International SeaKeepers Society hosts its annual Founders Event

SeaKeepers annual Founders Event will honor the recipients of its SeaKeeper of the Year and NextGen awards, which are given to two individuals that the organization believes have best highlighted the importance of ocean resources.

The International SeaKeepers Society is hosting its annual Founders Event, where it hands out the SeaKeepers of the Year Award and the NextGen Awardee. This year’s event is inspired by navigators and voyagers.

The event is on Wednesday, October 26 at 7 p.m., and will occur during the Fort Lauderdale International Boat Show.

This year’s SeaKeeper of the Year is Nainoa Thompson. Thompson is the President of the Polynesian Voyaging Society, a PWO Master Navigator, and the first Native Hawaiian to practice wayfinding over long distance ocean voyaging since the 14th Century.

Wayfinding is the art and science of ancient non-instrument navigation. Wayfinders use minute observations of stars, waves, clouds, sea birds, and the moon to find their way across hundreds of miles of open ocean without GPS or any other instruments.

Thompson revived this ancient Polynesian art of navigation, dedicating his life to exploring the ocean and maintaining the health of the planet.

Show hours are 10 am to 7 pm through Sat. and 10 am to 6 pm Sun. For more information, visit flibs.com. OCTOBER 27, 2022 NOTABLE EVENTS Fort

He recently completed a four-year voyage around the world on the Hōkūleʻa, double-hulled voyaging canoes. The navigation techniques he developed are now taught in schools throughout Hawaii and the Pacific.

Lehua Kamalu will also be named the NextGen Awardee. Kamalu is the Voyaging Director at the Polynesian Voyaging Society, a non-profit and educational organization that supports the voyages of Hōkūleʻa and Hikianalia.

Kamalu teaches the practice of wayfinding and became the first female to lead-captain and lead-navigate Hōkūleʻa from Hawaii to Tahiti on the Kealaikahiki Voyage. She also became the first female to lead-captain and lead-

navigate a long-distance voyage on the first leg of the Alahula Kai O Maleka Hikianalia California Voyage, a trip of 2,500 nautical miles that goes around the Great Pacific Garbage Patch.

She trained four apprentice navigators from Korea, Okinawa/Japan, French Polynesia, and Hawaii during the voyage. Once she arrived in San Francisco, California Governor Jerry Brown invited her to speak at the Global Climate Action Summit about her journey and her observations of the state of our oceans.

The event also honors leadership in marine conservation and acknowledges members of the DISCOVERY Yacht Fleet.
