Through all this, Liz says she has made some very close friends through Tri Sigma, women she would have never met, and it has allowed her to give back to her community.

It’s that time of year again – the holiday season is fast approaching. It’s the most wonderful time of the year! Autumn breezes are beginning to stir and the leaves are starting to fall; the seasons are changing. People seem a little nicer and smile a little more... it’s a time when people seem to express gratitude a little more and realize there is much for which to be thankful.

Recently, I’ve also been reminded there are seasons in life. We remember the childhood years...the high school years... the college years…young adulthood as the “real world” begins...the middle-aged years...the “empty nesters” era and the “golden years.” Through most all of it, there’s a common thread - the gift of sisterhood in Tri Sigma. “Not all sisters are born to us, life saves some for along the way” and thankfully so!

With both of our sons off to college now, I’m thankful my husband and I have each other to experience this new season together. Since the children have been away, there’s an unusual stillness in the air and solitude we’ve not experienced. Although our furry family member misses the boys too, she’s quite content receiving all of the attention. Her company in our newly quiet house is a blessing. I’m also thankful for my Sigma sisters who help to make this “seasonal” transition a little easier.

Sisterhood is a journey; to behold such an experience truly is a gift, and no one knows that better than you, our revered Golden Violets. Each and every day, you are an inspiration - you are shining examples of lifelong wisdom, power that lies within each of us, faith that leads us, hope that guides us, and sisterly love that binds us.

I am thankful that you have influenced my sisterhood journey. In turbulent times such as those we live in today, your steadfast commitment and devotion to Tri Sigma is a reminder that there are constants in the world and not everything in life is disposable. Golden Violets are Tri Sigma’s treasures!

So, as life continues to unfold, it’s nice to reminisce about my Sigma memories and remember so many special sisterhood moments, for it is they that have enriched the ever-changing seasons. I’m sure you experience those opportunities also, and I hope you had an incredible time sharing your stories and making more memories together at the Golden Violet Reunion weekend. Autumn is a lovely time to visit the Shenandoah Valley and I hope you had safe and adventurous travels as you made your way to the Mabel Lee Walton House, our Heart Home.

From your Golden Violet Coordinator

Where does the time go?

When you first became a Golden Violet, did you say to yourself, “Where did 50 years of Sigma sisterhood go?” I was a Junior at Loyola University in New Orleans, having moved from the Northeast where I had lived and started college, so I was 20 years old when I was initiated into the Gamma Eta Chapter. Still being involved in a sorority 50 years later seemed like something very, very far in the future. However, as I have heard from many other Golden Violets, that is not an unusual feeling.

On the opposite side of the spectrum, I have recently had a glimpse of what my oldest granddaughter, Mallory, is feeling.

As a freshman at Louisiana State University, she recently joined Pi Beta Phi Sorority. In all the excitement of making new friends and learning about all their traditions and activities, I’m sure she is not thinking about being a 50-year alumna in that organization. I know that she has seen how much my involvement in, and dedication to Tri Sigma has meant to me.

Unwavering Belief In Sisterhood Unwavering, faithful, dedicated, devoted, and true…as a Golden Violet, you exemplify these characteristics. You are the definition of a steadfast sister.

For fifty years or longer, you have stood by Tri Sigma because of your unwavering belief in sisterhood. It is that same sentiment which guides the Foundation as we give our support and funding to the Tri Sigma experience for members both now and in the future.

Financial health has been a Foundation priority these past two years. It is my hope that we will continue building a Foundation which is capable of providing long-lasting, sustainable support for Tri Sigma. Our Board of Directors and staff remain dedicated to fulfilling our mission through scholarships, leadership development, philanthropy, and service.

As part of our 25th Anniversary celebration last fall, we announced the Steadfast Giving Club to recognize donors who give unrestricted, monthly recurring gifts. Since its inception, more than 100 Sigmas have joined. We are forever grateful for these inaugural members.

For 2018-2019, we are asking sisters like you to join our Steadfast Giving Club and become a devoted part of our Foundation family. As a Steadfast donor, you will be able to reach your philanthropic goals by budgeting manageable, monthly gifts.

It’s through steadfast giving that we can remain true to impacting even more sisters year-round. Your monthly contributions will stretch across all Foundation programs. A Legacy Of Generosity Diana’s story is just one legacy left by a sister who lived by Tri Sigma’s values.

Diana Marie Hunn, Kappa and Omega, died on June 3, 2015 in Dayton, Ohio after a long battle with cancer. She chose to include the Foundation in her estate plans and leave a legacy with Tri Sigma.

When earning her bachelor’s degree in science education at Miami University, Diana joined the Kappa chapter of Tri Sigma. During her lifetime, she served as a teacher, professor and advocate of education. She also dedicated herself as a volunteer and active citizen of her Farmersville, Ohio community.

Tri Sigma remained an important part of Diana’s life. She led the Dayton Area Alumnae Chapter as Chapter President from 2006-2014. She received the Emily Gates Alumna Achievement Award in 1994, The Centennial Women of Distinction Award in 1998, and Alumna Recognition Award in 2012 for her dedication and leadership. Beyond her time and talents, she was a loyal donor to our philanthropy.

Thanks to her planned gift, she has continued to impact our mission over the past three years. Her unrestricted estate gifts have contributed to our funding for Tri Sigma leadership and educational programs, along with ensuring our financial health as a foundation. We hope she would be proud of the work we have accomplished through her generosity.

She volunteers at the World War II Museum in New Orleans in addition to tutoring in her “spare” time.

She served as Recording Secretary and enjoyed several Sigma getaway weekends with her chapter sisters. They were proud to be part of the chapter as it was awarded Chapter of the Year and for contributing the Song of the Year. As an alumna, Sheryl was the founder and driving force behind continuing gatherings at Founders Day. This has become an annual event and has grown to include younger alumnae. Her Alpha Phi sisters acknowledge that she has always been that one person who holds everyone together and is beloved by all: a “perfect example of friendship, character, and conduct.”

Upon graduating, Sheryl married and moved to the Detroit, MI area where she earned her Master’s Degree from Wayne State University and stayed on to work there for a number of years. She was then hired by Michigan State University and moved to East Lansing. Upon retiring in 2013, Sheryl moved to her current home on Little Bradford Lake near Gaylord, MI. Her son and his wife have a small farm nearby, so she has the joy of spending time with her grandchildren.

Sheryl has been an active member of the Central Michigan Alumnae Chapter, serving as President from 20112013 and on the planning committee for Alpha Phi Chapter’s 75th Anniversary. She has also attended several Michigan State Day celebrations. In addition to being active in her church, Sheryl is a Certified Zentangle Instructor and teaches classes at the Gaylord Area Council for the Arts. She is exceptionally gifted in beadwork, making decorative items with a variety of colors and sizes. Sharing her talents and teaching them to others is a gift Sheryl gives every day. She truly embodies “to receive much, you must give much.”

Now that she is retired, Liz and her husband, Fred have traveled around the world and to all 50 United States. When she is at home in Phoenix, AZ, she volunteers weekly at St. Mary’s Food Alliance, the first food bank in the country. She and Fred are dedicated fans of the Arizona Diamondbacks baseball team. Her daughter, Lynette, was the Honor Alumnae Initiate at the 2001 Convention in Tampa. Presently there are two legacies in the family: granddaughters Ava (13) and Claire (10), who attended Founders Day last year with Lynette, and both have said that they want to come back again another year. When asked what she has learned from her experience in Tri Sigma, Liz shares her feeling that “through philanthropy and friendship, everyone brings something to the team and dedication to a big cause.” Now she has being a Golden Violet to add to her extremely fulfilling experience in our sisterhood.

Each year, Liz serves as a mentor at Dunham Women of Character Institute for a small group of emerging leaders.
