Thrift Shop: Retail Store Manager

Background The Golden Rooster Thrift Shop, is located at 9108 John Mosby Hwy. Upperville, VA 20184, and is an outreach project of Trinity Episcopal Church, Upperville, VA. The shop is well established locally having been established for over 30 years. It is well supported by donors and purchasers alike, and enjoys a prominent retail location, alongside Route 50, John S. Mosby Hwy, centrally located within Upperville village.

All profits raised from Thrift Shop sales go directly to the Trinity Church Outreach Program which supports local, national, and international causes and individuals who are most in need of financial assistance. During 2021 outreach grants totaling $46,808 were made to causes including Trinity Church Food Closet, Northern Virginia Therapeutic Riding, By His Wounds - Nigel Mumford Therapy for Vets, Piedmont Child Care Center, Second Mile Haiti: Earthquake relief, Christ Episcopal, Bowling Green, KY., Tornado Relief, Helping Haitian Angels Capital fund for Middle and Trade School, and Tree of Life Church, Purcellville Bi-monthly meal serving. Our local assistance program has supported those needing help to pay electricity, fuel, rent and emergency healthcare costs.

The Vestry of Trinity Church has decided to embark upon a plan to develop operation of the Thrift Shop further, by extending regular opening times, creating an online sales presence, redesigning stock handling/sorting systems, and representing merchandise within the shop premises in new, interesting, and engaging ways. Current open hours of the Golden Rooster Thrift Shop are each Saturday 9:00am – 12:00pm and it is envisaged that opening will be expanded to include hours on a Thursday, Friday and Sunday, each week. Previously, all shop hours have been staffed by a small, willing band of volunteers. This new role of Retail Store Manager will be the only paid position connected to the Thrift Store. A significant and important part of development plans includes retention, recruitment, and training of an expanded volunteer team and this will be a key-task led by this post-holder.

Role This new positon of Retail Store Manager will work on site at The Golden Rooster Thrift Shop, Upperville, to lead a team of volunteers and handle the administrative and managerial duties of running a store.

You will ensure that the shop is stocked with the correct amount of merchandise and adjust the store layout to display in-demand items. You will work with representatives of Trinity Church Vestry and the Director of Operations & Communications to develop strategies to meet sales targets and plan communications and promotions to attract business.

You will be responsible for ensuring the effective working of volunteers, for their training, development and safe working. You will (along with the volunteer team) provide exceptional customer service and interact warmly and positively with both customers and donors.

Key duties 



   



Develop and implement written procedures for store operations, including opening, and closing the store; procedures for accepting, sorting, pricing donations; security procedures for staff and volunteers, handling of cash, and other relevant procedures as needed.

Oversee the processing of donated items; manage the rotation of items and the disposal of donated items in a timely fashion. Processes include: sorting, hanging, tagging, steaming, displaying and disposing of donated items.

Manage monthly budget, maintaining supply inventories.

Control petty cash, ensuring appropriate expenditures and receipts.

Ensure that all sales transactions (cash, checks, credit cards) are handled properly and in line with cash handling procedures.

Provide ongoing financial reporting to the Vestry Treasurer. Be aware and have knowledge of daily, weekly and monthly sales performance, percentage of sales goals reached and overall operation of the store.

Identify maintenance problems at the store and communicate needs to the Director of Operations to ensure a safe, pleasant, and clean working environment for staff, volunteers, and customers.

Conduct daily safety inspections by walking the store before opening to make sure floors are free of potential hazards.

Support volunteers and staff on the sales floor with customer conflicts, pricing issues, etc.

Supervise volunteers; provide ongoing feedback to improve productivity and job satisfaction.

Provide inspirational leadership to volunteers and support with guidance and training.

Develop schedules for paid staff and volunteers to ensure appropriate levels of volunteer coverage to both reach the store’s financial goals and be able to provide excellent customer service.

Analyze sales and current inventory in order to provide projections and recommendations to retain customers and increase sales.

Working with the Director of Operations & Communications to develop and implement marketing campaigns for the store that will directly influence sales, donations and volunteer morale. This includes use of social media, website, etc.

Implement regular store promotions with assistance from volunteers.

Skills, Experience & Qualifications  Skills:  Proactive in-store planning skills.  Self-motivated leadership.  An aptitude for creative project development.

 An “ideas” person; and open to new ideas from others.  Volunteer recruitment and management experience.  Interpersonal communication skills.  Strong sales abilities.  Customer service skills.  Organization skills.  Product /merchandize presentational skills.  Ability to operate basic IT software programs.  Basic online sales experience an advantage.  Must be punctual and timely in meeting all requirements of performance.  Experience  The ideal candidate will have a combination of experience including supervision, sales, customer service, basic IT, website/social-media communications, retail, general office or accounting work.  Qualifications:  Formal certificates in areas such as marketing or business will be viewed favorably, as are formal qualifications from other disciplines which might be considered to be “transferable”. However, formal qualifications are not considered to be essential for this role with equal consideration being given to previous experience.

Terms & Conditions 

 

Hours: 19 hours per week, over 4 working days: Thursday, 10:30am-3:00pm; Friday, 10:300am3:00pm; Saturday, 9:00am-3:00pm; Sunday, 12:00pm-4:00pm. (hours of work to be reviewed after six months, and again after twelve months employment, to ensure operational requirements are being best met).

Salary: $23.00 per hour x 19 hours. Paid monthly.

Annual leave: 8.5 days (or 59.5 hours) per annum.
