Invitation & Instructions for Receiving Holy Communion Here at Trinity we welcome all to the Table set for us at the time of Communion.

As a sign and symbol of solidarity with all who are living with addiction and/or are intolerant of gluten we have decided to serve only non-alcoholic and glutenfree bread. We hope this communicates our collective desire to welcome all.

To receive the gluten-free bread, please put your hands together palms up. To receive the non- alcoholic wine, you may either drink directly from the cup or dip the bread in the cup before eating.

During the time of Communion, we also offer individual prayer at the back of the church and all are welcome to make use of this special time for prayer requests.

The season of Epiphany is about celebrating how God has shown God’s own self to us through the person, acts and teachings of Jesus.

The Epiphany recognizes and celebrates several things, all connected with the beginnings of Jesus Christ’s work of manifesting (revealing) God. The Feast of Epiphany refers first to the coming of the Wise Men to Jesus. Here we celebrate the revelation of Jesus Christ to the whole world. This is a celebration of the mystery of promise.

The theme of this season is Jesus Christ’s manifesting God to humans. In this way, Epiphany has a deeper meaning than Christmas, for instead of simply celebrating the birth of Christ, it testifies to the whole purpose of the incarnation: the manifestation of God in Jesus Christ beginning with his birth (and recognition by the Magi) and with his baptism and ministry.

During these weeks in Epiphany, we hear of Jesus’ mighty signs (miracles) and teachings as he lives out this manifestation of God. As we hear these stories, we commemorate those works and teachings of Jesus which led up to the final events in Jerusalem—his death and resurrection.

The second Lesson

1 Corinthians 13:1-13

If I speak in the tongues of mortals and of angels, but do not have love, I am a noisy gong or a clanging cymbal. And if I have prophetic powers, and understand all mysteries and all knowledge, and if I have all faith, so as to remove mountains, but do not have love, I am nothing. If I give away all my possessions, and if I hand over my body so that I may boast, but do not have love, I gain nothing.

Love is patient; love is kind; love is not envious or boastful or arrogant or rude. It does not insist on its own way; it is not irritable or resentful; it does not rejoice in wrongdoing, but rejoices in the truth. It bears all things, believes all things, hopes all things, endures all things. Love never ends. But as for prophecies, they will come to an end; as for tongues, they will cease; as for knowledge, it will come to an end. For we know only in part, and we prophesy only in part; but when the complete comes, the partial will come to an end. When I was a child, I spoke like a child, I thought like a child, I reasoned like a child; when I became an adult, I put an end to childish ways. With that light, God made the world and all people in whom, and through whom, the Light burns on, strong and true.

The prophet speaks of the coming light of God which calls all the people of the Earth to come together in God’s realm of shalom.

Good morning and “welcome home” to Trinity!

Whether you are new to our community or have found yourself coming back again and again, we want you to know you are both welcome and wanted here among us.

For some, church is as comfortable and familiar as a good pair of jeans, or like coming back to your childhood home (if it is one filled with good memories). For others, church might be like visiting a foreign country where you experience unfamiliar language or customs. And then, sadly, for some church has become equated with feelings of hurt, rejection, or shame. We get all of that and believe that church can be different.

We hold in real tension the beauty of our tradition with Jesus’ mandate to welcome all, no exceptions.

And we get that if people are brave enough to walk through the doors of a big, Gothic-looking church in downtown Toledo, we’d better be serious about being progressive, inclusive and creative.

We love our Episcopal tradition, but we love people from all walks of life even more. It is our hope and prayer that together we will navigate our way through each gathering, worship service, outreach activity, class, meal and social time with humility, grace and laughter.

So thank you for being here today; for trusting the yearning that brought you through those ancient doors.

May we all find our way into the heart of God’s love as we make room for each and all of us at the Table of love we set together week after week.

Baking bread for our weekly communion is the sole focus of this guild. We have moved to serving only gluten-free bread, and we provide each baker with the bread mix and instructions. Please contact Becky Roth at roth.becky@gmail.com if you are interested!

Hospitality & Breakfast Guild Every Sunday morning at 9:00 teams of people prepare, serve, and clean up a free community breakfast in My Brother’s Place. Following 10:00 service, volunteers serve coffee and tea in the back of the sanctuary. Trinity will provide all materials if volunteers do not want to or are not able to. Isaac Slater is in the ninth grade at Toledo School for the Arts. He is very excited to perform in the choir at Trinity Episcopal Church. His interests include jazz, singing, and theater. Some of his favorite roles for the theater have been Danny in Grease, Tevye in Fiddler on the Roof, and Orsino in Twelfth Night. His most recent stage recognition was in TSA’s Catch Me if you Can. Isaac would like to thank Mrs. Dauel for recommending him to sing at Trinity.

Did You Know?

When to Call our Priest?

In 1844, Trinity paid one dollar to acquire the property at the corner of Adams and St. Clair Streets from the American Land Company. In 1845 the first building was completed, a simple white clapboard structure in the style of a New England church, and Trinity Episcopal Church has stood in the heart of downtown Toledo ever since. To meet the needs of the growing congregation, the current modified Gothic stone building was built in 1863-1866. It is one of the oldest structures in continuous use in downtown Toledo, and it was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1983.

Snow Removal Policy

On Sundays: If Lucas County is under a Level 2 or Level 3 snow emergency at 10:00pm on Saturday night, all of the following Sunday morning activities – breakfast, worship, formation or other meetings – will be cancelled. In order to assure that we have the proper people here, we need to decide that early. So even if the snow emergency is downgraded later, everything scheduled on a typical Sunday morning will remain cancelled.

If a Level 2 is declared after 7:00am on Sunday, be safe and exercise caution. If we’re under a Level 2, we’ll have a worship service for anyone who comes that morning, unless other arrangements are made. Priest Lisa and wardens reserve the right to cancel worship if the weather becomes dangerous. A Level 3 snow emergency means you should rest safely in God’s love at home.

News of our cancellations will be posted on Trinity’s website, Facebook page, a group email will be sent, and cancellation notices will be called into the local TV stations (WTOL and NBC). On Weekdays: If Lucas County is under a Level 2 or Level 3 snow emergency as of 8:00am, the church is closed and all activities, including AA meetings, are cancelled.

Good Tips to Stay Warm This Winter Bundle up and stay warm. Frostbite occurs when skin is exposed to extreme and/or prolonged cold!

- Bundle up and skip the thin clothing, like leggings.

- Avoid alcohol as it can actually decrease your core temperatures.

- Don’t forget your hats, mittens and scarves to reduce the amount of exposed skin to the cold!

- Eat extra healthy fats to rev up metabolism, which in turn heats the body or try eating warmer foods and drinks such as soups, spicy foods, coffee and teas.

- Thick socks and sturdy, insulated boots will help keep your toes toasty warm.

- Keep your furry friends in mind too; limit walks to no more than 10 minutes in the frigid temperatures!
