Schulenburg is a well-positioned small town in Fayette County, recognized for its strong heritage, strategic location and steady economic activity. Conveniently located along Interstate 10 between Houston and San Antonio, Schulenburg sits within one of the most active corridors in Texas. Founded in 1873 and incorporated in 1875, Schulenburg developed as a railroad town along the Galveston, Harrisburg & San Antonio Railway, now part of Union Pacific. As of 2026, the estimated population of Fayette County is approximately 25,417, reflecting a slight increase from the 2020 Census count of 24,435. The county has seen gradual growth since 2010, with 2025 estimates placing the population at 25,459.

PAINTED CHURCHES
The Painted Churches open to the public are located in the communities of Dubina, High Hill, Praha and Ammannsville. The communities of St. John and Moravia also have Painted Churches that may be viewed by guided tour only. From the outside the buildings appear simple, but stepping through the doors reveals breathtaking interiors filled with remarkable color and detail.
All of the churches remain active parishes and hold services on Saturdays and Sundays. Visitors may tour the churches Monday through Saturday from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., but should always be respectful of any services or events taking place.

THE
SCHULENBURG ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT CORPORATION plays an important role in supporting business growth, community improvement and long-term economic opportunity in Schulenburg. Created in 1997, the organization works on behalf of the city to encourage commercial, industrial and manufacturing development while helping strengthen the local economy and quality of life.
Located at the crossroads of Interstate 10 and Highway 77, Schulenburg offers businesses strategic access to Houston, Austin, San Antonio and Victoria. The EDC promotes the city’s central location, dependable workforce and affordable utilities as key advantages for companies looking to expand or relocate.
The organization also provides practical support for local businesses through several incentive programs. Since 2020, the Schulenburg EDC has awarded more than $400,000 in grants and more than $1 million in low-interest loans to support projects
ranging from infrastructure improvements to small business growth.
One of the EDC’s most visible efforts is its Beautification Grant Program, which helps business owners improve storefronts, signage, landscaping and exterior appearance. The matching grant program is designed to encourage investment in the community while enhancing the look and feel of Schulenburg’s business districts.
The Schulenburg EDC works closely with the City of Schulenburg, Schulenburg Chamber of Commerce and local financial institutions to support economic development efforts and community partnerships. Through business assistance, local investment and community-focused programs, the organization continues working to help the entire area grow while maintaining the small-town character that makes the Schulenburg community unique.
