History of Bellville, Texas

BELLVILLE’S DIVERSE PAST WILL LURE ANY HISTORY BUFF TO TAKE A STOLL BACK IN TIME

Bellville, the county seat of Austin County, is at the junction of State Highways 36 and 159 and Farm Roads 529, 1456, and 2429, in central Austin County. Located in the heart of Texas, Bellville is a mere 64 miles from Houston, 104 miles from Austin and 55 miles from Bryan/College Station.

Being so close to the Colonial Capital of Texas of San Felipe de Austin, Bellville has its fair share of history that begins with the earliest Texas settlers. The town was named for Thomas B. Bell, one of Stephen F. Austin’s Old Three Hundred, who immigrated from Florida in 1822 and built a residence in the Bellville vicinity in 1838. In 1846 voters decided to replace San Felipe as county seat with a new community near the geographic center of the county. Bell donated 108 acres with his brother James Bell donating an additional 37.5 acres. A post office was opened in 1849 as well as a temporary log courthouse around the same time that was replaced in 1850 by a larger structure in the central square. During the early 1850s several merchants, including

Hermann Miller and a man named Strother, opened stores around the square. A new brick courthouse was begun in 1854.

The town grew slowly until the Gulf, Colorado and Santa Fe Railroad reached Bellville in the winter of 1879–80. Population increased from 300 to 522 in 4 months. Brick structures replaced wooden ones, and opulent Victorian homes were erected. By 1884 Bellville had two churches, two hotels, a bakery, a lumberyard, three saloons, twelve general stores, a public school, and two weekly newspapers, the Bellville Standard and the Austin County Times. Other signs of the town’s rapidly growing prosperity included a library in 1886, the construction of a new courthouse in 1887, and the opening of the first bank in the early 1890s.

The population, which reached 1,000 in the mid-1880s, was heavily German, and the town’s schools provided instruction in both English and German. The local Turnverein opened an opera house in 1889, and a decade later it built a large music

pavilion on the outskirts of town. In 2022, a major restoration project was completed on this historic building. The Turnverein Pavilion is again a popular event venue, among many others in the area. In 1891 a German-language weekly, the Bellville Wochenblatt, was published. The current weekly newspaper, The Bellville Times is in its 145th year.

In 1914 Bellville had two banks, a creamery, an ice plant, and telegraph and telephone connections. Oil was discovered in the county in 1915, and the development of the local oilfields further spurred the town’s growth. The Bellville Chamber of Commerce was chartered in 1923. By the early 1950s the population once again reached 2,000, and in the late 1980s it surpassed 3,000. In 1991 Bellville had 100 businesses; the largest share of receipts came from retail sales, light manufacturing, and oil production. The population in 1990 was 3,378 and in 2018 was 4,184.

AUSTIN COUNTY JAIL MUSEUM - The Historic Austin County Jail was built in 1896 at a cost of $19,970, and was a functioning jail until 1982.

Calling their old jail “unsafe, unfit, and inadequate,’’ the Austin County Court contracted in 1896 with Pauly Jail Building Co. of St. Louis to erect this structure at a cost of $19,970. Romanesque Revival style, with crenelated parapets, bartizans, and stone window arches harmonized with the 1886 courthouse, which later burned. The gallows, used only in 1901, have been removed; jailer’s quarters have been enlarged; but original exterior is preserved. It was a functioning jail along with being the sheriff and his family’s house until 1982. Recorded Texas Historic Landmark - 1976

The Austin County Jail Museum is a local visitor attraction open Saturdays and manned by volunteers. If you are interested in hosting tours at the Jail Museum one Saturday per month, please contact Don Allphin at 979-877-5642 or Bruce Noviskie at 713385-7141. The exhibits are fun and educational and your time will be a gift to you and to our county.

San Felipe de Austin State Historic Site and the new museum share the stories of early settlers in this region.

The original historic site, on the west side of FM 1458, contains seven blocks of the original capital with an 1830s hand-dug well, remaining as the only original architectural feature of the historic town.

THE STEPHEN F. AUSTIN STATE PARK is a beautiful Recreational Park which occupies 600 plus acres of moss draped pecan bottoms along the Brazos River. It occupies part of the land granted to Stephen F. Austin, “Father of Texas”, for the first Anglo-American colony in Texas. Near the park is an 18-hole golf course. The state park offers camping, hiking trails, birding, wildlife viewing, fishing, and group facilities. Phenix Knives

OLD-SCHOOL BLACKSMITH COWBOY SZYMANSKI SHARES HIS PASSION FOR TRADITIONAL KNIFE MAKING AND LOVE FOR BELLVILLE

Cowboy Szymanski, owner of Phenix Knives, has been forging and hand-crafting knives since 1997.

Growing up, Szymanski was drawn to knives and swords, influenced by his fascination with King Arthur, Robin Hood, and The Three Musketeers. He moved to Bellville in 2003, having done demonstrations there previously, ready to give back to the community. Opening Phenix Knives just made sense.

The shop was built in 1891 and operated for 130 years, first

as a blacksmith shop and later as a carriage shop. A lot of the tools that you see in the shop today are 100 to 200 years-old.

“We just keep the old trades alive and just have fun with it,” Cowboy said.

“The town asked me ‘What would it take to get you to move back here and start the old shop?’ I was like ‘cheap rent’ and they said ‘no problem,’” he shared with a laugh.

FORGED IN FIRE
Above, Joe McReynolds, journeyman, gives a knife forging demonstration.

Today Cowboy has three journeymen working for him and a variety of classes for the public.

Joe McReynolds, who was happily helping a young boy forge a knife when I first stepped in the shop, is one of those journeymen and has known Cowboy for quite some time. His son actually came into the shop when he was 12 years-old and wanted to learn the trade. He was a little too young so Cowboy told him he had to wait until he was 14 years-old and wait he did.

“On the day of his fourteenth birthday, he showed up and he started working for me for almost ten years,” Cowboy said.

Joe was in the oil industry and found himself laid off during the pandemic. His son, who was the reason he became involved with Phenix Knives, went off to Texas A&M University and later became a civilian consultant for the Marine Corps. Cowboy knew he needed more people working with him. He trained Joe three years ago and the shop just kept growing.

“I’ve got this incredible crew of guys that are all very good knife makers in their own respect and learning from me and improving and helping build this company. They’re all dads, they’re all scout leaders, and they’re all part of the community so they have this great attention to kids,” Cowboy said.

“We love doing these programs with all the kids,” he continued, talking about the shop’s class, Come and Make It, in which guests of all ages get a chance to forge their own knives and learn a little bit of history about the trade. “We love welcoming everybody here. We offer the tomahawk throwing, knife making, we do full extensive classes, bigger than the Come and Make it Program.”

Many years ago, Cowboy decided to create a program called Texas Select from Forged in Fire. He told the city he wanted to create the event and next thing he knew he had 18 ‘smiths from five states who wanted to participate.

“We thought it was just going to be Texas,” he laughed. “Next thing we know we had people coming in from Mississippi, Louisiana, Arkansas, Colorado, Oklahoma … these people are driving a long way to see Forged in Fire guys.”

Continued on page 18.

FORGED IN FIRE
Top, Cowboy Szymanski, owner, isn’t one to shy away from the fire; bottom, Flight of the Phenix - visitors can try their luck throwing tomahawks.

In 2023, the event had 151 bladesmiths, 36 vendors and 24 states represented. It’s now one of the largest knife shows in Texas and one of the largest custom makers shows in the country.

Ilena, his wife, helps Cowboy run the shop up front. She was a teacher for 30 years and has been at the shop since her retirement three years ago. One day the couple donated a knife to the Science Club to be raffled off and it led to Phenix Knives donating so much more.

“We give to the fire department, the Bluebonnet Society, and everybody we can help out. We try to be as generous as we can,” Cowboy shared. “We feel we are blessed. We have an insane group of guys that are family and we all get together and take care of each other. We have such a good community; we want to bring it to everybody else. We are always looking for a new way to bring something into town to give back to the community.”

His specialty is custom knives and he currently has about 16 months’ worth of backorders. This demand ensures

there’s a steady supply of knives being made each day.

Cowboy also offers knives from eight to ten additional knife makers all over the country to help with the backorders and to help those knife makers get their foot in the door. Cowboy doesn’t see them as competition, though. He sees them as his brothers.

“Everybody’s got a different style. So, this guy’s style might not be something that I really like to make, but it might be exactly what this other customer is looking for so we both win in that situation,” he said. “Competition is not a bad thing; it helps everybody grow.”

When asked for the meaning behind the name, Cowboy lit up.

“I love the legend of the Phenix,” he said. “It’s an old Egyptian legend about a firebird who lived 500 to 600 years, would build a big funeral pyre, and fan it with his wings until it burned to ash. From the ash arose a new stronger bird - a symbol of rebirth, immortality and beauty.”

“We take a piece of steel, we put it in a fire,” he continued, tying the legend to his shop. “It comes up to temperature, we forge it and born from fire it changes to something new. It’s a new arising, something stronger, beautiful and with the quality of product of what we do, hopefully it lasts forever.

“Many times in my life I have reinvented myself. I’ve realized, ‘this isn’t the path that I need to be going down. Let’s change who I am and grow.’”

Phenix Knives is family owned, and operated and Cowboy wouldn’t have it any other way.

“I think family makes everything stronger,” he said. “The family should be part of it. It’s what gives you strength. Where one person might stumble and everything gets a little weak, someone else will pick that up and it starts growing and growing from there. Everything we do is family.”

Phenix Knives is located at 305 E Main Street and online at www. phenixknives.com.

Newman’s Castle

DISCOVER WHY THIS BELLVILLE ICON IS THE BEST WAY TO CATAPULT YOURSELF INTO A MAGICAL REALM LIKE NO OTHER

A few miles outside of Bellville you’ll begin to see signs for Newman’s Castle. The arrows point guests with reserved tours down a winding, unpaved path that is lined with trees as tall as the road is long. As you get closer you finally see it - standing proudly, flags waving, bells ringing - you have arrived at Newman’s Castle.

Mike Newman purchased the 20 acres of land in the mid-90s. When he originally bought the land, he didn’t have a castle in mind. He simply knew that he wanted somewhere unique to call home. Inspired by his travels to Europe, a castle made sense.

“The word ‘castle’ came up and I started imagining having a castle on my land,” Mike said. “I drew some designs on a napkin and began working on my dream.”

But after meeting with several contractors, many of whom were skeptical about his project, Mike knew he was going to have to be the one to bring his 3,400-square-foot castle to life.

Above, the dining hall features an enormously long table, where visitors can sit a spell and enjoy their fresh, baked pastries and delicious sandwiches.

Today the beautiful castle is surrounded by a moat filled with lily pads, a retractable drawbridge and a catapult that can launch objects about 100 yards. Inside you can find a chapel, five round corner turrets, a courtyard, and a central keep with a dramatic view of the surrounding lands.

FAMILY FUN

Tours are available to the public Monday through Saturday allowing guests to explore the castle freely and lunch that includes delicious sandwiches and baked goods prepared daily at Newman’s Bakery downtown. The popular Bellville restaurant has been serving guests coffee, breakfast and more for nearly three decades.

When he is not working at the bakery, Mike calls the castle home. His chambers are available to the public for viewing. The swords that adorn the walls and unique medieval art make you feel like you have stepped back in time.

The tours are led by Jeff Faulk, a tour guide who has worked at the castle for nearly two years. He went to school with Mike and enjoys giving tourists brief history lessons, riling up the kiddos with mentions of dungeons and dragons (thirty of which can be found in random places throughout the castle) and enticing onlookers to submerge themselves in the experience.

Continued on page 24.

Top, a home fit for a king! Mike Newman sleeps, eats, and breathes Newman’s Castle. This is where he lays his head at night - surrounded by swords and medieval art; bottom, dozens of journals filled with hundreds of signatures from visitors from all over the world are proudly displayed in a bookshelf inside the castle.

FAMILY FUN

“We tell the kids that if you find thirteen dragons, which is a baker’s dozen, we give them a dragon stamp,” Jeff said. “The kids really enjoy the dragon stamps,” he laughed, as he stamped my hand to show me how it looked.

As I talked with Jeff, he enthusiastically pointed to different things in the castle that Mike built himself - like the wooden arches and the dining tables where visitors from far and wide enjoy their lunch. The shelves along the wall were lined with old family photographs so it really did feel like a home, despite the majestic surroundings.

Mike says the best part of it all is sharing his adventures and his castle with others throughout the tours. “It makes people happy. They leave with restored faith that they can do anything,” he shared.

Newman’s Castle attracts tourists from all over the world and they have the journals to prove it. Inside the castle there are journals upon journals that are filled to the brim with visitors’ names and locations, such as the Republic of the Philippines, China, Scotland, Hawaii, France, and Louisiana … just to name a few.

Newman’s Castle is available for day tours six days a week and for special events. Reservations are required and can be made through Newman’s Bakery.

BISD also aimed to create a space for community to gather, adding to the charm and attraction of our downtown square.

The building was originally built in 1909 as Austin County State Bank. Bellville ISD purchased the property in 2021. The funds to procure and renovate the building were generated through the sale of three properties the District had previously inherited. Design and renovations for the BISD Learning Center included creation of the Bellville

Community Museum to preserve historic components of the building including the original vault door and decorative ceiling tiles in addition to photos and artifacts showcasing the community’s unique history and economic development over time.

The BISD Learning Center is also home to select career and technical education programs for students in grades 6-12 including culinary arts, graphic design, entrepreneurship, and health science. At the BISD Learning Center, students also operate “Brahmas on the Square” which includes a student-run cafe and student-run store. Students from multiple programs including horticulture, floral design, construction, welding, art, graphic design, culinary arts, and entrepreneurship come together to create products featured throughout the building and sold through the cafe and store. The BISD Learning Center opened with students in the spring of 2023.

Bellville is an incredible community with an abundance of charm and character. “The Bellville Way” is one reflective of family, trust, and high expectations. BISD is proud to contribute to the continuation of traditions that make Bellville a great place to live and learn.

Residents and frequenters of Bellville will often see the celebration of our students’ accomplishments through the signs on the courthouse lawn and may be lucky enough to take part in our buses circling the square as we send off our talented students to regional, state, and national competitions.

Our BISD Brahma Family is blessed to be part of a community united in pride for our district and town. BISD invites local community members and visitors from near and far to experience our unique history and the warm embrace of our small town values and traditions by visiting the BISD Learning Center.

At the learning center, guests will find the walls filled with the history of our town and district captured through the

incredible talent of one of our student-artists and fabricated through collaboration with local vendors for signage and displays. Additionally, our rooms are filled with furniture pieces constructed by the talented students in our welding and construction programs.

Come explore the art gallery showcasing students’ creations, spend time exploring artifacts from our community’s unique history and learn things you might not have known before including BISD’s origin as the first public school district in Texas for unincorporated towns and cities, historic issues of The Bellville Times (one of the six longest standing newspapers in the state), insights into the history of Bellville becoming the county seat, and rumors of how the railway sparked one of the most well known rivalries in Texas.

Bellville Turnverein

Austin County has a true Texas treasure in the Turnverein Pavilion Gut Heil (good health). Queen of the many dance halls that liven the countryside of Austin County, the Turnverein Pavilion was the first of several designed and built by Joachim Hintz.

The Germans & Czechs who settled in the Austin County area in the early & mid-1800s kept alive the traditions of their old country. Practically every settlement, be it ever so small, had their hall or gathering place. They were home to “Vereins” or societies of widelyvarying interests … from gun clubs to singing groups.

In 1885 the Bellville Turnverein Gut Heil was formed by German immigrants – encouraging gymnastics (turnen) and athletics, a club (verein) for good health (gut heil). With the need for a place for community-wide social activities including physical exercise, dances, celebrations and meetings, they purchased the property in 1895 from the Social Club.

In August of 1897, a contract was let to German immigrant carpenter Joachim Hintz of Milheim to build a social hall. The hall, which seated up to 400 for dances, was completed in October of 1897 at a cost of $2,500. This innovative 12-sided wood-frame hall is 80 feet in diameter with elaborate, elegant roof supports with precision joinery, and utilized a central support pole, Hintz’s trademark.

Ghosts of the past abound in the pavilion. You can hear the oom-pah of the concerts and the swish of skirts as townfolk danced the Schottische. Outside, 2,000 people mingle around beer kegs, singing “Auch du Liebe” and exchanging stories. The building recently underwent a 1.3 million dollar restoration project including heating and air conditioning. It is now a popular venue option.

A toast to Bellville’s gathering spots

Wineries, breweries and the countryside! A tour of all of the hot spots in and around Bellville will prove to be a relaxing adventure that you will want to do again and again. Sit back, raise a glass, and toast the very best establishments in the great state of Texas.

Craving a cold one? You’ll want your first stop to be Huff Brewing Co., established with the mission to bring fresh beer to the Bellville area and all passersby. Their website confirms that, “We take the job seriously, too, indulging in the love and labor of the craft. And with that work comes reward: a cold beer at the end of the day best shared with those around us who deserve a beer themselves.

Huff Brewing Co. built its reputation on small-batch beers and a constantly rotating portfolio that changes with the seasons. The Huff family has been brewing beer on the property for more than a decade, and what was once a farmhouse chore

grew into a professional craft. Today, freshly-brewed beer is served in their taproom, Huff Brewing on the Square, with local food vendors onsite each week.

Next on our list is U-Bar Wines and Winery, a proud part of the Bellville community and also the popular Texas Independence Wine Trail.

Opened in 2020, U-Bar Wines and Tasting Rom is a familyowned winery off the beaten path, relaxing and quaint, deep in the heart of Texas.

Owner Edwin Ueckert shares on his website, “Built on land that has been in the family since the 1880s, the cattle featured on our bottles our own cattle that are managed under the Texas registered U-BAR brand.

Above, there is nothing more refreshing than a margarita on a hot, Texas day at 22 North Holland in Bellville.

CHEERS TO BELLVILLE

We can’t wait to welcome you to our winery for good times, good wine and absolutely amazing sunsets.”

Now it’s time to scoot over to Time To Chill Daiquiris To Go, where the name is only a tip of the iceberg. This establishment is known far and wide in the area for their famous po’boys, pizza, salads, crawfish and, of course, daiquiris. Patrons can use their handy drive-through or step inside and dine in. Their patio, complete with outdoor seating, welcomes guests to stay awhile and soak in some live music. Soon you and your partner will be two-stepping the night away!

You’ll want to follow Time To Chill Daiquiris To Go on Facebook to keep up with their entertainment schedule and specials. Their motto is, “Where friends become family.” No doubt you’ll feel like one of the bunch from the moment you walk in the door.

To round out your tour, we’re moving on to the beautiful Amsler Hills Winery. According to their website, “Kevin Lange grew up in Northern California and still has deep family roots in the Sonoma, Napa, and Lake County regions. Lisa’s ancestors (the Amsler family) were the founders and settlers of Cat Spring and Millheim, Texas.

Just as a family is united in love and becomes one flesh in Genesis 2:24, so too the Amsler Hills wines are blended into one bottle using grapes from both of our ancestral familial regions. We make wine that we love to drink, so if it doesn’t fit your palate that’s OK – we will just drink it all ourselves!”

The winery sits on 80-acres of historic Amsler family land dating back to the 1840s. Six generations have cultivated this land as it passed through five of those generations via the strong women of the Amsler, Hillbolt, Gross, Winkel, and now Lange families.

Amsler Hills Winery is also a popular venue. The rolling hills of bluebonnets and Indian paintbrush provide for stunning views to the west.

“We will be open for weddings, receptions, parties, and events starting late Spring 2023, focusing on inexpensive custom-built weddings.”

Thank you for coming along on this virtual tour. Now it’s time to get out there and indulge in all the best of Bellville. What are you waiting for?
