Welcome to one of the cleanest towns in Texas. Many of the Czech and German family descendants still live in Weimar and are some of the friendliest people in Texas.

HISTORY OF WEIMAR

DEEP ROOTS

Historical Weimar, Texas COMMUNITY FINDS THEIR PLACE ON THE MAP IN 1873, CONTINUES MOVING FORWARD TODAY Centrally located on Interstate 10 and US 90 between San Antonio, Austin, and Houston, Weimar is a friendly community founded by mostly Czech and German descendants. Weimar was founded in 1873 when it was discovered that the Galveston, Harrisburg and San Antonio Railway was going to be constructed through the area. The town was first named Jackson, after D. W. Jackson, a native Georgian who donated land for the railroad and town site. The name Jackson didn’t stick and the majority promptly chose the name Weimar. An early account says that resident Thomas W. Pierce visited Weimar, Germany, and was favorably impressed, passing on encouragement to others that their new town should be it’s namesake. The Weimar post office was established in 1873 and was incorporated in 1875. Weimar started with only a few hundred people but grew to over 1,000 residents in only ten years. It would soon be known far and wide for pecans, dairy, and poultry products. The Weimar Mercury, the first town newspaper that still

exists today, was established in 1888. Industry and agriculture continue to dominate the area today. Weimar was well known for leading the area in sheet-metal works, oil field gasket manufacturing, feed, poultry, corn, pecans and beef. The former GH&SA railroad remains in service today as part of the Union Pacific Railroad system. A strong history of baseball exists in Weimar. Veterans Park - Strickland Field was ahead of its time when it was built in 1948, and was the first lighted baseball field between San Antonio and Houston. Veterans Park remains a state-of-the-art Top left, Weimar Bandstand baseball stadium, having hosted a Babe Ruth 1930; top right, Post Office League World Series Tournament in 2005. Must see sites in Weimar VISITORS WILL WANT TO EXPERIENCE ALL OF THESE WEIMAR GEMS The Weimar Golf Course offers members and guests, at a reasonable price, a golfing experience second to none in the area. The course is a pleasure to play for golfers of all skill levels. Ranked 17th of the best 9-hole courses in Texas. The pro shop and maintenance staff are friendly, knowledgeable, and committed to helping all golfers have a pleasureable experience. Weimar’s golf club is a short, well-maintained course that features one lake and a good amount of trees. The course rating is 34.0 and it has a slope rating of 115 on Bermuda grass. It features 3,041 yards of golf from the longest tees for a par of 36. Weimar’s golf course opened in 1940. The Weimar Golf Course can be reached at 979-725-8624 for more information. The course is located at 1481 US-90 in Weimar and open Tuesday through Sunday, 8 a.m. until sunset. They are closed onNational holidays, Christmas Day, Thanksgiving Day and Easter morning. Weimar’s railroad heritage is evident with the library occupying the old depot and with the Southern Pacific caboose that proudly stands in front of the entrance. The caboose was #1888 in the Southern Pacific line. It is constructed of steel and boasts a bay window. It was built in June 1972. In a bay window caboose, the crew monitoring the train sits in the middle of the car in a section of wall that projects from the side of the caboose. The bay window gained favor with many railroads because it eliminated the need for additional clearances in tunnels and overpasses. Although no longer used today, caboosees were manned North American railroad cars coupled at the end of freight trains. Cabooses provided shelter for crew at the end of a train, who were formerly required in switching and shunting, keeping a lookout for load shifting, damage to equipment and cargo, and overheating axles. They were phased out in the 1980s due to changes in requlations. The caboose in Weimar is located at One Jackson Square.

Players enjoy a round of golf at the Weimar Golf Course.

St. Michael the Archangle Catholic Church is located at 410 North Center Street and is a popular destination among those interested in history and architecture. Established as a Mission in 1888, by Father Edward Brucklin, who became first resident priest in 1892. An earlier frame structure was replaced by this stately sanctuary in 1913, under direction of Father Joseph Szymanski (1873-1948), who served the congregation for 42 years. The imposing edifice was constructed of Elgin brick by Italian and Mexican craftsmen directed by contractors L. M. and J. C. Dielmann of San Antonio. The Gothic revival architectural style reflects the central European heritage of the Czechoslovakian and German settlers. Visitors are also welcome to stay for Mass at St. Michael the Archangel Catholic Church in Weimar. The worship times of all churches in the Weimar area can be found on page 37 for this publication. The Weimar Public Library provides free services to residents living within the city and the surrounding counties, free of charge. The library has over 13,000 library items and other services including books, E-books, DVDs, audiobooks on CD, six public com-

A rare sight in Texas, this Sothern Pacific caboose stands outside the entrance of the Weimar Public Library.

The Weimar Public Library is located at One Jackson Square and online at weimarpubliclibrary.org. They can be reached by phone at 979-7256608 and via email at weimarpubliclibrary@gmail.com. Located at 125 East Main Street, the Heritage Society Museum is open Wednesdays from 2 to 4 p.m. and Saturdays from 10a.m. to 4 p.m. Admission is free and group tours are available on other days. Call 979725-8203 or 979-725-8478 for more information. Housed in the Old Hill Bank building, the Heritage Society Museum of Weimar focuses on exhibits tracing the city’s history, beginning with the original land grant from the Spanish government to Henry Austin in 1831. Surveying tools and personal effects of Weimar’s founder, D.W. Jackson, are displayed.

St. Micahel the Archangel Catholic Church is a fine example of gothic revival architecture, built in 1913.

The Main Street area of the museum gives a fascinating glimpse of life into Weimar’s early days. Strolling down “the street,” visitors can view a doctor’s office with a full-size skeleton on a stand beside an old-fashioned examining table. In view is an amputation kit and a wooden leg belonging to Peg-Leg Strunk, an early area rancher. A dentist office, department store, bank, blacksmith forge, a facsimile of the old Mercury newspaper printing shop, and a barber shop and beauty salon make up the museum’s Main Street. The Military Room features uniforms and G.I. memorabilia from World War I, World War II, the Korean War, the Vietnam War, and the Persian Gulf conflict. Among the most unusual items is a water-cooled machine gun from WWI and Nazi banners from WWII. There’s even a Civil War cannonball that was unearthed east of town. The Military Room’s exterior wall holds Weimar’s Veteran Roll, which lists area residents who have served in the United States Armed Forces.

Weimar Public Library is located at One Jackson Square and is free to both adults and children alike.

The pharmacy exhibit is most impressive. An inlaid majolica tile soda fountain from the old Farmer’s Drug Store greets visitors to this section. One can easily imagine enjoying a long-ago Saturday afternoon with a cool fountain drink or scoop of ice cream. Pharmaceutical items, housed in original drug store cabinets and cases, include remedies and patent medicines such as Doctor Thatcher’s Liver and Blood Syrup and Grandma’s Household Remedies. Prohibition-era prescriptions for alcohol, written in 1924 for a man and his wife prompt comments about “medicinal uses” of spirits.

Explore Weimar’s Parks THE CITY OF WEIMAR WELCOMES EVERYONE TO THEIR MUNICIPAL PARKS By Michelle Banse Stokes Photos by Lydia Ford, Lori Olivarez-Ligues and Crystal Barrow 9 | WEIMAR, TEXAS

WIDE OPEN SPACES

City parks and open spaces improve our physical and psychological health, strengthen our communities, and make our cities and neighborhoods more attractive places to live and work. Weimar’s abundance of outdoor spaces is a boon for both visitors and residents alike, and a source of pride for Weimar Mayor Milton Koller. “When the master plan we put together for the community came out, the priority for folks was recreation for the youth,” said Koller. “Give them some place to go, something to do. And it was number one on our list.” HILL MEMORIAL PARK Hill Memorial Park encompasses softball fields, wooded walking trails that are ADA accessible, sand volleyball courts, a playscape, and a nine-hole golf course that is ranked 17th of the best nine-hole courses in Texas. Soon, thanks to a generous land donation by Dr. Ken Yoder, it will connect with the soccer fields northwest of the golf course. “Mike Barrow, our city manager, has put together a plan to connect the entire complex,” shared Koller. “This would connect the soccer fields with the rest of Hill Memorial Park. We also have our Economic Development Committee putting together a project that would upgrade all of the recreational areas in town, including Hill Memorial Park. We want to add lights and benches to the walking trails and add three additional little league or softball fields. Plans are underway to add a playscape for the smaller kids, a large pavilion, concession stands, restrooms and a new parking lot. It will be a big, big asset to the community.” Hill Memorial Park is located at 1481 US-90 in Weimar. MUNICIPAL PARK With a brand-new state-of-the-art swimming pool, complete with splashpad, in place at Municipal Park, the facility has been more popular than ever with both kids and adults alike.

Top, plans are in place to upgrade the playground at Municipal Park, above. Middle and left, families enjoy the new pool and splashpad at Municipal Park in Weimar.

WIDE OPEN SPACES “We’ve upgraded the pool and added the splashpad,” added Koller. “We also made a little party area and closed off the street in front to make it safer for the kids. There are picnic areas down by the creek, across the street from the pool. There is currently a project going to refurbish the playground equipment and groundcover. The gravel that is currently there is going to be removed and we are replacing with a cleaner, safer artificial surface.” Municipal Park is located at 106 West Market Street in Weimar. FUTURE PLANS Koller, proud of the progress Weimar is making with the city parks, is eager to look ahead and talk about Weimar’s future plans. “The kids are our future,” said Koller. “Our goal is to get them outside and keep them active. We also want to bring more people to Weimar, to either visit or relocate. For example, we have teams that will enter little league softball tournaments here, if we had the facilities, but instead they are now playing in another community. If we could enhance our facilities, we could host tournaments in softball, soccer, volleyball, baseball … even outdoor basketball tournaments. Another benefit is that it would bring business into town and boost our economy while having a place for kids to do outdoor activities. Improving our parks is a win-win for everyone.” For more information on Weimar’s parks, visit weimartexas.org.

WEIMAR’S HOTSPOT

A “UNIQUELY TEXAS” WINERY

Whistling Duck Vineyards & Winery CAREFUL BLENDING OF NATURE, FINE WINE, FRIENDLY TEXAS HOSPITALITY, AND A TRANQUIL COUNTRY SETTING by Michelle Banse Stokes, photos by Lydia Ford Whistling Duck Vineyards and Winery began with John and Kari Cooke and Stan and Mary Beth Johnson, who started with 50 vines in 2007. Today, those 50 vines have grown to cover over four acres. The Cooke’s and Johnson’s have worked very hard at creating wines that draw in guests from all around the area - and the word is spreading fast. Whistling Duck is reacting to their growth by expanding to offer their guests an unparalleled experience when visiting this quaint, country winery that is located just far enough off the beaten path.

12 | WEIMAR, TEXAS

WEIMAR’S HOTSPOT

One of our goals is that we want people to feel like part of our family.

“We have a brand-new tasting room,” shared John. “There’s a lot more indoor seating with a very nice view of the vineyard and massive fans to keep everyone nice and cool. We’ve also taken our original tasting room and turned that into indoor seating for those who prefer air conditioning.” With the future always in mind, John already has plans for even more expansion in the near future. “So, surprise! When we opened the new building Memorial Day weekend, people commented that we probably didn’t build it big enough,” laughed John. “We’re seeing that now. We have plans for an additional covered area, canopies, and extending the roofline of the new tasting room to allow for more covered seating. We’re always adapting for our guests.” And although it’s the outstanding wine that keeps guests coming back, it’s also the consistent flow of entertainment that they find at The Duck, an affectionate moniker given by their fans. “We do have live music every Saturday,” said John. “We try to book a variety of musicians. Some have become fan favorites, but we try not to repeat a band for two to three months. We also have First Friday where we do live music and we’ve started adding music on special weekends, as well. We have certain food events. Every Thursday is Pizza Night and we’ve started a new event called Triple D at The Duck. It’s dinner, dancing and drinks, and we’re looking to do that quarterly. We want it to be a nice date night for folks. We’re also bringing back Dining in the Vines, an annual event that sells out fast.” Whistling Duck offers several delicious appetizer and meal selections from their kitchen and frequently offers different selections, including visits from popular food trucks. Guests are also welcome to amble down to the pond for a glimpse of some wildlife or fragrant wildflowers, sit under the large oak trees dotting the property, or take a stroll through the vineyard to witness where their wine began. And don’t think you have to leave the family at home. “Remaining kid and pet friendly is important to us,” said John. “One of our goals is that we want people to feel like part of our family. We welcome kids to roam around a little bit and even allow them to bring their fishing poles and fish in our stocked pond. Parents can watch from the porches, with a glass of wine in hand, while they are fishing. We want everyone to sit back, relax and enjoy the laid-back and fun atmosphere of this little piece of the Texas countryside.” Whistling Duck Vineyards and Winery is located at 1211 County Road 273 and online at www.whistlingduckwinery.com.

FUN & ADVENTURE

A WALK ON THE WILD SIDE

Hatari Wildlife Park WEIMAR’S WILDLIFE DESTINATION OFFERS EXPERIENCE LIKE NO OTHER by Michelle Banse Stokes, photos by Lydia Ford Not to be confused with the famed 1962 John Wayne movie Hatari!, Weimar’s own Hatari Wildlife Park opened their doors in August of 2020. Built from the ground up with a strong desire to get families back outdoors, founders and brothers, Dean and Ron Robicheux, originally had other intentions for their newly acquired parcel of land. “I moved to Columbus five years ago while getting ready to retire from the oil field business,” said Dean. “My brother and I wanted to open a business developing and selling land. We heard about this particular piece and bought it with the intent to develop it. It was so exceptional, so beautiful, we fell in love with it. We had this idea to build a wildlife park and travelled all around the country looking at different ones and getting ideas. We knew our land was prettier and more conducive to building a park than any other place we’d seen. We started working on it a couple of years back and here we are today.”

16 | WEIMAR, TEXAS

FUN & ADVENTURE

All families need to get back into the outdoors and we plan to develop Hatari in that direction.

Touring multiple wildlife parks gave the Robicheux’s the ability to put practices into place that would allow Hatari to stand out from the pack. “We don’t utilize small cages,” shared Dean. “Our animals are running free and interacting with each other in their own unique environments and habitats over four separate ranges. We have the Dunes that is rocky and arid, Lower Grasslands Range that is like the African savannah, Sahel which is a transition in Africa between the Sahara and the Sudanian savanna where our giraffes reside, and Lowland Forest where you’ll find a swampy, forested area. In the Lowland Forest area, you can walk among the animals along a three-quarter mile elevated wooden boardwalk for a unique experience unlike any other.”

Connecting with families, especially children, is important to the Robicheux family and they plan to continue to expand with lodging, hiking and additional healthy, outdoor activities. “We’ve recently had some children with disabilities out at the park and I’m proud that we were able to accommodate their needs,” added Dean. “Seeing the smiles on their faces was very rewarding. All families need to get back into the outdoors and we plan to develop Hatari in that direction.” Hatari Wildlife Park is located at 1145 CR 218 in Weimar or online at HatariPark. org.

WEIMAR’S PASTTIME

ROOT FOR THE HOME TEAM

Take Me Out to the Ballgame AN INTERVIEW IWTH TOM STRICKLAND AND LARRRY “BEAR” KANA BY MICHELLE BASNE STOKES PHOTOS BY LORI OLIVAREZ-LIGUES

Tom Strickland and Larry “Bear” Kana converged in my office to talk about their favorite subject – baseball. I watched in amazement as they transformed before my eyes into grinning little boys – excited to talk about their favorite pastime with passion. Weimar Veterans Memorial Park – Strickland Field and the Weimar Vets baseball team that calls the historic ballpark home, are close to their hearts for all the right reasons – small town pride, homeruns, foul balls, cold beer, peanuts, and a cheering crowd rooting for their home team. “Our field has a lot of history,” said Tom. “It was the first lighted field between Houston and San Antonio, built in 1948. I’ve been involved since 1976. I’m obsessed with the field and baseball. Always have been.

Above, Tom Strickland and Larry ‘Bear” Kana share a smile while reminiscing over basball, their favorite pasttime.

“When I came in ’76, I was a baseball coach and after eight years of doing that, it was hard to just pull the roots out. The very first fall when I was ushered down to the baseball field with the high school, former players asked me to do my best with it. I said that I would spend whatever I made back on the field. That’s when I came up with ways to make money and the rest is kind of history.” With a strong connection to veterans stemming from being a child of a military family, Tom and his wife maintained several close friendships with veterans over the years. Being a part of a baseball field honoring veterans was an easy choice for him.

“In all honesty, it repays me much more than anything else. The last ten years or so I’ve kind of called it my fountain of youth. Every time somebody from out of town comes in, they say, ‘We weren’t expecting this in this little bitty town!’ Kids walk around in amazement and coaches go around with their phones when they first get there and take pictures. One time I overheard a young man Dad, Dad! You on a phone call with his father, ‘Dad, Dad! You have to come have to come to to the game today. You have to come see this field! Hurry!’”

the game today. You have to come see this field! Hurry!

“And they kind of put the ball and chain around my neck when they put my name on it in 2001,” shared Tom with a grin. “It’s usually when you’re dead and gone when they do something like that, but I guess they did it, obviously, to honor me. In the long run, it’s like I can’t go away and let it all fall into pieces as long as I’m capable of doing it, so I kind of have a goal of at least 50 years. I’ve got another five maybe if I make it!

Lots of baseball players from Weimar have gone on to play in the Big Leagues; too many to mention in this short article. The field’s ten minutes of fame came in 2010 when the movie Everybody Wants Some filmed several scenes at Strickland Field.

“It was wonderful,” shared Tom. “They came for a whole week and did all the prep work. They put new billboards over the existing ones on the bleachers and renamed it Southwest Texas College. And then, the next week, they were all gone,

WEIMAR’S PASTTIME and a new crew came back in and cleaned it all up, putting everything back to normal. Well, almost.” Bear, as the locals know him, has been coaching the Weimar Vets baseball team since 2018, when they won the Community League Championship. “I’m like Tom I grew up with baseball,” said Bear. “I started putting a team back together with me as the coach. I talked to the guys over a beer, and I said, ‘Fellas, y’all want to play with Weimar Vets again?’ because they were all playing in different community leagues. I told them, ‘Well, I’ll manage if y’all want to play’ so we got a bunch of kids together and got in the league.” Filled with determination and his love of baseball, Bear plans to continue managing his team, right at home in Weimar. “As long as I’m around, we’re going to play baseball on Strickland Field,” added Bear. “As long as there’s young men willing to play, I can do it. Weimar Vets have been around since the 60s. What else is there to do on Saturday and Sunday? I do it because I love the game. My first baseball field was a sand pasture in Holman, Texas. Me and my brother played against each other. When we were in Little League, almost every day we were at Shaver Field, unless we had a game. Then we were at someone’s house trading baseball cards and rode our bikes to the swimming pool. It was all flashbacks for me when I saw The Sandlot.” I was curious, so I asked Bear if he still collected baseball cards today.

Top, The Weimar Vets baseball team honors former player Pete Stavinoha with family members throwing out the first pitch; middle, the mural outside of the field honors area veterans; bottom, local veterans, along with Kana, pose next to the monument on the field recognizing all men and women of the Weimar VFW Post #5875 and the Weimar American Legion Post #0259.

“We only collected baseball cards because we were looking for the gum,” he said with a laugh. “Our best baseball card collections, probably thousands of dollars, went into our bicycle spokes. You remember that? You put them on with a clothespin. No telling how many Willie Mays, Mickey Mantles, Nolan Ryan and all that went into the spokes.” Weimar Veterans Memorial Park – Strickland Field and the Weimar Vets baseball team can be found at the intersection of North College and West Huvar Street in Weimar. Admission to the Weimar Vets games are free, but purchases of beer, snacks and snow cones from the concession stand is highly encouraged. Say “hi” to Tom and Bear while you’re there and, if you’re lucky, you can talk the team into signing a baseball for you like the one that sits in my office.

CALENDAR OF EVENTS

ALWAYS MOTHER’S DAY WEEKEND

Gedenke! Festival A PARADE, LIVE MUSIC, VENDORS, GAMES, BBQ CCOK-OFF, FAMILY FUN ... AND SO MUCH MORE! PHOTOS BY THOUSAND WORDS PHOTOGRAPHY Loosely translated from German, the word gedenke means think of or remember; thus the festival is held in hopes local residents will remember their hometown and attend the festival. The festival includes games for all ages, a biergarden, several live bands, a parade, arts and crafts, a barbecue cook-off, and a 5k fun run/walk. There is no charge for admission or parking. Our beloved festival grew from the combination of several local festivals and is now the city’s main celebration each year on Mother’s Day weekend. One of the first annual celebrations in Weimar was the Cucumber Carnival, held in 1940 and 1941. The Texas Pickle Company operated in Weimar for over 30 years and, at one time, over 300 acres of cucumbers were planted in the immediate area. The Cucumber Carnival was an all-day celebration that featured a parade, bathing beauty contest and queen coronation, among other activities. The festival was cancelled in 1942 due to

the outbreak of World War II and was never held again. In 1973, Mrs. Betty Seifert chaired a committee that planned and successfully celebrated the city’s centennial. While the festival was a great success, it was not continued in future years. However, for several years in the late 1970s and early 1980s, the Lions Club held a celebration on Post Office Street complete with carnival rides and games. In addition to the Lions Club, the Weimar Garden Club began the Jackson Square Festival as a means to raise money for landscaping around the new Gazebo. The ladies invited various local organizations to sell everything from homemade ice cream to sausage-on-a-stick. Although it was a successful fundraiser, the festival lacked a proper carnival. The answer was to combine the Lions Club carnival with the Garden Club’s festival and christen it Gedenke!
