Golf’s greatest talks yachts By Jim Bronstien

When you attend a lunch to hear from the greatest golf legend of all time, you would think you would hear stories about golf. But not this week. As part of the boat show festivities, about 120 community, business, and industry leaders were honored with some tales from Jack Nicklaus and his son Gary — not tales about golf, but tales about their love of boating and philanthropy. Jack is a first-class yacht owner who also happens to call northern Palm Beach County his home. So it was very fitting to hear him and his son speak of their experiences in boating. Jack and his family are frequent visitors to the Bahamas and many other cruising grounds. They are avid boaters. They

are avid conservationists. They are avid fishermen. And they have a passion for philanthropy. Jack spoke fondly of his move from Ohio to South Florida in the 1960s. Back then the move was prompted not just by the fact that golf was available year-round, but because Jack also quickly discovered that the Palm Beach area’s proximity to Gulf Stream waters generates an abundance of fish. Fishing and golfing became his passions for decades. Jack and Gary reminisced of the many boats their family has had over the years, most with the name Sea Bear etched on the transoms. Jack admitted what all boaters go through: “You always want to get the CONTINUED ON PAGE 3

Golf legend and longtime Palm Beach County resident Jack Nicklaus was joined by his son, Gary, at the show on Friday to talk about yachts they’ve owned and their passion for boating.

next bigger boat.” And that he did, eventually working his way up to 160 feet. All those Sea Bear boats were frequent visitors of the Bahamian waters. His favorite boat? An 80-foot Monterey Sportfish they bought in the ’80s. Repowered and reengineered for a shallower draft during their ownership gave that boat a special place in the Sea Bear chain. These days Jack has downsized his fleet to no more than a couple of Hells Bay flats, but his son Gary has taken on the boat bug. It started at an early age for Gary with a hand-me-down 13-foot Whaler, passed down from Jack to his four kids over the years. Now Gary has built up his own fleet of five boats for himself and his kids. When asked about Jack’s favorite place to go on the water, his answer was quick: “My favorite place is where there are fish.” But over the past several years, Jack and his wife have given up on conventional sportfishing and taken exclusively to fly fishing. “I got tired of the boat catching all the

fish and having the mate do all the work and just handing me the rod to reel,” Jack said. “I wanted to catch my own fish.” And that he does. Contrary to popular belief, Jack rarely plays golf these days. He told the crowd he only played a few times this past year. Instead, he and his wife have shifted their focus over the years to their charitable work and philanthropy, most notably the Nicklaus Children’s Hospital and foundation, which has raised more than $160 million over the years. Gary pursues his own deep passion to protect the waters and the fisheries that have influenced him and his family their entire lives by volunteering his time at the Fish and Wildlife Commission. The Nicklaus family is an amazing group, as close-knit as any family could be. They are active in their community. They are fun. They love boating. And their patriarch is a legend. An incredible combination! Jack’s wife of over 60 years has stated, “The legacy you leave are the hearts you touch.” Needless to say, the Nicklaus family has touched countless lives and will forever be etched in the hearts of millions.
