Clean Energy (Solar Car / Wind Turbine)

Leads: Kimla Lee & Imani Caldwell

In this workshop, students will examine wind power—a renewable energy resource with increasing importance to our society. Students will build and test their solar-powered cars and miniature wind turbines.

DNA Discovery

Leads: Debi Swain Lenz & Misty Thomas

This hands-on, interactive workshop engages students in exploring renewable energy concepts and engineering principles through two exciting projects. Students will work individually and together to design, build, and test their solar-powered cars and miniature wind turbines. The workshop fosters creativity, critical thinking, collaboration, and teamwork skills.

Fun-damentals of Biotechnology

Leads: Buthainah Al Fifaie & Shalom Chansarira

In this workshop you will learn all about the exciting field of Biotechnology through hands-on activities. Students will perform a scientific procedure utilizing M&Ms and food dye. They will learn about food dye, molecule sizes, and how scientists use tools and techniques to observe and manipulate DNA and proteins.

Robotics

Leads: Lynn Kopp & Laura Micek

In this workshop, students will build robots (Lego’s Mindstorm EV3 kits) and program them, and command the robot to carry out actions and bring them to life.

Science of Cosmetics

Lead: ShuDon Brown

In this workshop, students will learn what chemical engineering is and what a chemical engineer does through the lens of cosmetics. Students will learn how chemicals mix and form new useful products that can be used as cosmetics and self-care products.

X-ray Paleontology of Duke Lemur

Leads: Justin Gladman & Emily Snell

In this workshop, students will learn how two different STEM fields –engineering and paleontology – work together at Duke to unlock the secrets of lemurs! Using x-ray vision with tools like the MicroCT lets us look into rocks that hold ancient lemur bones.
