Films from the North presents the best of new shorts and documentaries made in the northern parts of Finland, Sweden, Norway, Russia and Canada. Following the logic of the festival we present regional films one would often not be able to see if not screened at TIFF. The Tromsø Palm is awarded to the best film in competition.

Aksel, the big brother, does not like this at all. The outcome is disasterous.

It describes a landscape where beauty and harsh exploitation exist side by side, and people live between despair and hope. The river itself has the voice of a woman. She narrates the dramatic story of how the reindeer-herders and log-drivers first came to work along the shores of this river.
UNIVERSAl MOVEMENT MAchINE: MEShEll MElVIN PORTRAITS
Dir: kirby hammond / canada 200 / m contact: kirby hammond: kirbyhammond@yahoo.ca Filmed in Whitehorse and at the Montreal Centre for Contemporary Textiles, this film presents the work of Yukon artist Meshell Melvin. She uses the Universal Movement embroidery machine (invented in France in the 1860s) like charcoal on a sketchpad to create her unique portraits. We observe her technique and discover the philosophy behind her art. AARNE

Still, a handful of senior citizens refuse to move from the once-proud mining town. We meet four of them in their own absurd, little universe.

Artscape Nordland has been one of the most talked about and controversial art initiatives in Norway in recent times. Herleik has lived and worked most of his life in an institution for the mentally challenged, where he for the last ten years has been reduced to a mass producer of ceramics. This warm, human portrait questions the way the institution where Herleik works, benefits on Herleik’s artistic skills and reputation as an artist.

They have no state of their own, but are citizens of the countries they live in. The Sámi way of living has changed radically during the last 50 years. For many people this has meant a change from half-nomadic reindeer herding to modern city life. In this film we meet nine Sámi people living in different parts of the world. They tell their own story, and try to answer the question “Who am I?”.

wINNER OF ThE AGE GROUP 21-2 AT NUFF 200 Dir: Marika Väisänen / Finland 200 / 2m In this documentary we are introduced to the young and vital woman Kaisa, who has voluntary amputated her feet after suffering several years from arthritis. She shows the viewer her new prosthesis, and discusses what it is like to be a handicapped woman in our society.

After getting married, she moved from Muonio Sámi village, where she had grown up in a lap cot. In the beginning of the Finnish Winter War in 1939, Urho and his two younger brothers had to leave their home village of Ala-Kurtti by the Tuntsa River as refugees. Now, the brothers come to visit Urho and recollect memories from their dear home river.

The work of the partisans was a vital part of the war effort. But as the Norwegian Intelligence Service later suspected them of cooperating with the Russians during the Cold War, this was never acknowledged by the government.

Johnny lives among greedy and mad men. He leads a life filled with crime, and has forgotten his own humanity. Everything changes when Johnny meets Sophia. Johnny decides to help her, but his crime partners don’t like that. A battle starts, and only the toughest one will survive.
