Position Title: Associate Priest / Curate Full-time; Exempt About Us Picture yourself in one of the most beautiful regions on the east coast. Just an hour away from the life and excitement of Washington D.C., 45 minutes away from Dulles Airport, and with great road links to wider Virginia and to neighboring Maryland and West Virginia, Trinity Episcopal Church enjoys breathtaking surroundings and a beautiful campus.

Upperville is a small, rural community located between larger Middleburg, Winchester, and Marshall and Trinity Episcopal is right at its heart, enjoying a prominent location adjacent to Route 50.

Trinity draws its growing congregation from a wide area and has an even wider diaspora. As a notable historic church buildings and campus it is known and loved by of friends and supporters nationally and internationally. Northern Piedmont is “horse-country” and (increasingly) a well-regarded wine region, too. We’re located on the edge of the Shenandoah Valley and we work and minister here with the Blue Ridge Mountains as our backdrop throughout the ever changing seasons.

But don’t let this tranquility fool you! This is a busy place for those engaged in ministry. We have navigated our way through Covid-19 with creativity and energy and as a result have emerged strong and ready for the next chapter of God’s story here. We have growing congregations (ASA 140-170) and are in an exciting stage of renewal, especially evident in the number of younger families joining our membership and a significant number of new pledging members, too. We aim to cater for a broad range of worship styles at our 8:00am, 10:30am, and 5:00pm services, as well as on Wednesday’s at 12:00pm. There is a strong and growing choral tradition here which supports the 10:30am service, although musicians and choristers also support many of our other services and special events, too.

Our 5:00pm service is a recent, popular innovation: Celtic Evening Prayer & Eucharist, which we hope will develop a life and witness of its own, as a complementary addition to our other worship. Many of our pre-Covid 19 activities have restarted with new energy and life. We have a well-respected outreach program, a Thrift Shop, a popular online Christmas Auction and a wellloved annual Stable Tour which attracts visitors from considerable distances. We have a small, enthusiastic team who have been developing our work with children and young people, and our young folk currently meet each Sunday in two groups: Trinity Kids (up to grade 6) and One-Eighty (6 grade +).

You will join an energized and committed staff team comprising Rector, Director of Operations & Communications, Director of Music Ministries and Organist, Administrative Assistant, Sexton, and House-Keeper. We are a relatively new team, but with considerable wider experience of parish ministry. We blend together diverse and varied traditions and experience of church and faith, and we believe that we all the stronger for that, and we manage difference well. We are team who, with our Vestry, are leading our church into, and through, a time of exciting change, which we are well-aware will come with great challenges as well as exciting opportunities.

About You General Role Description: You will share in all the liturgical, pastoral, educational and administrative ministries of the parish, with a key role and focus of developing Family Ministry. Using theresources available to Trinity and the parish, you will plan, organize, lead and execute a comprehensive young people’s program that fulfills the spiritual needs of not only Trinity members, but reaches into the communities well beyond the church walls.

Your Principal Duties: You will share with the Rector, as fully as is possible, in all aspectsof parish life. You will work no more than a five-day week, except when pastoral duties or important parish events take precedence. The Associates days off will be determined upon mutual agreement with the Rector in order to provide the parish with continuous pastoral care.

Some of your responsibilities include: Family Ministry: Working closely with the Rector and our volunteer teams, you will be play a key role in establishing a regular program of activities for children, youth and young family educational opportunities. These will include, but are not limited to children’s Sunday School groups, youth groups, Confirmation preparation, acolytes’ ministry, VBS /summer day or residential camps, new worship opportunities for children and young people, youth retreats, young family small groups, and other activities as requested by the Rector. You should also explore opportunities for collaboration in the area of ministry with children and young people, with other churches and community organizations. (through Churches of Upperville and with neighboring Episcopal parishes).

Sunday, and Mid-Week Worship: You will share in leadership of worship services, including celebrating the Eucharist following ordination to the Priesthood, andwill preach regularly across our range of services, both on Sunday’s and mid-week.

Committee responsibilities: 

Youth and Children’s leaders & volunteers – develop and work with parents andvolunteers training them to reach and to grow children and young people in faith.



Worship – Develop, with staff, existing opportunities for engagement with acolytes, youth choir, and creatively develop with others, further worship opportunities for children and youth.



Outreach – engage and seek creative, engaging, and fun involvement of Trinity’s children and youth with the Trinity Outreach Program.

Pastoral Ministry: You will develop pastoral relationships with the congregation and, when needed, will participate in pastoral visits to hospital, shut-ins, theinfirm, and those otherwise in need of pastoral care as requested by the Rector.

Meetings: You will participate in staff, Vestry meetings, and other committee meetings as needed, as well as occasional staff and Vestry retreats.

Service: You will be active in service to the greater church and community,especially through work with and on behalf of the Convocation, the Diocese and the National Church.

Minimum Qualifications:      

Demonstrate the ability to connect with people of varying ages and backgrounds Experience in parish work Demonstrate organizational skills and strength in verbal and writing skills Undergraduate degree; graduate-level ministry and pastoral education Proficient in Office 360 and willing to learn communication and management systems Safe Church certification
