Chavers preached on New Year’s Watch Night, “Stay true to the living God.” The scripture came from Psalms 61. I am proclaiming for myself to implement and ponder over this daily to become a better person, and to allocate the proper time with the Lord. He has been so good to me, he is so faithful, and true to all of us despite looking at our faults and failures; he has taking exceptional care of you and me.

No matter what transpired last year; you must claim for yourself unlimited possibilities for this year. I know that is exactly what I am claiming for myself, and I hope you are doing the same for yourself.

Jekalyn Carr has a song out there called, “You Will Win” and within that song she says, “Everything attached to me wins, and its my winning season.” We must emulate that same attitude, this is my winning season and winning year.

• You have been longing to do something creative and innovative for quite some time; however, last year, you procrastinated by focusing on everything else except what you needed to accomplish to benefit not just yourself but others. Some people are waiting for you to do what you were destined and purposed to do in life.

• You have prayed and prayed about getting a promotion, or maybe you’re seeking for a better place of employment or seeking to become an entrepreneur.

• You are tired of living paycheck to paycheck, and not having anything left for yourself after paying all your

Today, the “world” is a closed place to far too many of OUR children. As we gather together to shop and fellowship, many of the least of us are struggling just to keep their heads above water. With the coming and going of Christmas, half the school term is gone and thus half the learning opportunities as well. “Tis the season to be jolly” yet many of our children cannot read or read below grade level. Even worse, many of their parents are in the same boat. Parents who do not read well or do not read at all, tend to pass that trait to their children unless they make an effort to change the paradigm. The cure for illiteracy is determination and a plan. A “made up mind” can change the most desperate situation into a success story with the help of a good plan of action.

This year, 2018, we will remember Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. and the 50th anniversary of his assassination as we celebrate his birthday.

How many of our children know more than just his name? How many know the depth and breadth of his accomplishments and his strength of character? How many of us really know that he was willing to give his life for the betterment of his people and his community. We recite his

speeches and read about his marches for freedom, but do we take the time to internalize the sacredness of his gift to humanity? He did not want to die and leave his wife and widow and his young children without a father, but he was willing to press on because he wanted a better world in which his children and millions of other children could live and thrive. He was willing to give it all. Guess what? He was a reader! Dr. King took great inspiration from Mahatma Gandhi in pushing forward his Civil Rights Movement.

He never met Gandhi, but he read about him and his peaceful protest strategies, while at Crozer Theological Seminary. He only read about him, yet it was life changing.

As always, I will use the life of Mary McLeod Bethune to illustrate the power of determination and a good plan. My grandmother was born in Maysville, SC to parents who had been enslaved and were still suffering the degradation of that experience. They loved their children but could not offer them an education.

When Mary Jane McLeod was born, her parents, Samuel and Patsy McLeod, were sharecroppers who owned 5 acres of land and the house in which they lived. They wanted better for their children and in par-

ticular Mary. You see, though she was the 15th of 17 children, she was the first born free. She was different.

One day as Mary looked at a book in the home of Patsy’s employer, she was told, “nigger, put that book down, you can’t read”. She said that at that moment she “made up her mind” that she would learn to read.

She didn’t know how but she knew she would find a way. She shared her feelings with her mother who told her to trust God and she did.

Mary Jane McLeod became a world leader and an advocate for political and social change. Years later when asked what she felt helped to change her life from being a sharecropper to an international icon, she stated, “The whole world opened up to me when I learned to read”.

America is said to have one of the highest rates for illiteracy for a country seen as a world leader and one of the top technologically advanced nations in the world. How can we compete on a global level, when we are raising a nation of children who cannot read and write, speak only one language, and do not value education? We can’t! So, what do we do to change it? WE MAKE UP OUR MINDS!

Let today be the day that you actively do something to affect a change in the paradigm of illiteracy in our communities. Remember that the journey of a thousand miles begins with the first step. Never assume that your initial perceptions of others are accurate…dig a little deeper. Be open to see the positive and stop looking for the negative.Illiterate does not mean stupid or unintelligent. Everyone has something to offer and many times it is different from what you offer or how you offer it. Different does not make it wrong or less valuable.

Make 2018 the Year of Literacy.

READ, READ, READ! Read to yourself! Read to your children! Read to the children of others. You may be the link that opens the door to success. Above all else, press on, don’t give up and keep the faith. God is the source, we are only the conduit.

The end of 2017 has provided an opportunity to reflect and regroup, to gain momentum for 2018. Welcome to a new year!

I am fortunate that as an adult, I have had the opportunity to engage with mentors who have taken a vested interest in my growth and success. Dr. Margaret Duncan, a retired Bethune Cookman University professor, Dr. Patrick Coggins, a Stetson University professor, Brenda Cusack, a community matriarch, Tracey Quinn, a devoted mother and wife and others have made such an impact in my life that will never be forgotten.

I can only hope that what they have done for me, I am able to offer to my mentees, clients, family members and friends.

I feel that everything that occurs in my life is a learning experience and that my path towards successful living is predetermined by God. He gives us a bonus by positioning us amongst those who have experienced and triumphed in living. It is only fitting that I share that love and experience with others.

I haven’t always taken the advice given to me or followed the road in front of me. However, I have always acknowledged its presence.

I just want to be great. I just want to be greater than I ever imagined I could be and I want the same for everyone that I come in contact with in my life. But I know with greatness, comes responsibility and I accept the challenge. I accept the responsibility of transparency for those who may be depending on me to accomplish tasks. I accept the responsibility to provide platforms that allow for engagement amongst others who are striving for more. I also accept the responsibility of utilizing the skills taught to me by those that have come before me.

If I were to have a New year’s resolution it would be to create a better 2018 then I did 2017 and use what I have learned from those that have come before me.

Now it’s your turn. I encourage you to take time to reflect on those that have mentored you and provided guidance. What is his/her wow factor?

How has your mentor impacted your life? What responsibility do you take for your own success? Answering these questions is the beginning of the rest of your life. All things doable and all things are possible. Join me on this journey for a better community and life by participating in the Sisters Build Network and Calling a Few Good Men: Call to Action.

25 years of Hope and Encouragement!

The Vision Begins...

Pastor William L. Bradley, Jr., First Lady Dorothalene (Dot) Bradley and the New Hope Baptist Church Family are celebrating 25 years of ministry and community services in West Volusia County. We are gathering to praise and glorify God for all He has done through the ministries of New Hope The Celebrations will begin with three powerful messages from Pastor Joe Johnson, January 28th; Bishop Ronald Kimble, January 29th and Pastor Melvin Dawson, January 30th.

On February 17th at 7:00 pm New Hope is celebrating with a concert provided by the Orlando Community Choir and the UCF Gospel Choir.

On March 23rd at 7:00pm a Grand Silver Anniversary Gala is planned.

Pastor Bradley, a humble man of purpose received a vision from the Lord to create an atmosphere of hope and encouragement in Deland and Deltona communities. In 1993 after a period of seeking the Lord and by the leading of the Holy Spirit He together with First Lady Bradley step out on faith! Today, Daughters, Mia Bradley and Mila Cooper with her husband Dana Cooper support and are active participants in various New Hope ministries.

In the month of June 1992, the Lord inspired William L. Bradley, Jr. to establish a church in the city of Deltona. The commencement of the church began on December 13, 1992 when Pastor William Bradley and fifteen members held the church’s first formal meeting. Pastor Bradley shared his vision of New Hope Baptist Church and on December 19, 1992 Pastor Bradley and eight members met to plan for their first worship service.

The service was held on Sunday, January 10, 1993 at Deltona Lakes Elementary School. The high spirited service was exciting and full of expectation about the great things to come from God through New Hope Baptist Church. The first sermon preached at New Hope was title “There Is No Hopeless Situation with God”, Ecclesiastes 9:4.

Today this serves as the motto of the church and inspires the vision to create an atmosphere of hope and encouragement which drives our mission to reach the lost, teach the found and spread the hope.

Over the next few years New Hope held weekly Bible Study and meetings at the Deltona Library and the Deltona Community Center. In 1995 the church rented office space on Providence Blvd. to use as a Fellowship Center for all the bible classes and meetings.

The Vision Continues…

The vision of the church was to buy property and build a facility to do ministry that would create an atmosphere of hope and encouragement, the members worked together to make this happen.

The Lord blessed New Hope in 1995 to purchase 5-1/2 acres of property.

Pastor Bradley’s desire to provide pro-

grams and services to the community; lead him to establish New Hope Human Services on August 20, 1998.

The year of 1999 was a memorable one for New Hope. On January 10, 1999 the church had a ground breaking ceremony to start on their first building; a 16,000 square foot Family Life Center.

The church held its first worship service in its new facility on December 5, 1999.

“To God Be the Glory for the Things He has done!”

A child care became a reality on January 3, 2000 the ABC Day Care and Preschool Facility was opened to the public.

In the year 2004 the Lord blessed New Hope to purchase an additional 2-1/2 acres of property. In 2014 a community resident donated 21/2 acres and the church currently owns 10 acres.

The Vision for Future...

God has truly blessed New Hope Baptist Church to experienced tremendous growth. We have seen people lives change by the power of God and people have embraced the atmosphere of hope and encouragement that exist at New Hope.

The growth of the Church family and the Deltona community created a need for additional ministries and services.

Pastor Bradley’s vision to build a multifacilities campus “will allow thousands to experience the Hope of Christ, and realize that “There is No Hopeless Situation with God”.

The future “Place of Hope” will be comprises of a dedicated Sanctuary, an Assisted Living Facility, a Business Retail Center, Hope Activity Center, Child Care Facility, Play Ground, Picnic Area, and Christian School. All with a focus on being a stable beacon of hope, encouragement and service to the West Volusia communities of Deltona, Deland, Orange City, Lake Helen, Osteen and Enterprise.
