DEEP ROOTS

Historical Moulton, Texas

COMMUNITY FINDS THEIR PLACE ON THE MAP IN 1836, LONG BEFORE CITY WAS INCORPORATED IN 1937

There was no organized settlement in the beginning. Separate families lived throughout the region in isolated cabins, each working the land they owned. Further settlement came to an abrupt halt in October 1835 with the “Come and Take It” Battle at Gonzales. People who lived in what was to become the Moulton area got caught up in the Texas Revolution as did most AngloAmericans living in Texas. Soon after the Alamo fell, General Sam Houston abandoned Gonzales and burned the town so as to leave nothing of value for the Mexicans.

On March 15, 1836 part of the Texas Army camped on the East Fork of the Lavaca River. Today a State monument on the present site of the American Legion Hall marks the approximate site. They only camped there for a short time, just long enough for a small black slave boy of six years to meet and speak with General Houston. That young slave, Mose Chappel, later went on to become one of Moulton’s oldest and most unforgettable citizens.

No one knows exactly how the settlement actually got its name. One theory suggest that the community received its name from a native of Moulton, Alabama, who named it after his hometown. Another suggests that the community was named after E. L. Moulton, a pioneer settler. Yet another says the settlement was named after the small circular patches of oak trees called “motts”

that abound the region.

In 1887 the San Antonio and Aransas Pass Railroad Company laid out a spur from Yoakum northward to Waco. Soon after the construction of the railroad, a depot was built on the west side of the tracks and was called Topeka. Soon the little depot became the economic center of the area. In 1887 the first business opened in Moulton was a general store owned by Ed Boehm with later additions that also housed a saloon, barber shop and the post office.

To handle the large influx of people arriving in the growing community during this period, the Samuel Moore family built the large 32-room Moore Hotel in 1888. The hotel operated until 1940 when it was demolished to make way for a new business, the Pundt’s Café that was later remodeled into the current Kloesel’s Steakhouse and Bar.

Geographically speaking, Moulton lies in the heart of South Central Texas along the border of the Post Oak Belt and Gulf Coastal Plains. Moulton straddles the East and West Forks of the Lavaca River with most of the acreage within the city limits perched atop a slight rise between these two streams. Farming became the area’s main commercial enterprise.

Sam and Will Moore Institute’s name honors brothers who gave site and half costs of building; the community matched their donation. The architect was H. Struve and the building contractors were Joel Meyer & Co. The Order of Sons of Hermann laid cornerstone July 31, 1901, in a gala celebration including a parade, band concert, barbecue, ball, and orations in English, German, and Czechoslovakian. The North wing was added in 1923.

After laying the cornerstone on July 31, 1901, a great party ensued. The City Band and the Lone Star Band opened the festivities at 10 a.m. for an estimated crowd of 5,000 enthusiastic celebrants. After a long parade, 21 head of cattle and several sheep were barbecued and 81 kegs of beer were consumed. A dance lasting until 2 a.m. concluded the celebration. A newspaper account of 1901 stated that enrollment the first year as 170. Today, the historic building still houses Moulton Independent School District students. Sam and Will Moore Institute is located at 400 Bobkat Drive.

A historical marker located at the downtown gazebo recognizes Adolph Hofner (1916-2000) for his role as a pioneer of western swing music. He was the first to record the classic Cotton-Eyed Joe in 1941.

Kloesel’s Steakhouse & Bar was born out of a love for good food and the desire to offer it to the people of Moulton. It all began when freshly married Harvey and Diana Kloesel moved to Houston in the late 1960s. Diana’s aunt and uncle Ducho owned a restaurant there, which she worked at during high school. Her exposure to the industry quickly became an interest that she and Harvey shared and they loved going out to eat together as often as they could.

Fifty-two years later, Kloesel’s Steakhouse & Bar has made a name for itself so noteworthy it has played a large part in putting the small town of Moulton, Texas on the map. Located between the railroad tracks and Highway 95 at 101 East Moore Avenue, the building’s historic roots are still serving its community today.

Visitors will find Old Moulton Cemetery by taking FM 1680 one mile northwest, then continuing south on Old Moulton Cemetery Road for a mile.

The historical marker reads: Although local oral tradition holds that there may be older interments, the earliest documented grave in this cemetery is that of Louisa Lattimer (1842-1857). Early settlers Robert H. and Eliza J. McGinty deeded some land for cemetery use. Those interred here include Lavaca County pioneers; former slaves; a large number of children; victims of 19th-century diseases and epidemics; and veterans of the Texas Revolution, the Civil War, World War I, World War II, Korea, and Vietnam. Of the hundreds of graves in the Old Moulton Cemetery, many remain unmarked.

Wondering what a visit to Rocky Creek Maze might be like? Well, just imagine wandering along more than 2.5 miles of paths in a eight-acre field of tall corn, trying to find your way through a giant puzzle!

In total darkness, stumble your way through the Haunted Trail and prepare yourself for a monstrous adventure. IN THE HEART OF MOULTON

SOUTHSTAR BANK SOUTHSTAR BANK

LOCAL SPOTLIGHT
Liliana Hinojosa, photogrphy by Emily Henderson

SouthStar Bank has been a Moulton institution for over 103 years.

It was founded in Moulton, where its headquarters remain ‘till this day, and has since expanded out to 17 other locations around Killeen, Brazoria, College Station, Kerrville and Austin.

David Kapavik, Bank President, took over in 1995.

Originally a FDIC bank examiner, Kapavik used to examine the same bank in the 80s. When the former president retired, they called up Kapavik to interview for the job and the rest is history!

He relocated from Austin and knew Moulton would be the perfect place to raise a family. It was also the perfect opportunity for them to move to a smaller community and run a bank. “When you step in this bank, you feel like you’re in the early 1900s,” David said.

The Southstar Bank building was once a mercantile store and was remodeled during its 100 year anniversary, keeping the original bones of the old building with tin ceilings and long pine floors.

“Not only did they provide supplies for the consumer, but also

they sold feed to the farmers and helped market and broker their crops,” David said, in reference to the mercantile store. “At the time they even had their own coins and tokens that they would give in exchange for buying the crops and they could use them in the store!”

The bank has organically grown and does business nationwide out of Moulton by “just taking care of customers,” and its headquarters have no plans of leaving this tiny Texas town.

“From a bank perspective, it’s where our original charter started. And a lot of times, people will move it into a bigger city. I office out of Moulton still,” David said. “I’m the president of the bank. This is our headquarters, I don’t have any intentions of changing it. It’s where I have very, very good staff from Moulton that we’ve built up from many years of selecting the best people around the area and I’ve got quality staff here to be able to manage the headquarters.”

“You can go to the city and find all these people, but what we found is that in a small community you have the work ethic, the loyalty, and just good people that you can depend on,” he continued.

“Although we get a lot of business from our city branches as well, it’s a nice blend of being able to operate a lot of our administrative offices and offer jobs to these smaller towns and draw business from other areas.”

WE’RE INVOLVED IN ANYTHING AND EVERYTHING

“We’re really true to our roots, we put our roots in deep. Not just the bank itself, but in employees,” he said. “We’ve had employees who’ve worked for the bank for almost 50 years. So we get that stability, we get that long term relationship. We are not a bank that plans to sell out. We’re gonna remain a strong community bank.”

The Bank is heavily involved in the community. “We’re involved in anything and everything,” David laughed. “The community bank pretty much supports everything that goes around. Whether it’s the stock show, the local jamboree, the churches … we’re just the heart of the community. We do everything we can to ensure financial stability, as well as the education and strength of our community.”

“We have shareholders that are well invested not only in the bank, but in the community and want to continue doing this,” he continued. “Our bank is just so very strong and it’s because we have great customers and great team members and great shareholders and we are just very blessed! We’re committed to our team members and they are committed to the bank ... it’s just a great place to be.”

When asked if there was anything else he wanted to share with me, he had a message for Moulton: “I just want to thank the community for supporting this for 103 years and we plan to be here 103 years plus more,” he said. “I’m blessed to be able to say we’re able to do this and we’re proud of Moulton and proud to be here. Moulton has been the start of our success and we just duplicated that formula - just great people serving our customers. And it works - everywhere!”

“My financial service is Texas style and that’s who we are - a Texas bank!”

It’s always a good time in Moulton

In the small town of Moulton in Lavaca County, Texas, there are a variety of local hangouts that are slowly becoming town favorites as the years go on.

Pavlas Tavern on 114 Main St, is an “Old Tyme Tavern run by Willie Pavlas with Aunt Vlasta’s approval,” as quoted on their Facebook group that frequently posts specials, videos of patrons dancing, and events.

“Our Facebook page keeps people updated on any events we’re having,” Willie shared. He purchased the tavern from his Aunt Vlasta and Uncle George in July of 2018 and has focused on keeping the family tradition going since. Willie has kept it as original as possible, with its wood-carved barback and an old-school jukebox.

At least once a month, they bring in different local bands and musical acts for their patrons to enjoy.

MOULTON, TEXAS | 14 LOCAL HANGOUTS

MOULTON IS A WONDERFUL TOWN WITH WONDERFUL PEOPLE

On other nights, locals wander into the bar to see friendly faces, play some pool or enjoy a cold beer after a long day’s work.

“We’re a family-oriented business that caters to our customers,” Willie said. “Any event going on, I usually donate to it – the community has been good to us. We want to continue to have a place that people can come to and enjoy themselves. Cash only, no smoking, a simple country tavern.”

Ole Moulton Bank, located at 101 North Main Street in downtown Moulton, offers old-time charm and a place to relax for locals and visitors alike.

This Texan tavern is owned by Jim Mendenhall, who discovered the historic structure by chance while on a search for an escape from the hustle and bustle of big city life.

“I got tired of Houston and started looking for someplace out of town to start a little business,” Jim said.

He owned a guitar shop in Houston for 22 years and brought a multitude of vintage guitars with him to Moulton as well as his love for live music and entertainment. The once functional bank turned “bank” quickly became a hangout for musicians.

“We had live music for the first three years and then that grew into a jam on Thursday nights for local players,” he shared.

Now Thursdays are their most popular nights. “Moulton is a wonderful town with wonderful people,” Jim added. “I love it here. Nothing’s going to change at Ole Moulton Bank. I’ve been here since 2001 and I love the area. I love going to my own bank.”

LOCAL HANGOUTS

If you are searching for another place to have a great time, head on down to Kloesel’s Steakhouse & Bar on 101 E W Moore Avenue. Harvey and Diana Kloesel opened their restaurant in July of 1970 inside a small cafe next door to the Moulton Post Office and later moved to their current, historic location on Moore Avenue where a historical marker designates Kloesel’s Steakhouse as the site of the Moore Hotel.

The Moore Hotel, built by Samuel Moore in 1888, one of the original founders of Moulton, was demolished in 1940. After the demolition, the owners built a grocery store and meat market in its place using lumber from the original building. Thirty years later, the Kloesels remodeled the building into the steakhouse that you see today.

“The restaurant business is a wonderful business,” Harvey Kloesel said. “To make people happy just makes me happy.”

In addition to their delicious dishes, Texas sized portions and variety of desserts, Harvey and Diana offer a welcoming atmosphere in a historic setting that keeps the patrons from all over the Lone Star State coming back time and time again.

“We serve only choice premium cuts of aged beef, which Harvey personally selects, cuts trims and cooks to perfection,” Diana said. “We also serve a variety of pasta, seafood, chicken, Tex-Mex dishes, salads, and sandwiches. We also have pies, a variety of cheesecakes and other delicious desserts.”

The historic building has since been renovated to include three dining rooms, a bar with a dance floor, including DJ and karaoke music and pool tables, and a front porch with large outside deck seating.

Our final local hangout feature is Bryan’s Daily Treat located at 109 S Lavaca Drive. Ignacio Morales Tinajero, better known as

Nacho, is the owner of this family operated restaurant that first opened its doors in September of 2019.

The restaurant is lovingly named after Morales’ son, Bryan, who is autistic and whose pickiness with food inspired him to experiment with flavors in an effort to create food that Bryan would eat. Today the restaurant offers a variety of homemade dishes and desserts which consistently receive rave reviews online and attract patrons from far and wide.

“We wanted to keep Moulton a happy place,” Ignacio said. “We are in the business of creating memories and smiles. Bring your family into Bryan’s Daily Treat in Moulton and allow us to craft memories that will be sure to leave you smiling for weeks!”

Whether you are in the mood for a cold beer or a delicious steak, Moulton is the place to be!

Majek Vineyard & Winery a Moravia Vineyard & Winery

If you are on the hunt for your next great glass of wine, make sure to add Majek Vineyard and Winery and Moravia Vineyard and Winery to your list of must stop wineries.

Located about ten miles from Moulton and Flatonia is Majek Vineyard and Winery. This boutique vineyard and winery in the scenic rolling hills of Central Texas serves delicious Texas wine and food in a peaceful vineyard setting. Family owned and operated, Randy and Lynne Majek sure know a thing or two about wine and Texas charm.

“Our business is located on family property,” Lynne Majek said. “My husband’s great grandfather settled the property in 1908. He was a winemaker from the Czech republic and a civil engineer.”

“He moved here fleeing conscription from the Austrian and Hungarian Army in World War I,” she continued. “He came here as a single man, married, and raised three children and cleared 100-acres of land with mules!”

The Majeks lived in the area for three generations until the sevenyear drought of the 1950s pushed them to move to Corpus Christi. Skip ahead to the year 2000 and back up to San Antonio where Lynne and Randy were living, the couple couldn’t help but want a place to go to to escape the busy city life - a getaway, if you will.

“Randy said his family had interest in land around Schulenburg and we ended up buying 20 acres from the family and just started clearing it,” Lynne said.

The land was in rough shape as it had grown freely for over 50 years. “It had gone back to nature,” she remembered, “and we started clearing it.”

While on the farm one weekend, Lynne said to Randy, “I wonder if I can just learn how to grow one thing.”

Above, friends gather at Majek Vineyard and Winery.

This statement had not come out of the blue. In 2010, Lynne was working for ATT San Antonio when the company announced that its headquarters were moving to Dallas. Dallas wasn’t something Lynne could do, so this news got her thinking about her future and what was next.

“I already had fallen in love with the Texas Wine Industry so I ended up getting a two year degree from Texas Tech in viticulture, which is grape growing,” she said. “We planted our vineyard in 2013, we opened the Taste Room in 2014, and in 2015 we started the winery and I also got laid off … so it ended up being my exit strategy from ATT, long story short,” she laughed.

Majek Vineyard and Winery’s tasting room has been open for 9 years and has dry, sweet, red, and white wines.

“We have about ten different wines that we serve. We try to have something for everybody,” Lynne said. “If somebody is driving from Houston and it’s 100 miles away, we wanna make sure that they always have a great glass of wine when they get here, no matter what style of wine they like.”

“We grow one variety of grapes - black Spanish - and we make a Rosé out of that,” Lynne continued. “The rest of our wines we source the grapes out of the High Plains of Texas, which is in the Lubbock area. They can grow everything up there! Our winemaker contracts with grape growers up there and they press the grapes up there and then they bring them down to us and we finish the wine here on the property.”

“We have very deep roots in the area,” she said, when asked why they chose this part of Texas. “It’s a beautiful, charming part of Texas. All of the different cultures that are emphasized here. Plus It’s just a beautiful part of the state. It has lots of green grass, rolling hills, oak trees, beautiful homes and properties, a very peaceful, restful part of the state.”

“We just really appreciate people who support Texas local products and support Texas wine,” Lynne said, “because it’s a very growing industry and the Texas wines are among the most respected now in the US, so we are thrilled to be a part of the Texas Wine Industry.”

Majek Vineyard and Winery is located at 12508 FM 957 in Schulenburg and online at www.majekvineyard.com.

As we head south of Schulenburg and along the winding trail of FM 957, Moravia Vineyard and Winery invites wine drinkers to take a breather, and a drink, in this beautiful Texas winery.

First opening to the public in summer of 2012, Luca Suschitz, owner and winemaker, built his home and vineyard from the ground up. An engineer from Houston by day and winemaker by, well, the same day, Luca did his research on what grapes would thrive in this hot, Texas climate, and worked on perfecting the formula until he got the perfect bottle.

His wines are made from Blanc du Bois grapes and Black Spanish grapes, which thrive in Texas and are highly resistant to Pierce’s disease.

“We have several vintages of very dry red and white wines,” Luca said. “These are the pride of our winery: harvested, manufactured and bottled in Moravia, Texas!”

The winery also produces a fair sweet rose wine named Moravia Sweetheart and a sweet white wine named Grace. And for those looking for more than just a wine tasting, guests will be thrilled to discover that the winery also offers scenic mountain bike rides and of course, bottles of their Texas grown wines to bring home!

Moravia Vineyard and Winery is located at 12564 FM 957 in Schulenburg and online at www.moraviavineyard.com.

MOULTON’S CIVIC ORGANIZATIONS OFFER AN OPPORTUNITY TO BE OF SERVICE TO THE COMMUNITY

Organizations are an important component of any community and the ones in Moulton are using their influence for the better good. Whether it’s raising money for scholarships, providing assistance to the handicapped, or donating to the food pantry, organizations keep a community tight knit, cared for and full of purpose.

MOULTON LIONS CLUB

One of the organizations that continually makes a positive impact in the tiny, but mighty town of Moulton is the Moulton Lions Club. Chartered in 2001, they are dedicated to helping the Moulton community.

Moulton Lions Club’s primary objective is eyesight. The club is involved with numerous blindness prevention and assistance programs for individuals and countries to help alleviate blindness. They also help the handicapped and are involved in numerous youth projects such as Moulton Little League Baseball. Their meetings are held every first and third Thursday at noon in Kloesel’s Steakhouse and Bar, east of downtown Moulton.

The 2022-2023 Club President is Mr. Craig Hughes. For more information, readers are encouraged to visit their website at redbirdtx.com/ lions.html.

MOULTON KNIGHTS OF COLUMBUS

The Moulton Knights of Columbus Council No. 3244 is driven by charitable actions. Established for religious, charitable, educational and scientific purposes, the Knights have raised countless dollars for the Catholic Church and other deserving organizations in Lavaca County. They also partner with church groups from across the area to assist with whatever each group needs to continue their mission.

The Knights of Columbus motto,“In service to one. In service to all,” conveys what this organization is really all about. They can be found on Facebook under: Moulton Knights of Columbus.

MOULTON CATHOLIC DAUGHTERS

Moulton Catholic Daughters of the Americas “strives to embrace the principle of faith working through love in the promotion of justice, equality, and the advancement of human rights and human dignity for all,” as listed on their website.

Under a motto that calls for unity and charity, the CDA helps women develop their spirituality and provides avenues of service to live out that spirituality. It also gives members a unique opportunity to share their faith with other Catholic women in the area and nationwide.

They often partner with other organizations to host events, like Family Night, in which the community is invited out to enjoy delicious grilled burgers courtesy of the Moulton Knights of Columbus and dessert from the Moulton Catholic Daughters.

The Moulton Catholic Daughters are extremely active on Facebook and can be found under: Moulton Catholic Daughters, Fr. Joseph Kopp Court 2018.

MOULTON MASONIC LODGE

The Moulton Masonic Lodge is home to The Freemasons - a charitable fraternal organization that has been around for a very long time. The organization held their first meeting on July 20, 1866 and was chartered June 15, 1867 with 18 members.

The Masons have supported the community of Moulton in more ways than one. Over the years they have given to the Food Bank, supported Veteran organizations, donated scholarships to Moulton High School graduates, sponsored Little League teams and more.

Organizations like the ones listed above keep the community going through their countless acts of charity. Moulton is heard, taken care of and propelled into a better way of life, all while preserving its historical integrity and roots.

ADULTS AND KIDS ALIKE COME TO THE MOULTON LITTLE LEAGUE FIELD FOR THE INFAMOUS BURGERS AND FREE SNOW CONES AND END UP LEAVING WITH A SENSE OF COMMUNITY

It’s hard to imagine a small American town without youth sports. There’s nothing quite like the feeling that comes over you while watching kids run around on a field as they experience the joy that it is to celebrate victories with their peers and bond over losses. The Moulton Little League has fought hard to not only continue offering kids the ability to participate in America’s favorite pastime locally, but grow the organization in order to serve the communities youth better than ever before.

“Moulton Little League benefits our community by giving our youth the opportunity to play baseball and

softball while building friendships and encouraging a healthy and fun learning environment,” reported Brenda Kram, MLL Board President. “Our children also learn the value of teamwork, sportsmanship, and fair play. Moulton Little League gives the community a chance to volunteer, support and join our Little League experience.”

Over the years, the MLL registration numbers have continued to consistently grow, with the largest amount being a total of 116 players in a season. This growth is largely due to the fact that it’s the only organized youth sporting option available

to the children of Moulton aside from what the school district offers. Taking this into consideration, the MLL has made it their mission to continue to improve the organization.

Bottom row left to right: Hope Pierce, Skyra Kalisek, Hazel Pierce, Dillon Colburn, Madden Moore, and Hailey Starr. Not pictured: Karoline Claybourn.

In preparation for the 2023 season, MLL board members discussed ways the league could serve the players better. It was agreed that applying for grants would enable them to fund long-anticipated updates.

“This last year we were awarded two grants, the GVEC Power-up Grant and the Dickson Allen Foundation Grant, which we were able to use to add an irrigation system to improve and maintain our field and its integrity and upgrade our press box into a safer and more functional facility. For further growth, we would like to improve the batting cage area and our practice field,” stated Ann Koncaba, Safety Officer of the MLL board.

Considering these were the first grants they had ever applied for as a league and they were awarded both, it was quite an exciting year full of teamwork and hustle, both on and off the field. As the season came to an end, that dedication was reflected in Moulton’s 8-year-old Coach Pitch Girls Softball team qualifying to play in the Southeast Zone District 31 Specials Tournament – Moulton’s first ever All-Star team.

During regular 2023 season play, there were so many girls signed up for the 8-year-old softball team (totaling 21 in all), they were split into two teams. This is abnormal for a small town like Moulton where in the past they have had to scrounge up players just to make one full team ... but not this year. Twelve girls progressed to the All-Star team that made it to the final four in the tournament: consisting of teams from Moulton, Gonzales, Yoakum and Cuero. After playing their hearts out, the 8-year-old All-Star girls were knocked out upon losing game four and returned home with

anticipation coursing through their veins, already hungry for next year’s season.

Head All-Star Coach and MLL Board Member Claudia Gonzales remarked on the incredible growth the kids experienced while playing in the tournament, being that the 12 All-Star team players consisted of girls split from both teams during regular season play. “They really came together as a team, hustled and gave it their all while facing struggles like playing four nights in a row in the summer heat. I am so proud and honored that the parents wanted their kids to participate, allowing Moulton Little League to be put on the All-Star map and provide the players with an unforgettable experience!” Gonzales exclaimed.

To celebrate the unprecedented year MLL had, a Little League Fun Day was hosted at the field. Members from the community came to celebrate all the kids’ hard work and attendees were treated to nachos, hot dogs, sausage wraps and an assortment of drinks, candy and chips from the concession stand. It was later announced that the party wasn’t going to end there - MLL would have a float in the annual Moulton Jamboree Grand Parade - another first. Folks were elated to see a Little League float pulling down Main Street, full of little faces beaming with big smiles as they proudly sported their uniforms.

After a year like this, the Moulton Little League plans to keep the momentum going and is hoping the upcoming season will end with even more positive experiences and potential All-Star teams ... who’s ready? Let’s play ball!

Conveniently located within about 90 miles of our state’s metropolitan areas, Moulton is close enough to keep you connected to the big cities while still offering you the benefits and charm that you’ll only find in a small town.

This historic area of Texas is also home to Shiner and Gonzales, all favorite sites of early settlement by Czech and German immigrants and brimming with Texas history waiting to be rediscovered. Moulton is also proud of her excellent school district and winning high school 1A sports team.

There’s no better time than now! Whether you are a future visitor looking to escape the urban grind, a growing family looking for a new place with small town values to call home, or a small business looking for one of the best places to start out, we look forward to meeting you and introducing you firsthand to Moulton.

Get to know why, as they say, Moulton is “easy to find … hard to leave.”
