STEPHEN F. AUSTIN 1793 - 1836 Stephen Fuller Austin, born in southwestern Virginia, is often called the Father of Texas. He also played a key role in the origins of the Texas Rangers, organizing one of the earliest groups that would later evolve into the famed law enforcement agency.

Standing Watch Over Austin County

A larger-than-life bust of Stephen F. Austin stands at the western edge of Bellville, serving as a bold tribute to the man for whom Austin County is named. Often called the “Father of Texas,” Austin played a central role in bringing the first Anglo-American settlers into Mexican Texas and helping establish the early foundations of the state. His leadership and vision shaped much of the region’s early identity, making his presence in Bellville especially fitting.

The sculpture was created by Texas artist David Adickes, who is known for his distinctive oversized busts of historical figures found across the state. Installed in the early 2010s, the piece was designed as both a landmark and a point of local pride, welcoming visitors into the county

Adickes, a Houston-based sculptor and painter, has produced dozens of monumental works, many of them depicting wellknown figures from American and Texas history. In Bellville, that signature style turns a busy highway intersection into a place of pause, where history and art meet in an unexpected way. Positioned in the median at the intersection of State Highways 36 and 159, just west of downtown Bellville, the bust is hard to miss. They become part of the weekly rhythm, part of family gatherings and part of the way people celebrate. In Bellville, one of those places is Bellville Meat Market. Located just off the courthouse square, the longtime market has served customers since 1981, building a reputation for fresh meats, smoked specialties and dependable service. For many locals, a stop there is as natural as picking up groceries or visiting neighbors downtown. Inside, the appeal is immediate. Cases are stocked with beef, pork, poultry and house specialties, while the aroma of barbecue and smoked sausage often greets customers before they reach the counter. The market describes itself as a full-service meat market focused on quality products and quality customer service, a straightforward promise that seems to resonate with generations of shoppers.

BELLVILLE LANDMARK “For generations, Bellville Meat Market has been a place where quality and tradition still matter.” What sets the business apart is not only selection, but loyalty. Customers talk about favorite items the way others talk about treasured family recipes. “Always excellent! Highly recommend the sweet chipotle pan sausage and links. I’m excited to try the new peppered bacon link sausage too. Picked up some of their excellent barbecue sauce as well. They never disappoint,” wrote Stacy Pepper in a Google review. y the time most of Bellville is pouring its first cup of coffee, one local lady has already been at work for hours. And somewhere behind an 1888 Victorian home, the scent of cookies and cakes drifts into the morning air.

Joy Wilson, better known to longtime readers as Joy the Baker, has spent years building a national following through recipes, cookbooks and her widely loved website. But in Bellville, she is known for something simpler: the woman making extraordinary baked goods out of a garage workshop and backyard cottage kitchen. Her monthly pop-up, The Bakehouse Texas, has become a local ritual. Timed with Bellville’s Market Day, the bakery draws neighbors, curious travelers and devoted regulars who line up for bakery boxes, buttermilk biscuits and oversized chocolate chip cookies with crisp edges and gooey centers. For Joy, baking began long before readers and road trips. It started at home. “I come from a long line of home bakers, and my dad was really the anchor of that when I was growing up,” she said. “There was always something cooling on the counter, always a reason to gather.” That early lesson still guides her work because baking, in Joy’s hands, is less performance than hospitality. For her, It is a pie on the table, a biscuit passed warm or a cookie handed over with both generosity and pride. She began sharing recipes online in 2008, never imagining how many kitchens she would eventually reach. What started as one baker posting recipes became a community of home cooks baking along with her from afar. Continued on page 18. Now, in Bellville, the story has come full circle. Instead of serving a digital audience, she gets to see people face to face.

“These days, I’m learning how to keep things small on purpose,” Joy added.

“There’s something really special about baking in a small town like Bellville,” Joy said. “What I love most is how people show up.”

That spirit is evident in every detail, from Texas-grown grains in her signature cookies to recipes tested multiple times before they ever reach the public. Joy says she hopes people feel taken care of when they taste something she made.

That sense of showing up matters to her. Bellville has embraced the bakery not as novelty, but as neighbor. And Joy speaks of that support with visible gratitude. She is also in a new season of life. Joy recently welcomed her first child and is easing into a softer summer schedule with farmstandstyle bakery boxes during Market Days. It is a gentler pace but still rooted in connection. Even success, she says, comes with choices. The challenge is not always how to grow bigger, but how to stay intentional. She has worked to keep The Bakehouse Texas personal, sustainable and true to its spirit.

It began with one child and one simple realization: every kid deserves summer. Coates originally attended college as a graphic design major, but quickly realized her heart was elsewhere. A professor encouraged her to explore recreation management, and one summer job at a specialneeds camp changed everything. SUZETTE COATES

“I spent one week out there in 2002 and I fell absolutely in love with it,” she said. “I was like, this is what I want to do.”

That passion eventually led her into special education, where she discovered a calling working with students with autism. One student in particular, a young boy named Marcus, opened her eyes to something missing.

Coates saw that while many children spent summers swimming, biking and playing with friends, Marcus spent long days at home with few opportunities for recreation or connection.

“My students didn’t have that,” she said. “Marcus definitely did not have that.” Sitting in her father’s living room in 2007, she announced that she was going to start a summer camp the next year. Her father grabbed the nearest scratch paper, a white paper plate, and began helping her sketch out ideas. In 2008, Camp Journey was born. The early years looked different than today. Coates organized day camps and vacation-style trips, taking campers to lakes, parks, the beach and fun destinations across Texas. She gave families muchneeded respite while offering campers experiences many had never had before. As Camp Journey grew, so did the need for a permanent home.

Coates often drove through Bellville on Highway 36 and noticed camp signs along the road. Something about the area stayed with her. Years later, while searching for a property, she discovered Camp Woodmen just outside Bellville. In 2018, after pitching their vision, Coates and her team purchased the property. “It was a gift from God that we were able to purchase that property,” she said. “It was like the stars and the moon and everything just aligned for us.” Today, Camp Journey has become a thriving seasonal camp serving campers with autism and other special needs. The property has been renovated while preserving many of its original features. New buildings have been added, and more are planned. Continued on page 26.

What matters most, though, is what happens every day campers arrive. “I think you would get to see those we serve getting to be themselves,” Coates said. “There’s no heavy limitations out there. We want everybody to have fun. We want everybody to experience everything.” Campers canoe, fish, swim, tube, dance, sing karaoke and build friendships. Some attend overnight sessions. Others are bused in for day camp from Katy so no one misses the opportunity. For Coates, the true reward is watching campers enjoy the same kind of carefree summer memories many families take for granted. “You would get to see them making friends and getting to have moments of connecting with somebody else,” she said. “That’s the true magic of it.” From a paper-plate business plan to a beloved Bellville camp, Camp Journey is proof that one person’s idea, backed by determination and compassion, can change lives. Where Bellville’s Traditions Shine THREE GENERATIONS, 50 YEARS AND A BELLVILLE BUSINESS BUILT ON TRUST By Michelle Banse, Photography by Gary Carpenter In Bellville, some businesses become more than storefronts. They become part of the fabric of the community. For nearly 50 years, Michele Jewelry has done just that, growing from a family dream into a trusted destination for fine jewelry, repairs and lasting relationships. In 1976, Dainty and Abner Jackson purchased the jewelry store, establishing a foundation rooted in service and quality. Their daughter, Michele Inglish, grew up in the store, learning the rhythms of the business from an early age. She later took over operations when her parents became ill and continued the family legacy after her mother’s passing in 1998. Today, Michele continues to oversee the business, while her daughter, Katlin Davis, represents the third generation, bringing new ideas and energy while honoring the foundation that was built before her. Katlin did not always plan to join the family business. She studied fashion merchandising and interior design in college and initially imagined a different path. But after returning home and stepping back into the store, her perspective shifted. “I came back and started working at the store with my mom and really loved it,” Katlin said. “We’re very close, so that part of it was great too.” Michele Inglish and her daughter, Katlin Davis, carry on the family tradition as owners and managers of Michele Jewelry in Bellville.

Since then, the two have worked side by side, evolving the business while maintaining its core identity. Michele now focuses primarily on bookkeeping and operations, while Katlin leads buying and plays a key role in custom jewelry design.

Over the years, Michele Jewelry has expanded beyond its original scope. What once centered primarily on traditional jewelry has grown into a full-service boutique offering fine jewelry, along with a variety of gifts and boutique items to better meet the needs of Bellville shoppers. The addition of an online store has further extended their reach, bringing customers from across the country.

In a business built on trust, relationships matter just as much as the products themselves. Michele recalls an early experience with a difficult customer who questioned whether his jewelry would be safe in her care. Instead of backing down, she addressed the situation directly and set clear expectations. Over time, that same customer became one of her most loyal.

Despite that growth, the philosophy behind the business has remained the same.

Moments like that have helped shape the business and reinforce its values.

“We base our business on honesty and being transparent with the customer,” Michele said. “That’s why people come from all over to shop with us.”

For both Michele and Katlin, the store is more than a job. It is a shared commitment to their family and their community. Katlin balances her work at the store with raising three children, often moving between the demands of the business and her kids’ activities. Michele spends her time outside of work attending her grandchildren’s events or playing competitive pickleball. Continued on page 32.

The connection between family and business is evident to customers as well. Katlin’s daughters already enjoy spending time in the store, offering a glimpse of what the future may hold. “It means a lot to me that she came back and wanted to be part of this,” Michele said. “This is our life. We work here, we live here and we’ve built that trust over time.” As Michele Jewelry approaches its 50th anniversary this July, the focus is on continuing that legacy. Plans for a celebration are in the works, along with a continued commitment to offering quality products and service customers have come to expect. For Terri Bright, walking into The Hill in Bellville as the new owner is more than a business decision. It is a return to something deeply personal. “It feels amazing,” Terri said. “I never in my wildest dreams thought I would own it.” Her connection to the restaurant began in 2003, when her parents Ken and Ruby Parker purchased The Hill after retiring and moved to Bellville to run it. What started as her father’s idea quickly became something much bigger for the family, especially for her mother, who poured her heart into the place. “My mom loved this place. It was her baby,” Terri said. At the time, Terri was raising her own family in Katy, but her children grew up visiting their grandparents at the restaurant, building memories that now feel even more meaningful. After her parents passed away, her father in December 2020 and her mother in February 2022, Terri learned the restaurant was for sale again. “I never in my wildest dreams thought I would own it.” TERRI BRIGHT, THE HILL The decision to buy it was not immediate. It unfolded over time, shaped by reflection, faith, and a sense that the opportunity carried deeper meaning. “Over the next three years and lots of prayer, I felt it was the right choice,” she said. Now back inside the same space her parents once ran, there are moments that still catch her off guard. “Standing in the same places my mom stood does make me emotional when I stop and let it sink in,” Terri said. Taking ownership has also come with responsibility, both to her family’s legacy and to

the Bellville community that has supported The Hill for decades. Open for 74 years, the restaurant has long been part of the town’s identity. “It has watched cars change and music change and styles change,” Terri said. “Meanwhile it has stayed pretty much the same.” That balance between preserving tradition and making thoughtful updates is something she is approaching with care. Regular customers can expect much of what they remember, along with a few additions. Bright has added breakfast selections, updated salads, added classic desserts like banana splits, and made small enhancements to the space, including a new patio television and vintage programming playing inside. Some of her efforts are also focused on reconnecting pieces of the past. “I’m trying to find my dad’s patty,” she said, referring to a recipe tied to her family’s earlier years at the restaurant. The transition into ownership has been busy and, at times, overwhelming. Alongside managing day-to-day operations, Terri is navigating the complexities of running a business while continuing to care for her family. “It’s a lot to learn all at one time,” she said.

Still, her focus remains clear. More than anything, she hopes to honor what her parents built and maintain the sense of familiarity that keeps people coming back.

For now, she is simply grateful to be part of it again, standing in a place filled with history, memory, and the steady rhythm of a small-town gathering spot that has stood the test of time.
