We are delighted to welcome you to another memorable Memorial Day weekend in Hunt Country. For more than six decades, this tour has offered a rare and authentic glimpse into the beauty, heritage, and rhythm of life in our region—a tradition that began in 1959 when Trinity Episcopal Church first invited guests to explore local properties with a “horse connection.”

Today, the Stable Tour remains a beloved event for our community and for visitors who return year after year—many traveling from across the country to experience this unique celebration of Virginia’s countryside.

Building on the continued success of recent years, we are pleased to once again offer exclusive VIP Experiences designed to elevate your visit. These curated gatherings provide the opportunity to relax in scenic settings, enjoy local wines, and take in the extraordinary views that define Hunt Country.

We also continue to enhance the visitor experience through thoughtful use of technology, including online ticketing and a driving app to guide you throughout the tour. These tools allow us to streamline operations, reduce costs, and ensure that more proceeds directly support the ministry and outreach of Trinity Church.

This event would not be possible without the generosity of the farm and stable owners, their staff, and managers, who graciously open their gates to share the beauty of their land and the traditions they steward. We are equally grateful to our dedicated volunteers and planning team, whose efforts make this weekend both seamless and special.

TRINITY TRINITY EPISCOPAL EPISCOPAL CHURCH CHURCH 9108 John Mosby Highway | Upperville, VA 20184

Trinity Episcopal Church is a famous local landmark, located beside Route 50 at the heart of Upperville village. The native Virginia sandstone complex of the church, former rectory (now church offices) and parish hall was given to Meade Parish by Mr. Paul Mellon and Mrs. Rachel “Bunny” Mellon in 1960 and were designed by noted architect Howard Page Cross. Mrs. Mellon was heavily involved with both the broad inspiration for the design, and with decisions about architectural features and details, too. Her inspiration seems to have been heavily drawn from 12th & 13th Century French and Scandinavian churches.

A warm welcome awaits you at worship which takes place at 9:00am & 5:00pm (summer months) and at 8:00am, 10:30am, & 5:00pm throughout the rest of the year.

We do hope that you will join us for worship during your visit here.

The church is open each day for visitors and for quiet prayer and contemplation.

Throughout the Hunt Country Stable Tour church guides will be on hand to show you around and answer any questions that you may have. The Director of Music & Organist will play the renowned Aeolian-Skinner pipe organ at various times during these days.

Visitors are also encouraged to visit other parts of the extensive Trinity Church campus (almost 40 acres in total): Trinity Thrift & Boutique, housed in the historic Keith House, offers many rooms and a treasure-trove of thrift & boutique, and is located at the eastern side of the campus, next to Upperville Post Office. (see our advertisement in this brochure) The Hunt Country Stable Tour “Country Fair” is located on the front lawn of the church. Also visit the Piedmont Art Exhibition and sale in Cox Hall.

Please take time to tour our historic church with experienced docents, offering a deeper look into its rich history and enduring presence in the community.

UPPERVILLE UPPERVILLE & & MIDDLEBURG MIDDLEBURG Upperville has been described as “a mile long and an inch wide.” The 18th century linear village began life in 1790 as Carr Town, named for the mill owner Joseph Carr, but by the time the first post office opened in 1807, the name was Upperville.

Today’s quiet village shows few traces of the once bustling commercy along Route 50 that served its 300 residents.

Although the population has barely changed, Upperville is now the center of America’s famed “Hunt Country” and surrounded by internationally recognized Thoroughbred farms.

It lies within the Piedmont Hunt.

Just east of town are the famous show grounds of the Upperville Colt and Horse Show, the oldest horse show in the United States. Established in 1853 by Colonel Richard Henry Dulany, this seven-day event draws the best equestrians in the country to its hunter and jumper competitions and is capped by the exciting $220,000 Upperville Jumper Classic.

Upperville has been designated an Historic Landmark by the Virginia Landmark Commission.

Middleburg, known by Colonial Virginians in 1731 as Chinn’s Crossing, was originally owned by a cousin of George Washington. In 1787, the Virginia Assembly established the town, which had become a mid-way overnight stop on the pike between Alexandria and Winchester. Fittingly, its name was changed to Middleburg.

The village is rich in history, from tales of Mosby’s Rangers and skirmishes during the Civil War, to the glamorous years when the Kennedys were regulars, to its current international reputation as a breeding, showing, and racing center for Thoroughbreds.

Country life and traditions are prized by local residents.

In 1905, the Middleburg-Upperville areas created a renaissance in fox hunting with the International Hound Trials. The riders and their hounds, with all their pomp and pageantry, lead off the annual Christmas parade in Middleburg.

The hunt and the hounds, carriage drives, polo, charity balls, farms, vineyards, and walks along peaceful back roads make up the fabric of Middleburg life, along with delightful boutiques, art galleries, fine restaurants, and historic inns.

ATOKA ATOKA FARM FARM 16414 Lake Farm Road | Marshall 20115

Atoka Farm is one of Middleburg’s most storied and picturesque estates, with a rich history that reflects the evolution of Hunt Country itself. Originally known as Hope Farm, the property was later owned by the Lake family, who renamed it Lake Farm. The name Atoka Farm was established in the 1930s and has remained ever since.

The original residence was lost to fire, and the present Manor House was constructed in 1939. Over the years, the farm has continued to evolve, with thoughtful additions including barns and supporting structures. The overall character and design of the property were notably influenced by Mrs. ‘Bunny’ Mellon, whose vision helped shape much of the region’s timeless aesthetic.

Atoka Farm has long been associated with prominent figures in both equestrian and cultural circles. John Warner, former U.S. Senator, once called Atoka home during his marriage to Elizabeth Taylor. A dedicated fox hunter, Warner enjoyed extensive riding access throughout the surrounding countryside. He also shared a close friendship with Ronald Reagan, and the two were known to ride together across the property.

In May 2016, Atoka Farm was purchased by Michael Smith, who has since undertaken significant improvements and careful restoration. Today, the farm encompasses approximately 300 acres. The Manor House has been returned to its former elegance, complemented by updated amenities including the impressive Poplar Garage, which has been featured on recent tours.

Atoka Farm remains a quintessential example of the beauty, heritage, and enduring spirit of Virginia’s Hunt Country.

FOXLEIGH FOXLEIGH FARM FARM 1769 Zulla Road | Middleburg 20117 Foxleigh Farm is a beautiful and historically significant property rooted in the earliest days of Virginia’s Hunt Country. The land was originally part of a grant from King George II to Leven Powell, one of the region’s earliest settlers, whose legacy remains deeply woven into the fabric of Middleburg.

In the 1920s, the farm evolved into a working dairy operation, complete with a grain silo and barn designed to support livestock. The original barn was rebuilt in 1978, preserving its historic stone foundations, and now features a central aisle and horse stalls. Additional structures, including a carriage barn near the main residence, reflect the farm’s continued growth and thoughtful adaptation over time.

Today, Foxleigh Farm blends its agricultural heritage with a refined, multi-use purpose. The former carriage barn has been transformed into The Paradise, an Antique Shop and Interior Design Center curated by Ariane Carles, co-owner of the farm. This unique space brings together equestrian charm and elevated design in a truly distinctive setting.

Foxleigh has long been home to exceptional equestrian life. Thoroughbreds, show jumpers, polo ponies, and carriage horses have been bred, trained, and cared for on the property. The farm is now under permanent conservation with the Virginia Outdoors Foundation (VOF) and holds established hunting rights with the Orange County Hounds (OCH), ensuring the preservation of its open land and traditions for generations to come.

Today, visitors will find show jumpers, foxhunters, and carriage horses grazing across lush pastures and paddocks, many of which will be on display throughout the tour.

Carriages will also be exhibited, along with demonstrations that celebrate the craftsmanship and heritage of the sport.

Guests are invited to explore The Paradise Antique and Interior Design Center, open during the tour and housed within the beautifully restored carriage barn.

Set atop one of the highest points in Virginia’s Hunt Country, Stoke Farm commands sweeping panoramic views of rolling hills, verdant valleys, and distant mountain ranges—an extraordinary setting that captures the essence of the region.

For the Hunt Country Stable Tour, visitors are invited to step back in time with a rare opportunity to experience a meticulously restored two-level bank barn, thoughtfully preserved to honor its original craftsmanship and purpose.

Stoke offers a rare sense of place—where history, landscape, and tradition come together in perfect harmony.

Set amidst the rolling hills of Virginia’s Hunt Country, Bellwether Farm is a picturesque working sheep farm that celebrates the beauty and importance of heritage livestock within the agricultural landscape.

At the heart of the farm are its carefully tended flocks of Kerry Sheep from Wales, U.K., known for their hardiness, character, and rich historical significance. Grazing across open pastures, these sheep play an essential role in maintaining the land while offering a charming and authentic glimpse into traditional farm life.

For the Hunt Country Stable Tour, visitors are invited to experience this unique setting firsthand. Guests will have the opportunity to meet and gently interact with the sheep, observe them in pasture, and learn more about their role in sustainable land stewardship.

Adding to its story, Bellwether Farm recently met a very special visitor. On April 30, during a visit to Front Royal, Virginia, Queen Camilla of the United Kingdom met and stroked a newborn lamb—“Upperville Charles,” named in her honor and born just the day before. The Queen described the lamb as “very sweet.” During your visit, you’ll have the opportunity to meet Upperville Charles—and all his friends.

Thoughtfully maintained and intentionally understated in design, Bellwether embraces a natural, pastoral aesthetic—where wide-open fields, gentle terrain, and sweeping views create a sense of calm and connection to the countryside. A serene and memorable stop, it offers a true reflection of Hunt Country at its most authentic.

The National Sporting Library & Museum (NSLM) in Middleburg, Virginia, is a premier institution dedicated to preserving and celebrating the literature, art, and culture of equestrian, angling, and field sports. The 6-acre campus features a world-class research library and an art museum that together offer a rich exploration of country pursuits.

Current exhibitions include Big Race: The Contemporary Vision of Clarice Smith, which showcases the artist’s vibrant and dynamic interpretations of the sport of racing. A changing display of paintings, sculpture, works on paper, and objects from the NSLM's Permanent Collection is presented in the Museum, which opened in 2011. The collection is installed in the historic wing of the Museum, which was originally a Federal house built in 1804 called "Vine Hill." The Forrest E. Mars, Sr. Exhibit Hall features Rose Marie Bogley: Elegance Aside, an exhibition highlighting the recent Library acquisition of the Rose Marie Bogley Archives.

Donated by her daughter Hilleary Bogley, and The Rose Marie Bogley Revocable Trust, it is a rich collection of photos and awards amassed over six decades by the equestrienne. offering a modern take on this historic tradition.

Together, these exhibitions provide a comprehensive insight into the diverse and enduring legacy of country sports.

Nestled on 500 acres of pristine land in Middleburg, Virginia, Kinross Farm has stood as a premier equine training facility since 1992. Under the ownership of Zohar and the late Lisa Ben-Dov, whose vision and dedication helped shape Kinross into a world-class center for steeplechase and fox hunting, the farm has evolved into a leading destination recognized for its excellence in breeding, training, and developing top-tier horses.

In April 2024, Kinross celebrated one of its most thrilling victories when Irish-bred Blackhall surged to the finish to win the $100,000 Maryland Hunt Cup, one of the sport’s most prestigious timber races. Ridden by Charlie Marshall, Blackhall’s dramatic win added a remarkable chapter to Kinross’s legacy in steeplechase racing.

The farm’s reputation for meticulous care and attention to detail has been key to its continued success. Kinross has produced numerous champions, including earning a leading owner title in 2004. Its horses are known for outstanding performances on the racecourse and in the hunt field, built on a foundation of discipline, patience, and a deep understanding of each horse’s needs.

Kinross features top-tier facilities, including a 25-stall center-aisle training barn, multiple log schooling areas, and expansive grass gallops. The farm accommodates horses at all stages of training, from young prospects to seasoned racehorses and eventing competitors. Indoor and outdoor arenas ensure consistent work in all conditions.

At the heart of Kinross is trainer Lindsay Kelley, a skilled professional who competes at the Advanced/5 level in eventing and specializes in training fox hunters and jumpers. Her cross-disciplinary approach enhances each horse’s versatility and overall performance.

The success of Kinross Farm is the result of a dedicated collaboration between the Ben-Dovs, their expert team, and the exceptional horses they train. Every horse receives individualized care and attention, ensuring the opportunity to reach its full potential—on the track, in the field, or in the show ring.

LITTLE LITTLE RIVER RIVER FARM FARM 5375 Crain Lane| The Plains 20198

Little River Farm, circa 1840, boasts a rich history that continues to thrive under the stewardship of Shannon and Jim Davis. In 2017, they acquired the property from the children of Pamela Braga (formerly Brown/Ohrstrom).

Pamela, along with her former husband Jay Carter Brown, dedicated two decades to meticulously restoring the main house, carriage house, dependency, caretaker’s cottage, and various outbuildings, ensuring the preservation of their historical significance.

The Davis family teamed up with architect Thomas Beach to restore their 1918 barn, expanding it to hold 15 stalls across three structures. The result is a charming, Cotswold-esque stable yard with restored tack, feed, and wash stall rooms adorned with photographs of Orange County Hunt hounds and antique memorabilia. The riding ring was also expanded and updated with new fencing, footing, a watering system, and a judge’s stand for schooling shows.

by Devon Zebrovious, a nationally recognized rider and three-time USEF National Champion who combines elegance and athleticism in the hunt field while championing the tradition of side saddle riding.

THE THE EQUESTRIAN EQUESTRIAN CENTER CENTER AT AT SALAMANDER SALAMANDER 550 North Pendleton Street | Middleburg 20117

The Equestrian Center at Salamander Middleburg is a state-of-the-art facility featuring 22 stalls, nine paddocks, and an outdoor riding arena with premium ThorTurf footing. Set on 25 acres dedicated to equestrian pursuits, the 14,000-square-foot stable is one of the most distinctive features of the resort.

The program offers guided trail rides for riders of all skill levels across the resort’s scenic 340-acre property, with miles of wooded trails and open countryside. Offerings range from relaxed group rides to more tailored riding experiences for experienced equestrians.

The center is also home to a collection of horses and ponies, including “Cupcake,” the beloved miniature horse. Youth-focused programs introduce horsemanship through hands-on experiences such as grooming and pony rides.

Salamander Middleburg is committed to community engagement and supports local therapeutic riding programs. These programs provide adapted riding instruction aligned with participants’ individual goals, promoting physical and emotional well-being.

THE THE MARE MARE CENTER CENTER 5527 Sullivans Mill Road | Middleburg 20117

The MARE Center (Middleburg Agricultural Research and Extension Center) plays a vital role in advancing the research, outreach, and educational missions of Virginia Tech’s College of Agriculture and Life Sciences.

Situated on a 420-acre farm in the heart of Virginia’s horse country, the center was established in 1949 through a gift from philanthropist Paul Mellon and has evolved into one of the nation’s leading equine research facilities.

Through global collaborations with academic institutions and industry partners, the center is dedicated to improving the health and well-being of horses. Its interdisciplinary research spans equine nutrition and exercise physiology, health and disease, animal behavior, and pasture management —helping shape best practices in horse care and performance.

The MARE Center serves as a living laboratory, integrating innovative technologies such as smart applications and biosensor tools that support real-time nutrition and exercise decisions. It also provides opportunities to observe mares and foals, offering a deeper understanding of equine reproduction, growth, and development.

Situated on 149 acres in Loudoun County, Virginia, the Middleburg Training Center has been a cornerstone of Thoroughbred training since its establishment in 1956 by philanthropist Paul Mellon. The facility features 11 barns with 220 stalls, 22 paddocks, and a 7/8-mile racetrack equipped with a state-of-the-art Duralock race rail.

Notably, the legendary Spectacular Bid, winner of the 1979 Kentucky Derby and Preakness Stakes, began his illustrious career here under trainer Barbara Graham. In 2017, local entrepreneur Chuck Kuhn purchased the property with a vision to restore the Training Center to its former grandeur. Kuhn, founder of JK Moving Services, initiated a comprehensive renovation plan to upgrade the barns, racetrack, and other facilities.

Future plans include expanding into other equestrian sports such as dressage, show-jumping, and crosscountry events. These enhancements have rejuvenated the center, attracting numerous trainers and equestrians. The facility now accommodates around 130 horses, primarily focusing on Thoroughbred racing and steeplechase disciplines.

Today, the Middleburg Training Center stands as a testament to the enduring legacy and ongoing revitalization of Virginia’s rich horse racing and training traditions, providing world-class facilities for both horses and riders.

Step into the exciting world of polo with a thrilling match at Phipps Field, where you can learn about the rules and strategies that make this sport so captivating. Visitors, including children and tour participants, will have the unique opportunity to meet the polo ponies and players, take photos, and get an up-close look at the action.

Watching polo for the first time is an exhilarating experience, with the match beginning as the sound of thundering hooves fills the air. Skilled riders in traditional polo attire gracefully guide their powerful horses, showcasing precision and athleticism.

Phipps Field, originally built around 1925 by the Phipps family of New York, has a rich history. Over the past 99 years, it has hosted local players as well as some of the world’s most renowned polo players. The field has had several prestigious owners, including Paul Mellon, Senator John Warner, and Jack Kent Cooke, former owner of the Washington Redskins. Today, it is owned by Destination Polo, continuing its legacy of world-class polo.

Home to international show jumper Conor O’Regan, the barn rises from a once undeveloped Upperville property, transformed through vision, passion, and meticulous planning.

The result is a breathtaking 28-stall barn stretching over 180 feet, with soaring ceilings, warm wood interiors, and abundant natural light. Thoughtfully designed for both horse and rider, the space balances beauty and practicality—from spacious grooming areas to seamless sightlines throughout the barn, ring, and paddocks. A striking central cupola and chandelier anchor the space, creating a dramatic yet welcoming atmosphere.

In the 1950’s, we hosted a gymkhana-type country fair at the H o r s e S h o w g r o u n d s : T h e Ve s t r y S r. Wa r d e n , J i m P l a s k i t t t a s k e d Re e d T h o m a s o f O v o k a a n d G e o r g e S l a t e r o f We s t V i e w a s c o - c h a i r m e n . T h u s began the care of a vibrant group of parishioners offering their knowledge and experience, not forgetting their connections, to bring the HCST to life.

T h e r e w e r e s o m e g r o w i n g p a i n s a l o n g t h e w a y, c r u c i a l t o t h e s u c c e s s o f t h i s f u n d r a i s e r a s w e k n o w i t t o d a y.

I n 1 9 5 9 t h e q u a r t e r l y Ve s t r y m e e t i n g m i n u t e s r e p o r t e d t h a t a “ h o u s e t o u r ” w o u l d b e h e l d o n S a t u r d a y, N o v e m b e r 7 t h , n o t i n g t h a t e a c h p l a c e was well known for its “horse” connections as well as the gracious g a r d e n s a n d i n t e r i o r s o f t h e s e h o u s e s . Ro b e r t C o x a n n o u n c e d t h a t a n “ i n f o r m a l ” m o v e c o u l d b e m a d e a r o u n d t h e 10th of June 1960 when the Aeolian Skinner Co. would install a new organ r e p l a c i n g t h e o l d Wu r l i t z e r. T h e n e w c h u r c h w a s d e d i c a t e d i n 1 9 6 1 .

To u r visitors could view museum-worthy equine art work, as well as the real horses in our nearby fields! This addition proved so successful that succeeding years offered an evening auction of prominent local collectors.

In 1965, net proceeds were $1,350, and in 1966 were $11,500!

C l o s e f r i e n d s , Re e d T h o m a s , G e o r g e S l a t e r a n d h i s w i f e , K i t t y, c o n t i n u e d t o be tapped by various chair people to use their friendships with farm owners and their managers. This paved the way for tour leaders to continue to nurture this most significant relationship – for we were only unique as long as these stables flourished and were willing to open their gates only for our benefit. Of course, that benefit was to continue funding outreach into our c o m m u n i t i e s , t o s u p p o r t s c h o l a r s h i p s a n d p e o p l e i n n e e d , n e a r a n d f a r.

It matters not how long you may have lived here or what “stable” experience you have, everyone is crucially important to the successful workings of this all volunteer project.

In 2001, the tour program thanked landowners, farm employees and volunteers with the following thoughts, still so relevant today: “ T h e H u n t C o u n t r y S t a b l e To u r h a s b e e n o n e o f t h e m o r e v i s i b l e w a y s i n w h i c h m e m b e r s o f Tr i n i t y C h u r c h h a v e a c t e d o u t t h e l o v e o f G o d . T h r o u g h a shared sense of purpose and plenty of hard work, the community comes together every Memorial Day to help carry out the church’s mission of a i d i n g t h e n e e d y.”

T h e Re v. Ro b e r t D a v e n p o r t ’ s s e r m o n t h a t S u n d a y s a i d “ b y y o u r g e n e r o s i t y, we have the power to change lives, to help people be transfigured, to share w i t h t h e r a d i a n c e o f C h r i s t . I f w e w o r k , p r a y a n d r e j o i c e t o g e t h e r, t h e l i v e s t h a t a r e c h a n g e d m i g h t w e l l b e o u r o w n .”

The 2024 tour was a popular comeback following an absence from the c a l e n d a r s i n c e 2 0 1 9 . T h e 2 0 2 6 H u n t C o u n t r y S t a b l e To u r b u i l d s o n t h e success of recent tours and has grown to be bigger and better than ever! It’s a joy to see so many farm properties taking part for the first time, and an equal joy to have properties included which were on the very first tour way b a c k i n 1 9 5 9 !
