What dockmasters wish captains knew before docking

Docking your boat with the help of a dockmaster is something most captains do hundreds of times. Whether it goes smoothly every time is a different story, but these dockmasters share the ways to make sure these interactions always go well.

The work relationship between a dockmaster and a captain is one that should always run smoothly, but that’s not always the case, especially during The Fort Lauderdale International Boat Show. If you’ve ever wondered how to work efficiently with a dockmaster, here are some tips from dockmasters themselves.

Transparency about what your boat

might need before reaching the dock is key for preparation between dockmasters and captains, according to Jennifer Cognet, the dockmaster at Pier Sixty-Six.

“If there is anything they require beforehand, whether it is shore power or boarding requests, we can try and accommodate all those needs before they come,” Cognet said.

Being transparent about the exact length of your boat is also recommended, according to Terry Durante, the dockmaster at Boca Resort Marina. When giving dockmasters the length of your boat, using the waterline length is a huge mistake, according to Durante.

“If they tell me they’re 65 feet and it’s their waterline depth, and let’s say they’re

really like 80 feet, we might be putting you on a sea wall,” Durante said.

Preparation on the dockmasters end is something that makes docking easier, but captains and crew can also complete simple tasks to ready their boat as well. Setting up fenders and lines before backing into a slip might seem obvious, but Durante sees it being forgotten far too often.

“Setting up fenders and lines can easily take over five minutes time of just idling in the slip,” Durante said.

These five minutes might not seem like much, but Durante knows those minutes could cause collisions between neighboring boats if the captain isn’t careful.

The locations of slips is also a topic of discussion between dockmasters and captains, with captains usually wanting to know where they’ll be docking beforehand. Unfortunately, this isn’t something dockmasters usually know

until the day of your arrival.

“We always guarantee your spot, but it can’t necessarily be the one we told you 3 weeks in advance,” Cognet said.

Scheduling is another thing captains should be careful of. It might seem smart to schedule a stay at multiple docks in an area you know you’ll be in and then stay at the one you’re closest to at the end of the night, but cancellations don’t always work out that way.

“We charge them a night stay if they don’t cancel within 48 hours,” said Andy Shell, the dockmaster at Bahia Mar Marina.

Although there are some areas that can improve the relationship between captains and dockmasters, all three dockmasters agreed that the relationship is usually great as is.

“I’ve never got into any arguments or anything like that during my career,” Shell said. “And this is my eighth boat show.”
