friend to forget what he has seen, and help dispose of the body. The hunter is then forced to navigate the uneasy morality between honoring the memory of one friend and destroying the life of another.

The people of East greenland inhabit a small strip of coastal land at the very edge of the biggest island of the world. Long and hard winters have always shaped daily life here, a life that has changed within a few generations from earth house to modernity, completed with helicopters, satellite TV and alcohol. This documentary shows us East Greenland today, the village in summer and winter, and the family between seal hunting and computer games.

gAlsKAP I nOrD is a documentary about what happens when the buddies who made the film KILL BULJO team up with professional film workers and get millions of Norwegian kroner to make Norway’s first Nazi zombie feature: DEAD SNOW. With a tight schedule and challenging weather in Finnmark, the shoot turns out to be far tougher than expected.

During one week in 2002 Marte Vold and Ole Giæver got ideas, shot and edited 50 short films which were screened as an hour long feature on the last day of the project. The idea was to see if uncensored mass production of every idea they got would result in a different quality than more time demanding film projects. The project was repeated five times with various numbers of films made during one week, resulting in altogether 260 films in 5 weeks. This film is a compilation of their 50 best. This is a musical road movie following the paths of the legendary singer/songwriter Cornelis Vreeswijk, a journey done by his son Jack and his best friend Stefan Sundstrøm, both fathers and singers/songwriters themselves. Cornelis was once the great idol for Stefan, while Jack always has been living in his father’s shadow. The journey brings them to Tromsø. It is also a journey back in time, a philosophical reflection upon Cornelis as a father and an idol. (Norwegian dialogue, no subtitles.)

We are in Polmak in Tana, Northern Norway. Laila Ingvaldsen does not have any children and wants to be buried next to the grave of a child. But she gets an even greater gift: To walk through the gates of heaven holding hands with a little boy. At the same time, a priest is struggling to get over the pain following the death of her husband. While the ice is starting to form on the Tana River again, life takes its own turns.
