After 40 years, four promoters, and six locations, the Palm Beach International Boat Show is now a truly internationally recognized boat show. But it certainly didn’t start that way! In the early 1980s, a small group of us started the Marine Industry Association of Palm Beach County (MIAPBC) in an effort to bring professionalism and credibility to the area’s marine businesses. Meanwhile, in 1982 a small boat show was being privately produced at Soverel Marina, off PGA Boulevard, to bring together some of the local boat dealers. We quickly recognized that our new association needed funding to advance our initiatives and we recognized that owning our own boat show could provide that funding. So, we used our newfound “muscle” and squeezed out the operator of that first boat show and replaced it with our own! Of course, we did not know how to

properly produce a successful boat show, so we found a proper operator, John Good, and we hired him to produce our show for several years. But where to hold it? We knew we needed a better venue for more land exhibit space, and Soverel Marina was not going to cut it. So we moved the show to the 45th Street Jai Lai Fronton, but that was dusty and not real “boaty.” Next stop was the West Palm Beach Auditorium (now a Jehovah Witness Conference Center on Palm Beach Lakes), but that was all indoors and not very inviting, so we moved again. This time it was out west to the South Florida Fairgrounds, but that wasn’t so great, as it was a fairground out west — we were going the wrong way! Eventually we got our act together and determined that since all of those places were land-based, we needed to find a suitable water site. So, we landed at Riviera CONTINUED ON PAGE 3

Beach Marina, where we operated a decent show for a few years until one year, in the late 1980s, the “storm of the century” literally blew the entire show away! It felt to us that we were destined to not have a solid boat show at a solid location. One year, due to “lack of interest” and an economic recession, we actually canceled the show. The Palm Beach Boat show was floundering. Finally, in the mid-1990s, we started to eye the possibility of bringing the show to the downtown West Palm Beach site where we are today — but that would require a much more significant operator who could provide more docks, more tents, and more exhibitors, as well as logistics and permits and staff. So a few of us met with Show Management, the original producers of the Fort Lauderdale International Boat Show (which has since morphed via a couple of acquisitions into Informa, the current producer of the shows). The founder of Show Management, the late Kaye Pearson, was tough and difficult to deal with, but he and his team were excellent at producing successful

boat shows. Kaye wanted nothing to do with our boat show. He called it a “small pissy little local boat show that will never succeed!” We pressed on, nonetheless, assuring them it would be bigger than they thought. Finally, in concert with the city of West Palm Beach, we persuaded Kaye and his team to produce our show on its current site. The first year it was produced in downtown West Palm Beach, 1995, was wildly successful for all involved. Exhibitors, brokers, vendors, and buyers were thrilled. It was the first time that Show Management had ever made money in the first year of a boat show. We had finally found our home and have been here ever since. Today, with only one other cancellation in 2020 due to the pandemic, our boat show has earned global recognition and become one of the top five in the country. It’s also one of the most fun shows for exhibitors and yacht crew alike. Many of us who have been here from the start are thrilled to see what it has become. Who would have known! Enjoy the show!

“Marine Money” conference shares industry insights A strong showing of yacht industry heavyweights gathered Tuesday to discuss all things yachts and money at the “Marine Money” pre-show conference. A vesselsvalue.com presentation showed about 2,800 yachts over 78 feet (24m) currently for sale. A panel of yacht brokers discussed new yacht owners and the need to manage their expectations — from money to crew to boatyards and everything in between. One yacht insurance expert discussed the challenges of towing tenders behind yachts and the risks involved with that (more on this in a future issue of Triton). A wealth expert from Wealth-X provided statistics on the number

of ultrahigh net worth individuals with greater than $30 million, and the 295,000 of them in the world with yacht-buying capabilities. Yacht finance folks talked about the lending processes in place these days to buy those yachts. And finally, a panel of yacht builders including Lurssen,Viking and Westport discussed the backlogs, regulations and issues facing boat builders today. Sprinkled throughout was discussion about the war in Ukraine and the issues surrounding the Russian yachts being seized under sanctions. It was a fact-filled day that primed the crowd for an action-packed Palm Beach International Boat Show week. — Jim Bronstien, publisher
