Encouraging Words from Theresa Jordan This is a month to celebrate love and black history; therefore, I would like to leave you with a couple of things to pounder over.

John 3:16 (Kings James Version), “For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.

No matter how you feel know that you are loved, and you can always revert back to this song, “Yes, Jesus loves me for the bible tells me so.”

Psalms 30:5 (King James Version), “For his anger endureth but a moment; in his favor is life: weeping may endure for a night, but joy cometh in the morning.”

When you feel like you are at the point of given up, here are some great quotes by Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. “Use me, God. Show me how to take who I am, who I want to be, and what I can do, and use it for a purpose greater than myself.”

“Not everybody can be famous, but everybody can be great because greatness is determined by service...You only need a heart full of grace and a soul generated by love.”

“If you can’t fly, run. If you can’t run, walk.

If you can’t walk, crawl. But by all means, keep moving.”

Floyd, Latisha 15, December 2017 Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Dr. Martin Luther King was an exceptional, powerful, and ambitious man; he had many desires for the nation during a hardship of racism and segregation. Dr. King introduced positivity when he revealed that “Darkness cannot drive out darkness: only light can do that.

Hate cannot drive out hate: only love can do that. I have decided to stick to love…Hate is too great a burden to bear.” Dr. Martin Luther King wanted peace within everyone and tried his best to encourage as many people as possible to recognize the importance of conquering the impossible. Dr. King trusts that love and faith were at the center of the struggle for justice because of his solid oath to God. Dr. King forcefully wanted the people to view an alternative perspective of one another; he remained strict within God’s guidelines to proceed as a Civil Rights leader. Dr. King included a form of religion in every speech, march and thought because he knew that God was the only key to stop all the hatred. In his I Have a Dream Speech Dr. King stated, “With this faith, we will be able to work together, to pray together, to struggle together, to go to jail together, to stand up for freedom together, knowing that we will be free one day…This will be the day when all of God’s children will be able to sing with new meaning.” Praying, hoping, and keeping faith is the only option we had to become united and fulfill the dream to love and respect each other despite our race, color, and differences. Being a leader of Christ and holding a position of a pastor, Dr. King had to adjust the mindset in tons of angry, hopeless, and hateful people for this movement to progress in the future. Dr. King concluded that retaliation was never the answer to success but through powerful words a change can occur.

Non-violence was a tactic that Dr. King enforced every single person that was involved in his movement to follow because he wanted to present an example of opportunities that helped negros become noticed and acknowledged without fighting. Dr. King pursued that killing the enemy with kindness is much more effective.

He wanted black people to be strong-minded but have self-control to now allow their emotions to dictate their actions. He yearned to prove that we are not ignorant or below or even savages. Dr. King believed that loving

others when they have been abused is a matter of strength, wisdom and knowledge that have been endured for us to make it through rough times. Dr. King experienced trails and tribulations that revealed his treatment was just as harsh as everyone else.

In the spring of 1963, in Birmingham, Alabama Martin Luther King Jr. was arrested for protesting the treatment of black people and segregation. In the south everything was segregated from bathrooms to schools, to even courthouses. As Dr. King was convicted for protesting, he remained calm, he never resisted, and did exactly as he was told. Every black person that witnessed the scene knew it was an act of discrimination, but there was nothing anyone could have done to help the situation. Due to black people suffering from injustice for so long, Dr. King believed they should not have to wait any longer for change. Dr. King stressed to all the people that followed in his footsteps that nonviolence was essential for him as a man of God, and he believed that violence would ruin the chances to make a major difference in equality. The respect that all his supporters had for him meant that they did not want to disappoint him, so they followed the rules to not react negatively. This therefore not only makes Dr. King an outstanding leader and reverend but also an excellent educator for all the African-American people.

Dr. King’s most familiar impact would be the passion that he had for the importance of education. Dr. King was known to emphasize different influences, depending on his audience, focusing on white theologians and philosophers before white audiences, and black religious experience before black audiences. He knew how to handle many situations and wanted to share that understanding and confidences throughout the entire African-American society. Dealing with the fact that people of color did not have the equal source of possibilities as Caucasian people Dr. King refused to give up faith in a similar education. In Dr. King’s adult years, he gained an exceptional tuition at Boston University, Crozer Theological Seminary, and Morehouse College. He sensed that there was nothing in the world he could not accomplish.

In conclusion, Dr. King believed that love and faith were at the center of the struggle for justice because he wanted to make a positivity difference.

Change is sometimes an unavoidable part of life and Dr. King made sure that change he wanted was optimistic. Dr. King had confidence in God and in the human race that he had the answers to help shift the opinion in millions of individuals. Dr. King sought to influence everyone that violence will not benefit anything, so he used his words and mental strength to expand his method to end segregation and inequality for the new modern world that we live in today.

Moments in Black History and Why Our History Matters The Great Depression was one of the most devastating economic periods of the twentieth century. Between 1929 and the early 1940s, countless American citizens experienced high unemployment rates, increased poverty, and great uncertainty. For black girls and young women, the period created even greater challenges due to the fact that prior to 1929, they were typically employed in the lowest paying jobs within the labor market.

Also, discrimination, marginal education, and growing competition for their already meager wages made circumstances even more difficult for black women during the Depression. Recognizing these unique challenges, prominent civil rights leader Mary McLeod Bethune, and the Negro Affairs Division of the National Youth Administration provided thousands of black girls and women with educational programs and vocational training to prepare them for better job opportunities.

We hear it all the time… “move on, don’t look back, stop talking about the past, slavery doesn’t matter, etc., etc., etc.” Our history is WORLD HISTORY. There is no way to tell the history of man without starting on the continent of Africa. Yet Eurocentric thought would have us believe that we have contributed nothing of value to planet earth. It is unfortunate that too many of us “drink that kool aid” and buy into believing that our accomplishments are limited. We stand in awe of others while placing little if any value on the richness of our African roots, the diverse cultures that birthed us as a people. No other group of people have been made to relinquish their beliefs, customs, mores, culture, the very essence of who we are, in order to exist.

The enslavement of Black people, African people, during the Black Holocaust, stripped us of our sense of self and our connection to our homeland in a way that no other ethnic group has endured before or since.

As we know (or should know) Africa is a continent, Egypt is in Africa and every precious metal, precious stone, precious mineral, most sought-after spices, and essential natural resources are found on the African continent. It is for that reason that invaders have tried to claim it as their own, as the crown jewel of their conquests. The number of people enslaved during the Trans-Atlantic Slave Trade (Black Holocaust) is estimated to be between 9 million to 100 million, with an estimated 20 million dying before reaching their intended destinations. The stron-

gest of the strongest and brightest of the bright, most gifted and talented, scholars and artisans were uprooted and stolen away from their homes and families, never to be seen or heard of again. Those who survived, were separated from everything familiar and forbidden to openly practice their faith or hold on to their cultural identifiers.

Different tribes were intermingled to create confusion and an inability to communicate. Tribes/communities with different languages, customs, value systems and methodologies, were forced to come together in ways that went against the very nature of who we are as a people. Men, women and children were exposed to a level of degradation that we cannot imagine in order to tear us apart and strip us of any shred of dignity or pride as it

related to self and community.

But guess what! We are still here!

We survived! Not only did we survive but we excelled in spite of the obstacles placed before us. We held on to the best parts of our African selves and we became one people, Black people, Africans in America. Our history is beautiful, filled with accomplishments from the Mother Land to this land. Our hand is in the very fabric of what makes America, Land of the FREE, home of the BRAVE. We are inventors, mathematicians, scientists, athletes, artists, fathers, mothers, sisters, brothers, aunts and uncles, cousins and friends. We are creative beyond our own understanding and even when some of us say we don’t believe in “God”, we call on Him/Her to help us get through the muck and mire of racism and discrimination. We are our father’s children, at our best when we let the African self shine through.

“Know thyself “so that you will know that the strength of our people and our community comes in knowing our history from ancient Africa to present day America. Stay Woke.

I would like to end with a bit of information that I find to always be enlightening to my young people.

Utopia

Over the holiday break, I had the opportunity to do just that………break!

What an invigorating feeling it is to focus on rejuvenation, relaxation and meditation. During this time of new found happiness with family and friends, I stumbled upon the movie, “Zootopia.”

I normally do not spend time watching animated movies, but my son (the unofficial narrator) assured me that it was worth the time. I am glad that I did because it gave me a new perspective on life. I love an empowering story line with a happy ending.

As a child, I envisioned a perfect world. It was perfect because I cre-

Read to the children of others. You may be the link that opens the door to success. Above all else, press on, don’t give up and keep the faith. God is the source, we are only the conduit.

ated it. I never liked hearing screaming or loud voices. I am a sensitive being, so I never liked being pulled into games where the players had to tease each other to win. I appreciated the perfect world of no judgement, hatred or selfdoubt. “Zootopia,” made this world come to life for me.

Just like “Zootopia” there is Utopia, a land where my mind traveled to often as I yearned for that perfect community and society. Help make my dreams a reality by exhibiting fruits of the spirit with both friends and strangers alike.

Be the person that pays it forward to the single parent behind you in the

check out line. Be the accountability partner for the small business owner, who finally decides to enhance his business. Be the listening ear to the friend that has made some mistakes, but ready to turn over a new leaf. Be the you that you would want in your own life.

Utopia doesn’t have to be only in our dreams. Like the animals in “Zootopia,” you have the chance to be the change that you wish for your children to encounter, but first you must believe.

When Love Is On Your Mind

By Angie BEE & Bartee February is an exciting and busy month! Having been christened Black History Month it’s also a time for renewal of finances as we pay off our debt from the holidays. February can also be called the “Love Month” where many people observe Valentine’s Day. Nonetheless, what does the month of February mean to you, when you are not African American in the United States, or when you are short on finances as you wait on your income tax refund? What does the month of February feel like to you when you are not in love with someone or you are healing from a broken heart? Do you rejoice that this is the shortest month of the year, or does love blossom in your mind?

On Creflo Dollar’s January 17, 2018 TV broadcast, he states; “The release of your faith will begin to produce admit that every good thing in you is in Christ”. I would like to add that this action of faith also includes love. Love is on the mind of Christ, so if it is on HIS mind, love should be on YOUR mind as well. Refer to the book of Philemon 1:6. Why should love be on your mind? Why should you plant, cultivate, fertilize and protect those seeds of love? Have faith that the love that you currently have on your mind is that seed of faith, and it is an investment in your future.

Well, let us go a bit deeper with this exploration of love. When you were an infant, you loved unconditionally. It did not matter if your parents

were kind to you or verbally abusive, if they were caring, abandoning, capable, or if they inflicted pain, you still loved them. Love was on your mind when you did not even recognize that there was love in your heart and you grew with that love.

That was all that you knew, and it was enough to sustain you.

Later in life, you recognized when you did NOT love something! You “hated” algebra or “loathed” doing chores. You “despised” that girl and her attitude or you “loved” your 13-year old crush. As the love began to bloom in your life, so did the hate. Even after someone broke your heart for the first time, or you were fired from that job that you loved; you recognized the difference between love and hate in your mind.

You believed that you were all alone during that trial, and sometimes those loving parents were there to see you through it, and sometimes they were not. If your parents were your first love and they are not with you during your first heartbreak, then how did you survive? Who held your hand and led you to where you are today? Hmmmm.

There are times when a daughter needs her dad to instill her self-esteem. Scientists and psychologists have studied the effect that dads have on the lives of their children and what happens when those dads are not in the home. Absent-Father Syndrome is real and there are dozens of articles written about it. Just Google it! What happens to a child

when love is on their mind, yet a parent is absent and cannot receive that love? Where does that love go?

When we are children, some of us learned the lyrics to a song and we sang it quite often. “Jesus loves us, this I know; for the bible tells us so...” Did we forget those lyrics as we grew up? We seek “love” in money, relationships, situations and material possessions. Our grandmother “loved that couch”, so we take it into our home and care for it, as she did. “My daddy loved that car” so we invest money to restore it and hang on to the memories that we associate with it. Several of us learned that God would never leave us or forsake us, but we chase after someone that abandoned the relationship with us as if they are all we have in life. The love of Christ is all around us, just like the air we breathe, and we need to keep HIM on our mind, and in our hearts.

In July 2011, I stepped out on faith to introduce young people to the love of Christ. I was lead to launch an evangelism troupe that brought Holy Hip Hop concerts and testimonies to churches and communities. Since that time, The TOUR that Angie BEE Presents has helped to launch Christian radio stations, magazines and blogs, authors, books, ministries, companies, music CDs and videos and organizations. If I had not loved young people, and did not feel that Christ would lead me by HIS love... I would not have been able to launch this ministry. Love was on my mind.

In 2013, Bartee was introduced to, dated, and married a woman that he was initially not attracted to... all in less than six months. Since this union, Bartee has become an author, his musical performance business has enhanced and he is now a motivational speaker, presenting on topics of domestic violence, incarceration and embracing love. He frequently states, “I believe in God and his many blessings. If God offers me a blessing, such as this smart and loving woman, why would I not accept this blessing?” Would he have received these blessings had he not chosen love and marriage for his life? Maybe so, but is his life more rewarding with his “rib” by his side?

You should ask him that question!

Love stays on his mind.

Love is the reason why some of us have the freedoms that we enjoy to-

day. The love of money and a hatred of humanity placed some people of color in bondage and slavery in the United States. The love of people has allowed a nation to change, and grants us the freedom and liberty that we live with today. Love is the reason why an inheritance is offered and Faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen (Hebrews 11:1). You inherited an eternal love that was with you before you were born, and it continues to be with you each day.

Let love bloom in your mind. The love of Christ will lead you, encourage you and satisfy you. Don’t reflect on that thing in the past that happened that hurt you. Do not focus on who or what you don’t have.

Let that blooming love from Christ blossom in your life, and share its sweet fragrance with others. Re-

member that the relationship that you are in is a gift from God, whether that relationship is with a relative, in the workplace or a friendship.

Nurture that relationship! Do not hold anger or bitterness. Be slow to speak and quick to listen (James 1:19) and care for those in your life, as you would like to be cared for.

Give praise for the pain, the challenge, the lack and the uncertainty while knowing that Jesus loves you.

God is your Healer, your Provider and the one that loves you more than you could ever imagine.

Donna Banks-Fresh Books Donna Banks is the Founder and Director of Fresh Books Festival, and she recently celebrated 7 years in January 2018.

Donna wholeheartedly encourages and promotes literacy. Every year Fresh Books continues to grow rapidly. There were more than 32 authors present this year and this includes the MagniďŹ cent Seven.

Word of mouth continues ignite the event, and if you were unable to attend this year, it’s generally held in the month of January. The following interview was conducted

by Theresa Jordan.

Did you ever see yourself as the F.R.E.S.H. Book Festival Director 10-15 years ago?

Not exactly, I knew that I would always be a writer; I just did not know when and how that was going to happen. I have been involved with the literacy of children ever since I can remember. I use to write plays for my friends and everyone had a part and we would give performances on the porch or in my back yard or at Church. So I knew eventually, if my life was spared, that I would be involved in literacy in some way.

Tell us a little about yourself?

I am the middle child of Jackson and Lorraine Gray from Pittsburgh, PA. I have awesome, intelligent and loving brothers and a sister and we grew up on Mulford Street in Homewood, PA. After being born and raised in Pittsburgh and attending Indiana University of PA, I went on to work for the government for approximately 20 years and then moved to Florida to be close to my parents who have both transitioned. I have a Son, Gregory T. Banks he is the blood flow of my life and he has a Father that is truly a man of honor and intelligence James Robert Banks. We are divorced but not strangers.

What inspired you to do something that had not been done before?

I published my first book in 2008 and found that after it was done and all of my friends and family brought the book that I had no idea what to do next. I went to several book events and finally decided to try not to only help myself but to help others. I waited for Spiritual guidance and woke up one morning with F.R.E.S.H. and a blue print on how to put it together.

There is no other explanation for it.

I am deeply humbled that the creator decided that I should be the one to deliver the message of literacy for others and to get others involved.

What was the journey like in the beginning? And was the journey worth it? And what lessons have you learned along the way?

I made all the mistakes, trying to do it all myself, not bringing in stake holders and not getting other people involved.

Big mistake. No man is an island and I learned that the hard way. The journey is continuing and yes well worth it.

For every pi�all there is a revelation of assurance that we can do it better the next time. Literacy is not something that people get really excited about. You have to help them get excited about making sure that our children go to school with a 100,000 word vocabulary and not a 30,000 word vocabulary. It has to be a community effort. So step by step yes the journey is worth it. Anytime I see people reading I get excited and I want others to get excited too.

What inspires you to keep the F.R.E.S.H. Book Festival alive?

Commissioner Paula Reed is my strong hold for the Daytona Beach community. She has been my rock when others said, “What Are You Doing”, she would say “Reading, Writing, Learning” want to help us? All of the sponsors who have been there with us since the beginning, The City of Daytona Beach, Vitas, Deltas (Daytona Beach Chapter), Links, Inc., (The Daytona Beach Chapter), Armstrong Media Group, Bethune Publishing, Parkside Realty, Carolyn Hawkins (Realtor), Gary Yoeman’s Ford, The Daytona Times, Stan Harrison (State Farm), Angie Bee and Bartee Productions, Pepsi, Bethune-Cookman University, Ilasdiamonds, Anthony Armstrong (Visual Artist), Laurence “Blinky” Walden (Artist), Paul Houzell (Artist), Gwendolyn Monroe, Johnnie Mae Chavis, JoJo O’Neal (Star 94.5), Milton McCulloch, Devery Broox II, Amy Alysia and the Soul Operation and last but certainly not least Mr. Percy “Bulldog” Williamson who never takes no for an answer and always tries to find a way to get it done. What is next for the F.R.E.S.H. Book Festival?

F.R.E.S.H. Book Festival tour. We want to put the authors on the road and visit other cities to spread the word about how important literacy is and how important it is to tell our own stories, because if we don’t they become his-tory.

You were not just my husband You were not just my soul mate You were my blessing from God My love you always said, “I gave you strength to go on, and now you have given me strength to carry on.”

You said, “I gave up my life to take care of you and you thanked God for blessing you with me.”

The time I spent with you in my life is priceless. I wouldn’t trade our memories, our life and our love.

You were my “Sugie” and I was your “Sugie” that was our nickname for each other.

You were my Sugie then, My Sugie now and my Sugie, you will always be I Love You Your wife Cassandra a/k/a Ms. Iggy Jones God Bless you my love

A Letter from our Community Corner “A Legacy is established when it touches and reshapes the lives of those le� behind.”

Darrell Graham wrote this letter about Detective Iggy Jones Detective Jones was more than a police officer, he was an honorable man that really cared about our community. He took time out; especially, for the black youths.

He taught us that crime doesn’t pay, and he was like a father.

A father who really believed in us, even though he had to arrest some of us.

He never judged, but he taught respect. Mr. Jones helped by explaining we didn’t have respect for others because we didn’t have respect for ourselves.

This lesson has kept me out of trouble today.

I want to thank God for showing that good is better than evil.

We pray that God protects our American Hero and keeps him safe while he protects us from harm. Just like Martin Luther King, Jr. made a difference in our lives, so did Detective Ignatius Jones, Jr. whom we admire and respect as a person. He cared more about serving and protecting people. Detective Jones would rather put his life in danger everyday just in the hope that we may be protected and safe that’s a man we would like to “Honor” We would like to thank God for Detective Jones and Cassandra Jones for having a positive impact on our lives.

We sometimes don’t get to say what we should, so here it is, “Thank you, for being a community leader that we could be proud of.”

A Letter from his Brothers and Sisters in Blue A note written by Iggy’s son, Ignatius Keith Jones, Jr. I want to thank my father and my mother Cassandra for making me the man I am today! I am a 7-year Veteran in the U.S. Navy.

I hope to retire from the military and become a Law Enforcement Officer just like my father did! I miss you dad and you will always be my “Hero” and I thank you God for my blessings.

We love you dad from the bottom of our hearts!
