Welcome!

Howdy! The Flatonia Chamber of Commerce welcomes you to Flatonia, Texas, the past and future place to meet in the middle. Flatonia was founded in 1873 by pioneer merchant F.W. Flato during the expansion of the Union Pacific Railroad that is now a historic attraction in the heart of our downtown. Entering its 150th year, Flatonia is still maintaining its historical roots while bringing in fresh and new attractions catering to any and all visitors passing through.

You can find Flatonia nestled in between Houston, Austin, and San Antonio as you travel down Interstate 10 or Highway 95. Our small town community boasts many intriguing places to stop and shop, grab a bite to eat, or stay a while in one of our local historic lodges. Supporting our variety of businesses, the Flatonia Chamber of Commerce promotes the ongoing events of our community through our website, social media, print media, and our weekly e-newsletter. We host an array of events from Wine Walks, Market Days, Crawfish Boil, and our infamous yearly festival Czhilispiel. Going into its 50th year, Czhilispiel is one of Texas’ top 7 Chili-Cook offs and Festivals. Named such because of our town’s Czech and German heritage; the “z” was added to add some Czech flair while “spiel” derives from the German language meaning “play”. The Czhili festival started in 1973 as a fundraiser for a local doctor, but has since grown into one of the biggest events in Flatonia now supporting our local community through scholarships and non-profit fundraisers. Come Czech us out and enjoy live music, a biergarten, arts and crafts vendors, a 5K run, and a carnival every fourth weekend of October!

The Flatonia, Texas magazine is produced and published by Texas-based Trips Publications, a publisher with a focus on small towns throughout Texas. To view all of the towns in the Trips Publications family, visit tripspublications.com or call 979-725-3080 to request copies.

Jak se mas and Wilkommen to Flatonia. We love our history, and we are carving out our place in the future. As the halfway point between Houston and San Antonio we are far enough away from the big city to hold on to our Texas roots but close enough if needed.

Less than a mile from the interstate, our quaint and beautiful downtown is on the National Register of Historic Places. Like an old western version of an open-air mall, you can stroll to outstanding dining, shopping, lodging, movies, watering holes, train viewing, great museums, and event venues.

Printed in Mexico

Just a short hop from downtown are many attractions such as a great 9-hole golf course, famous painted churches, a train viewing platform, parks, pool, splashpad, trails, livestock auction, and the American Legion dance and events hall. The Shiner brewery, La Grange, several wineries, and multiple antique hunting opportunities are a within a short Texas drive. So, step back and experience old Texas with modern amenities. Spend a day or a night or as long as you’d like. I guarantee you’ll love it!

LOCAL TREASURES

Must see sites in Flatonia VISITORS WILL WANT TO SEE ALL OF THESE FLATONIA GEMS The 9-hole course at the Flatonia Golf Course facility features 3,056 yards of golf from the longest tees for a par of 36. Designed by Lonnie Garbade, the Flatonia golf course opened in 1993. Richard Schacherl manages the course as the General Manager. The fairways are narrow and the greens are elevated. Unlike many of the older rural, 9-hole courses in the state, Flatonia’s course is a little longer (over 3,000 yards) and the holes tend to play more like the big-city courses. Number five is the longest par four at 413 yards, and is listed as the number one handicap. Hole seven is fun to play, a 114-yard par three that requires a carry over water to reach the green. Flatonia Golf Course is located at 1245 East US Highway 90. The two-story Olle Hotel, located in Flatonia’s National Historic District, was built between 1896 and 1901 by a local physician, G. W. Allen, Sr. In the hotel’s early days, her rooms were mostly filled with the many drummers, or travelling salesman, who crossed the countryside by rail. Today the current owner, Kathryn Geesaman, still greets business travelers in addition to happy vacationers, tourists and those seeking a respite from busy city life. After enjoying a restful night that only a quiet, small Texas town like Flatonia can provide, guests wake up to a hot breakfast, served buffet-style. “I always make something different,” said Geesaman. “I make a hot casserole, kolaches, homemade granola and a fruit tray. The buffet is open for an hour and a half.”

Olle Hotel boasts 11 rooms and 13 bathrooms. There are also three houses available on-site for families or those desiring more privacy. One of the houses is pet friendly for those traveling with their fourlegged family members. And while the structure itself may be historic, guests won’t miss out on modern conveniences like wi-fi and satellite TV. Call Olle Hotel at 361-772-0310 to book a room or visit the hotel online at www.ollehotel.com. Step into the E. A. Arnim Archives and Museum in Flatonia and into the past. Housed in two large downtown buildings, the museum’s exhibits illustrate the settlement, early history and continuing development of the town of Flatonia and the surrounding rural area. Historical photographs of citizens at work and play, letters, documents and local advertising memorabilia throughout the exhibits add extra layers of detail to the story of Flatonia, its people and its culture. AREA ATTRACTIONS Main Street in downtown Flatonia. The Lyric Theater allows patrons to step off the street and back in time with classic movies and old-fashioned favorites. Originally known as the Foster Building when it was built in 1879, the name changed The Happy Hour Theatre in 1913 and later to The Lyric Theatre in 1930. It received a complete makeover in the 1950s.

The Lyric Theater, Lyric Ice Cream Parlor and Big Time Pizza are located in downtown Flatonia on East South Main Street and online at www.lyrictheatre.com. Building on her experience of running a mobile food truck during her freshman year in College Station, Taylor Laney was quick to jump in on a permanent location when the old Darling Emporium building came up for sale in downtown Flatonia. She opened Darlin’s Diner in that location in September 2021, a popular foodie destination for both locals and travelers alike.

E. A. Arnim Archives and Museum in Flatonia is open Thursday and Friday from 1 to 4 p.m. and Saturday 10 a.m. to noon and 1 to 3 p.m.

“The biscuits and gravy are my favorite,” shared Laney. “Many come in for the eggs benedict, but I love the homemade gravy we make every day with bacon juice, like I like to call it. It’s good! Or people get the Darlin’s breakfast, which is where you get everything. It’s massive and I don’t see a ton of people finish it. At lunch, I like the cheese-bacon-avocado-ranch burger. It’s the most ordered thing on the menu.” Darlin’s Diner is open every day for breakfast and lunch, from 7 a.m. to 2 p.m. and features a variety of homestyle classics that will fill any rumbling tummy that walks in the door. Darlin’s Diner is located at 114 East South Main in downtown Flatonia and online at www.darlinsdiner.com.

The Lyric Theater is being lovingly preserved by John Knotts and his wife, Terry Ehler Knotts.

The Market in Flatonia excels in combining friendly faces, fresh produce, fine meats and fabulous selection to create the perfect local grocery. The Market 2 has the largest stock of beer, wine and liquor within 50 miles. Owners Randy and Cyndi Johnson invite everyone to pop in and experience their stores that are as unique as Flatonia itself. The Market is located at 116 West North Main and can be reached at 361-865-9244. The Market 2 is located at 120 West North Main. They are online at www.flatoniamarket.com and www.themarket2.com. The history of the railroads in Flatonia lives at the Central Texas Rail History Center. The Center houses many historical artifacts, model train displays and photographs from when ‘rail was king’ in Flatonia.

Darlin’s Diner is a local favorite that draws hungry crowds from the entire area.

The Central Texas Rail History Center is located at 104 East South Main Street and open every Friday and Saturday from 10 a.m.–noon and 1–3 p.m. Group and special tours are welcomed.

zhilispiel is a nod to Flatonia’s Czech and German heritage. First, the name comes from a play on the word “Chili.” The addition of the “z” is a play on a Czech spelling, and the German work “spiel” means play. The festival started in 1973 to celebrate the centennial anniversary of Flatonia. Czhilispiel began as a fundraiser to help fund a local Flatonia student’s medical school education. At the time Flatonia needed a doctor, so the residents organized the Czech heritage festival and chili cookoff, Czhilispiel. The student agreed to serve the community for at least five years after completing medical school, but ended up staying longer. Czhilispiel continues to use proceeds from the event to benefit local needs, whether for students or community services.

Czhilispiel is held every year on the fourth full weekend of October.

Over the years, Czhilispiel has grown from a small cook-off to a larger event with a concert series, biergarten, carnival, parade, arts and crafts market, 5K and various activities throughout the weekend. It is held every year on the fourth full weekend of October. Some of the past performers have included: Rick Trevino, Robert Earl Keen, Eli Young Band, Stoney LaRue, Aaron Watson, Brave Combo, The Bellamy Brothers, The Dujka Brothers, Cory Morrow, Wade Bowen, TC Rocks and many, many more. Czhilispiel also has a variety of opportunities for partnerships as sponsors, commercial and food vendors, arts and crafts vendors, cook-off and event participants, and for volunteers. The event is 100% volunteer driven and additional hands are always

Custom invitations are created and mailed for each party and place cards are made for all the guests, as well as a memento envelope for the honoree filled with photos of all the attendees. Children’s tea parties include a dress-up session with make-up, costumes, antique hats, and handmade capes with brooches.

Miss Vicky is a gem and adds a touch of class to everything she does.

Each tea party is served the house favorite, Miss Vicky’s Yorkshire melt-in-your-mouth scones with clotted cream and black raspberry jam. A customized lunch menu is served as well as decadent dessert options from her bakery. There is sure to be something for everyone to enjoy from her spread of carefully curated options. Aside from her infamous tea parties, Victoria also does all things interior design. She offers upholstery services, custom-made bedding and window coverings, furniture restoration and floral design. “I love every phase of design, including graphic design. I always say I must have been a flower in my last life because I love floral design. I’ve been doing interior design for 25 years now. And of course, I love to cook. So, I’m doing all the things I love with Floy Farm Interior Design, Inc. and its subsidiaries.”

One service many folks in the area don’t realize Victoria offers is she’s a certified florist. As a member of the FTD online floral delivery service, she delivers arrangements as far as La Grange, Schulenberg and Smithville. While being a contractor for FTD keeps her busy, she loves getting local custom orders. “We do some really beautiful work, and we price our florals according to what the customer wants. So we ask them, ‘How much are you willing to pay today?’ when they call in and whatever amount they say, we make the arrangement according to that. We try to accommodate the customers.” It is important to Victoria to contribute to the community. One way she does that is by offering her floral skills for funerals and gravesite arrangements. “I feel like floral design is a God given talent, and that is my contribution to the deceased and grieving.” She has also served as the President of the Chamber of Commerce and offers her tea room as a suitable space for club meetings and community gatherings. You can find more information on her Facebook page, Olde Town Tea Room & Bakery, as well as her website, www. floyfarm.com. FLATONIA, TEXAS |

Historic Refurb TAMMY COLLINS SHARES PROJECT PLANS AND SENTIMENTAL JOURNEY OF DISCOVERY BY MICHELLE BANSE STOKES

If you’ve visited downtown Flatonia recently, you’ve probably noticed significant changes to some of the historic buildings. The visible improvements around town are a reflection of the vision of Tammy Collins, a retired RN that is now using her healing touch in a new and inspiring way. “I’ve lived here full-time since 2015,” said Tammy. “My first one, at 113 East North Main, was a Western Auto store for over 60 years. I used to frequent the store and one day I discovered it was closed. I looked online and learned that it had been for sale for a year with no sign. I thought this to be a wonderful opportunity. I bought it and started cleaning it out and learning about it. That’s how I got started.” This project was just the beginning of an amazing adventure for Tammy that would prove to be a benefit for the whole community. “Right after that building, I purchased a house in town,” shared Tammy. “It was very dilapidated and overgrown, but it had so much potential. I had a desire to restore

I had a desire to restore it and make something great out of it. it and make something great out of it.” The recent pandemic that impacted the world would prove to be a challenge for Tammy’s plans for remodeling the local structures. “It was right at the beginning of COVID,” added Tammy. “I had a lot of stainedglass windows (that needed restoration) and I couldn’t find anyone to take them to. Everything was shut down. I took the windows out of the house and started working on them in the old Western Auto building. Through this project, I got to know my neighbors.” These neighborly relationships would lead to Tammy’s acquisition of several more projects in need of her tender loving care. “I found one building and the rest came to me through relationships,” said Tammy. “One by one, over a couple of years, I ended up with all of these historic buildings. When complete, I hope they are a mix of retail, entertainment, lodging, dining and the like. We need fun things in this town. These buildings deserve a nice, long future.” In spite of all her hard work, Tammy is quick to recognize the community that is behind her efforts. “Everyone has been amazing,” shared Tammy. “I have had a lot of people walk in the door while I was working to discover what I am doing. Everyone has been so receptive and it’s really wonderful. They are happy to see the buildings being restored and kind of brought back to their original state.

Facing page on left, Tammy Lahourcade Collins, BSN, RN, stands outside one of the buildings she is restoring in downtown Flatonia. Tammy believes the buildings “deserve a nice, long future.”

“Recently I spoke to the local Rotary Club, of which I am now a member, and I was so nervous. At the end, so many people were telling me these great stories of their family members that used to work in those buildings or had family ties to them. This has definitely been a great project and I look forward to what is to come.”

A FAMILY TRADITION

S & S Grain, Inc. RICHARD SCHACHERL SHARES FULL-CIRCLE JOURNEY AND HIS KEYS TO SUCCESS BY MICHELLE BANSE STOKES

Most would be quick to acknowledge that customer service is he didn’t immediately climb into a rig and give the family integral to the prosperity of all businesses. However, building business a big 10-4. Finding his own highway was the a brand synonymous with a catch-all phrase that’s too often original plan. simply thrown around in today’s culture doesn’t just happen by chance. Richard Schacherl of S & S Grain in “I never thought I’d come back here,” Richard Flatonia knows what it takes and is willing to share shared. “I went to college and played baseball and Above, Richard and Kelly the secrets of success that have kept the iconic grain basketball, first at Northwood University in Cedar Schacherl of S & S Grain, hauler on the road for over 54 years. We visited Flatonia and she said she Richard said. “S&S Grain started in 1968. Dad had one truck could never live here because there is nothing to do. Our and he was driving it. After studying the ins and outs of business at St. Edward’s, it was time to learn the real tricks of the trade from Mom and Dad. “I started working for Dad in 1994,” Richard said. “He gave me the keys and taught me. When I first started, I couldn’t even back up the truck and trailer. Every day I watched Dad and soaked it all in.” Richard also learned what he had to do to serve the customers of S & S Grain and, in the process, had to make some difficult decisions along the way. “The hardest transition was when I started running the company,” Richard said. “Dad suffered cardiac arrest in 2005. He was deprived of oxygen for five to seven minutes. We leaned on the power of prayer. Dad woke up four days later and stayed in the hospital for 30 days before coming home to Flatonia. We went from S & S Grain Company to S & S Grain Incorporated. The scariest moment of my life was when I told Dad that he was vice president.” Today, Richard continues on his family’s traditions. The company has grown to seven employees, including Richard, with Kelly pitching in, too. Richard handles the books and day-to-day, but he still has a passion for getting behind the wheel. “I love driving because I get to see my customers,” Richard added. “I sell them raffle tickets and I buy raffle tickets. They give me hell. I believe that the most important thing in business is your customer. I treat them with the utmost respect. They are the lifeline to my business. We have great customers.”

Every day I watched Dad and soaked it all in. Top, Richard reflects on a picture of his father, Adolph Schacherl Jr; bottom, Richard manages the paperwork but his true passion is driving and interacting with customers.

CITY OF FLATONIA Flatonia Commercial Historic District That’s right, the City of Flatonia has a historic district listed on the National Register of Historic Places! The Flatonia Commercial Historic District encompasses 36 acres of the old downtown of Flatonia centered around the Union Pacific Railroad tracks with both North and South Main Streets running east/west, and bounded on the west by South Faires Street and on the east by Middle Street. There are a total of 74 buildings, structures or other sites in the historic district with 60 being contributing and 14 being non-contributing. The period of significance is from 1874 to 1970.

A mural commemorates Flatonia’s railroad past in Central Park, downtown.

We hope you enjoy the vast array of structures many of which have remained relatively true to their origins.

SURROUNDING AREA

Meet the Neighbors Enjoy a short 13 minute drive to Cistern, a charming community proud of their Czech and German heritage. Beautiful landscapes, ranches and countryside surround the unincorporated town. Visitors will want to stop in at Cistern Store, known far and wide for their classic hamburgers, cold beer, and live entertainment. You can learn more about them on page two of this publication. La Grange is nestled along the Colorado River and features history, beauty, festivals, museums, concerts, antiques, air shows, feasts, and an annual county country fair. While there, visit Monument Hill & Kreische Brewery State Historic Sites at 414 State Loop 92. Open daily; the park is free to the public. You’ll also want to stop by and see the Fayette County Courthouse, pictured. You can learn more about the courthouse at www.co.fayette.tx.us/page/fayette. Courthouse. Schulenburg is home of the Stanzel Model Aircraft Museum, a facility that strives to preserve the creative genius and talent of Victor and Joe Stanzel and promote an appreciation of flying through educational programs and projects. Through Victor and Joe’s example, it seeks to enlighten and inspire all people, young and old to follow their dreams. Stop by and walk through the museum yourself or book a guided tour. Guided tours give schools and visitors insight into the world of the Stanzel model aircraft. The docents will gladly share their knowledge of the exhibits in our three museums and answer any questions about the Stanzel products. Take the short drive to Moulton and discover a historical marker located at the downtown gazebo that recognizes Adolph Hofner (1916-2000) for his role as a pioneer of western swing music. He was the first to record the classic Cotton-Eyed Joe in 1941. FLATONIA, TEXAS |
