TAKE ROOT PLUS: LOCAL HANGOUT BECKEY’S CAFE

A COOL SPOT to GRAB A CONE or a BURGER at an old school DRIVE-IN

Welcome!

My Grandpa Banse was a water well man. Some days, when I was particularly bored, I would ride alongside him in his well truck, bouncing on the vinyl bench seat as he shifted gears on back country roads. Typically we’d end up in a cow pasture in the middle of nowhere, pulling pipes out of a well to replace the pump. Grandpa always relished drinking the fresh, cool water out of his cupped hands at the end of the job. Afterwards, we’d end up at a local café eating a simple plate lunch with homemade pie for dessert.

I didn’t really appreciate how beautiful this area was when I was a child. The old clanking bridges over creek beds, graceful oak trees scattered across open farmland and regal downtown buildings that hold stories of a historic past. I can honestly say that, after traveling to many beautiful places across this great country, there’s no better place than right here. In this edition, we are tempting you with some of the very best spring and summer fun in Columbus. You’ll want to stop by Dairy Cone for an old fashioned ice cream cone, take a tube down the Colorado River with Waldo’s, and make plans to attend Magnolia Days on the square. Take time to sit back and slow down with your favorite brew on the porch at The House or engage your sense of adventure on a side-by-side from Columbus Outfitters. Feel like a backyard barbecue? Meatcutter George Barnes at HEB is ready to help you find the perfect brisket or ribs for your grill. As for me, I’m headed to Beckey’s Café for their simple plate lunch and a slice of homemade pie while reminiscing on my summers of yesterday. I hope you’ll join me.

Welcome to Columbus, Texas, the city of “live oaks and dead folks.” Halfway between Houston and San Antonio, we are close enough for a day trip or a weekend get away.

LOCAL TREASURES

Must see sites in Columbus Visitors will want to experience all of these Columbus gems. Alley Log Cabin and Antique Tool Museum is a two-room oak log cabin was built in 1836. According to family history, the cabin was sided with pine lumber floated by raft from a large sawmill in Bastrop in the early 1850s. The cabin stood on its original site from 1836 until 1976. It was then moved to Columbus, restored, and given to the Magnolia Homes Tour, Inc., now the Columbus Historical Preservation Trust, Inc. Tours of the Alley Log Cabin and Antique Tool Museum may be arranged by contacting the Columbus Chamber of Commerce at 979-732-8385. The cabin and museum are located at 1224 Bowie Street. R&R Shaved Ice serves up New Orleans style shaved ice. Their specials are a one of a kind and are derived from experimenting with flavors and toppings to come up with mouth watering sweet treats. R&R Shaved Ice is located at 1031 Walnut Street. The Colorado County Courthouse was completed in 1891. Architect Eugene T. Heiner designed the building in the Renaissance Revival temple style. A final restoration, completed in 2014 by way of the Texas Historic Courthouse Preservation Program, assisted in returning most of the details in the Colorado County courthouse to their 1910 iteration. The courthouse is at the center of downtown Columbus.

Hound Song Brewing Co. was born as the brainchild of Travis and Raven Kocurek, owners and operators of the popular brewery in downtown Columbus. The tap room is a hot spot for locals and visitors alike. Food trucks and live music are frequently found in addition to their tempting brews. Hound Song Brewing Co. sits welcomes guests at 535 Walnut Street. The brewery is located in the old Harbert’s Garage. Come see the new and improved take-out at Beason’s Park, where you can rest at one of the many shaded picnic tables. You will also find free parking, restrooms and a pavilion. Beason’s Park is located on Highway 90 (Walnut Street) near the East River Bridge, just one block from downtown Columbus. Paddling the Colorado River through the town of Columbus affords the opportunity to see wildflowers, birds, turtles and more. This 6.5 mile trail can take anywhere from two to five hours to complete, and the peaceful waters and calm rapids make for a wonderful day on the river. The put-in for this trail is at the Business 71 crossing under the North River Bridge. Columbus Golf Course is a simple 9-hole course that features tree-lined fairways and water on seven holes, as well as the chance to spot the whitetail deer and ducks that frequently roam the course. The design incorporates a good mixture of skill requirements. A few holes play short, but others are of a more standard length. Three of the par fours play around 300 yards, and the other two are 341 and 376 yards. You’ll find the golf course at 141 Veterans Drive. There is no membership required to play. Colorado River Co. operates out of Waldo’s Camp to offer an awesome tubing experience From Waldo’s Camp, Colorado River Co. will shuttle tubers upstream to begin their tubing adventure. Tubing exit will be back at Waldo’s Camp at the infamous blue wall. Float time is two to three hours, depending on the water flow and any sandbar stops. RV spots and cabins are also available for rental. Waldo’s Camp can be reached at www.waldoscamp.com. The Columbus City Swimming Pool is located at 102 Legion Drive and is a great way to cool off during the summer. It is a public pool that is available for party rental by calling 979-732-8058. Dairy Cone Serving the community with old-school eats and treats ... plus a lot more. BY EMILY HENDERSON

TALK OF THE TOWN |

EMILY HENDERSON

S

ince 1950, Dairy Cone has been a Columbus icon – that’s 72 years in the making! It has functioned at two previous locations before settling at 836 Walnut Street, where current owner Tommy Hahn boasts is its final home with plenty of room to accommodate their customers-a-plenty. How many small-town burger joints can measure up to The Cone’s time-tasted legacy? You’ll have to decide for yourself! Current ownership has invested in The Cone legacy. Tommy supervised Dairy Queen stores before he and his wife, Barbara, purchased the Dairy Cone business in 1974. Tommy’s father, Clarence Hahn, was the Dairy Cone manager at the time, and in total for 26 years. When the previous owners voiced their interest in selling, his father knew they had to keep the business in the family – so Clarence reached out to his son. Tommy and his wife ended up purchasing the business, and ran it together until Barbara’s death in 2009. Tommy continues to run The Cone, and has done so for 48 years altogether. However, that’s just the tip of the ice-cream cone as far as the Dairy Cone owner’s involvement with the local community. Mr. Tommy Hahn served as County Commissioner, working for the county for 24 years. He also served as a volunteer firefighter for 27 years, coached Little League teams, and was an involved father to his three sons as they grew up. Now he’s “Big Paw” to six grandkids and loves every minute of it. All of his local service and family-man values reflect his genuine heart for people, which shows in the way he runs his business: developing personal relationships with employees and customers alike.

Above, the man behind the mission, Dairy Cone owner, Tommy Hahn; middle, Dairy Cone offers traditional drivein foods like thick cut fries, juicy hamburgers with fresh ingredients, and classic malts and ice cream sundaes all made with Blue Bell; left, Dairy Cone is located at 836 Walnut Street.

“This is your hometown burger place. I like that people come here after Friday night football games and sporting events. I like that we’ve always been home town. If the mayor calls, we do our best to try to produce something for the people that need us. Anybody in uniform that’s a first responder eats free. If the fire department has a big call and we’re here, we cook. I think that goes back to my dad and even the Dairy Cone owners before, that’s just something that the calling has been here – if you need it, we’re here.” As he spoke of his employees, he stated, “Employees end up being like family. I have a picture frame in the restaurant of the football playoffs of my kids, and employees would bring me pictures of their children to put up. I can show you most of those kids came back through as employees of ours.” Tommy reminisced, “They come in as teenagers and they work for us, go to college, and a lot of them still come back during the summer to work. I guess they will say it’s the mom-and-pop thing. Yep, that’s us.” His longest currently employed team member is Dairy Cone manager, Karen Broussard, who came on at the age of 13 and never left. She learned The Cone way of freshly grinding and pressing hamburger patties daily 40 years ago under the training of Tommy’s father, Clarence, when he was still the manager. Karen is the personification of how the Dairy Cone legacy has been passed from employee to employee, family to family, tying everyone together. In the spirit of passing on The Cone tradition, Karen’s daughter, Ivah, now works under her management. “So employment here really is a family thing – I used to rock Ivah as a baby, and now she’s working here with her mom,” Tommy endearingly recalled. In addition to providing a family-centered, stable place to work for members of the community, Tommy takes pride in the Dairy Cone being a place people can always count on in times of need. “We have stayed open during the floods. We have delivered food to people who couldn’t get here. When the ice and the snow came last year, we did the same thing. We had people call, home bound with no electricity. And fortunately, we were still open and could feed them a hot meal. We produced food for the hospital when they went down. When Hurricane Rita came through, we had people – my goodness – we had cars parked up and down the interstate! They were either broke down or ran out of gas. We did our very best to keep feeding people, whatever we could do.” Tommy said, humbly. “So wow, we have stayed open through floods, snow and ice and hurricanes… the whole thing.”

Dairy Cone manager, Karen Broussard, in the background, with daughter, Ivah, in the foreground. They are rolling out and pressing freshly ground hamburger patties for the day – an old-school, passed-down tradition at The Cone. “Ground fresh daily,” isn’t just a slogan, it’s what Dairy Cone is known for.

When asked to sum up what Dairy Cone represents, Tommy replied “Just simply, we’ve been here a long time. It’s the people that have made us, so to speak. It’s been a combined effort: we will take care of Columbus, and Columbus is always taking care of us. No doubt.” No doubt, it’s local spots like Dairy Cone that make towns like Columbus a great place to be.

During 2020 when people were looking for places to go on the weekends to get out of the house, Dairy Cone became somewhat of a safe haven for big city out-of-towners looking for an escape. The Cone never had to close since it has no dining room, so folks began pouring in to discover this little small town burger place on Yelp that grinds fresh daily. “People found us and now they know where we’re at. And we have steadily progressed. I mean, we’re still growing, 72 years later!” Tommy proclaimed. 11 | COLUMBUS, TEXAS

A Leap of Faith Local meat cutter shares story of family, prayer, and fortitude. PHOTOGRAPHYBY EMILY HENDERSON Whether you know his name or not, you’ve probably met George Barnes. He’s the meat cutter at HEB that will captivate you in happy conversation and give your dull shopping trip a heaping helping of merriment. And while most people’s resumes reflect years of different jobs and changed career paths, George has been an icon at HEB for over 32 years. “It started out as just a job to help my mom,” said George. “After my brother moved out, it was just me and my mom at home and we needed some money coming in. I started working at Cattleman’s Café, but it was a lot of work and my grades were suffering. During my sophomore year, Mr. Obie Rhodes came to me and said, ‘Hey, you’re struggling in your classes. I have a program that may help you graduate and keep your grades up.’ I took a leap of faith and entered his co-op program. I started working a half-day and going to school the other half. The Lord was sending me to HEB and this program helped me get my foot in the door.” George’s gregarious nature and love of helping others shines brightly in his demeanor, all traits that he is quick to thank his mother for. “I grew up in Alleyton,” shared George. “It’s a small town and the parents there are very old-school. If you did something wrong, the neighbor had permission to spank your butt. Then you waited on the porch for your mama to come home and spank your butt again. Every Sunday we went to church. We may not have had much money, but on Sunday my shirt was always tucked in and my tie was always on. My faith was instilled in me at a very young age Left, George Barnes, meat and it helped me. I wasn’t in a rush cutter at HEB, stands to go do something wrong. Mom ready to help customers was very strict with her discipline and share his zest for life. and she demanded that I be 14 | COLUMBUS, TEXAS

respectful - we all knew what we should do and how we should act. Mama worked at the jailhouse, cooking food for the inmates, and she’d tell me, ‘Don’t let me cook for you up here and at home.’” Today, George is married to the love of his life, Shannon, and together they have two sons. One of their sons attends Blinn College and the other is a sophomore at Columbus High School. These proud parents instill the same values into their boys that they both received growing up. “My wife was raised going to church, too,” added George. “My faith got a lot stronger because we really practiced it when I was growing up. We had to serve, cut the grass at church … we had to do something. And Mama would always ask us questions, so we had to make sure we were paying attention in church. As I got older, life got difficult at times and I had to buckle down on praying. That is what helped me be who I am today and that is what we teach our sons.” And there are situations that happen, even at HEB, when George feels

the need to send up a prayer or two. “It was maybe a year ago when I discovered a man living behind the store in the woods,” said George. “I wanted to help him and, you know when the Lord puts something on your heart, you just can’t shake it off. He said he needed a few things and I bought them, but I wanted to do more. I went to our store manager, Stephen Theiss, and asked him if we could help. Two days later I found a glove when I was throwing away trash and it was a perfectly good glove, so I thought I’d keep it and use it for something. The next week, I came to work and saw the man in our freezer, cleaning off ice from the merchandise. Stephen gave him a little job! I said, ‘Thank you, Lord!’ I quickly noticed he was using his bare hand to clear the ice and, lo and behold, I had the glove he needed. Isn’t the Lord good? It’s funny how things happen in this store. We are a family here at HEB. I’m proud to be a part of it.” HEB is located at 2105 Milam Street in Columbus. Look for George the next time you’re in the store. You can’t miss him … just look for the meat cutter with the huge, contagious smile.

GET OUTSIDE |

MICHELLE BANSE STOKES

For the Fun of It Wade Wheatley talks about his passion for powersports and the great outdoors. PHOTOGRAPHY BY EMILY HENDERSON The powersports industry is in high gear and it’s easy to see why. The exhilaration that comes with getting outside on an ATV, side by side, or dirt bike in search of wide-open spaces or remote tracks and trails is addictive. For those looking to unleash their next great outdoor adventure, Wade Wheatley of Columbus Outfitters and Columbus Cycle Shop stands ready to introduce customers to their new rides. And he’s been doing it for over 30 years. “We started here in 2003,” said Wade. “I was always involved in powersports products and I used to race Yamaha dirt bikes when I was younger. The guys I worked with before were looking to join forces with me and we wanted to open a powersports place. That was the beginning.”

Columbus was the perfect home for Columbus Outfitters and Columbus Cycle Shop and Wade couldn’t imagine being anywhere else. “Columbus is a great city,” shared Wade. “Both my kids were born here. My wife’s been a teacher here for 30 years. We live right in the middle of Columbus and enjoy the city. There’s a lot of great people here that enjoy the small-town life atmosphere. We’ll be here until the day I die. It’s also a great community to do business in. I always say that we’re the crossroads of everywhere. Being situated between Houston, Austin, and San Antonio … you’re going to pass us at some point. Customers have come Above, Wade Wheatley in and said, ‘I’ve driven by this place 100 welcomes everyone looking for outdoor adventure to times and always wanted to stop.’ When stop by. they stop, they see what we have, and

18 | COLUMBUS, TEXAS

I enjoy when people walk in the door. They’re smiling! Kids run over to one of the bikes or the ATVs. They’re walking in here happy to buy something that’s fun. that’s just the beginning of the relationship for us.” With a captivating smile, Wade is quick to talk about what motivates him day in and day out after all his years in the biz. “We focus on customer service like we have for years,” added Wade. ”That’s the number one thing to all of us. We want to make sure the customer is happy. I enjoy when people walk in the door. They’re smiling! Kids run over to one of the bikes or the ATVs. They’re walking in here happy to buy something that’s fun and are ready to sit down with a professional to learn about the products and help them figure out what they need to do to get going. It’s a pleasant working experience.” But Wade also knows he couldn’t do it all alone. Surrounding himself with talent is what has made Columbus Outfitters and Columbus Cycle Shop the success it is today. “Our staff is integral to everything we do,” shared Wade. “From our sales to our service department, I have the pleasure of working with some top-notch folks. Speaking of our service department, we’re proud to have certified guys that know exactly what they’re doing and fix it right the first time. It’s a blast to work around such happy, smiling people every day.” Of course, all work and no play would make for a pretty dull life for Wade. Somehow, he manages to escape the dealership on occasion to pursue his passions. “I spend a lot of time outdoors fishing, hunting, riding ATVs and side by sides,” said Wade. “And, of course, spending time with my family is vital. That’s the most important thing in my life, spending time with family. And when we’re outdoors, we’re using all the same stuff that we sell here. We sell it because I got tired of driving to Houston to buy it. That’s how we evolved into also selling hunting, fishing and camping gear. The House Patrons enjoy cozy times gathering with friends. PHOTOGRAPHY BY EMILY HENDERSON It’s easy to blend into the cozy vibe when you first walk across the quaint, covered porch of The House, a local hot spot for coffee, wine, simple eats, and gathering with friends. Although a newcomer to Columbus’ downtown scene, owner Sarah Koller is already creating a buzz around town for offering the perfect venue to recharge, relax and rewind. “In all honesty, these are the things I love to do in my free time,” shared Sarah. “This is a gathering place for the community. It’s a place to come hang out and meet friends, both old and new. We also have events, like our movie night. It’s Monday Night on the Lawn with a big blow-up screen and activities. Everyone is welcome to come out and bring chairs and blankets.” Deciding where to start her new venture was easy for Sarah. It was clear right away to her that The House had a home in Columbus. “I fell in love with Columbus and the personality of the community,” added Sarah. “This town checked all the boxes. I grew up driving past Columbus and not knowing how special it is. There’s the beautiful, historic courthouse, unique small businesses … I get goosebumps when I think about how special Columbus is. I hoped the community would embrace something like this and they have. It’s a good indication that we’re moving in the right direction.” Top, the front of The House; bottom, Sarah Koller of The House.

And Sarah is quick to point out that it’s the suggestions and encouragement of the community that keeps things fresh as The House evolves into a mainstay. “Everyone in Columbus has been so kind and welcoming,” said Sarah. “We are right in the middle of this great little melting pot. As we continue to grow, we’re bringing more events to the community. Local artist exhibits and little pop-ups that bring neighbors together and offer more reasons to come downtown. There are also wine pairings coming soon to The House. If there’s a need, and people seem to be interested in something particular, we’ll give it a try.” The House is located at 632 Walnut Street in Columbus.

Welcome to Beckey’s Café All-American dining experince in downtown Columbus. PHOTOGRAPHY BY EMILY HENDERSON Every small town in Texas used to have one. Cozy downtown diners, serving up homestyle fare with a smile, seem to be almost a thing of the past. Fortunately for Columbus, Beckey’s Café is a hold out. Offering the most all-American dining experience possible, Beckey Zajicek Divin and her son, Bennie Zajicek, along with their dedicated staff, serve up timeless nostalgia seven days a week. “One of our big sellers is our tomato basil soup,” shared Beckey. “It’s really my granddaughter’s favorite. She’s also the taste-tester for several of our dishes. Another favorite is our chicken and dumplings that have homemade dumplings. Many times, Benny makes the chicken and he does a really good job. The pies are all made right here and sometimes we run out of a lot of favorites. The blueberry pies have locally grown blueberries. We also bake chocolate, cherry, coconut meringue, apple and more. If you haven’t tried them, you just don’t know how good our pies are. And we don’t have any changes on the horizon. We’re just going to keep doing things the way we’ve been doing them.” 22 | COLUMBUS, TEXAS

“When I run specials, I found people are creatures of habit,” said Beckey. “For the longest time we always had smothered steak or beef tips A portrait of Beckey Zajicek hangs in the dining room. In addition on Thursday. About five years ago, to the café, she has a passion for photography and travel. I changed it to Tuesday and that confused everybody in town. So now we just leave it like it is. I used to worry that people would get tired of having the same food every week but they don’t. Consistency is our key to success.”

Beckey’s Café is located at 1237 Bowie Street. They are open Monday through Saturday from 7 a.m. to 2 p.m. and Sunday from 7 a.m. to 1 p.m.

Beckey’s Café has built a reputation for quality, creating a fan base out of locals and visitors alike.

If you haven’t tried them, you just don’t know how good our pies are.

“We have a lot of loyal customers that have come and gone over the years,” said Bennie. “Now, we’re also seeing a lot of new customers and visitors from the city, especially on the weekends. We’re the only place around that serves breakfast all day. Our regulars know our specials day-to-day by heart.” And those regulars get a heaping helping of conversation along with their meal. “We have some guys come in every morning and talk about everything from politics to cows,” said Bennie with a laugh. “They sit around and solve the world’s problems every day, same thing. JUST FOR KIDS |

MICHELLE BANSE STOKES

It Takes a Village Columbus’ child care centers leave a positive impact on the children they serve. A BRIGHTER DAY CHILD CARE CENTER Beverley McMillian of A Brighter Day Child Care Center has a long history of working with young children. Along the way, she’s built a strong reputation for meeting all children where they are in their journey of learning. “In May of 1986, I began working with the Early Childhood Intervention Program through the state,” said Beverley. “I did that for 17 years before opening a registered family home. In 2008, I opened a licensed facility. When I was working for the state, I realized that there are many children that do not have access to daycare. This was either because the family couldn’t afford it or the child had special needs. That is when my passion began. I feel that it is a blessing from God that I was given the experience that allows me to work with children with special needs. That gift also flows to other kids to be able to help them develop their fullest potential.” Each child at A Brighter Day Child Care Center receives individualized instruction plans and care in a secure environment. “Lesson plans are based on each child,” shared Beverley. “Even if that child has a developmental delay or special needs. I also teach this to my staff and we go to early childhood training to help each child reach their potential and achieve developmental success. I give credit to all our staff that works alongside me and collaborates with me. We help each other in unity with the children and their parents. That is what my goal has always been and will continue to be. My philosophy is to provide a loving, safe and nurturing environment for the children so they can have fun and learn.” A Brighter Day Child Care Center is located at 638 Bonham Street in Columbus.

LIL’ EINSTEIN LEARNING CENTER Lil’ Einstein Learning Center started with humble beginnings but quickly flourished into the asset to the community that it is today under the direction of owner and founder, Veronica King. “We started in March of 2018 with one small house and we grew and grew and grew,” shared Veronica. “I was a teacher and I worked in math intervention for over 11 years. Because of my education background, my goal is for our children to leave with a strong educational foundation. Those are the building blocks for success and it sets the tone for their life.” Veronica’s background in education started early for her at home. “My mom was an educator,” added Veronica. “I have a bachelors in elementary education and a masters in curriculum and instruction. Education is number one but we also have to make learning fun, not a chore. Plus, not everyone learns the same and we have to reach kids where they are. There’s no such thing as cookie cutter instruction.” The staff at Lil’ Einstein Learning Center are held to a high standard, going above and beyond the state’s requirements for training. This passion for providing outstanding education and care is what spurred the center’s growth. “Never in a million years did I think we would grow to this point,” said Veronica. “We’ve accomplished so much with the help of the parents and support of the community. It has been overwhelming. I am truly blessed.” Lil’ Einstein Learning Center’s main location is at 1217 Walnut Street in Columbus. Their baby center is located at 1022 Jackson Street.

COLUMBUS ON THE GROW

Everything’s Coming Up Tomatoes Special to Trips Publications - STACY RENNER OF TAKE ROOT PLANT NURSERY Before you even realize it, it’s time to start thinking about tomatoes. Packed with more flavor than the ones in the grocery store, garden tomatoes are fun to grow and a treat to our tastebuds. For those who find tomatoes too acidic, yellow tomatoes are more easily tolerated due to their low acid levels. The more experienced gardener might prefer a certain variety of tomato or, if very serious, start seeds in the house or a greenhouse. Plants can be started in late January or early February if they are protected from cold fronts and our crazy, Texas winds. You can find planting dates yearto-year in an Almanac or wait until February when the tomato plants start arriving at the plant nursery. Starting early helps to avoid worms, a year-round pest. If you are not able to nurse your tomatoes through the summer heat, fall tomato plants start becoming available in August and September. Tomatoes come in two different varieties: determinate and indeterminate. Determinate plants bear one heavy crop and then they are done. Indeterminate tomatoes are continuous bearers and get extremely large with many people cutting them back to harvest from again in the fall. Tomato growers will want to pay special attention to maturity dates to find a variety that best suits them.

Some of the smaller varieties you will find at Take Root Plant Nursery are great for salads, snacks and pasta salads. Look for these varities: Sweet 100, Cherry, Juliet/Grape, Yellow Pear, and Sungold. Varieties that growers choose for salsa, sauces, and grilling inlcude: Roma #2, Yaqui (a favorite), Better Boy/Big Boy, San Marzano, and Homestead. Larger tomatoes are farm favorites. The following are good for salsa, hamburger slices, and sandwiches: Celebrity, Black Krim, Phoenix, Lemon Boy, Beefsteak, and Early Girl. Heirlooms are classic beauties. In addition to being a great choice allaround, they are also popular for canning. At Take Root Plant Nursery you’ll find Brandywine, Old German, and Cherokee Purple. In addition to tomatoes, Take Root Plant Nursery also carries bulk garden seeds, vegetable starts, herbs, and plants that attract pollinators. To support the garden, they also carry bagged compost, organic and nonorganic fertilizers, landscape shrubs, seasonal colorful plants, indoor plants, and patio containers. Fruit trees arrive in December or January and citrus trees show up in late March.

When growing tomatoes, beware of blossom end rot. This is a common Take Root Plant Nursery is located at problem caused by a lack of calcium. Weed barriers are necessary to 180 Oak Cluster Drive in Columbus. keep all of your water and nutrients going to the tomato plants. Some gardeners prefer raised beds or use recycled molasses tubs. Another necessary element are bees and butterflies. They pollinate the flowers and do the dirty work for good production. In addition, soil samples hold the key to ensuring a balanced soil that will grow an abundance of beautiful tomatoes.

CHURCH LISTINGS

Worship in Columbus All of the area churches welcome you to worship with them. PHOTOGRAPHY BY LORI OLIVAREZ-LIGUES St. Anthony Catholic Church in Columbus is named after St. Anthony of Padua, one of the Catholic Church’s most popular saints. He was a Franciscan preacher and teacher. St. Anthony is typically depicted with a book and the infant child Jesus and is commonly referred to today as the “finder of lost articles.” He is venerated all over the world as the patron saint for lost articles, and is credited with many miracles involving lost people, lost things and even lost spiritual goods. The church started in 1854 with Father Victor Gury, stationed at Frelsburg. He was the first to minister to the people of Columbus. The first church structure was built in 1872 on land donated by the Tait Family and named in honor of St. Matthias. Parish records indicate that Father M. Orth arrived in the early 1870s. At this early date a school was established and conducted by the Sisters of Providence. In 1929, a disastrous fire in the church caused it to be unusable. A new church was built and was blessed on May 6, 1930. As a condition of a donation by the Catholic Church Extension Society, it was renamed in honor of St. Anthony. From 1930 to 1945 there was not a resident priest and the needs of the Catholic community were met by adjoining communities. Father V.J. Bily became the first resident priest of St. Anthony Catholic Church in 1945. A new rectory was built in 1948 and Father Alex Kraus became it’s first resident. Plans for St. Anthony Cemetery was finalized and the first burials occurred in 1950. During this time, a new school building was constructed. Source: http://www.stanthonycolumbustx.net/

SURROUNDING AREA

Meet the Neighbors MENTZ - St. Roch Catholic Church in Mentz deserves the short seven mile drive. The church has been serving the community of Mentz since 1858. A beautiful sight to behold, St. Roch Catholic Church is an active parish that holds Mass Saturday at 4 p.m., Sunday at 10:30 a.m., Thursday at 5:30 p.m. and Friday at 8 a.m. Mentz is a rural community in Colorado County, originally settled by German immigrants who named the settlement after their former homeland in Germany. WEIMAR - Weimar’s picturesque downtown bustles with businesses, shops, great eateries, antique shops and a tavern where locals play dominoes and German card games. Whistling Duck Vineywards and Winery offers award-winning wines, delicious appetizers and meal selections, and live music every Saturday. You’ll find them at 1211 County Road 273. FAYETTEVILLE - Some cyclists enjoy the rolling hills of Fayetteville’s countryside, pedaling past fields of grazing cattle, regal live oaks, and historic homes. Then there are cyclists that want to take a more adventurous approach, choosing gravel routes with water crossings and craggy challenges. The Rock ‘n Road 100 cycling challenge ticks both those boxes with their one-of-a-kind event that gives riders a choice between an epic gravel route or an amazing road ride that start and finish in downtown Fayetteville. The event is held every November. Another cycling event with a long history in Fayetteville is the Good Old Summertime Classic, always the first Sunday in June. SHERIDAN - Although there are many great reasons to travel 27 minutes south to Sheridan, Splashway Waterpark and Campground is a popular destination that you won’t want to miss. In addition to state-of-the-art waterslides and wave pools, Splashway offers cabin rentals, RV sites, tent sites and cottage rentals. From the minute you arrive to the minute you leave, Splashway focuses on providing you with more wholesome activities, family events and fun, and space to stretch out so your family can relax together and strengthen your ties. While you’re there, stop by the Sherican Dairy Delight for one of the best burgers you’ll ever have and splurge on their homestyle fries and a Coke float.
