MINUTES Trinity Episcopal Church Upperville, Virginia DRAFT Minutes of the Annual Meeting, held on Sunday, January 29, 2023 The congregation convened for the Annual Meeting in Cox Hall at 9:00 a.m., following the 8:00am worship service and before the 10:30 service. The voting polls had opened at 9:00 a.m. in the Cox Hall vestibule and would close at 11:30 a.m.

Opening Prayer The meeting was called to order at 9:05 a.m. by the Reverend Jonathan Adams, who opened the meeting with a prayer.

Appointment of Registrar Barbara Manning was appointed as Registrar of the meeting and her appointment was unanimously accepted.

Appointment of Deputy of Elections Melinda Gable was appointed Deputy of Elections, and her appointment was unanimously accepted.

Appointment of Ballot Tellers Gina Hammond and Elizabeth Thomas were appointed Ballot Tellers. These appointments were unanimously accepted.

Certification of a Quorum Senior Warden Melinda Gable determined that a Quorum was present. Forty-six is the threshold number for a quorum (10% of eligible voters), and attendance well exceeded that number. Standing room only.

Approval of the Minutes of the 2022 Annual Meeting Upon motion duly made, seconded, and unanimously adopted, the Minutes of the January 30, 2022, Annual Meeting were approved.

Report of the Nominating Committee The Vestry Nominating Committee has canvassed four candidates for the Class of 2025. After discussions, prayer, and discernment the committee is pleased to present four candidates with diverse talents standing for election for the four available positions of the Class of 2025: Jonathan Catherwood, Page Gravely, Kathleen Lange, Randy Mullett.

Committee Reports Committee and staff reports were included in the 2022 Annual Report. The Annual Report had been circulated to the parishioners by email. Printed copies were distributed at the meeting.

Wardens’ Report • Melinda Gable reported that Trinity is a happy place with a sense of community, new energy, and a gathering place for all ages. She said that Jonathan has developed a strong working relationship with the greater Episcopal Church, sharing a Welcome Video from Bishop Stevenson highlighting 2022 Trinity’s accomplishments.

The following activities demonstrate the harmony and vibrancy that is Trinity today: • A gathering place for our congregation and our community, offering multiple activities throughout the year.

• Four weekly worship services serving 275+ members and 14,000 visitors each year.

• Capital Campaign listening sessions with Trinity’s members.

• Sponsorship of AA and Co-Dependence Anonymous (CODA) meetings.

• Regular Bible Study groups.

• Play groups for mothers and their babies.

• The Trinity music program which attracts over 3,500 visitors a year for recitals and concerts.

• Parish Life sponsored Summer BBQs, the Shrove Tuesday meal, the Christmas Auction, Halloween for our young people and community, the Tree of Life Ministries, and many other special activities like the Ukraine Coat Drive.

Over 50 visitors a week visit the Trinity Thrift Shop which is open 3 days per week. 7,600+ people have visited the Shop since it reopened in May of 2022.

Over 40 people take walks on the campus each week and over 30,000 people visit the campus annually.

Treasurer’s Report • Chandler Van Voorhis highlighted the following details from the 2022 Annual Report: • Trinity ended fiscal year 2022 with net operating income on December 31, 2022, of $239,944.26 • Total income was $1,252,617.28; Total expenses were $1,012, 673.02 • The 2023 budget approved by the Vestry is balanced with an expected income of $ 1,055,429.28 • A separate Capital Repairs & Maintenance Budget has been created.

• The endowment is approximately $5.0 million representing 5 funds.

• Pledges are expected to bring in over $700k in 2023.

• Worship costs and Parish Life expenses have increased because we added an additional service, and our congregation is growing and becoming alive.

• Buildings & Grounds expenses increased due to higher energy costs. However, B&G is working on an energy management plan to mitigate future costs.

• The church accounting systems are being modernized using QuickBooks. A full-time Director of Stewardship and Finance has been added to the budget to handle the accounting and stewardship activities. It is expected that this hire will help to eliminate the burdensome and antiquated accounting methods currently in use.

• Chandler noted the most challenging aspect of being treasurer is ensuring Trinity is here in perpetuity. The tensions between the needs of today and tomorrow are real. We are working with a Capital Campaign consultant to solidify the future of Trinity.

Closing Comments – Jonathan Adams • Jonathan thanked the Vestry, the Treasurer, and the congregation for contributing to Trinity’s successful year. He thanked his staff, Richard Jones, Betsy Crenshaw for their good work and support.

• Jonathan thanked the outgoing Vestry Class of Melinda Gable and Elizabeth Thomas for their service and welcomed Jonathan Catherwood, Page Gravely, Kathleen Lange and Randy Mullett to the 2025 Vestry Class.

• The Capital Campaign discussion from past years was revived and the Vestry engaged the services of James D. Klote & Associates to investigate the possibilities of going forward with a Capital Campaign. Klote provided a full report to the Vestry on the entire Trinity operation. Klote determined that we have the capacity for a Capital Campaign and will be going forward. We are continuing our discussions but once everything is finalized the campaign will be launched. Jonathan’s goal is to meet with every Parish family and to complete the Capital Campaign within 3 to 6 months.

• We are in the process of hiring an Associate Priest, Ben Baker, to serve in our youth and outreach ministries.

He is currently finishing his final year at Duke Divinity. We look forward to welcoming him this summer.

• Jonathan thanked the congregation for putting their trust in him and for supporting him in making decisions to make Trinity the best place to be.

V ESTRY NOMINATIONS FOR THE CLASS OF 2026 Introduction The Vestry Nominating Committee has canvassed for candidates for the Class of 2026. After discussions, prayer and discernment they are pleased to present four candidates who have agreed to stand for election to the four available positions.

Vestry terms are three years and will begin in February 2024. Candidates must have met the eligibility qualifications as shown below.

We are very grateful to the Vestry Nominating Committee for their work and to all the candidates who have agreed to stand for election in service of their church. Biographical information is presented here for your information.

Who is Eligible to Serve on the Vestry?

According to the Episcopal Diocese of Virginia, Canon 11, Section 4: Only lay persons who are confirmed adult communicants in good standing of the church, as defined in General Convention Canon 1.17., shall be eligible for election as Vestry Members of such church.

However, regardless of eligibility of a person for election, no person shall be elected at a duly convened congregational meeting to consecutive full terms on a congregation’s Vestry or Vestry Committee.

So what does this mean in plain English?

“Confirmed Adult Communicant in good standing” means the following: •

You are age 16 or older.

•

You have been baptized and confirmed in the church, and we have your baptism and confirmation dates duly recorded.

•

You are active in worship, and have received communion at least 3 times this year.

•

You have been faithful in working, praying, and giving for the spread of the Kingdom of God (meaning you are active and intentional about your participation in the life of the church and are known to the treasurer of the church).

•

Furthermore, this Canon states that you can only serve one consecutive full term (3 years) on the Vestry.

V ESTRY NOMINATIONS FOR THE CLASS OF 2026 Katherine Lane Armfield I grew up in Middleburg and moved back with my husband (Chet Fannon) and children (Kingsley and Chester Fannon) 16 years ago. We have attended Trinity for 12 years. Both of the kids participated in the acolyte program and I have been involved with Trinity Village. We have enjoyed being a part of the Trinity community and I look forward to working with the vestry.

Teresa Ann Condon I’m sincerely honored to be asked to serve on Trinity’s vestry.

As a Trinity Upperville neighbor, I have been an active member and volunteer at Trinity for more than 20 years. My husband Britton and I were married here in 1999, and our children Blythe and Forbes were both baptized, confirmed and raised at Trinity, where they also participated in Sunday School and the Youth Group programs. During my time here, I’ve enjoyed teaching Sunday School, chairing the Christmas Auction and volunteering with multiple varied related activities. Having previously served on the vestry, I understand and appreciate the challenges and time that are expected as a vestry member.

I am a full-time mom and I currently own and operate a busy field sports apparel company. I’m also a long time member of the Upperville Garden Club. I regularly attend a Bible Study program and enjoy being a Trinity reader on Sundays. I deeply love our church and our community and I’m eager to further serve Trinity Church.

V ESTRY NOMINATIONS FOR THE CLASS OF 2026 Bradley J. Gable I am a lifelong Episcopalian, and I have been a member of Trinity Upperville since 2005. I previously served as Treasurer of our church. I have been a board member of the Diocesan Missionary Society for over 10 years. Our church and community are important to me and my family. Trinity is a wonderful place, with wonderful people. The building blocks are in place for many years of service to our parishioners, our community and one another.

I look forward to working with and for the family of Trinity.

Mary Guest Looney (Mary Elizabeth Guest) Thank you for asking me to serve as a vestry member at Trinity Church, it is truly an honor.

I grew up over the mountain attending Christ Church in Millwood, VA. My husband, Gregg, and I along with our children have been attending Trinity Church for about 20 years.

Owen, Andrew and Henry served as acolytes when younger. In the early days we attended the 10:30am service and participated in different family oriented functions at the church. We found between sports and kids we weren’t as involved but every so often. In the last couple of years, we have become more involved with the church and finding it to be our home. I enjoy attending the 5:00pm service, reading at the service, attending the sunrise service and volunteering with Gregg for the Trinity picnics. Having worked in Admissions at Foxcroft for 11 years, I am happy conducting mock interviews for eighth graders looking to attend an independent school. I work every so often at J McLaughlin in Middleburg, and enjoy playing tennis, pickle ball and walking with friends. I look forward to being involved and seeing where I can be of service.

Rector’s report Dear Trinity family, Wow! What a year we have had together! I cannot believe that just twelve months ago we pulled the trigger to do a capital campaign and went public with Renew and Restore on Easter Sunday, just nine short months ago. Together we did something that many felt was impossible… $10 million dollars seemed a target that was out of reach, but we blew through that number with a whopping pledge commitment of $11.25m. The response clearly demonstrated that people are willing and ready to take up this wonderful opportunity to care for the gift so generously bestowed by the Mellon’s. One of our Finance & Endowment Committee members stated, “I was prepared to be proud of $2-$3 million and felt $5 million was a stretch!” Just as amazing has been the number of pledges that have come in since announcing the campaign results on “KickOff Sunday” this past Fall. Two very special gifts came in after this announcement. One was from Thomas Lloyd (Mrs. Mellon’s grandson) who was blown away by the results and the commitment given to our stewarding of Trinity. He has asked to be a part of something that was in addition to the scope of the original campaign and which would allow this generation of Lloyds and Lamberts to add to this treasure in honor of their

grandmother. As a result, we will be developing a project along with the “Outdoor Sanctuary Committee” that will be both special and unique. We also received a call from the Kennedys who asked to do something special for the church to meet a long-standing need. They have given a special new endowment and details will be shared at our Annual Meeting. All of this has enabled us to undertake 35 capital projects during 2023, 32 of which have already been fully completed. You can find a full list on page 20 of this report.

The momentum from the Renew & Restore campaign, coupled with the theme of the year “Trinity, there is a place for you” has led to some amazing numerical and spiritual growth.

If you missed the Christmas Eve Pageant you missed out on something amazing! We had one of the largest cast of children ever! It was standing room only in church, and an atmosphere of joy and celebration! More the 850 people came through our campus through the Christmas holidays. It was both amazing and wonderful! Our Senior Warden leaned over to me as we were waiting to start a service and said, “look around, the demographics here are changing - Trinity is getting younger!” As I looked around the church I could see how right he was… we are busting at the seams with young families and children. Warden ’s Report Reflecting back on the momentous year that was 2023, we must first thank the outgoing Vestry class of 2023. These vestry members, Alix Coolidge, Daniel Leger, Laurie Volk and Ed Moore, are the last members of a class who were responsible for bringing Jonathan and his family to Trinity. All 12 Vestry members have done so much work behind the scenes and have given their time and talents to assist Jonathan in moving forward in recent years with bold and ambitious plans for our church.

Vestry has taken a keen interest in undertaking their fiduciary responsibilities to ensure that the many projects are completed properly, fully and at best value.

Of course, there was so much more to 2023 than the renewal of our buildings and grounds. We had the biggest year ever in our outreach efforts and the Vestry worked closely with the Outreach Committee to ensure that these donated funds were disbursed to those in need as effectively as possible. I feel privileged to work, pray, give and grow with you each week, year after year. We live in a busy world and what a joy it is to think that Trinity is at the center of that world for many of us. There are many volunteer opportunities here at the church. Let me know how you would like to be involved. Think of the rewards for the project and for yourself. Mu s i c M i n i st r i e s R e p o r t I have been privileged to serve as Director of Music Ministries and Organist at Trinity Church since January of 2021, and as organist since August of 2020. It is finally feeling like we’re back to normal with all of our programs running at full speed and the congregation growing rapidly.

BUILDINGS & Grounds Report This year’s annual report is somewhat different that those of the recent past. The reason is that Trinity has undergone some organizational changes, and we have, as I’m sure you know, had a very successful capital campaign.

As a result, the Buildings and Grounds “committee” has become an advisory group to assist the capital campaign works committee which will be reported on separately.

I’ll start by thanking the Garden Guild for their outstanding work enhancing the beauty of our grounds, particularly in the courtyard, but also in other less obvious or noticeable places. It has been a fabulous year… gratitude to our former Chair Sandra Marcus and our continuing Chair Harriett Condon. We look forward to what is next!

I am sure you all have noticed the many things that are going on regarding the campus infrastructure. These are projects that have been tabled for too many years due to funding constraints.

We are blessed to now have the resources to get these things done… thank you’s to all of you for that.

I do want to note one of the B+G advisory groups that worked for almost 12 months to help ensure the new HVAC system that we will have is the very best. Thank you to Joe Markus, Jonathan Gifford, Brett Bibb, and Ed Moore for the advice, oversight, and coordination through many, sometime twice weekly, online and in-person meetings that have brought us to where we are. Yes, we had hoped to be farther along by now, but in the end, we will have a system that will last for many years to come.

Finally, I want to thank Richard Jones and Kit Hall, both of whom could have been included in the paragraph above. Their sincere dedication to the daily oversight and care of all things B+G have been most remarkable. R e n e w & R e s t o r e — C a p i ta l Wo r k s The first works undertaken as part of Renew & Restore began during April 2023. Works to repair or renew aspects of our properties (14 individual buildings) and the wider campus will continue until late 2027.

We have been blessed by working with the very best professional advice and some exceptional and experienced craftspeople who have themselves quickly come to love Trinity as a very special place. The extent and level of detail received for each project proposal has to be seen to be believed! We have dealt with everything from samples to match original paint and mortar, UV protection levels for wood, and highly scientific testing of our water supply and design of a completely new treatment process. A HVAC working group met at least weekly for almost a year, working with a top engineer and our chosen contractor to design the very best new HVAC system for the church and Cox Hall properties. Some works have involved the restoration of features to their original design and look, and undoing previous unsympathetic repairs or works which simply are no longer considered appropriate, safe, or good practice. Of course works

are also subject to code and permit requirements where required.

35 new projects were undertaken during 2023, at a total cost of $1.2m.

32 of these projects were completed during the year. 3 are large scale projects and continue into 2024; namely HVAC (Church & Cox Hall), Electrical upgrade & new supply (to all of the campus), and installation of a new water supply, storage and treatment (again, supplying the whole campus). Highlights amongst other completed works include the restoration of stained glass windows within the church, the relighting of Trinity Thrift & Boutique, and an extensive internal and external restoration of “The Cottage”. All works have been planned to minimize (as far as is possible) disruption to the life and work of Trinity Church. themes of discussion was the gift of peace that “surpasses all understanding” (Philippians 4:6-7).

While it is easy to feel that peace on the water, we explored how to bring it back with us into our homes and schools.

Flower Guild Report The Trinity Church Flower Guild, chaired by Gina Hammond and Sandra Markus, consists of seven talented teams. On a scheduled rotation, each team prepares the flowers for the Sunday services.

For a typical Sundays, flowers were placed on the reredos, in the entryway and in the chapel.

Flowers were also provided for nine weddings and nine funerals using favorite flowers and colors, as specified by the families. To celebrate the first visit of our new Bishop, The Rt Rev E. Mark Stevenson, the teams also provided arrangements for each dinner table.

Special attention was given to flowers for the feasts of Easter, Advent and Christmas. Memorial gifts are asked of the congregation for Easter and Christmas to be given in thanksgiving for and in memory of family members and loved ones. For Easter, an arrangement was made for the sunrise service at the Outdoor Chapel. A variety of spring flowers were used in arrangements in the church. For the month of November, a former tradition at Trinity was brought back with harvest arrangements placed on the reredos, in the entryway and on the table in the back of the church. During Advent, only greens were used in the church to include two Christmas trees placed on the reredos. A beautiful Advent Wreath was commissioned for the church, and three festive wreaths hung

outside of Cox Hall. At Christmas, the church was decorated with evergreens, poinsettia and mixed flowers in Christmas colors.

The Flower Guild thanks all individuals who make contributions for flowers used throughout the year. Openings are available on the calendar if you wish to remember someone or an event (birthdays, anniversaries) during the year.

Persons interested in serving on the Flower Guild should contact the chairpersons. Flowers are a welcoming way to greet visitors to Trinity. The Guild is honored to be able to work with so many gifts from God’s creation.

TREASURER’S REPORT Truly — 2023 — was a transformational year for Trinity!

Transformation happens because belief takes shape in the hearts of many resulting in the coordination of all working together for the greater good.

Therefore, it is important to take a pause and reflect on where we started last year.

Setting The Financial Table We started 2023 with a long-time bookkeeper leaving and a backend financial system needing upgrade and modernization. At the same time, the Vestry made three bold decisions in January.

Adopting a budget that would restructure our finances.

A commitment to accelerate our deferred maintenance before a campaign begins.

A decision to move forward with a Capital Campaign

We first hired NJP Accounting to be our bookkeeper. NJP’s expertise in financial flow and integration has been invaluable as we upgraded to QuickBooks Online and the integration of our PushPay system, Point of Sale (POS) systems as well as banking accounts.

Inside the budget, several decisions were made. One to highlight was the addition of the Director of Finances and Stewardship position. With the hire of Sophia, the working relationship of how three positions integrate —Bookkeeper, Director of Finance and Stewardship, and Treasurer —

has taken shape. Equally, from the Rector's standpoint, having now both a Director of Operations and Communications as well as a Director of Finance and Stewardship has created operational balance and fluency.

The Endowment As a church, we are expected to be around in perpetuity. This expectation is a great weight of responsibility, especially given the campus and buildings we have been blessed and endowed with from those before us. Balancing the needs of today while securing our future is one of the core responsibilities that a Vestry, Rector, and Treasurer must keep a keen eye on.

Until recent years, the Vestry has routinely taken a 4.5% draw on the endowment. For far too long, the Endowment was covering the shortcomings of pledge income.

Over the course of the last few years, we steadily got that number down to 4.3%. This required us to step up our stewardship giving.

Through the hard work of many, including Alix Coolidge and, of course, Jonathan, we challenged ourselves to reach deeper into our pockets. The result of our giving 24

today was for the first time, maybe ever, that we did not take an endowment draw in the first quarter of 2022. While we did take regular draws in the remaining quarters, the first quarter was a useful pause to enable our new money managers to have the luxury of time to get our funds moving in the right direction.

Thanks to Daniel Leger and the Endowment Committee, Trinity has navigated this change well and securely.

A Steppingstone for the Future The momentum for Trinity has been building up all year long.

Throughout the year, Team Trinity continued to double down across every aspect of the church. The numbers tell an exciting story and speak volumes to the trajectory of Trinity.

1. We have not taken a draw all year and saw our Endowment rebound by $834,000 this year so far. This is a first for Trinity!

2. We have accelerated and completed 35 capital projects to the tune of $1.2m (thanks to Richard Jones, Ed Moore, Brett Bibb, and the Buildings and Grounds Committee).

3. We exceeded our $10m Capital Campaign Goal (thanks to Rector

Endowment Committee Report The broader equity markets rallied in 2023 with the S&P 500 up over 26% for the year. Corporate earnings were much stronger than many analysts and economists expected at the beginning of the year, while inflation declined rapidly. In the fourth quarter, the market rallied as the Federal Reserve indicated that given the more benign inflation readings, they expect to reduce short-term rates in 2024. As a result, Trinity's diversified portfolio of equities, fixed income, alternatives and cash performed well. For the year, the endowment gained 16.58% or over

$800,000 in realized and unrealized gains, finishing the year at over $5.6 million. The majority of the portfolio was allocated to equities at 80%, 11.7% in fixed income, and 4.1% in both alternatives and cash respectively. Atlantic Union continues to perform in line with our expectations and remains responsive to our questions and needs.

S t e wa r d s h i p C o m m i t t e e R e p o r t The response to the 2023 Stewardship Campaign “Trinity there is a place for you” was excellent. There were 155 Pledges for a total pledged of $673,123. Of the 155 pledges there were 38 new pledging units. The attrition level was far below the anticipated 10%.

Thank you to everyone for their generous and unwavering commitment to Trinity which resulted in such a success for the 2023 Pledge Campaign.

The successful full implementation of PushPay was completed in 2023 and I am happy to report that more and more parishioners are utilizing the online app through their cell phones. We continue to encourage parishioners to use this giving platform for their own ease and

convenience and to set up monthly gifts for a smoother financial base for the operating of Trinity.

The 2024 Pledge Campaign “All-In” was kicked off in November and is off to a strong start. To date we have received 129 pledges with a value of $598,039.77. Pledges continue to arrive daily. We are planning several further stewardship events in the coming months.

We give thanks to former Stewardship Chair Alex Coolidge for her great work and welcome Melanie Blunt & Ashley Kennedy as 2024 Co-Chairs.

Finance Committee Report The Finance Committee is charged with providing assistance and advice to the Treasurer, Vestry, and the Director of Finance & Stewardship of Trinity Episcopal Church on parish financial matters, including areas of both opportunity and concern. This includes developing and making recommendations for the budget, financial operations and internal control reviews, and consideration of any suggestions received from auditors as well as members of the Finance Committee. The Committee also makes recommendations concerning fundraising, the Capital Campaign, financial service providers, office finance systems, insurance coverage, and financial risk

management analysis.

In 2023 in addition to the normal charge of the Finance Committee to analyze both the actual and budgeted financial statements, we reviewed and made recommendations regarding the following matters: 1. Applying for and being approved for the government employee retention credit program. 2. Monitoring the endowment and making recommendations for the amount to be withdrawn while monitoring the cashflow necessary for church operations. 3. Reviewed and recommended various methods of pledge and plate collection as well as ways to smooth out the cyclical nature of pledge collection.

With students of varying abilities and ages, interactive lessons that include creativity, physical movement, and sensory awareness are essential.

We start with a welcome activity that introduces the day’s lesson.

Room decorations help students imagine the Bible coming to life.

The Bible story is then shared through reading, acting, and watching videos.

Parishioners (both young and old) worked together to set-up and run VBS so that children could be immersed in the world of the Bible.

The theme of this year’s VBS was “Hero Hotline.” Children became little “heroes” themselves as they learned about biblical heroes who brought peace, encouraged others, and shared the great story of God’s love for us and the world. Each day, the kids (heroes) experienced Bible’s stories through music, drama, storytelling, games, art and Highlights from our Bible lessons in crafts, and even snacks! They 2023 include… learned that heroes are called to · Jesus’ preaching ministry (Minute- follow Jesus, help others, work Susan Robeson to-Win-It and Jeopardy games) together, listen to God, and show Convener, Trinity Kids & · Jesus’ healing of Jairus’ daughter Grace. Tr e e o f L i f e R e p o r t The Tree of Life team had a very successful year preparing meals at our Trinity kitchen in Cox Hall and transporting the meals and serving in the Tree of Life location in Purcellville. There was a joyful service by over 10 members who met on Thursdays every other month to prepare the food. In addition, many others provided cornbread and cookies, dropping them by the church on Wednesdays and Thursdays. Early

in the year the need for 30-40 meals was met, but as the year progressed that need increased to 60-80 meals for those in need.

Each time this need was met with enthusiasm and an outpouring of support. In addition the team started leaving meals for our ESL program as another way to support those families in need. The Tree of Life Ministry Team has signed up for six more meals in 2024. The group is a joy to work 28

with and the support continues to abound at Trinity. Thanks be to God for another wonderful year of service through Tree of Life!

Outreach Committee Report St. James hits the nail on the head when he tells us that true religious devotion is marked by the “care for orphans and widows in their difficulties” (James 1:27).

Trinity’s Outreach Committee is one of the ways that our church lives into this call to care for those on the margins. In coordination with the Vestry, the Outreach Committee provides financial support for ministries and organizations that meet people in their need and contribute to a vision of God’s kingdom on earth. Through the Outreach Committee, Trinity is able to partner with ministries and organizations from right in our backyard to all the way around the world.

Highlights from 2023 include… · The distribution of over $75,000 to our partner ministries and organizations. · Increased grant assistance to local individuals administered through our partners at Tree of Life Ministries. As well as individual grant assistance, they provide food, life skills, shelter, healthcare, and relief through the love of Christ for those in need in our communities. · Continued support to Piedmont Child Care Center (Upperville, VA) in their mission to provide quality early childhood care and education for children 6 weeks – 12 years of age. · Contribution to Seven Loaves Food Pantry (Middleburg, VA) for the protein portion of their

Thanksgiving baskets. · Continued monthly payments for a new wheelchair-accessible van for the Shelton Family (Fauquier County). · Support for Mountaineer Recovery Center (Kearneysville, WV), and an Advent Clothing Drive to help provide basic clothing for recovery patients coming directly from prison. · Scholarship funds for a student at George Mason University. · Continued contributions to Holistic Haitian Alliance in support of a dental clinic and medical school tuition for two students. · Assistance for a missionary serving in Bulgaria with Global Outreach International. · Support for the Episcopal Diocese of Jerusalem and their ministry efforts in Israel and Palestine. · Response to acute needs including rent payment for a family, urgent dental work for a child, heating oil for an elderly couple, and support of two women going through cancer treatment. · Our annual Christmas Party and Paddle Raise Event that will support our Outreach efforts in 2024!

In addition to our financial support, Trinity also supports our ministry partners in prayer.

We recently added a weekly prayer rota for our partners during our Sunday liturgy. Please pray with us for them, and pray for our Outreach Committee!

Trin ity Thrif t & B o u tiqu e 2023 was a banner year for Trinity’s thrift shop. Under its new name and branding of Trinity Thrift & Boutique our amazing shop generated almost $90,000 of income in 2023!

It has also been a year when we took the opportunity to make a few sorely needed improvements to this imposing historic house, including new lighting throughout.

We were able to accomplish this major undertaking with minor disruption to the hours of operation.

We had an upfront location in Cox Hall for our table at the Church’s Ministry Fair in September, which represented the start of Trinity’s program year. It was a grand opportunity to sign up new volunteers and chat with attendees who were interested in learning more about the Church and the role of the shop in its overall outreach program. Also this year, Afghan Couture was offered a space in the vestibule area on the first floor to sell and display a colorful array of handcrafted items ranging from scarfs and purses to intricate caftans and jackets. Proceeds will benefit both the Trinity Outreach Program and craftswomen in Afghanistan.

One of the many reasons our year was so successful was due to the extraordinary donations that come our way. Our parishioners have been extremely generous in providing us with merchandise that attracts customers from a very broad geographical area, from right across Virginia, and as far away as Maryland and West Virginia. A lot of our time and energy goes into sorting and pricing, but it is well worth the effort!

Kudos to our many volunteers who have stepped up to the plate and devoted their time and energy to enable such a vast turnover of merchandise weekly.

Unfortunately, after preparations were in place, due to illness, we were unable to host our Annual Christmas Party this year.

However, December and the run up to Christmas was one of the shop’s best performing times, with record sales and income.

Again, we thank the Church leadership and staff, and our loyal volunteers who worked so hard to ensure our year would be a great one. Without their support it would have been difficult to realize our goals. Our success is a result of teamwork, and everyone is truly valued. Thank you for your support.

A d u lt F o r m at i o n R e p o r t Through 2023 we continued our practice of holding Adult Formation in themed series of generally 4-6 weeks each. This has allowed presenters to take a deep dive into their subjects and offer participants to develop their learning and study each week. It seems that people also appreciate a series with a fixed length, rather than an openended commitment.

In 2023 our sessions took place away from the traditional Sunday Adult Formation hour.

For some time we have been considering how to engage more people with opportunities for faith and spiritual formation, so we took a decision to try different times and different locations - and it worked!: • During the fall we held a great six week series following The Marriage Course, developed by Alpha, at Holy Trinity, Brompton, London, U.K. We were fully subscribed and it was a real treat to be hosted by Sam & Boo Busey at Lost Barrel Brewing, Middleburg, which proved to be a great venue.

• Later in 2023, in preparation for the Thanksgiving and Christmas holidays, we offered a four week Grief Recovery Course, on Wednesday afternoons at Peard House. Facilitated by Verna Stern, counsellor, and The Rev. Jonathan, this course appeared to meet a real need and was much valued by all those who took

part. Again, the course was fully subscribed, Also new in 2023 was Tea & Conversation hosted by Jerry Eisley at Gulick House on Sunday afternoons on a bi-monthly basis. Each time a different topic around faith, imagination, and the creative arts was offered for thought and discussion, in the context of delicious food and lots of tea drinking!

Our weekly Bible Study led by Joe Fluet, met throughout the year, and it was really encouraging to see this group grow in numbers when the new Fall series began.

Wine & Word, also continued to meet, generously hosted at the home of Dan & Amy Smith, and a good number of people from Trinity regularly enjoyed these times of discussion and learning through several themed series.

A number of the Trinity men also continued to regularly enjoy the “2nd Tuesday” gatherings hosted by Scott Andrews, with bible study and breakfast, and a range of visiting speakers. This is an open group, held each month at Meadowkirk, Delta Farm, Middleburg. Do join them!.

Trinity Men’s Breakfast continues to meet on the third Saturday of the month, 8:00am, Cox Hall, and offers lively discussion on topics chosen by attendees, as well as food, fun, and fellowship. Contact Gray Coyner 540.454.1468 for more details or just come along and join them.

Outdoor Sanctuary Report Worship and Fellowship On Good Friday, April 7, Julie Simonton led a walk visiting the Stations of the Cross set up along the mown trails leading toward the cross. We continued our observation of Good Friday in Cox Hall with hot cross buns baked lovingly by Mary McCaskey.

The Easter Sunrise service (this year, on April 9) has become a favorite with members and friends of Trinity, and is now a well-established tradition. Thanks to Brett and Sabine Bibb for overseeing the set-up and clean up for the service, including many beautiful votive candles and flowers provided by Gina Hammond. Thanks, also, to the many worshippers who arrived early to share coffee, juice, and croissants waiting for the sun to rise behind the cross.

The first of several summer congregational picnics was held at the Outdoor Sanctuary on June 4.

Many thanks to those who provided salads, sides and desserts, and to Jonathan and Bess for leading us in a worship service of Evening Prayer.

Planting During the Spring of 2023, we continued planting Virginia bluebells and other spring ephemerals along the Pantherskin

Creek path.

In Fall, we began seeding wildflower meadows in three designated areas of pasture. Each area received a slightly different seed mix. These areas will provide beauty, habitat and forage for all creatures great and small. In all, over 30 species of Virginia native wildflower seeds were planted that are expected to bloom throughout the season, and remain uncut through the winter months. (It takes three to five years to establish a meadow, so a little prayer and patience is required). Thanks to those who helped with preparations and planting, especially Richard Jones, Kit Hall, Ken and Stephanie Knapp, Holly Bimba, Carol Miller, Rebecca Schaefer, Michelle Lodge, Faith Eskew, Maureen Jones, Cathy Boswell, Anne Rowland, Lila Putnam, Colleen Hahn, Bill and Sharon Clinton, and Susan Vogel.
