As our nation prepares to celebrate 250 years of independence, the City of Moulton takes time to reflect on a story that has been unfolding here for generations.

The Moulton community traces its roots to the early 1850s, when settlers established homes about two miles northwest of the town’s present location. Decades later, the arrival of the San Antonio and Aransas Pass Railroad brought new opportunities and a new direction. By 1887, the community gradually relocated to be closer to the railway station, laying the foundation for the Moulton we know today.

Throughout the years, the people of Moulton have adapted to change while preserving the values that matter most: faith, hard work and a strong sense of community. Farms became businesses, neighbors became lifelong friends and traditions were passed from one generation to the next. The story of Moulton is not simply one of buildings and dates, but of the people whose dedication shaped this town and ensured its future.

HISTORY OF MOULTON

History of Moulton, Texas:

A Community Built on Heritage and Service The history of Moulton is a story of pioneers, immigrants, educators, farmers and veterans whose contributions helped shape both the community and the nation.

The town traces its roots to the mid-1850s, when settlers established a community about two miles northwest of present-day Moulton.

The post office opened in 1855, and early residents built schools, churches and businesses that served a growing agricultural region.

In 1874, M. H. Allis founded the Moulton Male and Female Institute, a respected school that drew students from throughout the area and helped establish Moulton as an educational center in Lavaca County.

The arrival of the San Antonio and Aransas Pass Railroad in 1887 transformed the community. A depot known as Topeka was built southeast of the original townsite, and businesses gradually relocated closer to the railroad. By the end of the 19th century, the community had shifted to its present location and once again became known simply as Moulton. During this period, German and Czech immigrants settled throughout the area, helping create the cultural traditions that remain an important part of community life today.

One of Moulton’s most significant historic sites is Old Moulton Cemetery, located near the original townsite. The cemetery is believed to date to 1855 or 1856 and has been recognized by the Texas Historical Commission. The earliest documented grave is that of Louisa Lattimer, who was buried in 1857. Over the years, the cemetery has become a remarkable record of the region’s history,

preserving the stories of pioneer families, former slaves, children lost to 19th-century diseases and generations of local residents.

The cemetery also reflects Moulton’s deep military heritage. Among those buried there are veterans of the Texas Revolution, the Civil War, World War I, World War II, the Korean War and the Vietnam War. Their graves serve as a reminder that residents of this small Texas community answered the call to service across nearly every chapter of American and Texas military history.

That tradition of service continues today. Local veterans organizations, including Geier-Merrem American Legion Post 392, work to preserve the stories of those who served while honoring both living veterans and those who made the ultimate sacrifice.

Memorial Day and Veterans Day observances remain important community traditions, bringing residents together to recognize the men and women who defended the freedoms Americans enjoy today.

As the United States celebrates its 250th anniversary in 2026, Moulton offers a unique connection to the nation’s past. From pioneer settlers and immigrant families to military veterans and community leaders, generations of residents have contributed to a legacy built on hard work, faith, education and service.

Old Moulton Cemetery preserves the stories of the community’s earliest settlers, pioneer families and military veterans. The cemetery includes the graves of veterans from the Texas Revolution, Civil War, World War I, World War II, Korea and Vietnam, reflecting generations of service and sacrifice.

OLE MOULTON BANK offers visitors a unique blend of local history and small-town character inside one of Moulton’s most recognizable historic buildings. Constructed in 1900, the building served as a bank for more than 90 years before closing in 1993.

Purchased by Jim “Poison” Mendenhall in 2001, it reopened as Ole Moulton Bank in 2004, preserving many of the building’s original features, including the historic bank vault. PAVLAS TAVERN has been a gathering place in downtown Moulton since 1959, when George and Vlasta Pavlas purchased the business and began serving customers with the hospitality that has become its hallmark. DON GONZALES SADDLERY brings traditional craftsmanship to downtown Moulton through custom saddles, leather goods and leatherworking education. Founded by saddle maker Don Gonzales in 2004, the business built its reputation on producing high-quality custom saddles and handcrafted leather products for working cowboys, ranchers and horse enthusiasts. In 2020, Gonzales relocated the business and his family from Bryan to Moulton, choosing the small-town community as the new home for both his workshop and growing educational programs.

Today, Don Gonzales Saddlery operates from a historic downtown building where visitors can see a working leather shop, browse handcrafted products and learn about the art of saddle making and leathercraft. For Commander Robert Nieto, the American Legion represents far more than a veterans organization.

Founded in 1942 during World War II, the post was established by local veterans who wanted to create a place of mutual support as young men from the area left to serve overseas. Today, the post welcomes veterans from every generation, from World War II through post-9/11 conflicts.

“We take our names from local heroes who made the ultimate sacrifice,” Nieto said. “Over the last 80-plus years, the post has evolved from its World War II origins to welcome veterans from Korea, Vietnam, the Gulf War, post9/11 conflicts, and everything between, keeping the torch lit for every generation.”

The Legion’s mission extends well beyond supporting veterans. Members sponsor youth programs, assist with local schools, provide scholarships, host fundraisers and volunteer throughout the community.

“Beyond our veteran-specific work, we function as a service hub for the entire community,” Nieto said. “In a tight-knit community like ours, if there is a neighbor in need or a civic project that needs hands, the Legion is there to help lead the charge.”

Preserving local history is another important part of the post’s work. Rather than allowing military service to become a distant chapter in a history book, members work to keep those stories visible and relevant.

“We don’t just keep history in textbooks,” Nieto said. “By showing the next generation the real faces, names and families behind the freedom they enjoy right here in their hometown, we transform abstract history into a proud, local legacy.”

That commitment is especially visible each Memorial Day. For Legion members, Memorial Day is among the most sacred observances of the year. One of Moulton’s most recognizable traditions is the Avenue of Flags, when members line the town’s main street with American flags. The community also gathers at City Cemetery for a memorial service honoring those who gave their lives in military service.

“When you look down our main street on Memorial Day morning and see the Avenue of Flags catching the Texas breeze, you see the true soul of Moulton,” Nieto said. “When the community stands shoulderto-shoulder with our veterans to honor the fallen, there is no division, just shared respect, gratitude and a deep understanding that we are all part of one big family.”

Veterans Day carries a different purpose. While Memorial Day honors those who never came home, Veterans Day recognizes all who served.

“It is critical for communities to continue recognizing those who served because a town that forgets its veterans loses its anchor,” Nieto said. “It teaches our young people that a strong community is built on the willingness of its citizens to sacrifice for the common good.”

As commander, Nieto oversees meetings, community projects and fundraisers, but he says the greatest rewards come from simple moments of connection.

As America continues into the next 250 years, Nieto hopes younger generations will embrace the same spirit of service that has sustained both the nation and small communities like Moulton.

“Freedom is a relay race, and the baton is being passed to you,” he said. “Whether you serve in the military, step up as a first responder, volunteer in Moulton, or simply look out for your neighbors, find a way to serve something larger than yourself. That is how we ensure America thrives for another 250 years.”

A Lifetime of Service and Patriotism MOULTON NATIVE REFLECTS ON MILITARY SERVICE, AMERICA’S FUTURE AND THE VALUES THAT HAVE GUIDED HIM FOR MORE THAN SIX DECADES When Brig. Gen. James E. Freytag looks back on a distinguished Air Force career that spanned most of the Cold War and the dawn of the space age, he credits many of the lessons that shaped him to his upbringing in Moulton.

“Obviously I’m a little biased, but I think Moulton did a great job,” Freytag said. “Things like team sports and FFA, where I farmed 43 acres during my junior and senior years in high school, helped prepare me.”

A 1959 engineering graduate of Texas A&M University, Freytag went on to serve in a variety of leadership roles throughout the Air Force, including assignments involving advanced missile systems, satellite communications, Air Force laboratories and strategic defense programs. His career took him from engineering projects to command positions within some of the nation’s most important technology initiatives.

Yet he remains humble when discussing those accomplishments.

“I was fortunate to have the opportunity to lead and command highly sensitive operations while working alongside many outstanding professionals,” he said. “I thoroughly enjoyed my career. It is difficult to identify a single assignment as the most interesting because each role contributed valuable experience and expanded my knowledge and expertise.”

As America prepares to celebrate its 250th anniversary in 2026, Freytag believes patriotism remains as important today as it was when he first entered military service more than 60 years ago.

“Very seldom do you find a veteran that has served in the military that is not patriotic and a good citizen,” he said. “I think that is instilled in you as a service provider and a love for your country.”

That love of country remains deeply personal.

BRIG. GEN. JAMES E. FREYTAG Freytag is equally optimistic about America’s future.

Having spent decades working on advanced technologies, he has witnessed firsthand how innovations once considered futuristic eventually became reality.

“As commander of laboratories, we were working on artificial intelligence, or AI, in 1983, and it’s just now coming to the forefront,” he said. “People think it’s something new, but I’ve seen what it can do for a long time. The future is very bright for where we’re headed as a country.”

Still, he believes the nation’s success depends on remembering the lessons of history and preserving the principles established by the nation’s founders.

“The younger generation needs to spend more time understanding our history,” Freytag said. “The Cold War was a big feat in itself, and we won the Cold War. Nobody said much about it, but it was important.”

He also believes Americans should remain committed to the values that have guided the nation for nearly 250 years.

“We need to make sure that we stay a free and independent nation and follow the Constitution as it was laid out by our forefathers,” he said. “That’s why the 250th is so important.”

Those same values have guided Freytag throughout his life.

“I learned a lot in the Corps of Cadets at A&M, and I applied those lessons through my military career and even my time in civilian industry,” he said. “Core values like honesty, integrity and service to your fellow man are things you have to carry with you.”

Looking ahead, Freytag hopes future generations never take America’s success for granted.

“You must always remain vigilant about what is happening in our nation and around the world,” Freytag said. “The strength of our country depends on each generation accepting the responsibility to preserve the freedoms and opportunities entrusted to us. As President Ronald Reagan often reminded us, we are always just one generation away from losing those freedoms. If our nation reaches its 300th anniversary strong, free and united, then I would say we have done our job.”

Chief Daniel Beyer: A Career Built on Service AFTER MORE THAN THREE DECADES IN LAW ENFORCEMENT, MOULTON’S POLICE CHIEF REMAINS FOCUSED ON PROTECTING HIS COMMUNITY AND LEAVING THE DEPARTMENT STRONGER FOR THE NEXT GENERATION When Chief Daniel Beyer talks about law enforcement, he does not begin with badges or patrol cars. He starts with his mother.

“My mom said, ‘Get out,’” Beyer said with a laugh. “I had to get a job, and law enforcement kind of found me.”

Beyer began his career in 1991 and earned his Texas peace officer license in 1992 while working for the Lavaca County Sheriff ’s Department. After two years as a deputy, he joined the Moulton Police Department in 1995 and has never truly left. Today, he is serving his fourth term as police chief after a career that included both law enforcement and 17 years with Child Protective Services.

A job as a jailer led to a career that would span more than 30 years.

Along the way, his twin brother also entered law enforcement and continues to serve today.

For Beyer, the greatest reward has been serving the town he calls home.

“I’m blessed that I’ve been able all these years to keep my little corner of the world safe,” he said. “When the criminal element moves into Moulton, it’s noticed immediately.”

Because Moulton is a small town, Beyer believes officers have an advantage when it comes to protecting the community.

His path into law enforcement was anything but planned.

“If you want to move into Moulton and be a productive citizen of our community, we welcome you and we will help you,” he said.

“We’re here to serve you. But if you want to do drugs, steal from your neighbors, or cause havoc, we’ll identify you and give you our full attention.”

“When we graduated high school, my mom came to us two weeks later and said, ‘My job is done. Y’all need to go find somewhere else to live,’” Beyer recalled. “She wasn’t sending us off to college or letting us stay in the basement. She meant it.”

Beyer has raised four children in Moulton and spent nearly 20 years serving on the local school board. His connection to the community runs deep, which is one reason he returned to the department full time after retiring from CPS.

Those officers are helping lead the department into a new era.

Plans are underway for a new police facility, along with new patrol vehicles and equipment funded through grants.

“Being the chief of police in Moulton, Texas, it’s not a job. It’s literally a marriage,” he said. “You’re never off. My phone has to be with me all the time. We have a commitment to provide law enforcement to our community 24 hours a day, seven days a week.

If I don’t have an officer who can do that, then I’m going to do it.”

“My legacy will be this police department that will be built next year,” Beyer said. “I’ve always wanted to leave the department better than I found it, and right now I’m well on the way to making that happen.”

For Beyer, service has never been about recognition or a paycheck.

It has always been about the town he has spent more than three decades protecting. When asked how he hopes to be remembered, his answer was simple.

As America continues to celebrate its 250th anniversary, Beyer remains proud of both his profession and his community. After more than three decades in uniform, his commitment has not

Volunteer Spirit:

Nearly a Century of Service For nearly a century, the Moulton Volunteer Fire Department has protected the community through the dedication of neighbors serving neighbors. Since 1994, Fire Chief Tim Koncaba has led the department while continuing a family tradition of service that began with his father, who volunteered as a firefighter for 65 years.

Today, the department’s volunteers respond to structure fires, grass fires, vehicle accidents and other emergencies throughout a 10-mile service area, relying on grants, donations and an annual raffle to help fund equipment and maintain a modern fleet.

“We’re our own entity. We find some grant money or use donations.

And so we just make it happen,” Koncaba said. “Everybody always said, ‘Do y’all have a budget?’ No, we don’t have a budget. Whatever you can get together, that’s your budget. Our checkbook is our budget.”

As the department completes its new fire station and a new generation of volunteers steps into leadership, the Moulton Volunteer Fire Department remains committed to protecting lives, property and the small-town values that have defined the organization for generations.

The Moulton American Legion Post 392 celebrated its 100th birthday in 2019 and was named for two WWI soldiers killed during that great War. THE MOULTON POLKA FEST is an annual February fundraiser hosted by the Moulton Chamber of Commerce at the St. Joseph Social Center. The event celebrates the area’s Czech and German heritage with a full day of live polka music, dancing, great food and fellowship. FLATONIA Just 20 minutes south, Flatonia is a railroad town with deep roots in Texas history. Be sure to visit the Flatonia Rail Park and Central Texas Rail History Center, where historic rail equipment, exhibits and the restored Tower 3 tell the story of the town’s role as an important railroad crossroads. The historic downtown also offers unique shopping, dining and beautifully preserved architecture.

SHINER About 20 minutes west of Moulton, Shiner is home to the impressive SS. Cyril and Methodius Catholic Church, one of the largest and most recognizable churches in Texas. Completed in 1921, the twin-spired landmark is known for its stunning stained-glass windows, intricate artwork and beautiful Gothic Revival architecture.
